Hello, my name's Miss Nadia, and I'm here today to teach you your art lesson, and I'm really excited about what we're going to be doing today.
We are going to be completing our paradise island, and you're gonna continue to work collaboratively to add further details.
The lesson outcome today is to be able to say at the end of the lesson that, "I can decorate a papier-mache paradise island." There are three keywords today in our lesson.
The first one is detail.
Detail is small parts added to make the artwork more interesting or realistic.
Your second keyword is reflect, and this is to think about your work, to see what you well at and what to improve.
And your third keyword today is atmosphere.
And this is the mood or feeling shown in your artwork.
So your keywords today are detail, reflect, and atmosphere.
And today's lesson is separated into two parts.
The first part of our lesson we're gonna begin with soon is called "Painting 3D Artwork." How do you think the artist has added colour to this sculpture? Sofia says, "It looks like the artist has painted the island." What do you think? Doesn't it create a lovely effect? Can you see all those different colours and tones, and how it makes the paradise island look really realistic? A group of students are working on a project together to create a papier-mache paradise island.
Discuss with your partner the four steps that they have taken so far.
The images on the screen should help to provide a reminder for you of the four steps that have been taken so far.
So far, they've worked collaboratively to create a plan.
So this was a drawn plan of a paradise island that they decided on together.
They have mapped out the island on the base, and they've made that really clear, so that they can move on to the next step, which is to construct the base.
And they did this by working together in their teams to scrunch paper up, hold it carefully into one of the shapes, and tape it so that it creates hilly areas.
And they have also added papier-mache to strengthen the base, but also this has created surface texture.
Collaboration means working together as a team.
Did you remember that? When collaborating, you can share ideas, help each other, finish faster, and you can also have fun.
The artists look at the plan, and they discuss what their next step should be.
Lucas says, "Would anyone mind if I paint the sports features?" And Sofia says, "I can build the library to add later." And Izzy says, "Should I paint the sand?" And Andeep says, "I can paint the park." Isn't it a wonderful idea to go back to your plan at this stage to really remind yourself of what you wanted to do at the start of the project? I also really like the way that this team is working really well, and collaborating exceptionally well to make sure that everybody gets to have a part in designing and making their paradise island.
When collaborating, you can.
Is it A, share ideas, B, help each other, C, finish faster, or D, have fun? This can be more than one answer.
And the answer is all of them.
Did you get that right? Izzy uses the flange joining technique to attach additional features to the base.
Can you remember the flange joining technique? Here's a diagram of it on the screen.
And she has used technique to attach the library and the water slide.
How do you think Lucas joined the sports features to the base? Well, Lucas says, "I have used PVA glue to join the sports features onto the base." Did you guess correctly? The base is now ready to paint, and Andeep looks at an image of an island for inspiration.
What a good idea that is.
The greenery has light and dark tones.
How will Andeep mix the light and dark tones for the greenery? Well, Andeep mixes yellow and blue to make green, and then, to make it lighter for the lighter tones, he then adds some white, and for those darker tones, where there might be a shadow effect, for instance, he has added black.
Andeep notices a yellow green colour within the greenery.
So we look very closely at this image.
We can see where the palm trees are, and certain parts of the other trees, we can see areas of a yellow-green colour.
How might he mix this colour? Well, Andeep says, "I will add more yellow to create this colour." So he's mixing the green colour, using blue and yellow, but this time he is using extra yellow to make it a yellow-green colour.
I've got a question for you now where there are two missing words.
I'm gonna say blank, and you need to add in those two words from the list below.
To create light and dark tones of a colour, you can add blank and blank.
Is it A, red and blue, B, yellow and red, C, black and white, or D, blue and red? And the answer is black and white.
As a group, what I'd like you to do next is to paint the base of your island.
And here we can see an example of what that might look like.
This is a really great example here, because you can see how they've painted so neatly to separate the green area from that beach area at the bottom, and also, if you look very carefully, there's some darker tones that create shadows, and some lighter tones that create highlights in those green, hilly areas.
Before you start this task, I would like you to consider adding different tones to bring the island to life and to add atmosphere.
So just as we saw earlier, you might mix your colour.
For example, to mix the green, you might add the yellow and the blue, but then to make it a lighter tone, you might add some white.
And to make a darker tone, you could add some black.
Remember to work collaboratively in your groups.
That means taking in turns.
Enjoy the task, and you can pause here, and I'll be here once you've completed it.
How did you get on with Task A today? Did you manage to paint the base of your island? And does it look anything like this? Here we've got the different tones to bring the island to life and to add atmosphere.
We are now going to move on to the second part of our lesson today, which is called "Improving 3D Artwork." Artists improve their artwork by adding extra details, which bring it to life and ads atmosphere.
How can the group bring their 3D island to life? The group are reflecting and discussing ways to improve their island.
Lucas says, "The sports features need painting," and Sofia says, "We need to paint the waterfall." Izzy says, "We could make some trees," and Andeep says, "The water slides need painting." And this is another really great example of the group working in collaboration together, each taking turns to say what they'd like to do to improve their island.
And haven't they all got such wonderful ideas? I really like how each group member listens to other people's ideas.
And by doing that, it really does improve the quality of the final desert island piece.
Can you complete the sentence by filling in the gap with a missing word? Artists make improvement to their artwork by, is it A, starting again, B, adding detail, or C, working alone? And the answer is B, adding detail.
Artists make improvement to their artwork by adding detail.
Izzy is creating the trees.
"I used a cotton bud and foil to create the texture of the trees." If you look very carefully, you can see how Izzy created the trees by wrapping up the foil into a bowl, and really scrunching it tight around the cotton bud.
So the cotton bud becomes the tree trunk, and the foil becomes the leaves.
She then paints that, which creates that lovely textural effect.
And it's secured to the base.
Isn't it starting to look really great? And here's a closeup version of those trees.
So you can see the effect that that's created.
Lucas is creating the sports features.
"I cut masking tape to create the straight lines." Look how precise.
Lucas has been so accurate creating those lines.
And if you look carefully, before he cut and stuck the masking tape down, he very carefully painted those sports features in these bright colours, one in orange and one in green.
So it creates a really realistic-looking effect of us looking down in a plan view to see those sports features.
Sofia is creating the waterfall.
"I used light and dark tones of blue to bring the waterfall to life with texture." And can you see, that makes it look like the water is really flowing? It looks so realistic.
Andeep is painting the water slides.
"I used bright colours to help the slides stand out." Oh, I'd love to be on that paradise island right now.
Going down one of those water slides, it looks like so much fun.
The group continue to work together and add detail to their island, such as painting brown tones on the mountains, adding a footpath.
And here you can see that the tree trunks have been painted.
So detailed, isn't it? Bit by bit, the group work together to bring the island to life.
And we can see how at every stage more and more detail has been added.
Can you complete the sentence now using one of the missing words? Adding texture to a sculpture helps to.
Is it A, bring it to life, B, cover parts up, or C, get it done quicker.
And the answer is bring it to life.
So the sentence should read.
Adding texture to a sculpture helps to bring it to life.
So we're going to be starting on Task B be shortly.
As a group, reflect and make improvements to your island.
So you could add extra features with texture, such as trees.
You could paint with different tones to bring the island to life.
You could add more detail to some of the features.
So I hope this task goes well for you.
Remember to continue to work collaboratively, and making those little changes to add those further details to your paradise island.
I hope the task went well.
Now let's have a look at an example of how you could have improved your island, which could look something like this.
You may have added extra features with texture, such as trees.
You may have painted with different tones to add atmosphere.
You may have added more detail to some of the features.
So unfortunately we've come to the end of our lesson now.
But before we go, I do want to summarise the key points of our lesson, which was to decorate a papier-mache paradise island.
Artists use colour to express ideas and atmosphere in 3D artworks.
Painting techniques can add texture and realism to sculptural surfaces.
Adding final details help to bring a sculpture to life, and reflecting on your work helps you to recognise your achievements and to make improvements.
I really hope you manage to decorate your papier-mache paradise island to the standard that you hope to today.
And I hope you continue to work collaboratively in your team in order to add further texture and detail.
I really hope what you've achieved today has created, and added, to the atmosphere of your paradise island.
Thank you so much for working so hard today in our lesson, and throughout the paradise island project.
I hope you really enjoyed it.
I have, and I look forward to seeing you again soon.
