Hi, everyone, I'm Mrs. Courts, and I'm very pleased to join you for today's lesson on finishing techniques for hand puppets.

This is part of the Templates in textiles: hand puppets unit.

Our lesson outcome for today is: I can add applique details to my hand puppet.

We have four new keywords for today's lesson.

I'll say them first and then you repeat them after me.

Are you listening really carefully? Brilliant.

Material.

Material.

Brilliant.

A material is what an object is made from.

Applique.

Applique.

Super.

Applique is glueing or sewing fabric shapes or designs onto another fabric.

Detail.

Detail.

Super.

A detail is a small feature that adds interest.

And our final words: joining techniques.

Joining techniques.

Super.

Joining techniques are ways to join two things together correctly.

Well done, everyone.

In our lesson today, "Finishing techniques," we have got two parts, two learning cycles.

Our first part is adding finishing touches.

This is Alex's design, and you will have completed a design as you went through the process of designing your puppet.

Well, Alex's design and his partly made hand puppet, can you see that? And which has been sewn together and then turned inside out.

So as you can see, Alex's design, and then his hand puppet, which has been turned inside out.

Sofia says, "What does Alex need to add to his hand puppet to finish it?" I wonder.

Have a little look at Alex's design.

Can you spot anything that's missing? Well, designers finish their designs by adding detail.

Can you say that word, detail? Brilliant.

Well, details are small features that add interest.

Well, in terms of puppets, details make puppets more recognisable.

For example, puppets of monsters, people, or animals will all look different and have different details.

Can you spot any details which have been added to these hand puppets? Have a little look.

There's the crab, there's the penguin, and a monster.

What do you think has been added to them to make them all look different, add detail? So can you spot any details which have been added to these hand puppets? Yes, there are eyes, there's ears, there's a beak for the penguin, and there's teeth for the monster.

Lots of detail has been added.

To add details to felt hand puppets, a designer must use a process called applique.

Can you say applique? Well done.

Sofia says, "Applique is a way of glueing or sewing fabric shapes or designs onto another fabric.

And it can be used to create different effects and to add detail." Well done, Sofia.

Well, both of these puppets have felt pieces that have been joined to add detail.

This technique is called applique.

Can you see different pieces of felt that have been added to the crab? Or can you see any that have been added to the penguin? Well done, everyone.

We are ready for our check for understanding now.

Hope you're sitting comfortably.

Well done.

So, which of these words means a way to decorate fabric by adding other pieces of fabric? Is it A, paint; B, colour; or C, applique? Pause the video now and Have a little think.

Welcome back.

So which one, which of these words means a way to decorate fabric by adding other pieces of fabric? That's right, it's applique.

Well done.

This is Alex's finished hand puppet.

To make his hand puppet, Alex went through a few different steps.

First, Alex had another look at his design and thought about the colours and the materials that he could use to create the different effects.

You can look at your design and think about your colours and your materials too.

I wonder what Alex is going to use for the ears.

I wonder what he'll use for the eyes or the nose.

Let's have a little think.

Well, designers often change their ideas as they are designing, making, or finishing their products.

"I need to think about which material to use for my nose and mouth.

I really cannot decide," said Alex.

We are ready for our next check for understanding now.

Hope you are listening really carefully.

So, true or false? Designers make sure they follow their design ideas, not changing anything as they make their product.

Is that true or false? Pause the video now and have a little think.

Welcome back.

So designers make sure they follow their design ideas, not changing anything as they make their product is false.

Well done, everyone.

Why? Why is it false? That's right, designers often change their ideas as they're designing, making, or finishing their product.

Alex then chose the materials that he was going to use for his hand puppet.

He could choose from some fabric paint, different fabrics, some wobbly eyes, some buttons, sequins, some string, ribbon, or thread.

He could also choose from these materials: some feathers, pom poms, felt, cotton wool, pipe cleaners, or some sewing lines, where he'd need a needle and thread.

Here are some resources.

He might use some fabric crayons, some felt pens, a permanent marker pen, paint, or chalk.

There's such a range of things that you can add to your hand puppet to add detail.

So then Alex chose his colours and his materials.

He made a little note around the side of his design idea.

He chose grey felt, white felt or cotton wool, pink felt and wobbly eyes.

Well, they're brilliant ideas, Alex, that you might use on your final puppet.

However, remember, you can change your mind as you finish your puppet and you're adding the detail.

Alex hasn't chosen the material yet though for his nose or his mouth.

He decided he'd do that as he finishes his final puppet.

We're ready for our first task now, Task A.

So with your design in front of you, talk to your friend about how you are going to finish off your hand puppet.

You might choose to write down around or next to your design idea what you'll use.

Have a little think.

Pause the video now and return when you've completed Task A.

Welcome back.

Well, I hope you've had lots of fun talking to your friend about how you'll finish off your puppet.

Well, Alex spoke to his friends and decided that the mouth could be made using a black permanent pen and the nose from a small pink pom pom.

They're great ideas, Alex, and great imagination and discussion with your friends.

Well done, everyone.

We're ready for our next learning cycle now, finishing puppets.

To join the different fabrics and materials to a felt hand puppet, we need to think very carefully about the joining techniques.

That's another one of our keywords, joining techniques.

Can you say that? Joining techniques.

Well done.

Well, Andeep says, "Joining techniques are ways to join two things together correctly." We are ready for our next check for understanding now.

Are you ready? Super.

So, true or false? Joining techniques are ways to take things apart.

True or false? Pause the video now and have a little think.

Welcome back.

So, true or false? Joining techniques are ways to take things apart is false.

Well done.

Why? That's right, joining techniques are ways to join two things together correctly.

Well done, everyone.

These are different ways you might join fabric.

You might use some runny glue, some PVA glue.

Stapler to use staples.

Stitches using some thread and a needle.

Safety pins.

Pins.

Or double-sided tape.

Izzy says, "Some joining techniques work better than others." That is very true, Izzy.

Safety pins, pins, and double-sided tape, well, they're not as easy to use and some of them are not as good.

So these joining techniques work, but they often do not hold the fabric for so long, or they involve sharp metal pieces that are fiddly to use.

So you might hurt your fingers as well.

PVA glue is usually a good way to join fabric and other materials together.

It can be a little bit messy, so therefore you only need a very small amount, just a little dot.

And remember, you can always add more glue, but it's harder to remove it if you put too much on.

A stapler can be a good way to join fabric and other materials together too.

It uses metal staples.

It can be dangerous, so be careful with your fingers and keep your fingers away.

So only the fabric goes between to be able to staple down.

Staples are good to hold small pieces of fabric together, but they can look a bit untidy if you've got lots and lots of staples.

Sewing is a great way to join pieces of fabric, but it doesn't work very well for attaching other materials like paper and card and wobbly eyes.

It can be hard to sew through multiple pieces and lots of pieces of fabric.

So maybe have a think about where you'll use it.

So we are ready for our next check for understanding now.

So which of these are good ways to join fabric and materials to your puppet? Glue, stitches, or pins? Pause the video now and have a little think.

Welcome back.

So which of these are good ways to join fabric and materials to your puppet? That's right.

Glue, PVA runny glue, and stitches.

Remember what we said though, be really careful, only a little bit of glue.

You can always add to it.

Too much, it'll be hard to remove the extra.

And stitches are really good, but just think about where you're using them because it can be hard to sew through lots of different layers of fabric.

Well done, everyone.

We're ready for Task B now.

And using your chosen joining technique and adding extra detail and applique, I'd like you to finish off your hand puppet.

You might choose to use glue.

Remember, tiny little bit of glue, a little dot of glue.

You can always add to it.

It's harder to remove it after.

You might use staples, but just be careful with your fingers.

And stitches.

You might need to think about if you can sew through different layers of fabric or felt.

Safety pins and pins, although these tend to be a bit more dangerous and you've got to be careful with your fingers.

And double-sided tape.

So pause the video now.

Have lots of fun completing your hand puppet, adding all the extra detail and using different joining techniques.

And join me when you finish the task.

Welcome back.

Hope you've had lots of fun adding all that extra detail.

They look brilliant.

Well done, everyone.

Well, Alex had a lot of fun adding the detail to his rabbit hand puppet, and he was very pleased with the finished product.

He decided to use a pink pom pom for the rabbit's nose, and he changed his mind and used a thick weaving fabric for his ears.

And this fabric was very easy to cut and very easy to shape.

He then added some teeth and used white paper for the mouth and teeth using a black pen to add the outline.

Alex changed his finished hand puppet and made decisions as he added his detail, and that's absolutely fine.

Brilliant hand puppet, Alex.

Well done for all your hard work, and well done to everyone else for all of your hard work too.

Did you change your finished design, and why did you change your ideas? Was it because you noticed something didn't work? You couldn't add something in the right way? You couldn't get it to stay on your hand puppet? Why did you change any ideas? We've reached the end of our lesson for today, and I hope you've had lots of fun finishing off your hand puppets.

They look brilliant.

Well done.

I wonder if you can give me a thumbs up if you feel you've met these learning points along the way today.

Are you ready? Super.

So applique is a way to decorate fabric by adding other pieces of fabric.

Brilliant.

Well done.

Applique can be added using stitching effects, glue, or staples.

Excellent.

There are different ways to join materials together, and some are more effective than others.

Brilliant.

And finally, finishing techniques are a way to add detail and features to hand puppets so that users can tell what the puppet is.

Brilliant.

Well, thank you again for your hard work today, and your puppets are wonderful.

See you soon.

Bye.
