Hi, everyone, I'm Mrs. Courts, and I'm very pleased to join you for today's lesson to plan and make fabric templates.
This is part of the Templates in Textiles: Hand Puppets unit.
In our lesson today, our outcome is: I can make fabric templates to create a hand puppet.
We have three new keywords for today's lesson.
I'll say them first, and then you repeat them after me.
Brilliant.
Template, template.
Super.
A template is a shape or pattern used to help cut something to the right size.
Accurate, accurate.
Super.
If something's accurate, it's being very exact with no mistakes.
And join, join.
Join means to connect two pieces or more together.
Well done, everyone, great listening.
In our lesson today, of planning and making fabric templates, we have two learning cycles.
That's two parts to our lesson.
Our first is choosing and preparing a template.
To create a puppet, you have already written a design specification and chosen the best design, the material, probably chosen felt, and a joining technique.
Which ones do you choose? Now you need to make a template.
Jun says, "What is a template?" That's a good question, Jun.
Wonder if we can remember.
Well, a template is a pattern or shape used to help cut things to the right size.
Have you ever drawn around your hand, and you get your hand on paper and then you draw around it with a pencil or a pen? Well, when you've done that, if so, you have drawn a template, a template of your hand.
These are templates.
Wonder, if you have a quick look, can you guess what they might be templates of? Have a quick look, what do you think? That's right, a leaf, well done.
A person.
Did you get the last one? Brilliant, that's an owl.
Well done.
So the outside of a shape.
Now, the owl, you could actually cut the eyes, cut around, and then you could use it as a mask.
However, the others only have the outline, the outside, the template around the outside of it.
A designer makes a template to help them to cut out a material.
So, for example, for the toy owl, the owl template is used.
And then, once the pieces of material are cut, then they can be put together to make the owl toy.
Well done.
We are ready for our first Check for Understanding now.
And this is a true or false question.
A template is a shape or pattern that's used to help cut something to the right size.
Is that true or false? Pause the video now and have a little think.
Welcome back.
So true or false: a template's a shape or pattern used to help to cut something to the right size? Is true.
Well done, everyone.
Why is it true? Why? That's right.
A template is a pattern or shape used to help cut things to the right size.
This helps designers to make things.
To choose a template for your design, have a look back to your final design.
You'll recognise these three shapes.
We've got our triangles.
You can draw it with your finger.
Three sides, one, two, three, well done.
Our square, do you remember how many sides? That's right, four sides.
One, two, three, four.
And the other shape has got a rounded top.
Do you remember a rounded top? And then it's got the flat base to it.
So which shape outline did you choose for your final design? Have a little think.
Well, to make a hand puppet, we'll be using scissors to cut the felt.
And, scissors, they're a tool.
We need to remember to hold them carefully, to sit down when we're cutting, and only cut paper, card, or materials for your project with scissors.
You'll notice that I've put materials there because today we're going to be cutting some felt or other fabric.
Alex looked at his final design, and he found the correct template.
And then he cut it out using a pair of scissors.
"Oh no! I forgot to put the ears on my template.
"Oh no, should I start again?" said Alex.
What do you think? He's forgotten to put the ears on his template.
Should he start again? Thumbs up for yes or thumbs down for no.
Right, well, Sam said it's a thumbs down.
It's a no.
"Don't worry about it.
"The ears are a detail that can be added later.
"The template is just the basic outline of the puppet." Don't worry about the ears, Alex.
We'll do it later.
We are ready for our next Check for Understanding now.
Hope you were listening.
So which is the best thing to use to cut out the template: scissors, ruler, or glue? A, B, or C? Pause the video now and have a little think.
Welcome back.
So which is the best thing to use to cut out the template? It is, A, scissors, well done.
We are ready for our first task now, Task A.
And I'd like you to cut out the shape for your outline.
Remember to look at your worksheet, find your chosen design, check you've got the right shape outline and it matches that design.
And then I'd like you to cut it out.
And when you've done that, I'd like you to then, using a black felt-tip pen or a pencil, complete the challenge, which is to mark on your sewing holes onto that card or paper template.
Pause the video now, and I'll see you in a few minutes.
Welcome back.
So did you manage to find the right shape outline? Brilliant.
Did you manage to cut it out? Wonderful.
And did you manage to add your sewing holes using a black pen or a pencil to your template? Brilliant work, today.
Well done, everyone.
Well, Alex used scissors to cut around his template, and then he used a pencil to practise adding his sewing holes.
Well done, Alex.
Great work today.
We are now ready for our second learning cycle, the second part of our lesson, and that's fixing a template.
"Now that I've chosen my template and cut it out, "what do I do next?" said Andeep.
That's a very good question, Andeep.
Let's find out.
First, you'll need to collect the right colour fabric for your hand puppets.
Now, you might have chosen felt, so you'll need to choose the right colour felt or fabric for your hand puppet.
You'll also need to have two pieces of this or a larger piece that you can put the template on twice.
Remember that our puppets have a front and a back piece.
So we put our hand in the middle.
Remember to check your sketch to make sure that it is the right colour.
Jun says, "Soft felt is a brilliant fabric "to use for puppets." Well done, Jun.
Well, soft felt has these properties.
It's soft and easy to move and easy to bend.
It's easily cut with scissors.
And there's lots of different colours as well.
We are ready for our next Check for Understanding, and this is a true or false question.
Soft felt is a good material for puppets because it falls apart.
True or false? Pause the video now and have a little think.
Welcome back.
So, true or false, soft felt is a good material for puppets because it falls apart is false.
Well done, everybody.
Why? Why is it false? That's right, soft felt is a good material for puppets.
It cuts easily with scissors, and it's available in lots of colours, and it's easy to sew on.
Well done, everybody, great work.
These are fabric clips.
They're a little bit like the pegs you might have on a washing line but smaller and might hold the fabric a little bit tighter.
They are used to hold pieces of fabric together, and they are used to hold the template and the felt together so that you can cut and sew the hand puppets.
If you don't have these, another way of doing this is by using maybe some double-sided tape.
These fabric clips are holding the material together.
Can you see? So as later on in the project you are sewing around the outside of your puppet, these fabric clips hold it together quite tight and in the same position.
To cut the felt to shape, you will need firstly to put the piece of felt onto the table, and then you put your template on the top of it.
Now, if your felt is far too big and your template's very little, you will need to possibly cut your felt in half so you have two pieces.
It'll make it smaller and easier, and that'll be cut in half.
You'll have two pieces, a front and a back piece.
Then you can put your template on the front and then use your clips to hold it in place.
Now, you'll notice in the picture, the clips are only on the one side or partially around the template.
If you put the clips all the way around it, when you get your scissors, you'll find it really hard to cut close to that template because you'll be going around each clip.
So you really need the clips just on parts of it to hold it in place.
And then you can use your scissors to move around the template.
And as you move round, you'll be able to start to remove those clips.
So as you move round, carefully cut the felt accurately really, really carefully, very precisely, following the outside of your template.
And as you move round, you will need to keep moving and removing those clips.
Okay? Super.
Once you've cut the piece of felt, remove the clips, and place the template on the other piece of felt.
So do exactly the same thing again.
So you'll end up with two pieces of felt exactly the same size.
So Andeep says, "I have now got two pieces of felt, "one for the back, for the puppet, "and the other piece for the front of the puppet." And if you look in the picture, you should have your front piece of felt, your back piece of felt, and the template all the same size.
To mark out the sewing holes, then use a black pen.
Now, the sewing holes move around the outside of your template, as you can see, just like we practised on that piece of paper or card.
So the sewing holes will go all the way around the outside very carefully, quite close together, so take your time, and it's just a dot for each sewing hole just to help you later on.
It only needs to be on your front template.
You don't need to do both because you'll get in a a bit of a muddle.
Just need your sewing holes on the front piece of template.
So we only need to add the sewing holes to the one piece of felt, and you do not need the sewing holes at the bottom of the puppet because that's where your hand is going to go.
And if you put sewing holes there, you'll forget, and you'll sew it shut, and you won't be able to put your hand in your puppet, and your puppet won't work.
So then we need to get ready to sew.
So what I need you to do at that point is put both pieces of felt together.
Make sure that the one on the top has got the sewing holes so you can see the sewing holes, and the other piece of felt is underneath.
And then you go around with your clips, add in the clips to hold them both together.
Again, you'll notice that I've not put the clips round the hole of the puppet.
Because when I start sewing, I'll be having to move all of them out of the way again.
I have put my clips over the bottom of the puppet where there's no sewing holes because I know, I don't need to say that part, but I also know that will help me to remember and to hold the fabric together.
We are ready for our next Check for Understanding.
Hope you were listening.
That was a lot of information, wasn't it? Which of these can you use to hold the fabric and the template together whilst sewing? Have a little think.
Which of these can you use to hold the fabric and the template together while sewing: the fabric clips, the PVA, or the scissors? Pause the video now and have a little think.
Welcome back.
So which of these can you use to hold the fabric and the template together while sewing? You're right, it's the fabric clips.
Well done.
We are ready for our next task now, Task B.
And I'd like you to choose your two pieces of felt.
They should be slightly bigger than your templates.
Use the fabric clips to hold each piece together to the template.
So felt, template, and then use the fabric clips to hold it together on most of the sides.
Cut around the outline of the whole of the template so you've got one piece of felt.
And then I'd like you to get your second piece of felt and do exactly the same thing.
When you've done that on the front piece of felt that you're choosing to be your front, remember to use the black felt-tip pen to add your sewing holes.
And then, final step, put both pieces of fabric together, both pieces of felt together, pinch them together, and put your fabric clips around them to hold them.
I look forward to seeing you when you've completed Task B.
Pause the video now.
Welcome back.
Well, what a lot of steps you've had to do.
So I wonder if you've managed to complete it.
Hands up if you cut both your pieces of fabric out.
Well done.
Hands up if you managed to put your sewing holes on your first piece of felt.
Well done.
And, finally, did you manage to pin or attach your two pieces of felt together for later? Brilliant.
Wow, this is Alex's.
Alex cut and clipped the hand puppet.
He says, "I really enjoyed using the template "to cut out the felt.
"It was a little tricky, but I took my time." Well, well done, Alex.
Lots of hard work there.
And I can see in that picture you are ready to start sewing in our next session.
I can see you've put your fabric clips all the way around most of your template.
You've left the part there you want to start sewing.
I can see you haven't put any sew holes along the bottom because that's where your hand's gonna go in your puppet.
You remembered all those points.
Well done, Alex.
Well, well done for today's lesson.
You've worked very, very hard, and I know that you are all ready to start sewing soon.
So I wonder if you can give me a thumbs up if you can show me that you've met these learning points.
Are you ready? Super.
A fabric template is a shape drawn to help in cutting out.
Brilliant, well done.
Fabric templates help cut fabric accurately, means very carefully, very exact.
Well done.
Templates are planned on paper.
Super.
And templates are cut out carefully using scissors and then attached to the felt.
That means joined to the felt.
Brilliant.
Well, well done again for all of your hard work, and I'll see you soon.
Bye!.
