Hello math students is Mrs. Khaira again and our lovable friend Lemony the Lamb who is going to be helping us with our learning today.

And today we are looking at the concept of subtraction as take away.

Sounds bit of a math form but we're going to crack on with our learning and I'm sure you'll do just fine.

Are you ready, let's begin.

Now for this lesson you will need the following items. You will need a 10 frame which is available in today's lesson resources.

You will need some mathematical manipulatives that you can use to represent numbers.

So I've got some cubes, but perhaps you might have some counters, you can use those.

And you will also need some real world countable objects.

Where I've got some pencil crayons but you can use whatever you have to have.

So if you have not got these items ready please press the pause button now and go and collect them.

Resume the video once you are ready.

Well let's have a look at our big picture again for this unit.

It comes from Mary has a little lamb.

And I wonder if we can sing the nursery rhyme to remember how it goes.

On the count of three, Lemony's ready, one, two, three.

♪ Mary had a little lamb ♪ ♪ Little lamb ♪ ♪ Little lamb ♪ ♪ Mary had a little lamb ♪ ♪ His was fleece was white as snow ♪ ♪ And everywhere that Mary went ♪ ♪ Mary went ♪ ♪ Mary went ♪ ♪ Everywhere that Mary went ♪ ♪ That Lamb was sure to go ♪ ♪ He followed her to school one day ♪ ♪ School one day ♪ ♪ School one day ♪ ♪ He followed her to school one day ♪ ♪ Which was against the rules ♪ ♪ It made the children laugh and play ♪ ♪ Laugh and play ♪ ♪ Laugh and play ♪ ♪ It made the children laugh and play ♪ ♪ To see a lamb at school ♪ That was fantastic singing, as always.

I could hear you all the way from here as could Lemony great work everyone.

Well today we'll be looking at take away and when we say take away it means that we're going to be removing some items from a set.

So let's have a look, a good look at the big picture once more.

Now I wonder if you've spotted the four yellow flowers at the bottom of the picture.

So first I spotted four flowers and I picked them.

So first I had four flowers, then Lemony cheekily ate three of them, he ate three of them.

Now I wonder how many flowers I have left.

I wonder if I can use my cubes to help me find the answer.

So lets have a look.

First I have four flowers and here are my four cubes to represent them.

One, two, three and four.

First I had four flowers and then Lemony came and ate three of them.

So I'm going to take three of them away.

Can you help me count one, two, three.

Then Lemony ate three of the flowers.

Now how many flowers do I have left? Could you shout the answer out at the screen? Yes that's correct now I have one flower left.

Four flowers take away three flowers left me with one flower, now I have one flower left.

Well done everyone.

Great work everyone.

Now we can also use our ten frame to help us with our first then and now story.

So let's have a look at the question again.

First I spotted four yellow flowers.

Then Lemony came and ate three of them.

Now, how many flowers do I have left? If first I have four flowers, I'm going to represent those four flowers with four cubes on my template.

Then Lemony came and ate three of them.

So lets take three of those cubes away.

One, two and three.

Then Lemony ate three flowers.

Now how many flowers do I have left? Well I can see that I've got one cube left.

Four flowers subtract or take away three flowers leaves me now with one flower.

Let's have a look at one more example together.

Now we looked at the birds in the sky earlier.

I can see looking very carefully that there are five birds in the sky.

One, two, three, four, five, first there were five birds.

Then three of those birds flew away.

Now how many birds are left in the sky? Well let's use our cubes and ten frame to help us.

First I spotted five birds and there they are.

One, two, three, four, five.

My five cubes that were on the ten frame.

Then three of those birds flew away.

We're going to take three of those cubes away.

Can you help me count three? One, two, three great work everyone.

Now how many birds are left? Well I can see that there are two cubes left so there must be two birds left in the sky.

Five birds take away three birds leaves us with two birds.

Well done everyone, great work.

Fantastic listening everyone.

Now it's your turn to have a go.

Let's have a look at today's talk task.

You're going to need a talk partner to have a go at the activity with your ten frame and some cubes or manipulatives.

So let's have a look at how many sheep we have in our field.

Let's count them out together using our careful counting fingers.

One, two, three.

Four, five, six.

Seven, eight, nine.

First there are nine sheep in the field.

I'm going to use nine cubes on my ten frame to represent those nine sheep.

One, two, three, four, five.

Six, seven, eight, nine.

First there were nine sheep in the field.

Then we're going to choose a number of sheep that are going to run away.

Then four sheep decide to run away.

Oh dear, they are naughty sheep aren't they Lemony? I wonder how many sheep are we going to have left now in the field.

So first there were nine sheep, then four sheep run away.

So lets take away four of those cubes.

Let's do it together one, two, three and four.

Then four sheep run away.

Now how many sheep do we have left? Let's see how many cubes we have left on our ten frame.

One, two, three, four, five.

There are five cubes left on the ten frame.

That must mean that there are five sheep left in the field.

Is that correct Lemony? Lemony is nodding it must be correct.

Nine sheep take away four sheep has left us with five sheep, you're correct well done.

Now it's your turn so what I'd like you to do is press the pause button and have a go at the activity.

And once you are done, I'd like you to resume the video so we can carry on with our learning.

Great work everyone.

Now we can also use some real life examples to help us with our take away first then with our stories.

So lets have a look at my example.

I love to colour so I have got some colouring pencils.

First let's find out how many colouring pencils I have.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

First I had eight colouring pencils.

Then I decided to share them with my friend Lemony.

I gave him four of my pencils, aren't I generous Lemony? Now I would like to know how many pencils I have left.

So let's use our cubes and our ten frame to help us.

First I had eight pencils and there my eight cubes to show my eight pencils.

Then I was feeling generous and I shared them with Lemony.

Then I gave Lemony four of my pencils.

So let's take away four of my cubes to find out how many that we have now.

One, two, three and then four.

Then I shared four of my pencils with Lemony.

Now how many pencils do I have left? Well let's have a look and see.

I have one, two, three, four cubes left on the ten frame.

And therefor I must have four pencils left now.

So that means that eight take away four is equal to four.

Great work, that's fantastic to see.

So now it's your turn to have a go.

What I'd like to do is pause the video.

I'd like you to see what countable objects you have in the environment around you.

You might have some pencils or pens or markers that you could count.

You need your ten frame and some cubes to help you find out the answers to your very own first and then answers.

Once your done please resume the video so we can finish up our fantastic lesson.

Great work everybody, let's have a look at the last little part of our lesson.

We're going to look at a problem that involves five cheeky sheep, let's see what's going on.

So Lemony and I spotted five sheep in the field.

Then some of them escaped and now there are two sheep left.

We want to find out how many sheep might have escaped.

Hmm what could we do to help us I wonder.

Huh you're a genius Lemony of course let's use our cubes and our ten frame.

So first there were five sheep in the field.

So let's put five cubes on to our ten frame.

One, two, three, four, five.

Then some sheep escaped, now we know that there are two sheep left in the field.

So hmm we know that we want to keep two of our cubes on the ten frame because two sheep are defiantly going to be left.

Let's put a ring around them so we don't disappear them.

There we go very nice, now let's find out how many sheep might have escaped.

Hmm let's take away the remaining cubes shall we.

One, two, three.

I took away three of my cubes.

That must mean that three of the escaped.

Great work Lemony you have been such a fantastic partner.

Well done everyone great learning today.

Next lesson we will be continuing with understanding the concept of subtraction as take away.

Lemony and I look forward to seeing you there! Bye from me and bye from Lemony.
