Hello, my name's Miss Nadia, and I'm very excited to be teaching you your art lesson today.
I hope you really enjoy it.
Your learning outcome today is to be able to say by the end of the lesson that, "I can construct an island base using recycled materials." Your keywords today are base, which is the bottom of something that everything else sits on, construct, which is to build something using materials, and collaborate.
This is working together and sharing ideas to make something as a team.
So, your three key words today are base, construct, and collaborate.
Your lesson today is going to be split into two learning cycles.
So, that's two separate parts.
The first part of our lesson is called plan and discuss.
Let's begin.
Do you remember what collaboration means? Collaboration means working together as a team.
In art and design, artists plan and discuss their ideas first to make sure that everyone has a role.
A group of students are planning and discussing how to create the base for their paradise island.
Izzy says, "Let's look at our plan to see what we might need." And so, they go back to their drawn plan that they've created in the previous lesson, and they look at the plan view to see what they might need.
The group discuss what they might need.
Lucas says, "We could use newspaper for the waterfall." And Sofia says, "How about strong cardboard for the base?" And Izzy says, "We could scrunch up tinfoil for the trees!" And Andeep says, "Maybe egg cartons for the water slide?" What wonderful ideas the group have come up with.
I love how they've really thought about the materials that they might use and what they could do with each material to make it fit the feature that they're wanting to create.
So, for instance, Izzy suggested using tinfoil for the trees and she really imagined what it might look like if it was scrunched up to create a realistic tree effect.
What is really great too is that all of the materials that've been suggested are things that most of us already have at home and can be recycled instead of being thrown away in the bin.
Then, the group discussed their different roles.
Lucas says, "I will create the features." Izzy says, "I will draw out a map of the island on the base." Sofia says, "I will build the structure with newspaper." And Andeep says, "I will help Sofia to create the structure." Isn't this wonderful how everybody in the team is able to work well together to collaborate? What that means is that they're gonna get a really great result.
Here, we have a sentence with a missing word included.
I will say the word blank, and I would like you to use either a, b, or c to figure out what the missing word is.
In art and design, artists plan and blank their ideas first to make sure that everyone has a role.
Is the missing word hide or is it discuss, or is it shout? The missing word is discuss.
So, the sentence should read in art and design, artists plan and discuss their ideas first to make sure that everyone has a role.
Izzy is remembering ways to join materials.
Sofia says, "Glueing and taping the materials together may be useful." Are there any other ways that you can think of to join materials? Here we have glueing , and here we have taping.
Here are other ways you can join materials together.
So, this image here is called a flange, and what this does is on a tube shape or sometimes you find them on pipes, they have little sections that are snipped away and turned into these little tabs.
And what that means is you can easily connect those flat pieces to a base.
And here we have tabs, and tabs are little sections that are cut and folded to attach to a base.
How might you use these joining techniques to construct your base? Can you complete this sentence with the missing word? You can join materials with, is it a, paint, b, pencil, c, tape, or d, charcoal? And the answer is tape.
So the sentence should read, you can join materials with tape.
So now, I'm going to get you started on your first task, Task A.
In your group, decide on what roles you will take to construct your island base and the materials that you will need.
How did Task A go for you today? You may have discussed your roles and materials like this.
I will draw out the shapes onto the base.
I will create features using recycled boxes.
I will scrunch up the paper for the base.
I will help to tape the paper.
So, do remember, when you are taping and glueing , sometimes it's very useful to have a second person just to hold the items down whilst the second person adds the tape.
We are now going to move on to the second part of our lesson today, and this is called construct the base.
Here are some materials that the students collected to construct their island base.
Do you recognise any of these materials? We have got some tape, some tinfoil, some newspaper, and some egg cartons.
The base of a sculpture or structure is very important because it holds everything up, so it must be strong.
What might happen if the base is not strong? The structure might fall over.
We could use thick, strong cardboard.
An an adult helps the students to cut out the strong base of the island.
This is thick cardboard.
Izzy uses a pen to draw out the basic shapes of the island.
Why do you think she used a pen and not a pencil? Well, this is so that the lines would show up very clearly, so that when the students move on to the second stage of constructing, they can see the lines very clearly.
Let's prepare the newspaper and tape whilst we wait.
So, that's a really good idea, isn't it? To prepare the next step so that you're not just sat waiting and watching other people to complete their tasks.
That's what really good teamwork looks like.
Can you complete this sentence now to fill in this gap correctly? The base of a structure must be, is it a, colourful, is it b, strong, is it c, tall, or is it d, waterproof? And the answer is strong.
So, the base of a structure must be strong.
Sofia and Andeep worked together to scrunch and tape newspaper to the base.
Can you see how this is done? So, they're working very carefully to scrunch the newspaper to the correct size and to fit it inside the shapes.
And it would be very useful at this stage to work together, to have one person to hold whilst the second person tapes.
This can create the hilly areas of the island.
We can build layers of newspaper for the high areas.
Sofia and Andeep are struggling to work on the same space together and keep clashing.
Oh dear.
What can they do? "Should I scrunch the paper first?" "Great idea! Then if you hold it down, I can stick!" Andeep has an idea.
Look what Andeep's created.
"I'll create a tape station to help speed up the sticking process." What a wonderful idea.
Here's the tape station.
Sofia and Andeep continue to build the layers of newspaper onto the base.
Can you see how it's progressing? Wow.
While Sofia and Andeep are constructing the base, Lucas and Izzy feel left out.
Oh dear.
What can they do? "Izzy, let's create the buildings and other features that we can add later?" "Great idea!" Izzy and Lucas want to create a water slide using an egg carton.
"Let's cut the carton into shape." "Then we can create a flange at the bottom to attach it to the base once it is ready!" Do you remember the flange? This helps to create a surface area.
Then, the egg carton shape can be stuck on much easily to the base.
And here's what that looks like.
Can you answer this true or false question? When working collaboratively, everyone must do the same thing at the same time.
Is this true or is this false? The answer is false.
Why do you think this is false? When working collaboratively, each member of the group can have a different role.
And we saw, didn't we, in that example, that having different roles is very helpful.
It's sometimes more useful to have different members of the team doing different tasks at the same time.
For your second task of our lesson today, in your group, I would like you to work together as a team to collaborate and construct your island base.
Ask an adult to help to cut out the base.
Draw out the shapes.
Remember, it's much more visible and clear if you use a pen to draw out your shapes.
If you need to use a pencil first just to make sure you're being accurate, then that's absolutely fine too.
Just remember to go over those outlines with a pen.
Scrunch and tape newspaper to the base.
And then, I'd like you to continue to build and create layers.
Remember in our example the ways in which the students work together as a team and remember that you have a plan in place already for who will complete which tasks.
And do remember that other members of the group can work on other parts of the island whilst the base is being created.
So, some people can be creating buildings or other structures that will then get added to the base later.
Have fun, enjoy, and I will see you when you complete the task.
How did you get on with the task today? You may have created an island base that looks like this.
So as you can see, we've got our shapes all drawn out in pen, and lots of pieces of newspaper and recycle paper have been scrunched up and taped within these shapes to create hilly areas that have been taped down very securely and neatly.
And although it's not quite complete, it's a really good start.
You may also have had some of your team members creating other parts of your paradise island separately that can then be attached to the base.
So, we're gonna summarise our lesson today.
So, our lesson today was all about constructing a paradise island, and this was to be completed collaboratively in your group.
So, collaboration is an important part of creating large-scale artworks.
It's so important because having different members of the team doing different tasks means that we can get things done quicker, more creatively, and to a higher standard.
You do have to remember to communicate well though to make sure that everybody is clear on their roles and that everybody is feeling happy and nobody is being left out.
Sculptors use different materials like cardboard and tape to build frameworks.
A base provides support for a sculpture.
And remember, it's so important that that base is really strong because the base is what's going to hold everything up in place.
Collaboration helps manage big tasks like constructing a group sculpture.
I really hope that the collaboration went very well today in your team.
I've really enjoyed our lesson today, and I'm really looking forward to coming back soon and learning with you again.
Thank you.
Bye bye.
