Hello everyone.

Welcome to Computing.

My name is Ms. Franson, and it's really good to have you here in my lesson today.

Are you ready to do some learning about animation? Okay, then let's get started.

This lesson is called adding media to an animation, and by the end of this lesson you will be able to evaluate the effect of adding other media to an animation.

Let's look at our keywords for today.

So we have got two keywords today and they are really important words that you will hear all the way through the lesson.

So I want you to really pay attention now, make sure your ears are switched on and listening because when I say the words and the definitions, I want you to be able to understand them for later in the lesson.

The first key keyword is media.

Media.

Media is pictures, text, videos, and sounds.

The second keyword is editing software.

Editing software.

Editing software is a programme that lets you edit and change a file.

So when we are working today through this lesson, make sure you're listening carefully for media and editing software, our two keywords.

In the first part of this lesson, you are going to add media to improve an animation.

What is media? Jacob's going to give us our answer here.

Media is pictures, text, videos, and sounds.

So in the examples here, you can see some sounds.

That picture of the music notes moving is an indication of sound.

We've got pictures, we've got some familiar faces there in the pictures, and we've got an example of text.

And in that swirling writing it says, "The End." Like you'd see in many old films. All of these are examples of media.

Media is used in films, TV shows, games, and adverts.

Why do you think media is used? You could pause the video here and have a think about that.

There's some examples of media here also on the slide to help you think.

Welcome back, well done for thinking about media.

Maybe you were thinking of media that you have seen, or media that you've used in some projects.

Let's look at the first type of media together, which is text.

Text is words or numbers that are written or printed to share information or tell a story.

So you can see on this slide right now, there's lots of examples of text as I'm working it through with you.

So we have titles, that is a type of text.

And the titles come at the beginning of an animation, and they usually tell us the animation's name.

So in our example box here, we've got "The Roman Battle" and that text is sharing the name of the animation story with you.

We've also got credits.

Credits are a different kind of text.

They're used in a different way.

They come at the beginning or at the end of a project, and they tell us who created the animation.

So you might in the cinema, when you get to the end of a film, the credits start to come up and they roll from, sometimes from the bottom to the top of the screen, and they say the names of all the people involved in creating the film.

So in the example box here, we've got, "Written by: Jun, Filmed by: Sofia.

With help from: Alex and Jacob." Text can also be used during an animation to share information or explain what's happening.

So Jun is telling us here, "I'm using text to explain what's happening in my animation.

So this is Jun's Roman Soldier animation, and he has overlaid text over the top, "Two soldiers meet" to give a bit more information about what's happening in that scene.

So in this way, Jun is using text to explain what's happening in his story.

Let's do a check here.

What's a good reason to add text to an animation? Is it A, to make the animation longer, B, to make the animation louder, or C, to tell people who made the animation? Pause the video to think about your answer.

Welcome back.

The answer was C.

You would add text to an animation to tell people who made the animation.

Well done if you got that one right.

Now let's look at another piece of media together.

Let's look at sound.

Sounds are used to create a mood or excitement.

Sofia says, "This piece of music is making me feel excited." And Alex says, "This sounds a bit spooky.

I am wondering what will happen next." So you might have had this experience when you are listening to a piece of music, or you hear a certain sound, it might make you feel something in your body, and that's what's so special about music.

It can really give us feelings like that.

Sound is used to create a mood or excitement in that way when we add it as a piece of media to a project.

Media can be used for many different purposes.

It can be used to make a project more interesting or to share information.

What kinds of media could you add to your animation? Maybe you want to add text, maybe you want to add sound.

Maybe you want to add pictures or video.

Once you have recorded your animation, you should save it to your device.

Once it is saved, you can import your animation into the video editing software.

Oh, I noticed one of our keywords there.

So editing software is one of our keywords.

Editing software is a special kind of programme, or app, that will let you change or edit video.

And did you notice that purple word that was highlighted too in that sentence? Import, now import is a special technology word.

When we import something, we are moving the file from one app, or one location, into another app or location.

So we're taking the animation file and we are moving it into the video editing software.

Then you can improve it by adding media.

Video editing software is a programme that lets you edit and change video files.

This lesson will use a piece of video editing software, called OpenShot.

You could use other video editing software instead.

So if you don't have OpenShot, that's okay.

You might just need to check with your grownup about how your specific video editing software works.

It's best to use a video editing software that's on the same device that you used to record your animation project.

So if that's possible, try and get both of those pieces of software on the same device if you can.

Let's do a check here.

I want you to fill in the blanks.

So how this works is I'm going to read our three words in the bottom box.

Our three words are import, software, and save.

They're all technology words, and you are going to fill them into our sentences.

So I'm going to read the sentences through for you.

Here we go.

"Once you have created an animation, you can it to your device to watch or edit later.

You can your animations into video editing to edit them." Okay, time to go and fill in the blanks, and I'll be here when you get back.

Welcome back, well done for all of your effort on that check.

Let's look at the answers here.

So, "Once you have created an animation, you can save it to your device to watch or edit later.

You can import your animations into video editing software to edit them." Well done if you've got all of those right.

This is how you import your animation into the video editing software and save the project.

First you go to Import Files, select the file, and then to save the project, you're going to go to the Save button at the top, and here where it says File Name, you are going to enter a sensible name for your project.

And then you're going to press on Save.

Adding media to our animations makes them more interesting to the people watching them.

Remember when we say media, we're talking about sounds, text, pictures, and video.

You can add media to your animation using video editing software.

To add text to a video project, go to the Title, Menu at the top.

Once you're in Titles, you can select a style, and where it says "Line 1," this is where you add your title.

You can change some settings here too.

Once you've created your text, you can drag it from the project files into the timeline at the bottom, just like that.

And that will add text to your project.

You can add text to your video project.

In the OpenShot software, the text you add to your video is called a title.

You can add titles or animated titles from the Title menu at the top of the screen.

To add a picture, you go to Import Files at the top, you select your image, and press Open, and that will add it to the project files.

Then you can drag it down to the timeline at the bottom, make some space for it, drag it in.

You can add pictures to your video by importing them using the menu system.

Then you can drag and drop the files into your timeline.

OpenShot has emoji pictures that are ready to use.

To find them, look for the emojis label.

You can see the emojis label at the top of my screenshot here.

Jacob says, "I've made a mistake in my video editing software." Oh no, "Do I have to start again?" Jun says, "There are lots of ways to fix it.

You can change the order, undo or delete." So you don't have to worry if you've made a mistake.

Once the media clips are in your project, it's quite easy to drag them and move them around.

You can see in this clip here that the project files are being added to the timeline, and you can drag them to move them around.

Let's see how to delete media.

To delete a media clip, you right click on it, and press Remove from Project.

If you accidentally added media that you do not want, it can be deleted.

So to remove the media, you click on it in the project files.

Then you right click and select Remove from Project from the dropdown menu.

If you make a mistake, click on Edit, and then Undo at the top of the screen.

This will undo your work one step at a time.

And you can see we've got Edit at the very top, and then next to that is Undo.

So Undo is the first choice in that menu, and it will let you go back one step at a time.

All right, it's time for you to go and work on your project now.

Step number one says, use these ideas, or your own ideas, to finish your animation project.

You could add a picture that you've saved from the internet.

You could add music or sound effects, or you could add credits, titles, or other text.

When you have finished your animation project, I want you to share it with a partner.

What kinds of media did you add to your project? How has this made your project different from before? So you can use these talking points to chat with your partner about what you've made, and what you've added in the video editing software.

What kinds of media you've added to your project as well.

Off if you go to work on that.

Pause video here, and when you come back, we can do some feedback.

Welcome back, I hope you had lots of fun creating your animation projects in the video editing software.

Maybe you were adding some sounds or some text.

Let's see what Jun and Alex shared about their projects.

So Jun says, "I added sound effects, titles, and credits to my project." And Alex said, "Now that I've added music, my project is more interesting and enjoyable." And I've found often when I watch animation project, if it's got music in it generally makes it sound even more alive and exciting.

Well done for all of your hard work in that task.

Let's look at the second part of the lesson now.

The second part of the lesson is where you review your final film.

Sofia says, "I've added lots of sounds and pictures to my animation.

The more types of media I add, the better my project will be." Do you agree with Sofia? Why might adding lots of sounds and pictures not always make an animation better? Pause the video here and think about your answer.

If you add too many kinds of media, it can make your video messy and hard to follow.

Have a look at this picture of an animation project.

You can barely see the stop motion or the text because those emojis are covering it all up.

It's better to choose just some sounds, pictures, and text that help you tell your story clearly, so you can take those away and it will look much better.

Let's do a check here.

Projects are better with as many pieces of media as possible.

Pause the video here to think about your answer.

The answer is false.

Why? If you add too many different kinds of media, it can make your video messy and hard to follow.

Well done if you've got that one right.

Now, let's look at exporting.

To export press on the blue Export video button.

You make sure the name is correct and then you press on Export video.

There will be a loading bar while it processes this, and when it says a 100%, you know it's done.

Once you are happy with your final video, you will need to export it.

When you export a video, it is saved as a file that can be viewed on different devices, even by people who don't have the same video editing software.

What does review mean? Sofia says, "Review means to look at your work carefully." Alex says, "You can think about what's good, and what could be even better." When you finished adding media to your film, you can review the finished video project.

A review is a chance to look at how the media you added changed or improved your animation.

Let's do a check here.

Why might you review your work? Is it A, to see the effect of the new media, B, to share it with your friends, or C, to do it as homework? You can pause the video here to think about your answer.

Welcome back.

Let's look at the answer here.

Why might you review your work? The answer was A.

You'd review your work to see the effect of the new media.

Well done if you got that one right.

Okay, it's the final task now, and you are going to be reviewing your final film.

So the first step is to watch your finished project.

And I want you to think about these questions and answer them.

Which piece of media do you think had the biggest effect, and why? So you can pause the video here.

Off you go to watch and review your finished project.

Welcome back.

Let's look at the answers together.

Here is an example answer.

The question was, "Which piece of media do you think had the biggest effect and why?" "The text had the biggest effect.

The titles had the name of the story, and the other text Let people know what my animation was all about." Now, you might have chosen a different piece of media to write about and that's okay.

Let's look at the next part of this task.

For number two, it says, "Look at other people's completed projects.

Share your feedback with them.

Say what you liked and suggest a way it could be improved." Now remember, when you're giving feedback, you try to say something that you liked, as well as the thing that you think should improve.

'cause that's really well-rounded feedback, and that it makes people feel that proud of what they've made as well as looking for things to make better the next time.

You can pause the video here, go and give your feedback, and when we come back, I'll give you an example.

Welcome back.

Let's look at sharing feedback together.

So we have two examples of feedback here.

Jacob says, "I really like the exciting music that you added to your animation." Thank you Jacob, and Sofia says, "Next time, try adding titles so that people can see the name of your animation." So these two children have shown us example of saying something positive about someone's animation, and giving that bit of feedback so that they can make it even better the next time.

Well done on giving feedback as part of your final review.

You have worked really hard today in this lesson.

I'm going to summarise all the learning that we've done for this lesson.

All about adding media to an animation.

Media includes text, sound, videos, and pictures.

Media can be used to make animations more interesting.

Sounds and music are used to add excitement.

Text can be used to show information, or explain more about what's happening.

You can import a video into video editing software and use it to add media.

You can review a finished project to see the effect that media had.

Thank you for joining me in this lesson today.

I've really enjoyed working with you, and I hope to see you again soon.
