Hello.
My name is Ms. Nicholson.
I'm so glad that you've chosen to join me today for a fun and exciting art and design lesson.
In this lesson, we're going to be creating an identity mood board all about you.
I'm really looking forward to learning together today, and I hope that you are too.
Let's get started.
In this lesson, we're going to be creating an identity mood board.
Let's take a look at our key words for this lesson.
Repeat after me.
Mood board.
Identity.
Overlapping.
Collage.
Great job.
Now let's look at what these key words mean.
Mood board.
A mood board is a collection of pictures, colours, drawings, and words that show ideas for art.
Identity.
Identity is who you are and how you are different from others.
Overlapping.
Overlapping is when images are layered on top of each other.
Collage.
Collage is arranging different materials and sticking them together on a surface.
Now that we found out what our keywords mean, let's move on with the lesson.
This lesson has three cycles.
In the first part of the lesson, we're going to be looking at the question, what is identity? After that, we're going to find out what is a mood board.
And then finally, we're going to be creating a mood board to represent your identity.
What is identity? Some people may have a similar story to you, and others may have very different stories.
Looking at the people at the bottom of the screen, they all may have some similarities between each other but also lots of differences.
Your identity is like a story about who you are.
And this is Sofia.
Sofia's going to tell us a little bit about her story.
She said, I grew up in South Africa.
I am sometimes shy around new people.
My hobbies are football and birdwatching.
I now live in New Castle, England.
I believe in being kind.
I live with my mom and sister.
I wear a hearing aid to help me hear more clearly.
Identity is what makes you you.
Let's find out some of the things that come together to build somebody's identity.
It could be their name, their favourite things, their beliefs, their culture, their feelings, and also their language.
These are some of the things that come together to build up your identity and make you you.
It's all the things that make you special and unique from everyone else.
How exciting.
Let's check for understanding.
Identity is all the things that make you special and from everyone else.
Is it A, unique, B, important, or C, creative? Pause the video here, have a think, and rejoin when you're ready.
How did you get on? Let's take a look at the answer.
The answer was A, unique.
Let's put that into the sentence.
Identity is all the things that make you special and unique from everyone else.
Great job.
Now it's time for task A.
Draw or write down five or more things that make up your identity.
Just like we explored earlier, you may want to include: your name, your favourite things, your family, the things you do with your family, the things that you enjoy doing, where you come from, your beliefs, and also how you feel inside your feelings.
You can draw or write these things down on a piece of paper or in a sketchbook.
Pause the video here and return once you are done.
Have fun exploring your identity.
How did you get on? Was that fun, exploring your identity? Did you write down five or more things that make you who you are? You may have drawn or written something like this.
This is Izzy.
Izzy's favourite things are art and nature, so she decided to draw a leaf and a paintbrush to represent this.
Where you come from.
Izzy comes from Liverpool, England.
Beliefs.
Izzy believes that people should be kind.
Feelings.
Izzy feels happy and excited.
Family.
Izzy's family are her grandmother and brother, so here, she has drawn a picture to represent them.
Now that we've looked at what is identity, it's time to move on to the second part of our lesson, what is a mood board? What is a mood board? A mood board is a collection of images, colours, words, and sometimes objects.
Here, we have some images and some colours that Izzy is looking at in the frame.
Artists use mood boards to plan and share their ideas or a theme.
Mood boards are used whenever people want to plan and share creative ideas.
Here, we have an example of a mood board that a fashion designer has created to share their ideas.
Fashion designers use mood boards to create clothing collections.
Here is another example.
Interior designers design what the room looks like inside.
And interior designers use mood boards to show ideas for decorating rooms. You can see here lots of different ideas, different colours that they may want to use, different fabrics and textures, and this mood board helps them bring all of their ideas together.
We've got the colour theme, the different patterns, and also the fabrics that they may want to use as well.
Let's take a look at another example.
In film or theatre, designers use mood boards to plan costumes, characters, sets, and the ideas of a story.
I wonder what the ideas might be for this story.
We've got the characters and also the costumes.
It looks very interesting.
Now it's time to check for your understanding.
Mood boards are used when people want to show creative, is it A, tools, B, ideas, or C, materials? Have a think, pause the video, and return once you're done.
How did you get on? Let's check the answer.
The answer was ideas.
Mood boards are used whenever people want to plan and share ideas.
Great job.
Let's move on.
What do you think the idea or theme might be for this mood board? Take a look closely at the colours.
Look at the pictures.
How do they all together? What might be the theme? Got a leaf, we've got some conkers, and also some pumpkins.
How do they all link together? The artist has chosen autumn as the theme for this mood board.
Did you think that too? They've used autumnal colours.
The images represent autumn.
Pumpkins grow in autumn, conkers grow on the trees, and also the leaves start to change colour as we move into the autumn month.
Great job.
Let's check for your understanding.
True or false.
A mood board is a collection of images, colours, words, and sometimes objects.
Is that statement true or is it false? Pause the video here, have a think, and rejoin once you are done.
Welcome back.
How did you get on? Let's find out the answer.
It was true, mood boards are a collection of images, colours, words, and sometimes objects.
Well done.
Let's move on.
Now it's time for task B.
Look at each mood board below and discuss what you think the theme is.
We've got three different mood boards, and each one represent a different theme using colours and images.
Pause the video here, have a think what each one represents, and then return once you're done.
Have fun.
How did you get on? Let's look at what the theme is for each individual mood board.
Jacob said, I think the theme could be parties or birthdays.
I see balloons and cake.
Yes, that's right.
This mood board represent birthdays or parties, and you can see that in the images and colours.
Well done if you thought it was birthdays or parties too.
Now we have the second mood board.
And we have Jun here.
Jun said, I think the theme could be nature or animals.
The colour scheme looks natural.
We can see some animals, some leaves, looks like a log, and then we've got the very natural colour scheme there as well.
Yes, I think that this mood board represents nature or animals.
Well done.
And finally, we have the third mood board.
Izzy says, I think the theme could be cities or buildings.
I see a skyline and different landmarks.
Look carefully.
Yes, I can see lots of buildings and a skyline.
This mood board must represent cities or buildings.
Well done.
Let's move on.
Now it's time for the final part of our lesson where we're going to be creating a mood board to represent your identity.
Let's continue.
Artists will collect images that represent their ideas from newspapers and magazines, and they also may choose to take their own photographs before creating a mood board as well.
Izzy is creating a mood board.
She's collected images from magazines to create a mood board about her identity.
You can see some words, some pictures, and some patterns that she's collected to represent her identity.
Now we're going to think about what Izzy's images tell us about her identity.
Let's take a closer look.
Looking at the word Liverpool there could tell us where she's from.
The big smiley face might tell us that she feels happy.
And also this picture of a plant might tell us that she likes nature.
These are just some of the things that come together to build up Izzy's identity.
Now it's time to check for understanding.
What does not make up your identity? Is it A, family, B, interests, or C, the weather? Pause the video here, have a think, and rejoin once you're done.
Welcome back.
Let's look at the answer.
The answer was C, weather does not make up your identity.
Identity includes things that make you special and unique like your name, your family, or where you come from.
The weather is not part of somebody's identity.
Well done.
Now we're going to look at the different steps we can take to create our identity mood boards.
We can use scissors to carefully cut out different images when making a mood board, and here's an example.
When holding our scissors, we have our thumb on the top, our two fingers in the bottom hole, we took the other fingers away, we hold the paper with the other hand, and we slowly and carefully open and close the scissors.
This will ensure that we are safe and also that we have neat edges on our images.
Now it's time to check for your understanding.
True or false? Artists sometimes collect images that represent their ideas from newspapers and magazines.
Is that true or is that false? Have a think, pause the video here, and rejoin once you've got your answer.
Let's check the answer.
The answer was true.
Artists do sometimes collect images that represent their ideas from newspapers and magazines.
Well done.
A mood board is like a collage of different images.
Artists arrange the images on their page before sticking them down.
And it's really important not to stick your images down until you are ready.
What are the differences in how each mood board is arranged? We have mood board number one and mood board number two.
What's the difference? When images are layered on top of each other, we call it overlapping.
The first mood board shows overlapping, and the second mood board does not show overlapping.
You can see lots of white space in between the images.
Artists sometimes use overlapping to make the mood board look more interesting.
This also makes connections between the different pictures.
Here you can see how overlapping has been used to make the mood board more interesting.
Artists also often select a colour theme to include on their mood board.
You can see here that yellow, pink, and green have been chosen as the colour theme.
I do: cut out one image from a magazine or newspaper that represents your identity.
Explain to a partner why you have chosen your image.
Here is the image that I have chosen.
Remembered to cut carefully and slowly around the edges.
Now it's your turn.
Cut out one image from a magazine or a newspaper that represents your identity.
Explain to a partner why you have chosen this image.
Pause the video here and return once you've done that.
How did you get on? You may have chosen your image to represent your favourite things, your family, the things you do with your family, or where you come from, because these are the things that build up our identity.
Now it's time for task C and putting everything together that we've learned so far.
You are going to create a mood board to represent your identity.
You are going to cut out a range of images that represent your identity from magazines or newspapers.
You're going to arrange the images and explore different layouts until you are happy.
You are going to overlap the images to make your mood board look more interesting as well.
Don't forget to include a colour theme.
Remember not to stick the images down until you are ready.
Leave that until the very end.
Pause the video here, go and have fun creating your identity mood board, and come back once you're done.
How did you get on? Did you create an identity mood board? Did you overlap the images and think carefully about your colour scheme? You may have created something like this.
Well done.
I hope you enjoyed that.
Let's summarise our learning for today.
Identity is what makes you unique.
A mood board is a collection of images, colours, words, and sometimes objects as well.
Artists sometimes use overlapping to make their mood board more interesting, which you had a go at today.
I really hope you enjoyed that.
I hope you managed to explore your identity through creating a mood board.
I've really enjoyed our learning today, and I hope that you have too.
I look forward to seeing you next time.
Great job.
Bye.
