Hello, my name's Miss Nadia, and I'm going to be teaching you your art lesson today.

I'm really excited.

I hope you have a great lesson.

Your learning outcome today is by the end of the session, to be able to say, I can invent and draw a paradise island.

You have three key words today.

The first key word is collaborate.

Collaborate means working together and sharing ideas to make something as a team.

Invent and this is to think of and create something new using your imagination.

And your third keyword today is plan view.

This is a drawing that shows what a place looks like from above.

So your three keywords today are collaborate, invent, and plan view.

Your lesson today is going to be split into three learning cycles.

So you have three different parts to our lesson today and we will begin now with a first part, which is called understanding a plan view.

What is the difference between these two images? The first image is from a plan view and the second image is from an eye view.

How do you see that these views are different? Well, let me show you.

A plan view means looking at something from above.

So, it's the sort of angle that a bird flying above would see that from.

So, this can be a drawing or an image that shows what a place looks like if you are looking down on it from above, just like this seagull here.

It's also known as a bird's eye view.

A plan view reminds me of a bird's eye camera angle in photography.

This is a picture of a bird's eye camera angle.

So it's looking down, isn't it from above.

Here we can see, a little diagram of the camera pointing down in the bird's eye view.

Jun is thinking of where else he's seen a plan view before.

Hmm.

Look, he's having a good think about it.

Do you know where he might have seen this plan view before? Well, one place he may have seen a plan view is from the window of an aeroplane.

Have you ever been in an aeroplane and looked down to see everything from above? The second way you may have seen a plan view before is from a map.

Where else have you seen a plan view? Plan view is also known as: is it A, top view; B, bird's eye view; C, cloud view; or D, sky view? Have a little think.

See if you can select the correct answer.

Plan view is also known as it's bird's eye view.

So a plan view is also known as bird's eye view.

Did you get that correct? A plan view is helpful for builders, designers, and artists when they are planning where things go and how things fit together.

Jun is thinking about which things he can see in plan view.

I can see the shapes and layouts of things such as buildings, paths, and trees.

And we can see this example on the screen.

Now, can you see the trees? Can you see the buildings? Can you see the paths? Jun is thinking about things he can't see in plan view.

He says, "I can't see the height of things such as how tall a tree is or the front or sides of objects." Can you see how tall any of these trees are in this plan view? Can you figure out how tall the buildings are? Can you see the sides or the front of these objects? No, we can't see this in a plan view.

Jun's right.

Which three things can you not see in plan view? So you're going to choose three things that you cannot see in plan view.

Okay, so here are the options.

A, tops of buildings; B, people's faces; C, how tall something is; D, front of buildings.

Have a little think.

Remember to select three answers.

The three things that you cannot see in a plan view is people's faces, which is B; C, how tall something is, and D, the front of buildings.

However we can see the tops of buildings.

Imagine now that you are a bird looking at your favourite location from above.

For task A, I would like you to discuss with a partner the plan view that you might see in this particular example.

You may have said, I can see the river flowing through the city.

I can see roads, bridges, parks, and train lines.

I can also see green shapes for the parks too.

We are now going to move on to the second part of our lesson, which is called Exploring ideas.

Lucas is inventing an island and is thinking about which features to include based on his interests.

Have a look at the clues here.

So, we have got these things here.

What do you think Lucas might be interested in? "I love painting landscapes.

At the weekend, I like to watch basketball with my family.

I also like spending time in nature with trees.

It makes me feel calm." Did you get any of that correct? What might Lucas include in his island to represent his interests? He might have a painting studio.

He might include a nature park.

He could also have a basketball court.

When inventing something new artists and designers create mind maps to help explore their ideas.

Lucas creates a mind map to help invent his island.

So, he begins with the word my island in the middle, and he puts a big circle around it.

He then adds an arrow or a line, and he writes the word, basketball court.

And then he adds a park with trees and a lake, a painting studio, an orchid, a book shop, and an animal sanctuary.

That's a lot of things, isn't it, in his Paradise Island.

What a great mind map! I'd like to complete this sentence by filling in the gap.

The possible words are listed below as A, B, C, and D.

Artists and designers create blank to help explore ideas.

Is it A, paintings; B, mind maps; C, drawings, or D, photographs? So artists and designers create blank to help explore ideas.

And the answer is mind maps.

Did you get that right? So what I'd like you to do now for task B today is to create your own mind map of ideas of what you would like to include on your Paradise Island.

So what I'd like you to do is I'd like you to consider what your interests are, what features to include to represent your interests.

This is a really exciting activity to complete.

I hope you come up with lots of ideas for your mind map just like Lucas did, but your ideas need to be unique to your interests.

So, here's an example of what Sophia created.

You may have created a mind map like this, water park, palm trees, a beach, caves, a library, and a smoothie shop.

Wow, doesn't this sound like an exciting paradise island? The third part of our lesson today is called combining ideas to invent a shared place.

The word collaboration means working together as a team.

In art and design, this is when people share ideas and they can help each other and make one big piece of art.

TeamLab is a group of artists that create collaborative artwork.

The artists and designers work together like a team to make art.

So here are some of the artworks that TeamLab have produced.

The first piece we're going to look at is called, Floating Flower Garden.

And this is a room full of real flowers, like a magical garden that comes alive.

And the second artwork that we're going to be looking at today is called, Universe of Water Particles.

And this is a giant waterfall made of light that moves like water around your body.

Can you answer the following true or false question: collaboration means creating something by yourself? And the answer is false.

Why do you think it's false? The reason it's false, is collaboration means working together as a team.

A group of pupils are collaborating to create a plan view of an imaginary island.

They all have different ideas.

They share their ideas.

Should we hear what their ideas are? So Lucas's ideas is that he says, I would like a basketball court.

And Sophia's idea is that she has said that I think a library would be better.

And Izzy says, no, a football pitch.

And Andeep thinks that a park would be best.

How can they collaborate and work together? Let's choose one feature each to include on the island.

They decide to vote on the shape of the island so that the choice is fair.

Who thinks it should be a circle? And in turn, they put their hands up.

Most people in the group think that the island should be a circle shape.

Andeep draws the park.

Sophia draws the library.

Lucas and Izzy draw the basketball court and the football pitch.

The group continue to take in turns to add more features.

"Should we add a water park?" Great idea, Izzy.

And there we have the water park.

Isn't that a fabulous imaginary island with all their ideas taken into consideration and included? Look what happens when you work together as a team.

When collaborating, what can you do to make sure choices are fair? Is the answer A, vote for ideas; B, include something for everyone; C, listen to everyone's ideas? And the answer is all of them.

You should vote for ideas and include something for everyone and listen to everyone's ideas.

And that makes sure that your choices are all fair for everybody collaborating in that group.

As a group, you are now going to complete a task.

So our task today, task C is to create a plan view drawing of an imaginary island.

So you need to remember to work collaboratively to share your ideas, take in turns to draw the different features and make sure that at least one of everybody's ideas are included.

How did you get on with our task today? You may have graded an imaginary island like this.

And as you can see, we have got a library and a waterfall, a skate park, a football court, a basketball court, and a waterpark in this imaginary island that's been created collaboratively.

We've come to the end of our lesson now, but before you go, I would like to summarise some key points that you should have learned from our lesson today.

So, artists and designers often work collaboratively to develop creative projects.

Do you remember we discussed a group of artists called TeamLab that worked together in a team to create different types of art? You can combine different ideas and drawings to invent a shared place.

So just in the same way that you created your collaborative piece today, you can take lots of ideas from different people and you can really make something spectacular using everybody's ideas.

Discussing and refining ideas make stronger creative choices.

So just by having a team of artists together just like you and your team today that you work with, it helps you to be even more creative by talking through your ideas.

Drawing from a plan view helps you to imagine the layout of the place.

So you get to see the bird's eye view, the plan view of your whole island.

And although you might not see the front of buildings, or you might not even see the height of buildings, you will at least be able to see exactly how everything is going to fit in and where everything will be placed on your island just like a map.
