Hello, I'm Mrs. Enock and I'm so happy to be your design and technology teacher today for mechanisms, levers, and linkages.

Now we are carrying on with the next part of our making process, continuing from last lesson.

And today's lesson is to use a range of techniques to continue to make and begin to complete our final design.

So let's go and see exactly what we're learning about in today's lesson.

In today's lesson you're going to need pencil, rubber, and ruler, and the colouring equipment that you have available, cardboard, this can be recycled, scissors, and split pins, and also something that you can push a pencil into without damaging your table.

For example, a rubber, some blue tack, or a small piece of plasticine.

Please remember, scissors must be used under the supervision of a parent or carer.

Let's see what we're learning about in today's lesson.

First, we're going to recap the design brief and final design.

Then we will summarise our current progress and we'll continue to make the final product.

We'll then summarise our new progress and think about the next steps of our making.

Here are the keywords for today's lesson.

Mechanism.

Can you say that for me? Mechanism, the mechanism is a device used to create movement in a product.

Linkages.

Your turn.

Linkages, these are the card strips we use to join one or more of the levers, and this produces the required type of movement.

We've been using linkages and levers a lot in this unit of work, haven't we? Design brief.

Design brief is a description of a product that will be designed.

It states how the product will function to meet the needs of the user.

For this project, we have been designing a persuasive moving picture.

Finally, adaptation.

Can you say that for me? Adaptation links to adapting.

Adaptation is the making of automation and changes in our production process and it's really important that it ensures the mechanisms work.

You'll see that I'll be doing lot of adaptation when I'm making my final design.

It's time to recap on design brief and final design.

Our design brief is to design a persuasive picture with moving parts.

We want the back of the picture to be moving.

To make it move, we must include a lever and a linkage to make the important movement.

The movement must be smooth and controlled and we'll achieve this by adding a bridge.

On the front of the picture, it must be appealing.

It must look attractive to the person viewing it.

It must also be persuasive.

It must persuade the viewer to do or think something.

Here is an example of my final design.

Now remember, your final design should look different to mine, but we will have similarities in that we will have designed the front of our design and we would have designed the moving mechanisms at the back.

And we would have both added annotation to help give us more information on how we will make our final design.

It's now time to do a summary of our current progress so far.

We've begun to do the outline, but we haven't added the extra detail yet.

On the back of our design, we've worked hard to make sure the mechanisms move in a smooth and controlled way.

Here's a summary of our progress and my next steps.

So I've created, I've begun to create the background of the persuasive picture and I made and changed the mechanisms to ensure a good quality movement, adding a bridge where needed.

My next steps are going to begin to hide the mechanisms using card, and also begin to design the moving pieces.

Now it's time for you to pause your work and have a check on your progress and what your next steps are.

Let's ask ourselves a very important question.

Did you identify an area for development? Point to yes or no.

Well done if you pointed to yes.

Being part of a great designer is not being afraid to change and develop your ideas.

It's now time for us to continue to make the final product.

Here's our safety warning.

You'll be asked to use sharp scissors for the next activity.

If you haven't done already, please go and ask an adult to be present before you start this activity.

Please don't use sharp scissors unsupervised.

So press pause, gather all the materials you need, and then press resume and we'll carry on learning together.

Ready? Off you go.

Here's where we are so far.

We've got our moving mechanisms. Now it's time for us to move the levers to the front.

And by doing this, I've made a pencil mark on the lever and when I'm moving the mechanism, you'll see that's an arc shows me where the lever is going to move, and this will really help me know how to cut it out.

I'm drawing out where the movement of the lever will be.

Ready to cut out.

There we go.

You can see the movement.

Now I've cut out both areas where it will be moving.

And now I can safely put the lever back in, put the fixed pivot back in.

There we go, and add the extra fixed pivot.

And once both fixed pivots have been added, I can then thread the long lever through, and this means the back of the mechanism is hidden and we can move the lever to the front of the picture.

As you can see, we've moved the mechanism from the back to the front.

Pretty neat, huh?.

I've decided to make a change.

I think I'd like a wider movement, so I'm actually making the movement right at the end of my lever.

Can you see the difference in the range of movement? As you can see, I've cut out the movement and I've decided to make a fresh, longer lever.

this way I can have the back of the mechanism and we've brought the lever forward so it will be moving on the front of the picture.

I'm now using my finger to see where the fixed pivot should be.

Once I'm happy, I've added the fixed pivot and as you can see, there's a lovely, long movement of where the turtle will be.

Always checking those mechanisms, making sure they're moving.

They look pretty good.

I've made the levers longer so we can add moving pictures onto them.

I've added some colour and look how the bold colours make those moving characters come to life.

We're now able to safely attach the moving picture to the lever.

You'll notice I'm putting the glue directly onto the lever.

And that is because we don't want the glue to be anywhere else on the back of the picture because this might compromise, it might stop the mechanism for moving and it's really important.

What I like about adding these pictures, did you notice the split pins have been hidden as well? That's part of the design.

So now we've got moving pictures that look aesthetically pleasing.

Once they're attached, you can then cut off the extra parts of the lever you don't need.

Once the actual levers have been cut off, you can see the moving picture, the mechanisms at the back, and the moving pictures at the front.

Now it's time to add our turtle.

Again, I'm making sure that the glue is only on the lever.

Then when I add the turtle on top of the lever, it actually covers the cut that we've made in the picture.

That's a great movement from the turtle.

I'm really pleased I made that adaptation.

We mentioned previously that you had two choices.

You could either have watched me make the final design up to this point and then you have a go at making yours or you could have been pausing and working alongside me.

If you need extra time for you to continue your product up to the point of adding the moving pieces, now is the time to do so.

Once you're done, press resume and then we'll summarise the progress we've both made and identify what our next steps of the design process will be.

Ready? Of you go.

Have you got up to the point of attaching your characters to the mechanisms? Well done if you have.

Let's summarise the progress.

My progress, I hit the mechanisms and continued to make adaptations where needed.

I designed the moving pieces and again, made adaptations, making sure that the mechanism is always working.

Next time in my product design, I need to develop and finalise the front picture design.

And then I need to check all the mechanisms and make adaptations where needed.

Now's a good time for you to pause this video and have a quick check about the progress you've made so far and identify what you will be doing next in the product design process.

Ready? Off you go.

Did you identify your next steps? Well done if you did.

My goodness, this was a fantastic lesson that I really enjoyed.

Let's see what we did.

We recapped on the design brief and the final design.

We summarised our current progress and continued to make our final product.

We then summarised our new progress and identified the next steps.

I had a fantastic lesson with you and I hope you enjoyed today's lesson, too.

All there's left to say is I'm incredibly proud of you.

Keep working hard and I'll see you soon.

Bye for now.
