Hello, I'm Mr. Little.
Welcome to today's computing lesson.
It's from the unit Desktop Publishing.
And we are gonna be learning all about applying a layout in desktop publishing.
I hope you're ready to work hard and try your best, and that'll make today's lesson a success.
Let's get started.
By the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to plan, create, and use a template for a specific purpose.
There are two keywords that I want you to look and listen out for in today's lesson.
The first word is certificate, my turn, certificate, your turn.
And a certificate is a special document that shows you've achieved something.
I'm sure you might have received a certificate before for something.
The second keyword is purpose, my turn, purpose, your turn.
And that's the reason why you are doing something.
So remember to look and listen out for those keywords in today's lesson.
There are two parts to today's lesson.
First of all, we are gonna plan an award certificate.
Here's Jacob and Sofia, and they're talking about certificates that they have received.
Jacob says, "I received a certificate from my cooking club for winning the baking competition." Sofia says, "I received the certificate from my teacher for excellent effort in my science lessons." I wonder if you've ever received a certificate for something you've achieved before.
A certificate is a special document that shows you've achieved something.
Let's look at some examples.
Here's Sofia's certificate.
So she's received a great effort award that's been awarded to Sofia for trying her best in science, and she received that on the 11th of March.
Here's Jacob's certificate that he received, it was first place and awarded to Jacob for winning the baking competition, and that was on the 2nd of February.
I wonder if these look similar to any certificates you've received before.
Now, when you are planning or designing a certificate, often, certificates have templates, and those templates include placeholders.
Let's have a look at this template in a bit more detail.
We've got a placeholder for text at the top, and that is the title of the purpose of the certificate.
Then we've got a placeholder for an image that is relevant to the certificate.
Remember, on Jacob's example there, there was a cupcake, 'cause it was a baking competition.
And on Sofia's example, there was a microscope, I think it was, 'cause it was relevant to science.
Often you might have the reason the certificate was awarded, so it might have been great effort in something, it might have been first place, or it might have been an award for something else.
Often, there'll be space for the person's name who received the certificate.
And obviously, if you receive the certificate, it might be your name on there.
But in Jacob and Sofia's example, it is their names.
Then often, there is space for the date that it's been awarded.
And when you are planning a certificate, you don't always have to put all of the detail on the certificate in the same order.
There might be an image at the top or the bottom, and there might be more or less text somewhere sometimes.
When you are using certificate templates, they can have different orientations and layouts.
So let's look at a couple of different examples here.
We've got a portrait orientation first.
Remember, that's taller than it is wide, and we've got space for text at the top, we've got two text placeholders, we've got an image in the middle, and then two text placeholders at the bottom.
And here's a different orientation.
Can you remember the name of that? It's landscape, isn't it? So this landscape orientation has a different layout, with the image at the top, and then three text placeholders at the bottom.
Often, when you're using certificate templates, the largest space has the most important text and images.
So let's look on that right-hand side example of the landscape example, the image might be quite large on this template here compared to text on the one on the left-hand side that might be slightly larger.
So the largest space often has the most important text and images.
Let's check your understanding now with a true or false statement.
Certificate templates usually have placeholders for text and images.
Is that true or false? It's true.
Well done if you selected that.
Often, when you're using certificate templates, they'll have pre-made placeholders for text and images.
So if you are planning to make an award certificate, you should think about its purpose.
There's our second keyword.
Purpose means the reason why you are doing something.
Let's go back to Sofia's example, "The purpose," she says here, "the purpose of my science certificate is my teacher congratulating me on how hard I worked in science lessons." So the purpose, remember, means the reason why you are doing something.
Now, if you've received a certificate before, it might be for a different reason, and the purpose of your certificate might be different, but here are some examples, it might be for great effort in something, and there's Sofia's example again, great effort in science lessons, or it might be for achieving something, it might be the highest score in a game, or achieving a place in a competition perhaps.
It might be for winning a competition.
What about that example we have from Jacob? He won his baking competition, didn't he? It might be first, second, third, or fourth place perhaps.
You might get a certificate for taking part in something.
You might have got a certificate before for taking part in a sports event.
And sometimes certificates might be given out for improving in something.
I remember, in my old school, we used to give out certificates every Friday for the children that have made the most improvement in something that week.
And it might be reading skills or math skills, or it might be gymnastic skills or horse riding skills or swimming skills, anything like that.
Okay, time for a check for understanding.
I want you to fill in the missing word in this sentence.
The reason why you are doing something is called the? It's purpose, isn't it? One of our keywords.
The reason why you are doing something is called the purpose.
Well done if you got that right.
So time for a practise task.
We are gonna start to plan an award certificate, but the first thing I want you to do is to draw a template for a certificate.
So there are four steps, and I've labelled them A, B, C, and D.
The first thing I want you to do is think about the purpose for your certificate.
Think about all of those examples I just gave, it might be for winning an award, for entering a competition, for coming first, second, or third place in something, for X in effort, or for trying something new perhaps.
So once you've got your purpose, then I want you to decide if you want your certificate to be portrait or landscape.
There are two orientations, aren't there? Then, once you've decided that, I want you to draw at least three placeholders on your certificate template for text, and at least one placeholder for an image.
So you have to have at least three placeholders for text and at least one placeholder for an image.
And whilst you are drawing that, you need to think really carefully about the order and the size of your placeholders.
Where might be the best place to put the text? Where might it be the best place to put the image placeholders? So you can use these templates as a guide for you.
There's one for a portrait and one for a landscape.
Remember, you just have to use one of them.
So here are two examples that you might have come up with, I've done one on the left-hand side here, with four text placeholders and one image placeholder, and that orientation is portrait.
And then the second one on the right-hand side is the orientation landscape, with one image placeholder and three text placeholders.
I thought really carefully about the order I was gonna put them in and the size of each placeholder.
Time for the second part of today's lesson now, we are going to create an award certificate.
So let's hear from Jacob again.
He has planned his award certificate.
Now, he's going to start creating it.
Jacob says, "I'm going to design an award certificate for the winner of the short story competition at my school." So the purpose of Jacob's certificate is to be first prize, or first place, for the winner of the short story competition at his school.
So let's check, what is the purpose of Jacob's certificate? Is it A, to congratulate everyone who entered, is it B, for the winner of the short story competition, or is it C, the second place in the short story competition? It's for the winner of the short story competition.
Well done if you selected B.
So the first thing Jacob needs to do from his drawing of his template is choose one that is most similar to his.
So in a blank document, Jacob says, "I'm going to add the template that has three placeholders for text and two placeholders for images." So on Jacob's certificate, there is gonna be three areas for text and two images.
Let's check your understanding now for Jacob's certificate.
Jacob wants to use a template with three text placeholders and two image placeholders.
Which template should Jacob use? I'll give you a moment to take a look.
It's B, isn't it? That is the certificate template with three placeholders for text, there's one at the top, one in the middle, and one at the bottom, and then two image placeholders.
Look at A, that only has two text placeholders and one image.
And look at C, it has three text placeholders and one image.
So the one most appropriate for Jacob to use is B.
So there we go.
Jacob has chosen this template.
Now, he's gonna replace the text and image placeholders with appropriate content.
Now, remember, Jacob's certificate is about the winner of the short story competition.
So let's see what he adds.
He's added in the text first place at the top, it looks like Sofia has won the competition.
So he's typed Sofia's name in the middle.
And he is put the purpose there of the certificate at the bottom, the short story competition.
He hasn't added his images yet.
And Jacob said, "I need text for the name of the competition." We've got that at the bottom, the short story competition.
"The text to communicate the winner's name," that's Sofia, "and the text to communicate they have won." He's put the first place at the top.
He could have put winner perhaps.
Now, Jacob is gonna add images.
He says, "I want one of my images to represent story writing and the other image to show that they have won first place." Let's see what he's added here.
It looks like he's added a medal that says the number one on it.
And that's an image that is appropriate for his certificate, because normally, if you come first place in something, particularly perhaps in sports events, you might get a medal, and then he's got looks like a hand and somebody writing, and that image is relevant and appropriate for a short story competition, 'cause often, short stories might be written using pencil or pen and paper.
And then, finally, let's have a look at what Jacob's done here, he's edited the text and images to make the certificate more visually appealing.
Let's see what he says, "I'm going to use a maximum of three different colours, one colour for the background, two colours for the text, and one for the border.
I am also going to change the font style, font size, and style." So he's definitely made his certificate look more visually appealing.
He's used different colours, looks like he's used a pink and a yellow colour, and he is changed the font style and size particularly for Sofia's name there in the middle.
So let's look back at what he had at the start.
Let's flip back some slides.
There we go.
He had a blank template.
He's now got a finished certificate.
So, now, it's time for you to put all of that knowledge into practise by creating your own award certificate.
I want you to use the templates that we've provided, or you can start on your own, but you should try to include texts and images that are appropriate for your certificate's purpose.
Edit the size of the text and the images, so they communicate clearly the purpose of the certificate.
And I want you to use a range of font styles, sizes, and colours to make it visually appealing.
So, now, you've created your award certificate, I want you to check, have you included texts and images that are appropriate for your certificate's purpose? I've given Jacob a tick here.
Remember, he's used text that says, "First place Sofia," and, "Short story competition," and two images that are relevant for the purpose of the certificate.
He's also edited the size of the text, so they communicate clearly the purpose of the certificate.
All of that text, I think it says, "The first place," at the top, I think that's the largest part.
My eye is drawn there first.
Sofia's name is clear, it's in a different colour of font and a different style of font, and that makes it stand out.
And then he's got short story competition in a slightly smaller text size at the bottom.
And he's done that there, he's done that third bullet point.
He's used a range of font style, sizes, and colours to make it really visually appealing.
I love the border he's put around the edge there too.
All of the templates available are in this lesson's downloadable materials if you need to use them.
Before we finish today's lesson, let's summarise what we've learned together.
Templates for reward certificates have text and image placeholders.
And hopefully, you created your own template that you could use.
Award certificates nearly always have text and images that are specific to the award.
Let's remember Jacob's example for Sofia in the short story, he had text that said, "First place," text that said Sofia had won, and that she'd won the short story competition.
And the two images he selected were that gold medal, that first-place medal, and the hand that was writing.
And hopefully, you've created your own award certificate, and throughout that process, that requires planning and editing.
You have to think carefully beforehand what you want to do, what the purpose of your certificate is, then you have to go and do it.
And when you do it, you might have to edit or change things to make it look as great as possible.
Thanks for learning with me today.
See you again soon.
