Hello, my name is Mrs. Tipping and I'm really looking forward to learning with you today about our spaces through drawing and painting.
We're going to do lots of thinking, talking, and exploring together in this lesson.
So, shall we get started? Let's go.
By the end of today's lesson, you will be able to use your imagination to draw and paint a dream building.
Before we start, I would like to introduce you to some keywords.
We'll be using these keywords during the lesson, so it might be a good idea to write these words down.
The keywords we'll be using today are imagination and texture.
I'm going to say those words again and I would like you to repeat them after me.
Imagination.
Texture.
Good job.
Now let's take a look at what these words mean.
Imagination is an idea in your head about something you have not experienced in the real world.
Texture is how something feels when it is touched.
Pause the video here to make a note of these keywords, and when you're ready to continue, press play.
We've got a couple more keywords we're going to have a look at.
We've got sketch and sketching and we've got detail.
I'll say those words again and I'd like you to repeat them after me.
Sketch.
Detail.
Well done.
Now, what do those words mean? Well, to sketch something means to make quick and simple drawings to show ideas or the things we see.
Detail is a small part of something that adds to its overall appearance.
Pause the video here to make a note of these keywords, and when you're ready to continue, press play.
These are the learning cycles that we'll be working through together in today's lesson, using your imagination and painting your dream building.
In this first learning cycle, we're going to explore using your imagination.
Imagination is when you create pictures, stories, and ideas in your mind.
These can be things that are not real or that may happen in the future.
It's like a magic power.
Jacob is using his imagination to think of ideas for a drawing.
Maybe a flying unicorn.
That's one idea he's had.
A pirate sailing at sea.
A house made of jelly! What can you imagine? Pause the video here and give yourself some time to imagine some ideas for drawing, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you come up with? Which idea of Jacob's did you like the most? Well, when creating an artwork, artists and designers might choose to draw something from real life.
We don't always have to draw things exactly how they look in real life.
Artists and designers can also use their imagination to draw different lines, shapes, and patterns.
What lines, shapes, and patterns can you see in this painting? Pause the video here and have a discussion with your partner, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What could you see? Could you see lots of different shapes of circles in there, different sizes? Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
Imagination is when you create things that are real.
Is that statement true or false? Hmm.
Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think, and press play when you're ready to continue.
If you said this statement is false, you're absolutely right.
Imagination is when you create pictures, stories, and ideas in your mind, and these can be things that are not real.
Artists and designers also take ideas from the things around them.
They use their senses to help with ideas for their work.
Can you remember what those senses are? They're popping up now.
What we can see, smell, taste, hear, and touch.
What insect do you think this fashion designer looked at to take ideas for this design? Hmm.
Pause the video here and have a discussion with your partner.
Can you come up with the insect this fashion designer might have looked at for this idea? And press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? Well, it could have been some kind of butterfly, or maybe even a moth.
This fashion designer looked at butterfly wings and used their imagination to create a dress with the same patterns and textures.
Well done if you thought it was a butterfly.
So can you see here? This is the image of the butterfly that the artist has looked at, but has also thought about how it feels, the texture of it.
Where might the architect have taken ideas from when designing this building? Hmm.
Maybe think about what they saw, what they could smell, and what they could feel.
Pause the video here and have a discussion with your partner, and press play when you're ready to continue.
Well, what did you think? Maybe you spotted that the architect has used their imagination and ideas from a flower to design this building.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
Artists and designers use their what to help with ideas for their work? Is it A, pencils; B, senses; or C, paints? What word goes in that missing gap there? Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think, and press play when you're ready to continue.
If you said the senses, you're absolutely right.
That's what artists and designers use to help with ideas for their work.
Jacob is an architect.
He is looking for ideas to design his dream house.
He says, "I've collected things that I like the shape of to help build my ideas and imagination." So you can see these images here, the different shapes that he likes.
Sketching is when you draw quick and light lines which build up to represent what we see or imagine.
Holding your pencil halfway down makes it easier to draw light, quick lines.
This helps you stay in control and make soft marks that are easy to change if you want.
Can you see there where that hand is holding the pencil? Halfway down.
Jacob uses the objects he collects to sketch ideas for his dream house.
So we've got the shapes from his imagination here.
That leaf hole shapes for the windows, thought about that basket for the shape of a balcony, and the vase shape for the main structure of his entire dream house.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
Sketching is when you draw quick and lines which build up to represent what we see or imagine.
Is it dark lines, straight lines, or light lines? Which one of these words fits in that gap there? Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think, and press play when you're ready to continue.
If you said light lines, you're absolutely right.
Sketching is when you draw quick and light lines.
This brings us to our first learning task.
I'd like you to sketch your dream house.
Now, you could collect three or more objects and you could look closely at the shapes in those objects and then use the shapes you see for ideas to design and sketch your dream house.
And then remember that you can add other shapes using your imagination.
So pause the video here and give yourself enough time to sketch your dream house, and press play when you're ready to continue.
How did you get on? Well, let's take a look.
Maybe you've sketched a dream house like this, and hopefully you've used quick, light lines to sketch your ideas and maybe used your imagination to add in some other shapes and ideas for your dream house.
Well done for having a go at that learning task.
This brings us to the second part of our lesson.
We're now going to explore painting your dream building.
How has this artist used colour and texture to add detail to the design? Pause the video here and have a discussion with your partner, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What colour and texture could you see that added detail to this design? Well, Sam is thinking about how the artist has added that detail to their artwork.
Sam can see that the artist has drawn small circles, swirls, and created stripes to add texture to the artwork.
They have also used lots of different colours with bold and thin lines.
Did you spot some of that detail there? So here's some closeups.
Can you see those swirls and then the lines and then the very small circles as well? Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an artist and architect who loved bright colours, wavy lines, and nature.
His imaginative paintings were full of spirals, patterns, and bold colours because he thought straight lines were boring.
He designed fun, colourful buildings with round windows, uneven floors, and plants on the roofs to make people feel happy and close to nature.
He used bumpy textures and different materials to make his art and buildings feel more alive.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser used bumpy textures and different materials to make his art and buildings feel more alive.
Is this statement true or false? Pause the video here, give yourself a moment to think, and press play when you're ready to continue.
If you said that that's true, you're absolutely right.
His paintings were also full of spirals, patterns, and bold colours because he thought straight lines were boring.
Alex is thinking about which colours to use to paint his dream building.
He's thinking red, yellow, blue.
And he's saying, "I know that the three primary colours can create different hot and cold colours." And he knows that if he adds white or black, he can make those colours lighter or darker too.
So he's got these key colours here.
Alex is thinking about hot and cold colours.
So here, he remembers that hot colours are warm like fire or the sun.
Can you see this range of warm colours here? We've got different reds, oranges, and yellows.
Then he's thinking about those cold colours.
"Cold colours are cool like a river or the blue ocean." Can you see there are some blues and greens and purples in there for the cool colours? Alex is now thinking about how he can mix colours.
He says, "I remember that adding white makes a colour lighter and that this is called tinting." And you can see we add this white here and we get this lighter tint of green.
He also thinks about how he can mix the colours and he thinks about adding black, because that makes a colour darker, and this is known as shading.
So can we see when we add that black there to the green, we get a darker shade of green? Now, when shading, you only need to add a small amount of black.
So that's a really important thing to remember.
Artists also use colours to represent mood.
So, we've got this colour here representing that angry or mad mood.
Maybe this colour for worried or surprised.
This colour for sad or lonely.
Maybe this colour for embarrassed or uncomfortable.
This colour yellow here for joyful and free, or this colour for proud or brave.
So we could represent those moods with these different colours.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
Which colour could represent anger, red, yellow, or blue? Pause the video here and have a quick discussion with your partner, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? If you said red, you're absolutely right.
Well done.
It's important to remember that colours represent different moods for different people though.
We can apply paint in different ways.
How do you think the artist has applied this paint? Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What could you see there? How has this artist applied this paint? Well, this is sgraffito.
It's a technique where you scratch into a surface such as paint to show another colour underneath.
Impasto is a painting technique where you apply the paint very thickly to create texture.
Can you see where that paint has been applied there, really thickly to create that texture? Alex wants to use paint to show texture and detail when painting his dream building.
He thinks about the techniques he already knows.
So he's got sgraffito.
How else can Alex show texture using paint? Hmm.
Pause the video here and have a discussion with your partner about the techniques that he could use to show texture, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? Well, you could have come up with impasto, which is applying that paint really thickly.
Could also do swirls, maybe even do stripes, or we could even do a gradient where the colour is darker, then gets lighter.
What painting techniques would you like to use? Pause the video here and have a discussion with your partner about which techniques you would use, and press play when you're ready to continue, What did you think? I think I would go for swirls and impasto on my painting.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
Which image shows a sgraffito painting technique? Is it A, B, or C? Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think, and press play when you're ready to continue.
If you said it's B, you're absolutely right.
Sgraffito is when paint is laid onto a surface and then scratched into to create detail and texture.
This brings us to our final learning task.
I'd like you to experiment with the colours and painting techniques you would like to use.
So choose and mix your colour, then select your painting techniques.
Then have a go at experimenting with the different colours and textures you want to include on your dream building and repeat.
So pause the video here and give yourself enough time to have a go at experimenting with colours and painting techniques, and then press play when you're ready to continue.
How did you get on? Well, maybe you've got some ideas like this where you've created a gradient from light to dark, or you've painted stripes, maybe painted swirls, or you've had a go at trying something new.
Maybe some dots on top of a colour, or maybe you've used impasto.
Well done for having a go experimenting.
Now I would like you to use those colours.
I'd like you to now paint your dream building.
Now, you've got to take your sketch, use your chosen painting techniques and colours to paint your design.
Now, here Alex is saying that he's going to use a thick brush for the large areas and a small brush for the small areas.
I think that is good advice.
So pause your video here, give yourself enough time to paint your dream building, and press play when you're ready to continue.
How did you find that? Well, maybe when you painted your building, it looks like this.
And maybe you've created a gradient from light to dark like in this green section here.
Maybe you've painted swirls like on this orange section.
Maybe you've used sgraffito to create texture, or you've used impasto to create texture there by adding that thick layer of paint.
You could also have chosen to add smaller details using a fine pen like these swirls and lines here using the black.
So well done for having a go at this learning task, painting your dream building.
Before we finish this lesson, let's summarise what we've learnt about drawing and painting your dream building.
Imagination is when you create pictures, stories, and ideas in your mind.
Sketching is when you draw quick and light lines which build up to represent what we see or imagine.
You can add detail and texture to artwork using different lines, shapes, and painting techniques.
Thank you for joining me in this lesson today.
I hope to see you in the next one.
See you next time.
