Hello, my name is Mrs. Tipping and I'm really looking forward to learning with you today about creative careers.
We're going to do lots of thinking, talking and exploring together in this lesson.
So shall we get started? Let's go.
By the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to create a makeup design inspired by a festival of your choice.
Before we start, I would like to introduce you to some keywords.
We'll be using these keywords during the lesson, so it might be a good idea to write these words down.
The keywords we'll be using today are makeup artist, mood board, and focal points.
I'm gonna say those again and I would like you to repeat them after me.
Makeup artist, mood board, and focal point.
Good job.
Now let's think in more detail about what these keywords mean by taking a look at their definitions.
A makeup artist is a professional who applies cosmetics and other products to enhance or transform a person's appearance.
A mood board is a visual collage or collection of images.
A focal point refers to the part of the face that stands out the most and grabs attention.
So pause the video here to make a note of these keywords, and when you're ready to continue, press play.
These are the learning cycles we'll be working through together in today's lesson, we're going to take a look at what a makeup artist is and also creating a design for festival makeup.
So in this first learning cycle, we're going to explore what a makeup artist is.
In what ways can makeup transform a person into a character or tell a story? Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? Well, a makeup artist is someone who uses makeup to change or enhance a person's appearance.
Like in this image here we can see how the makeup has been used to change this person's appearance.
A makeup artist can work in many different areas such as film, theatre, fashion, TV, special effects or live events such as festivals.
Makeup artists use their knowledge of colour, skin types and design to create different looks.
This might include natural makeup for a photo shoot, dramatic designs for a stage performance or fantasy styles for a festival or film.
Makeup artists often work closely with actors, models, directors or costume designers to help bring a character or theme to life.
Makeup artists play a key part in storytelling and performance.
They can help the audience understand a character's personality, age, mood or even physical condition without a single word being spoken.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
Which example shows a design by a makeup artist? Is it A, B, or C? Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? If you said it's B, you're absolutely right.
A makeup artist is someone who uses makeup to change or enhance a person's appearance, whereas a milliner or fashion designer creates hats and clothing.
Pause the video here and have a discussion with your partner and press play when you're ready to continue.
What do you think? Why do people wear makeup for festivals? Looking at this picture here, why is this person wearing that makeup do you think? Well, makeup plays an important role in many celebrations around the world.
It often is used to express creativity, to show cultural identity, and help people feel connected to the spirit of an event or festival.
In some traditions, makeup is deeply symbolic.
For example, in the.
(speaking in foreign language) The Day of the Dead, in Mexico, people paint their faces like colourful skulls to honour loved ones who have passed away.
In other celebrations like Carnival in Brazil, people use bold colours, glitter, and dramatic designs to stand out and express joy and freedom.
You can see an example of an image here of someone who has had their makeup done for the Day of the Dead festival in Mexico.
You see how that is expressed as a skull.
It's also very beautiful and bright with some really interesting designs.
Makeup can also help people transform into characters, performers or symbolic figures.
In festivals, it can add excitement and visual impact.
Makeup is much more than decoration.
It is a powerful way to express identity, emotions and celebration, and it helps bring people together in shared joy and creativity.
Some influential makeup artists might include Judith Bautista, also known as Kahlovera Or Donni Davy, or Ines Borgonjon or even Arabia Felix.
Arabia Felix is a makeup artist and content creator known for detailed and dramatic makeup transformations.
He has over 100,000 followers on a variety of social media platforms where he creates tutorials for people to follow.
Felix's tutorials cover everything from concealing natural eyebrows, face taping techniques to shape and lift and styling synthetic wigs, including adding curls.
This videos show how makeup, wigs and costumes can completely change how someone looks, such as turning someone into a movie character or fantasy figure.
Judith Bautista known as Kahlovera specialises in traditional.
(speaking in foreign language) Day of the Dead Makeup.
Bautista specialises in sugar skull face painting.
She emphasises the cultural significance of.
(speaking in foreign language) And educates others on its traditions.
Bautista advocates for respectful participation in.
(speaking in foreign language) Highlighting that the holiday is about honouring loved ones, not about creating a scary or Halloween style look.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
Makeup is only used to cover imperfections and cannot be used to tell a story, represent a theme or have with one's appearance.
Is this statement true or false? Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think and press play when you are ready to continue.
What did you think, if you said that's false, you're absolutely right, But why is that false? Pause the video here and have a discussion with your partner about why this statement is false and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you discuss? If you said something like, makeup is much more than decoration.
It is a powerful way to express identity, emotions and celebration, and it helps bring people together in shared joy and creativity, then you're right, well done.
This brings us to our first learning task.
I'd like you to explore the work of your chosen makeup artist.
You might choose to research their life and influences, explore some of the looks they have specialised in and create some of your own designs based upon their work.
So pause the video here and give yourself enough time to explore the work of your chosen makeup artist And press play when you're ready to continue.
How did you get on? Were you able to research their life And explore some of their looks? Well, you might have researched their life and influences, explored some of their signature looks and maybe even taken ideas from their work.
Izzy says, "I really like the work of Kahlovera.
She paints people's faces to look like sugar skulls, which are really colourful and full of flowers and patterns.
It's not scary at all.
It's actually a way to remember people who passed away, but in a happy, loving way.
Kahlovera makes it really fun and beautiful." So well done for exploring your chosen makeup artist.
This now brings us to the second part of our lesson.
We're going to create a design for festival makeup, and when a makeup artist begins thinking about their design, they create a mood board.
Mood board is used to show ideas and inspiration for a creative project.
It is a collection of images, colours, textures, and words that help to show the style and feeling of what you want to create.
Mood boards help artists and designers plan their work and share their ideas with others.
So taking a look, there's a mood board here.
Can you see how those different colours have been included? And some words there to give an idea of the style.
Now you can begin by adding your ideas for a colour palette to your mood board.
Izzy says, "I would like to incorporate the colours I have already used in my graphics to promote my festival." So she's got these lovely, bright colours here, a purple, green, pink, orange, and then a striking black too.
Now you could include ideas about an outfit or a headdress.
Izzy says, I will include my festival headdress as I would like the makeup to work with this look.
So maybe you want to think about the headdress that you designed and whether you want to include that, and you can also add inspirational images to your mood board.
Izzy says, I really like the idea of using gems and glitter within my makeup design.
So here she's found a couple of images that she could include.
Doesn't mean that she wants to use them exactly as they are, but she might use some of the ideas from those images as inspiration.
And you might incorporate ideas about themes for your festival through words or images.
Izzy says, "My festival has a music theme, so I've included a keyboard to inspire me on my mood board." She's got these words here, young, vibrant, energy and music to remind her of what's going to inspire her festival.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
A mood board should use at least four colours in your design.
Incorporate themes that might be useful to your design or have images for design only.
So pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think about how you might finish this sentence and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? Well if you said a mood board should incorporate themes that might be useful to your design, you are absolutely right.
Any words or images can be used to describe a theme in a mood board.
Now, when you've gathered your ideas together on your mood board, you can begin to design your makeup look.
You might begin by sketching a simple outline for a face.
Izzy says, "I'm keeping my line simple and clear so they don't distract from the makeup design." Can you see this example of an outline of a face here? Now you can have a focal point for your design.
Makeup artists choose one main area to focus on, so the look stays balanced and does not look too heavy.
So the focal point might be around the eyes, or maybe it's the forehead or the lips or the cheeks.
It's up to you.
Izzy says, "I have been most interested in the eye area, so have chosen this as my focal point." You might think about adding gems, feathers or glitter to your design.
Izzy says, "I'm going to include gems and glitter around my eyes as this gives a youthful and fun look to my design." Now, finally, you might ask one of your friends to give you feedback on your design, thinking about how you could maybe improve it.
So if this is Izzy's here, she's got that focal point around the eye.
She's also got some colour on the lips there.
But Lucas says, "I think you could use larger gems to make a really bold statement around the eyes." So think carefully about how you could give your friend some feedback and how your friend could also give you some feedback on your design.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
A focal point in makeup design means to highlight all areas of the face equally.
Is this statement true or false? Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think and press play when you are ready to continue.
What did you think? If you said that's false, you're absolutely right.
Why is that statement false? Pause the video here and have a discussion with your partner about why that statement is false and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you discuss? Perhaps you said something like, using a focal point means a makeup artist chooses one main area to focus on, so the look stays balanced.
For example, if you wear bold lipstick, the eyes might be kept simple.
Or if you wear bright eye makeup, the lips might be more natural.
So well done.
This now brings us to our final learning task.
First of all, I'd like you to create a makeup mood board.
You might include ideas about a colour palette, suggest ideas for an outfit or headdress that works with your makeup, to gather useful or inspirational images and to include your festival theme.
So pause the video here and give yourself some time to create your makeup mood board and press play when you're ready to continue.
How did you get on? Did you select your colour palette and find some good images for inspiration? Well, maybe your mood board looks a bit like this with your colour palette included, some suggested ideas for an outfit or a headdress that works with your makeup.
Some useful inspirational images like with this image here with the glitter.
And you've also included your festival theme through an image or some words.
Now, for the second part of this learning task, I'd like you to create a design for festival makeup.
So sketch a simple outline, then include a focal point to your design.
Use embellishments such as gems, feathers or glitter, and then ask for feedback on your ideas.
So pause the video here and give yourself enough time to have a go at creating a design for festival makeup and press play when you're ready to continue.
How did you get on? Well, let's take a look at this example here that Izzy has created.
Izzy says, "I think I have designed a really clear focal point around the eyes with this makeup look.
I have used gems and strong colours to create a young, bright design suitable for my music festival," but she did get some feedback and she said, "I tried to respond to the feedback I received by adding more gems around the eyes, and I also added gems above the eyebrows." So you can see that focal point around the eyes is even bolder now.
So well done for having a go at creating a design for a festival makeup look.
Before we finish this lesson, let's summarise what we've learned about creative careers as a makeup artist.
A makeup artist is a professional who applies cosmetics and other products to enhance or transform a person's appearance.
Mood boards can be used by makeup artists to gather ideas to inform their design, and in makeup design, focal points can be used to draw attention to particular areas of the face.
Thank you for joining me in this lesson today.
I hope to see you in the next one, see you next time.
