Hi everyone! How are you today? I'm Ms. Mitchell.

Today in maths we're going to be using the language of rotation.

So, get yourself ready.

In today's lesson, we're going to be looking at the language of rotation.

You will then complete a talk task, an independent task, and then a quiz.

For today's lesson, you will need a pencil and some paper.

Pause this video now to get this if you have not got it already.

So here we have two words.

One says anti-clockwise, and one says clockwise.

So, clockwise is a direction.

The direction of clockwise is going round a clock the correct way.

So, you go around and this direction is clockwise.

Now the second word here is anti-clockwise.

Anti means opposed or against.

If you're going against clockwise, it means you're going the opposite way.

So, if this is clockwise, what is the opposite way? What would anti-clockwise be? That's right.

You'll be going backwards.

So this direction is anti-clockwise.

To the left, clockwise.

To the right, anti-clockwise.

We now have a quarter turn.

A quarter is this little bit here.

A quarter makes me think of a right angle because it's 90 degrees.

Now, a quarter is half of a half.

A quarter is half of a half.

If you think this is a half, a quarter is half of that.

This is a quarter turn.

You then have a half turn.

A half is half of a whole.

So if this is the whole, a half turn is half of that.

You can see, on the clock, halfway on the clock would be six o'clock.

Finally, you have three quarters.

If this is a whole, this part here would be the quarter and this is where that 90 degrees would be.

Everything else from here, all the way to here, or from here, all the way to here, is three quarters.

So, it's a quarter times three.

Three quarters.

If I was looking at a clock and I was at 12 o'clock, three quarters would be nine o'clock.

For your first talk task, I'd like you to move a full turn clockwise.

Could you have a go at that for me now.

A full turn clockwise.

Well done.

It should look like this.

One full turn in a clockwise direction.

Okay, number two.

Could you move a half turn clockwise? Could you move a half turn clockwise? Well done.

It should look like this.

So I'm moving a quarter, and I've moved a half.

You should be facing the opposite direction to what you started in.

That would be a half turn.

If I did a half turn in an anti-clockwise direction, would I end up in the same place? Well done, you would.

A half turn clockwise is the same as a half turn anti-clockwise.

You would end up in the same direction.

Okay.

Your third and final task.

Could you move a three quarter turn anti-clockwise.

Could you please move a three quarter turn anti-clockwise.

Off you go.

Well done.

So, anti-clockwise is the opposite direction to clockwise.

If I went this way for clockwise, I'm going anti-clockwise a quarter, a half, and three quarters.

You may have noticed that.

What would the house look like if it made a 3/4 turn clockwise? What do you think the house would look like if it made a three quarter turn clockwise.

Shall we have a go? One quarter, two quarters, three quarters.

So this is the direction the house would face if it made a three quarter turn clockwise.

What would the house look like if it made a half turn clockwise? Could you pause the video now and do a drawing of where you think the house would be, what direction it would be facing if it made a half turn clockwise.

Well done.

Remember, a half turn clockwise would face the same way as a half turn anti-clockwise.

The question is slightly different.

By what fraction of a turn has the house been rotated or has the house turned? If this is how I started and I did a turn and ended up like this, by what fraction has the house been rotated? Could you write that fraction down for me.

That's right.

One quarter clockwise.

Could there have been another way I could have written that? It could be one quarter clockwise, however it could also be three quarters anti-clockwise.

Either of those answers are correct.

One quarter clockwise, or three quarters anti-clockwise.

By what fraction of a turn has the house been rotated? By what fraction of a turn has the house been rotated? Could you please write that fraction down for me.

Let's see if you are correct.

That's right, it's a half.

It can be a half clockwise or it could be a half anti-clockwise.

If the house has returned to it's starting position, what might have happened? So, let's just say the house started like this and then it did a turn and then it finished like this, what might have happened? That's right.

It would have done a full turn.

The full turn could have been clockwise or anti-clockwise.

It would still be in the same starting position.

Here is an example of the full turn.

For your independent task, show me what this tree would look like if it was rotated these different ways.

This is always how the tree starts.

Could you then draw a picture, please, of what the tree would look like if it was rotated these different ways.
