Hello everyone and welcome to our geography lesson today.

I Miss Harrison, and this is actually our final lesson in this geography unit about the geography of Brazil.

I've had a great time teaching you about all of the amazing places in Brazil and all of the different landscapes and human features and towns and cities that we have looked at.

So today to wrap up our unit, we're going to be thinking about the reason that Brazil is so difficult to describe.

And that's mainly because it's such a diverse country there are so many different cities and towns and human settlements, and there were so many different landscapes, like the beautiful mountain landscape you can see behind me around one of the biggest cities, Rio de Janeiro.

So let's get stuck into our lessons.

So our learning question for today is why is Brazil so difficult to describe? And during our lesson today, we're going to recap the seven continents of the world.

We're going to be able to locate Brazil in South America.

I know you guys are amazing at both of those things already.

And then we're going to think about why the geography of Brazil is so diverse and looking at the different physical features in different parts of the country, as well as different human features within the different parts of the country.

So before we get going, you will need for this lesson, a piece of paper or a notebook, a pen or pencil to write with.

And of course your amazing geography brain, which is so full of knowledge already, I can't wait to see it today.

So let's begin with our first challenge, which is going to be naming and locating the seven continents of the world.

So here is our world map.

I'm going to show it nice and big for you.

And I'm going to ask you to point with your finger, to the continent that I am saying.

So, first of all, I would like you to put your finger on the continent of South America.

See if you can find South America, that's the one that we've been focusing on in this unit.

Did you manage to find it? It was the purple one on the left hand side of your screen.

Well done if you've got that one right.

Next, I would like you nice and easy to point your finger on North America.

So we know South America, where is North America? Put your finger on it.

Awesome work, North America is the yellow continent you can see above South America.

Next step, I would like you to find the continent of Asia.

Can you find the continent of Asia, put your finger on it.

Well done, if you managed to spot, it was the dark red continent on the right hand side.

Next step I would like you to find the continent of Africa, put your finger on the continent of Africa.

Well done, if you managed to spot it, it was the big orange continent in the middle.

And then let's have a look for the continent of Antarctica, putting your finger on the continent of Antarctica.

You should have spotted that it's the one at the very South of the globe.

So right at the bottom of your map, and then let's have a look for the continent of Australia.

Put your finger on it now.

Well done if you managed to find it, it was over here, the pink one on the right hand side, and then finally the continent where we live here in the UK.

It's the continent of Europe.

Put your finger on Europe.

Well done, awesome work, Europe is the green one right at the top there.

Fantastic work team, well done if you've got all of those continents right if you managed to locate them on the map.

So today we are going to be zooming back in to South America and the country of Brazil.

Now, before we zoom in on Brazil, how many different South American countries can you remember? So there were twelve in total, remember there's one that's not its own country.

It's a territory of France.

See how many of those you can shout out in one minute.

So pause the video now give yourself just one minute.

How many of those South American countries can you shout out? Off you go.

I wonder, did you manage to get them all lets have a look here is our map of South America, so we had Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, which is our one that we're focusing on.

We have French Guiana, but remember it's not a country by itself.

It's a territory of France.

Suriname and Guyana.

I wonder if you've managed to learn all twelve of those.

I'll be very impressed if you have so well done team.

And we are going to be focusing back in on Brazil, which is here on the East side of the continent of South America.

So next question for you.

Why is the geography of Brazil so diverse? Why are there so many different types of geography around the different country? Now we've learned quite a lot about Brazil in this unit.

Why is it such a diverse country? Keep that in your mind as we go through our next, few slides.

So first of all, I have a question for you and I want you to answer it with true or false.

So have a look at this one, all of Brazil is covered in rainforest.

Is it true or is it false? All of Brazil is covered in rain forest.

I want you to shout out your answer at the screen one, two, three well done, if you said it is false, not all of Brazil is covered in rainforest, even though there is a large rain forest within Brazil, the Amazon, it doesn't cover the whole country.

And we can see that the geography at Brazil is really diverse because it's a very vast country.

That means it's a really big country, with lots of different climates zones and lots of different landscapes.

Now, if you look at the map on your screen, I'm going to show it a little bit bigger for you.

Look at the map on the screen.

This map shows the different higher lands.

So, those higher above sea level and lower lands, so you can see for example, in the Northwest of Brazil and the land is lower downs, there are less kind of mountains and peaks.

And that's where the Amazon rainforest is.

Whereas you can see higher pieces of land like the mountains towards the South and the East of Brazil.

And those, you can see those are a slightly different colour on the map.

So one reason why the geography is so diverse within Brazil is because it's such a big country.

So the land changes a lot and the landscape changes throughout the country.

Now I've got another true or false for you.

The weather is always hot and dry in Brazil.

So you can see that beautiful beach picture looks really, really lovely, but is it always hot and dry in all parts of Brazil? Is it true or is it false? Get ready to shout out your answer.

One, two, three.

Well done if you said false, it is not always hot and dry in Brazil because within Brazil there are loads of different climate zones.

And we've looked at this map in a previous lesson.

Again, I'm going to make it a bit bigger for you so you can see, and on this map, you can see the different colours show the different climate in different parts of Brazil.

So for example, you can see the darker blue areas have warm temperatures.

So they're very hot and they have lots of rain all year round and that's the place where the Amazon is.

So it's always hot and it's always wet around there.

Then you can see those red and orange areas to the East of Brazil are often warm and very dry all year.

So they're are more kind of desert landscapes in those places.

And the green areas have different summer and winter seasons and the climate is more mild, so it's warmer in the summer and it's colder in the winter.

So we can see that the climate changes even within the country of Brazil because it's such a huge country, depending on where you are, the climate and the weather will be very different.

Now let's have a think about those physical geographical features that we can recognise in Brazil.

So we know that the climate is very different around the country.

We know that the kind of landscape is very different and let's have a think about those different physical features that we can recognise in different parts of Brazil.

So we know that the physical geography varies a lot.

It's not just a country covered in rain forest.

It's not just a country covered in mountains.

There are loads of different features, so we have the Amazon rain forest, which is in the North West of Brazil.

We've got mountain ranges further South and towards the East, we have rivers and waterfalls.

We have dry desert areas, particularly in the East.

And we have lots of different coastlines throughout the country of Brazil.

Let's have a look at some of those that we have looked at before.

So here's an image of the Amazon rain forest, and we've looked pretty in depth at the Amazon rain forest in our previous lessons, so that's in the Northwest.

Here is the tallest peak in Brazil.

So the tallest mountain peak, which is Pico da Neblina, and that's the tallest mountain in Brazil and it's on the border with Venezuela.

Then we have the Igwasu falls, the waterfalls in the South of the country, on the border with Argentina and they are huge waterfalls.

The biggest, range of waterfalls in the world.

Then we have the drier desert areas like the Caatinga that we've looked at in previous lessons and that's in the Northeast of Brazil.

And then we have the coastal plains within Brazil as well.

And the coastline goes all the way along the East of the country.

So because it's such a huge country, the weather changes, the landscape changes and the physical features change throughout the country.

I want you to put all that information into this writing task.

So I'd like you to fill in the gaps in this paragraph, choosing the correct word.

So you're going to copy down the whole paragraph and you're going to choose the word that fits in the gap.

So you've got Brazil has different climate zones because it is such a, mmh, country.

This means that there are different, mmh, features in different parts.

For example, that is the, mmh, in the Northwest of Brazil where the climate is hot and wet.

So have a look at those words, choose the right word that goes in the gap and fill it in in your paragraph.

Pause the video now, have a go.

Fantastic work, everybody.

So we should have written Brazil has different climate zones because it is such a large country.

Give us a tick if you've written the word large in that gap, this means that there are different physical features in different parts, give yourself a tick if you chose the word physicals go in that gap.

And for example, there is the rain forest in the Northwest of Brazil where the climate is hot and wet.

Give yourself a tick if you have got that one correct.

Awesome work team, well done.

So now we've thought about the physical features.

Let's have a think about the human features and we can see within Brazil.

So here's another true or false statement for you.

All people in Brazil live in large busy cities.

Is that true or is it false? All people in Brazil live in large busy cities, have a think and get ready to shout out your answer.

One, two, three, well done if you said false, it's not true that all people in Brazil live in large busy cities because there are loads of different types of human settlements within Brazil.

So let's have a think about those different human features we can identify within Brazil.

So we know that around two hundred and twelve million people live in Brazil and people in Brazil live in lots of different types of settlements, ranging from huge urban cities to small rural towns or villages.

And even those people that live within big cities, some of them have different experiences than others living in the same city to them.

As we looked at the case study of Rio de Janeiro in previous lessons.

So let's have a look at some of that diversity within human features and human settlements in Brazil.

So we have already studied Brasilia, which is the capital city of Brazil.

We've also looked at Sao Paolo, which is the largest city in the whole country.

We did a case study on Rio de Janeiro, which is another huge city within Brazil.

And within that city, we looked at the different experiences of people that live there.

So we learned that some people might live in a kind of skyscrapers and very fancy flats or apartments.

And some people live in favelas, which are smaller developments on the outskirts of the city in the Hills.

So again, even though they live within the same city, their experiences might differ quite a lot.

And then we've looked at smaller, rural settlements, like the villages within the Amazon rain forest.

So we studied some facts about the Awá tribe living within the Amazon rain forest and the types of settlements they live in as well.

We have learned so much about Brazil and the huge diversity within the country.

Your final task today is I would like you to think about why Brazil is so difficult to describe.

And I want you to make a list of all the ways that Brazil is diverse.

You might think about the climate, what's different about the climate in different parts of Brazil.

You might want to think about the wildlife, so the different animals that live within Brazil, and you might want to use the information from our previous lesson to do that.

You might think about the human settlements, so the different villages and towns and cities within Brazil, and you might want to look at the physical geographical features as well, so there's different mountains and rain forests, and lakes and deserts and all of those different features.

Wow, there is so much information that we have learnt.

I want you to write down everything that you've learnt in a list of all the ways that Brazil is diverse.

Wow, your list is going to be so long, fantastic.

So pause the video now, you can rewind the video at any time to go back to any previous information, but have a go at writing down all of those facts about why Brazil is so diverse.

Have a go.

Okay, awesome work everybody.

And that's the end of our lesson today, and that's the end of our unit on the geography of Brazil.

I have loved exploring the geography of Brazil with you guys, and I hope you have loved it and found it very interesting as well.

Well done for all your hard work today and in our previous lessons.

Now, if you're super proud of some of the work you've done in our geography lessons about Brazil, and you want to share that you could ask a parent or carer to take a photo of your work and upload it to social media with the hashtag learn with Oak and tagging @OakNational.

That way some of your Oak Academy teachers might be able to see the wonderful work that you have been doing at home.

You are all fantastic geographers and I'm super proud of all you, so well done for your hard work throughout this unit.

And I will see you again soon, bye.
