Hello, my name is Mrs. Antrobus.

Welcome to computing.

I'm so glad you could join the lesson today.

Today we're going to be learning all about how the internet and communication can help us work together.

Welcome to today's lesson from the unit, Communication and the Internet.

Today's lesson is called Working Together, and by the end of this lesson, you'll be able to recognise how sharing information online can help people work together.

During today's lesson, we'll be using these key words.

Let's take a look at them now.

Cloud storage, cloud storage, saving files on a server that is on the internet.

Media, media, text, images, sound or video used to share ideas.

Online, online, connected to or available through the internet.

Today's lesson will be split into two sections.

The first part, recognise how files can be shared online.

The second part, describe how media is shared over the internet.

Let's get started.

Lucas and Jun are creating a presentation for their homework, but they don't live near each other.

How could they still work together? Pause the video for a moment and just give that some thought.

What do you think? How could Lucas and Jun work together even though they're not in the same place? Let's have a look on the next slide.

How could they still work together? Well, they could use video calls.

They could use email, sharing files online, posting letters or meeting in person.

Which do you think will be the fastest? Pause the video and think about that for a moment.

Well, posting letters isn't going to be very quick, is it? Did you think that, also email would be faster but sending and receiving and having to wait for a response can be time consuming, so actually, maybe using a video call will be good.

Which do you think will be best for documents that will have changes? Again, pause the video and just think about that for a moment.

Okay, what do you think? Well, if we look at those options, sharing files online would actually be the best option for making changes to documents as it'll be quick and easy.

Let's explore this further as we go through today's lesson.

What is cloud storage? Cloud storage is saving files on a server on the internet instead of one device, the files could be accessed from any computer that is connected to the internet.

When using cloud storage, files are stored online and can be open from any device, anywhere.

Why might using cloud storage help people to work together? Again, pause the video and just give that some thought.

Okay, what do you think? Well, cloud storage helps people work together because they can all open and work on the same file even if they're using different devices in different places.

It means everyone always sees the most up to date version.

Let's check your understanding, true or false? If a file is stored in the cloud, I can only open it on the same device it was created on.

Is that true or false? Pause the video and give that some thought.

Okay, how did you get on? Did you say true or false? Well, if you said false, you would be correct, but why is that? You can open it on any device with internet access, so whether you have created a document on a laptop using Microsoft PowerPoint for example, you can then access that on a tablet or you can access it on another desktop computer in a different location.

Lucas says, what can cloud storage be used for? Well, cloud storage allows you to access files including documents, presentations, photos and videos.

Files are updated live so everyone sees the same thing.

Lucas also asks, what are examples of files that can be kept in cloud storage? Word processing documents, spreadsheets, photo applications, slideshows and presentations and files and folders.

You can see a huge range of different files can be kept in cloud storage, and that's what makes it so good.

A group of children are working on a project.

How can they share their ideas with each other if they're not sitting together? Pause the video and give that question some thought.

So what did you come up with? How do you think the children can share their ideas with each other if they're not sitting together? Well, they could use chat or instant messaging to talk in real time.

Use comments to suggest changes or they could write directly on the document at the same time.

Lucas asks, what is Chat? Chat is a tool for real time messages inside a shared file.

It can sometimes be called instant messaging.

Two people could use instant messaging in a document to share ideas before they actually commit to writing them down in the document to get each other's opinions.

What are comments? Comments are notes added to a document to suggest ideas without changing the main text.

Why might someone use a comment instead of editing the slide like this one here? Jun, at 11:25 today said, "Change this to Spain has a Mediterranean climate." Think about why might someone use a comment instead of editing the slide, pause the video For a moment and give it some thought.

So what do you think? Why might someone use a comment Instead of editing the slide? Well by using a comment, you don't actually commit to editing the slide or making changes.

Another person who has shared access to the file can respond to your comment.

They might put a different suggestion, and by using comments, you can come to an agreement about what you want the slide to look like.

Let's check your understanding so far.

Which of these is something cloud storage can do? A, store a file online, B, print a photo or C, make a video call.

Pause the video and think about the question.

Okay, how did you get on? Well, if you said A, store a file online, that would be correct, so well done.

You've been listening to what we've been learning so far today.

Lucas asks, "What are comments, why might someone use a comment instead of editing the slide?" By using a comment, someone else can read your suggestion and choose to use the change or not.

Lucas also asks, "What can people share online while working together?" While people can share texts such as facts and titles, images, they can share links to other files, other websites, and they can share audio and video files too.

Let's have a look at task A together.

You're going to fill the gaps in this paragraph.

We'll read the paragraph and then you will choose from the four words at the bottom.

Cloud storage is saving files on a server on the instead of just one device.

Files stored online can be opened from, connected or online device anywhere.

A lets you send messages while working together online you can use to suggest changes.

Okay, you're going to fill the gaps using these words, comments, any, internet or chat, pause the video and we'll come back for some feedback in a moment.

Okay, how did you get on? Let's have a look where the words should go.

Cloud storage is saving files on the internet instead of just one device.

Files stored online can be open from any connected or online device anywhere.

A chat lets you send messages while working together online.

You can use comments to suggest changes to someone's work.

How did you get on? Did you put the correct words in the correct gap? If you did, well done.

If not, don't worry about that.

Just maybe go back on some of the learning that we've looked at today and have another go.

Now we're going to move on to the second part of our lesson.

Describe how media is shared over the internet.

Jun asks, "What do we mean by media?" Media is the type of content we share.

This can include text, so we mean words, images such as photos or drawings, sound, so sound clips, recordings, music, video clips or animations and links, so to other websites.

If you watch a video online or send a voice note to a friend, that is media being shared.

The media is stored on a server and sent through the internet to your device for you to watch or use.

So just think about the media that you use every day.

You may send voice note messages to your friends.

You may share videos.

You may stream videos online by watching your favourite shows and cartoons, but how does the media travel online? Jun asks, well media is broken into packets of data to be shared online in smaller parts, so you can see here this image is broken down into smaller packets at the computer and then it's is sent and reassembled back into its original image when it's received.

Let's check your understanding.

Which of these is an example of media, A, search bar, B, a command in a programme, C, a photo of a landmark, D, a tab in the browser.

Pause the video and give the question some thought.

Okay, how did you get on? Which one do you think is the correct answer? Well, if you said C, a photo of a landmark, you'll be correct.

A photo or an image is an example of media, well done.

Once media is turned into data packets, it can travel anywhere the internet reaches.

This could include a school computer, a tablet at home or even a friend's phone.

We use different online platforms to upload store and share media.

Some examples include online workspaces for word processing, presentations or spreadsheets, video sharing websites, photo sharing applications.

Think about some of the applications you use, the videos and photos that you share with your friends and your family.

Let's check your understanding, true or false, comments in a shared document change the actual content of the file.

Is that true or false? Pause the video and think about that statement.

Okay, how did you get on? Did you say false? Well, if you did, that would be correct.

Let's look why.

Comments just suggest changes.

They don't edit the document.

They sit in the document and allow the people who are sharing the document to add comments and read comments, but they don't change what is on the actual page or slide.

If you're uploading a photo to a shared slide deck, these are the steps and the processes that would take place.

One, the photo is selected for uploading to the shared slide, two, the photo is split into packets for transmission.

Remember when we looked at the image of the dog earlier? Three, the data packets are sent to the shared slide server.

Four, the packets are reassembled and the photo is added to the shared slide.

Five, the updated page with the new photo in it is split into packets for transmission to other users.

Six, the data packets are sent to every member's device.

Seven, the page displayed on each user's computer is updated so everyone sees the same thing, and all of that happens so quickly that a user wouldn't really notice the steps being made.

Let's have a look at task B.

Create a fact file about a country on a slide deck.

You're going to use a web browser to research facts about a particular country.

Then you're going to add some text and some images.

You're going to share your slide deck with another pupil.

Can you add comments to help each other improve the presentation? Okay, pause the video and have a go at this task.

How did you get on with the task? Well done for having a go.

I hope you were able to find lots of really interesting information and some great images.

How did it go when you tried to share your information or share your slide deck with another pupil? Were you able to use the comments features to help each other improve the presentation? Let's have a look at an example.

Here you can see a fact file on Spain.

The person who's created the fact file has found there is a capital city in Spain called Madrid, and the money or the currency they use are euros.

They were also able to find three bullet pointed facts here.

Taking afternoon siestas is deeply important to Spanish culture.

These short naps typically last anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours.

That sounds great to me.

Spain's national dish is paella.

Have you ever tried paella? Spanish is a second most spoken language in the world.

That's a really good example with some really interesting facts.

How does yours compare? Now, we've reached the end of our lesson today.

Well done, you've done a fantastic job.

Let's summarise what we've learned together.

Cloud storage is saving files on a server on the internet instead of one device, the files can be accessed from any suitable device connected to the internet.

Cloud storage allows you to store and access documents, presentations, photos and videos.

Files are updated live, so everyone sees the same version.

We use different online platforms to upload, store and share media.

This includes online workspaces, video sharing websites, and photo sharing applications.

Thank you for taking part in today's lesson.

I hope you've enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing you next time.
