Hello, my name is Ms. Holborow, and welcome to Computing.

I'm so pleased you've decided to join me for the lesson today.

In today's lesson, you'll be exploring artificial intelligence, what is meant by the term "artificial intelligence", and what are the common uses of AI? Welcome to today's lesson from the unit, "Data science: AI and machine learning." This lesson is called "Introduction to AI." And by the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to explain what artificial intelligence is, and identify some common uses in the real world.

Shall we make a start? We will be exploring these keywords throughout today's lesson: Intelligence, intelligence: the ability to learn and adapt to new situations.

Application, application: putting something to use, or a thing that is being used for a specific purpose.

Look out for these key words throughout today's lesson.

Today's lesson is broken down into two parts.

We'll start by defining what is meant by artificial intelligence, and then we'll move on to identify common applications of AI.

Let's make a start by defining what is meant by artificial intelligence.

What does it mean to be intelligent? Maybe pause the video whilst you have a think, or if you can, discuss it with someone else.

Lucas thinks intelligence means how clever you are.

Izzy says, "It's the ability to learn and adapt to new situations." Jun thinks it's being emotionally intelligent.

I think all of these are correct, don't you? Did you have some similar responses? So what is meant by the term "artificial intelligence"? Again, maybe pause the video and have a discussion if you can.

Lucas thinks artificial intelligence is when a machine behaves like a human.

Izzy says, "It's when a machine can make decisions." Jun thinks it's when a machine can solve problems. Did you have some similar responses? Examples of human intelligence or thinking include problem solving, recognising patterns, and decision making.

Let's ask this question again.

Have your responses changed? What is artificial intelligence? Lucas thinks maybe it's a robot that thinks and controls itself.

Izzy says, "Maybe smart speakers and chatbots." Jun says, "The algorithms which control what we see on social media." Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a field of computer science that relies on data in order to problem solve.

AI is a continually evolving field.

AI is powerful technology that can be used to build useful tools.

Lucas says, "So, AI is not about creating super-thinking robots that are going to take over the world." Izzy says, "That's right, Lucas! AI is a set of tools and techniques that we can use to solve complex problems using computers." Jun has a good question though, "But do AI systems think?" Izzy says, "AI systems do not think or make decisions like humans." AI systems follow programmed rules to improve performance based on data, but they do not think or have emotions like humans.

This is sometimes difficult, because when people are talking about AI applications, they often use words that we relate to humans, things like think, feel, make decisions, so sometimes it can get a bit blurred.

Okay, time to check your understanding.

I have a true or false statement for you.

"AI applications can think." Is this statement true or false? Pause the video whilst you have a think.

Did you select false? Well done.

AI systems follow programmed rules or improve performance based on data.

They do not think or have emotions like humans.

Artificial intelligence, or AI technology, is about building computer systems that can perform tasks and generate decisions, adjusting their output based on data.

This is sometimes called learning or by following rules.

Okay, time to check your understanding again.

This time I'd like you to fill in the gaps to complete the sentence.

So the sentence is, "AI systems follow programmed, blank, or improved performance based on, blank, but they do not, blank, or have, blank, like humans." And the words provided are: emotions, data, rules, and think.

Pause the video whilst you complete the task.

Did you manage to fill in the gaps correctly? Well done.

Let's have a look at the answer together.

"AI systems follow programmed rules or improve performance based on data, but they do not think or have emotions like humans." Did you get all of those correct? Well done.

Okay, we are moving on to our first task of today's lesson, task A.

In your own words, I'd like you to define what is meant by artificial intelligence.

Pause the video whilst you have a think about your answer and write a response.

How did you get on? Did you manage to come up with your own definition of artificial intelligence? Well done.

Let's have a look at a sample answer together.

Remember, this is only a sample answer, so if your definition is different, that's absolutely okay, but just try and look at the key points that are provided in the answer.

"Computer systems that can perform tasks and generate decisions, adjusting their output based on data or by following rules." "AI applications appear to mimic intelligent behaviour." "AI applications do not think.

AI applications are built to carry out tasks in a way that appears to be intelligent." Remember, if you'd like to pause the video here and add any extra detail or corrections to your answer, you can do that now.

Okay, we are moving on to the second part of today's lesson where we're going to identify common applications of AI.

There are many different uses of AI technology, which are designed to be useful in different ways.

You are likely to have already used more AI technology than you realise.

Izzy says, "Can you think of any AI technology you have used?" Maybe pause the video whilst you have a quick think.

AI technology is used in lots of ways in everyday life.

Jun says, "AI technology is used in common tools like voice assistance, search engines, and recommendation systems." AI tools are becoming more powerful and flexible with new applications being invented every day.

Izzy says, "AI technology is used in many industries." Some examples include in finance and banking, in healthcare and medical research, and in manufacturing.

The finance and banking industry uses AI technology in a number of ways.

Fraud detection systems use AI technology to identify unusual transactions in real time.

So for example, has a transaction been made at an unusual time or an unusual location? AI technology is also used to help with credit scoring, investment advice, and financial forecasting.

Medical professionals use AI technology to support their work and help with research.

Doctors use AI technology to help them diagnose diseases, using medical imaging analysis and patient data.

Researchers use AI technology to analyse vast amounts of data to support development of new drugs and treatments.

Okay, time to check your understanding.

I have a question for you.

In healthcare, which of the following is likely to be a common use of AI? Is it A: printing appointment cards, B: filing patient medical records in cabinets, or C: detecting diseases from medical images? Pause the video whilst you think about your answer? Did you select C? Well done.

Detecting diseases from medical images is a common use of AI in healthcare.

In manufacturing, AI technology is used to help automate and speed up production processes.

Manufacturing robots are designed to use AI technology to complete tasks like welding, packaging, assembly, and quality control.

Engineers use AI technology in predictive maintenance to forecast equipment failures before they occur.

Using AI in manufacturing helps reduce production costs which can benefit customers by reducing the overall price of products.

AI has so many uses because it can analyse data, identify patterns, and suggest actions or decisions more quickly than humans.

AI technology can be used to handle large amounts of data and solve problems that might be too complex or time-consuming for people.

This allows businesses and services to work more efficiently and accurately.

The number of ways AI technology can be used is growing every day.

New AI tools are constantly being developed as a result of new scientific research.

AI technology is constantly evolving and being used by humans to solve new problems. So the AI that is being developed today is probably being designed to solve problems that we might not even know about yet.

Jun says, "Wow, AI systems must be really smart." Do you agree with this statement? Maybe pause the video and have a think.

Izzy doesn't agree.

Izzy says, "AI systems may seem smart, but remember that all AI systems have been developed by humans who have control over their design." There are countless other applications of AI technology.

For example, AI chatbot applications are used in the retail industry to provide customer service and support.

AI technology is essential in transportation systems. Self-driving cars use AI systems to detect objects, react to situations, and plan routes.

AI technology powers traffic prediction and route optimization in GPS and ride-sharing applications.

AI systems are used in environmental monitoring to track changes in the natural world and predict future events.

AI technology is used to analyse satellite images and detect changes in forests, oceans, and ice caps.

Okay, time to check your understanding.

I have a question for you.

AI technology is, A: fully evolved and has solved all known problems, B: constantly being developed to solve new problems, or C: fully evolved and solving new problems. Pause the video whilst you think about your answer.

Did you select B? Well done.

Remember, AI technology is constantly being developed to solve new problems. Okay, we are moving on to our second task of today's lesson, task B, and you've done a fantastic job to get this far, so, well done.

In your own words, I'd like you to describe two or three common applications of AI technology.

Pause the video whilst you have a go at the task.

How did you get on with the task? Did you manage to describe two or three common applications of AI technology? Well done.

Let's have a look at a sample answer together.

Remember, this sample answer might include common applications you haven't included in your answer, but that's absolutely fine.

AI technology is used by doctors to help diagnose diseases more accurately and quickly.

For example, doctors use AI systems to analyse medical images to help them diagnose and treat diseases.

In manufacturing, engineers use AI technology to control robots to complete tasks like welding, packaging, assembly, and quality control.

AI technology is used in the finance industry to help banks detect and prevent fraud by identifying unusual transactions in real time.

Remember, if you'd like to pause the video here and add any detail to your answer, you can do that now.

Okay, we've come to the end of today's lesson, "Introduction to AI," and you've done a fantastic job, so, well done.

Let's summarise what we've learned together in this lesson.

AI technology allows machines to think and act in ways that seem intelligent, often by using data to improve over time.

AI technology now powers many everyday activities.

Common applications of AI technology include voice assistance, recommendation systems, chatbots, and fraud detection systems. I hope you've enjoyed the lesson today, and I hope you'll join me again soon, bye.
