Hello everyone.
My name is Mrs. Jenkins.
I can't wait to learn with you in today's lesson.
Welcome to today's lesson: Shape and Line Tools, taken from the unit introduction to vector drawings.
By the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to recognise vector drawings and use shape and line tools.
In today's lesson, we have three key words.
These words will appear throughout the slide deck, so it's really important that we know what they mean before we start the lesson.
Those three words are vector, shape, and tool.
Vector is a type of computer image made up of shapes, lines, and curves.
A shape is a flat object like a square or circle that you can use to build a picture.
A tool is something you click to help you draw, move, or change parts of your picture.
So those three key words are vector, shape, and tool.
Keep your eyes out for them throughout today's lesson.
We have two learning cycles today.
Identify how vector drawings are made using shapes and use shape and line tools.
We're going to begin with identify how vector drawings are made using shapes.
Let's get started.
I want you to have a look at these images and have a think about what they have in common.
What did you think? All of the images are vector drawings.
They're drawings created on a computer using lines and shapes.
A vector drawing is made on the computer using lines and shapes and by putting the lines and shapes together to form a complete image.
Vector drawings are made using shapes.
So here we have some shapes and there they make up a picture.
Can you tell what the picture is made from? Good job.
There are squares, triangles, and rectangles making our house.
Each part is a shape like a digital building block.
True or false: vector drawings are hand drawn with a pencil on paper.
Have a go.
How did you get on? I asked you true or false: vector drawings are hand-drawn with a pencil on paper.
It is false.
They are made on a computer using lines and shapes.
Great job, everyone.
Here we have a comparison of vector and paper drawings.
So vector drawings are made using shapes.
They're created on a computer.
They're easy to edit and they have clean lines.
Paper drawings are drawn by hand, made with pencils or pens, hard to change, and can be smudged or messy.
So here we have a computer drawing of a pig and a paper drawing of a pig.
What can you spot as the differences? Vector drawings are not drawings you do by hand.
They're made with shape and line tools on a computer.
That's what makes them editable and easy to resize without losing quality.
Which sentence best describes a vector drawing? A, a picture drawn with a pencil on paper? B, a picture made using lines and shapes on a computer? Or C, a photo taken with a camera? Have a go.
How did you get on? I asked you which sentence best describes a vector drawing: A, a picture drawn with a pencil on paper? B, a picture made using lines and shapes on a computer? Or C, a photo taken with a camera? And it is B.
A vector drawing is a picture made using lines and shapes on a computer.
Great job, everyone.
For our task A, you are going to look at these pictures and for part A, I would like you to answer what makes this a vector drawing.
And for part B, I want you to look at what makes this not a vector drawing.
Have a go.
How did you get on? I asked you to first look at part A, what makes this a drawing and part B, what makes this not a vector drawing.
So part A, this is a vector drawing because it is made of shapes and lines on a computer.
And B, this is not a vector drawing because it was drawn by hand with a pencil.
So we can see that it's not straight.
It's got wonky lines.
The colour isn't even all the way through, all things that show it was done by pencil.
Going to move onto our part two now.
Our learning cycle two: use shape and line tools.
This is our drawing canvas.
It is going to show where your picture will go.
This video shows how to add a simple shape to the canvas.
Okay, so they have selected the shape tool, gone down to choose shapes, and chosen the shape they want to draw, and then they've clicked and dragged that shape out onto the canvas to create a simple shape.
This is part of the toolbar with the key tools needed to draw lines or create a shape.
So we have undo or redo.
So depending on which way the arrow is pointing.
We have select, we have line, and we have shape.
We'll be looking at all of these in the lesson.
Izzy asks us, "What does the select tool do?" Great question, Izzy.
We use this tool to click on and move shapes.
Shapes can also be resized or deleted.
And Izzy asks, "Well, what does the shape tool do?" We can use this to add shapes to the picture.
There are many different types of shapes that can be used.
We're not stuck to really straightforward shapes.
There are stars, there are arrows, there are speech bubbles, all sorts of different shapes that we can use.
Oh, and now she's asking us what does the line tool do? There are different types of line that can be used: straight, curve, and scribble.
This tool can be used to draw lines between shapes and add more detail.
Okay, which tool would you use to move a shape? A, line, B, shape, or C, select? Have a go.
How did you get on? I asked you which tool would you use to move a shape: A ,line, B, shape, or C, select? The answer is select.
We use the select tool to click on and then move a shape.
Okay, so the select tool has been chosen and which shape has been selected? How did you get on? Which shape has been selected? The rectangle has been selected.
It has a blue box around it.
It also has small squares around it, which can be used to resize or rotate the shape.
Okay, so if you click the select button, you can then resize the shapes, pulling on any of the corners of the shape or the sides of the shape where they have the blue squares.
Those small squares enable you to resize the shape in any direction.
So whether you want to make it wider, taller, or if you use the corner, it keeps it to scale.
How can I delete the rectangle? What do you think? What did you think? I asked you how can I delete the rectangle.
The rectangle can be deleted by selecting the shape and pressing the delete key on the keyboard.
How can the shapes be coloured? So we don't want to keep them the shape that they come in.
What did you think? I asked how can the shapes be coloured? You can select the shape and choose the fill tool to colour the shape.
You could also choose the line colour to add colour to the border lines.
The fill tool changes colour and the line tool adds borders.
There we've just got a closer image there of the fill tool and the line tool.
The fill tool looks like it's got a paint pot pouring out, the line tool is a pencil.
True or false: you can change the colour of a shape using the select tool.
Have a go.
How did you get on? I asked you true or false: you can change the colour of a shape using the select tool.
It's false.
You need to use the fill tool.
Great job, everyone.
Right, we're going to move on to task B.
I would like you to open Google Drawings, so we have our link here, and make a simple image.
For example, a rocket, a robot, or a house.
It must include three or more different shapes, use of the fill colour tool, and use of the line colour tool.
This is your chance to have a real explore of the programme.
Have a go.

So did you get on okay? I'd like you now to all share your creations with the rest of your class.
Great job, everyone.
You've worked really hard today.
We have come to the end of the lesson, so let's summarise what we have learned so far.
Vector drawings are made with shape and line tools on a computer.
This makes them easy to edit and resize without losing quality.
The drawing canvas is where shapes and lines can be added to create a picture.
You can add shapes with the add shape tool and you can move, resize, or delete shapes by clicking on them with the select tool.
Well done, everyone.
You've worked so hard today.
I hope you enjoyed it and I can't wait to learn with you again soon.
