Hello, my name is Mrs. Holborow, and welcome to Computing.
I'm so pleased you've decided to join me for the lesson today.
In today's lesson, you're going to be exploring the uses of AI technology and some of the impacts of using AI technology in the real world.
Welcome to today's lesson from the unit Using Data Science and AI Tools Effectively and Safely.
This lesson is called AI In Our World Today, and by the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to describe the uses of AI and explain the impacts of the technology.
Shall we make a start? We will be exploring these key words throughout today's lesson.
Let's take a look at them together now.
System.
System, a set of connected parts that work together as a whole to perform a function or achieve a goal.
Application.
Application, putting something to use, or a thing that is being used for a specific purpose.
Social.
Social, how people interact, live, and communicate with one another in groups or communities.
Ethical.
Ethical, doing what is right, fair, and morally good.
Look out for these key words throughout today's lesson.
Today's lesson is split into two parts.
We'll start by describing uses of AI technology, and then we'll move on to explain impacts of using AI technology.
Let's make a start by describing uses of AI technology.
Artificial intelligence or AI technology is about building computer systems that can perform tasks and generate decisions, adjusting their output based on data, which is sometimes called learning or by following rules.
There are many different uses of AI technology, which are designed to be useful in different ways.
You are likely to have already used more AI technology than you realise.
Can you think of any AI technology that you have used? Maybe pause the video whilst you have a think.
AI technology is used in lots of ways in everyday life.
Sofia says, "AI technology is used in common tools like voice assistants, search engines, and recommendation systems." AI tools are becoming more powerful and flexible with new applications being invented every day.
Sofia says, "AI technology is used in many industries." Some examples of this include finance and banking, healthcare and medical research, and manufacturing.
The finance and banking industry uses AI technology in a number of ways.
Let's have a look at some of them now.
They use it in fraud detection systems. So, AI technology is used to identify unusual transactions in real time.
AI technology is also used to help with credit scoring, investment advice, and financial forecasting.
So, if you apply for a loan or a mortgage, AI technology might be used to detect whether you can afford those repayments.
Medical professionals use AI technology to support their work and help with research.
Doctors use AI technology to help them diagnose diseases, use medical imaging analysis, and patient data.
Researchers use AI technology to analyse vast amounts of data to support the development of new drugs and treatments.
In manufacturing, AI technology is used to help automate and speed up production processes.
Manufacturing robots are designed to use AI technology to complete tasks like welding, packaging, assembly, and quality control.
Engineers use AI technology in predictive maintenance to forecast equipment failures before they actually occur.
AI technology has so many uses because it can analyse data, identify patterns, and suggest actions or decisions more quickly than humans.
AI technology can be used to handle large amounts of data and solve problems that may be too complex or time-consuming for people.
This allows businesses and services to work more efficiently and accurately.
The number of ways AI technology can be used is growing every day.
You may have seen lots of reports about AI in the news or on your social media posts, and there's normally something new about AI every single day.
New AI tools are constantly being developed as a result of new scientific research.
AI technology is constantly evolving and is being used by humans to solve new problems. Jacob says, "Wow! AI systems must be really smart." Sofia says, "AI systems may seem smart, but remember that all AI systems are developed by humans who have control over their design." Jacob has a question, "But do AI systems think?" What do you think about this question? Maybe pause the video whilst you have a think.
Sofia says, "AI systems do not think or make decisions like humans." It's very easy to add phrases to AI technology that makes them sound like humans, so think, learn, those kind of things, which make us think that these AI tools actually have some human element to them.
AI systems follow programmed rules or improve performance based on data, but they do not think or have emotions like humans.
There are countless other applications of AI technology that we haven't covered so far in this lesson.
For example, AI chatbot applications are used in the retail industry to provide customer service or support.
AI technology is essential in transportation systems. Sofia says, "Self-driving cars use AI systems to detect objects, react to situations, and plan routes." AI technology powers traffic prediction and route optimization in GPS and ride-sharing applications.
AI systems are used in environmental monitoring to track changes in the natural world and predict future events.
AI technology is used to analyse satellite images and detect changes in forecasts, oceans and ice caps.
Okay, time to check your understanding.
I have a question for you.
AI technology is A, fully evolved, and has solved all known problems, B, constantly being developed to solve new problems, or C, fully evolved and solving new problems. Pause the video whilst you think about your answer.
Did you select B? Well done.
Remember, AI technology is constantly evolving and is being developed to solve new problems, so AI being developed today might be able to solve problems that we don't even know about yet.
I have a true or false statement for you now.
AI technology can analyse data, recognise patterns, and suggest actions or decisions more quickly than humans.
Is this true or false? Pause the video whilst you have a think.
That's right, the statement is true.
Computing power means that often these systems can process huge amounts of data, which can be processed more quickly than by humans.
Okay, we're moving on to our first task of today's lesson.
In your own words, I'd like you to describe two or three uses of AI technology.
Remember, you can look back through the slide deck to support with your answer, or you may even want to do your own research.
Pause the video here whilst you complete the activity.
How did you get on? Did you manage to describe two or three uses of AI technology? Well done.
Let's have a look at a sample answer together.
AI technology is used by doctors to help diagnose diseases more accurately and quickly.
For example, doctors use AI systems to analyse medical images to help them diagnose and treat diseases.
In manufacturing, engineers use AI technology to control robots to complete tasks like welding, packaging, assembly, and quality control.
AI technology is used in the finance industry to help banks detect and prevent fraud by identifying unusual transactions in real time.
Did you have some similar responses in your answer? Remember, you could have used some different examples and that's absolutely fine.
Okay, we're now moving on to the second part of today's lesson where we're going to explain the impacts of using AI technology.
Alex says, "AI technology must have a lot of positive impacts, Sofia." Sofia says, "You're right, Alex, but it can also have some negative impacts." Can you think of any positive or negative impacts of using AI technology? Perhaps pause the video here whilst you have a think.
Sofia says, "There are many positive impacts of using AI technology." Some examples include improving efficiency and productivity, helping to solve complex challenges, and making services more accessible.
AI technology can improve efficiency and productivity in manufacturing by automating repetitive tasks.
This can lead to more affordable products for customers and higher profit for businesses.
Governments and scientists can use AI systems to help them make data-informed decisions about climate change.
This can lead to more accurate weather predictions and an improved understanding of how to respond to a changing climate.
AI technology can make services more accessible.
AI tools such as translators, speech recognition, and assistive technologies can support people with additional needs and help improve communication globally.
Time to check your understanding.
I have a true or false statement for you.
AI tools such as speech recognition can support people with additional needs and help improve communication.
Is this statement true or false? Pause the video whilst you have a think.
Did you select true? Well done.
Alex says, "There are a number of ways AI technology can have negative impacts." Some examples include reduced or changed employment opportunities, biassed systems that favour certain groups, and harmful use of AI technology.
AI technology can have social and ethical implications for people in society.
The social implications of AI technology can affect individuals, communities, and the way we live together.
Using AI technology can also raise ethical questions about what is right, what is fair, and what is morally good.
AI systems can reduce or change employment opportunities in many different industries.
Some workers might lose their jobs or need to learn new skills so that they can work with AI technology.
This could lead to financial stress and reduced opportunities within communities.
AI systems can be biassed, unfair, and unethical if the system is trained on biassed data.
This can negatively impact people.
For example, if facial recognition or hiring systems are biassed and favour certain groups over others.
Sam has a question.
"What does biassed mean?" Do you know the answer to this question? Maybe pause the video whilst you have a think.
Sofia says, "Biassed means showing unfair preference to one person or group over another." A biassed test might be easier for one group of students than another.
A biassed AI system could choose more men than women for jobs if it was trained on unfair data.
Misusing AI technology can lead to harmful consequences and negative impacts on society.
For example, deep fakes or misinformation can influence public opinion, manipulate people, or cause harm to people's reputations.
Okay, another true or false statement for you here.
AI technologies trained on biassed data are unlikely to produce biassed outcomes.
Is this statement true or false? Pause the video whilst you have a think.
That's right, it's false.
AI systems can be biassed, unfair, and unethical if the system is trained on biassed data.
As with other forms of technology, care must be taken to ensure that AI systems are used responsibly and safely.
As AI technology continues to develop, it's important to hold developers responsible for making AI tools as safe and as fair as possible.
I have a question for you.
AI technology can A, have both positive and negative impacts on society, B, only have positive impact on society, or C, only have a negative impact on society.
Pause the video whilst you have a think.
That's right.
I knew you'd get this one right.
AI technology can have both positive and negative impacts on society.
Okay, we're moving on to our next task of today's lesson, Task B.
There's two parts to this task.
For part one, in your own words, explain two possible positive impacts of using AI technology.
And then for part two, in your own words, explain two possible negative impacts of using AI technology.
Pause the video here whilst you complete the task.
How did you get on? Did you manage to explain some possible positive and negative impacts of using AI technology? Well done.
Let's have a look at a sample answer together.
So for part one, we're looking at the possible positive impacts.
AI technology can be used to improve efficiency and productivity in manufacturing by automating repetitive tasks.
This can lead to more affordable products for customers and higher profits for businesses.
Governments and scientists can use AI systems to help make data-informed decisions about climate change.
This can lead to more accurate weather predictions and an improved understanding of how to respond to a changing climate.
For part two, you are asked to look at two possible negative impacts.
AI systems may reduce or change employment opportunities in many different industries.
This impacts workers as they might lose their jobs or need to learn new skills so they can work with AI technology.
This could lead to financial stress and reduced opportunities within communities if training is not available.
AI systems can be biassed, unfair, and unethical if the system is trained on biassed data.
This could negatively impact people.
For example, if facial recognition or hiring systems are biassed and favour certain groups over others.
Remember, if you need to pause the video to revisit your answer or add any extra detail, you can do that now.
Okay, we've come to the end of today's lesson, AI In Our World Today, and you've done a fantastic job, so well done.
Let's summarise what we've learned during this lesson.
AI technology can be used for a variety of purposes.
AI systems do not think or make decisions like humans.
AI technology may affect society in both positive and negative ways.
New AI tools are constantly being developed as a result of ongoing scientific research and discoveries.
I hope you've enjoyed today's lesson, and I hope you'll join me again soon.
Bye.
