Hi, everyone.
I'm Mrs. Courts, and I'm very pleased to join you for today's lesson on sketching ideas.
This is part of the templates in textiles: hand puppets unit.
Our lesson outcome for today is, "I can use a design specification to design a puppet." We have four keywords for today.
And I'll say them first and then you repeat them after me.
Are you ready? Brilliant.
Design specification.
Design specification.
Super.
A design specification describes what a product has to do.
Sketch.
Sketch.
Super.
A sketch is a quick drawing, based on what you can see.
Well done.
And ideas.
Ideas.
Super.
Ideas of a suggestion.
And design.
Design.
Super.
Design is planning how a product will look or work.
Well done, everyone.
In our lesson today of sketching ideas, we have two learning cycles, two parts to our lesson.
And our first part is creating a design specification.
We are going to be making a hand puppet in this unit, and the person using a hand puppet is called a puppeteer.
Now, Alex has decided that he is going to be the person who will be using his hand puppet.
So when he makes his hand puppet, he will be using it.
See, he will be the puppeteer.
But who will be using your hand puppet? This would be the user.
So who's using your hand puppet? Are you making it for yourself? Are you making it for someone at school, a friend, another class? Are you making it for somebody else in the community? So who will be using your hand puppet? Have a little think.
You are going to be making a hand puppet to use in a show.
So therefore, which part of the show will your puppet star in? Will it be the story? Will it be telling a story, or acting a part in the story? Will it be part of a song, or something else? So what will your puppet be used for? And this is for the purpose of your puppet.
Why are you making your puppet? And what does your puppet need to have? Well, it needs to be attractive to others.
That means they look at it and they think, "Oh wow, I'd like to use that puppet." Or, "That's a brilliant puppet.
It looks like this animal," for example.
It needs to have extra detail added to it, so you can tell what it is.
And it needs to be joined so it doesn't fall apart.
Because otherwise, as the person puts the hand puppet on, the puppet might fall into pieces.
So it needs to be strong, so that you can keep using the puppet again, or the user can keep using the puppet again.
And it needs to be big enough for a hand.
Otherwise it could be a bit awkward if you try and put your hand in the puppet and you can't do that, so it won't work.
And it needs to be made of fabric.
Fabric.
So those are what the puppet needs to have, needs to do.
So what does your puppet need? And this is the needs of your puppet.
You might want to have a little think now.
We are ready for our first check for understanding.
Hope you're listening really carefully.
Brilliant.
So when making a puppet, which of these are needs? Needs.
A, to fall apart, B, does it need to be big enough for a hand, and C, does it need to be made of fabric? Pause the video now, and have a little think.
Welcome back.
So when making a puppet, it needs to be big enough for your hand, or for the person's hand using it, and it needs to be made of fabric.
Well done.
And these are the needs of the puppet.
Well done, everyone.
When making a hand puppet, the designer will create a design specification.
There's one of our keywords.
Can you say design specification? Brilliant.
This will help the designer to, as Luca says, "Check the product works." And as Andeep says, "Make an interesting hand puppet." And as Izzy says, "Make a hand puppet which fits on the user's hand." Well done, everyone.
Well, I'm gonna say it first, and then I'd like you to repeat after me.
Let's see if we can fill in the missing gap.
So something that describes what a product has to do is called a design specification.
Your turn.
Are you ready? So something that describes what a product has to do is called a? Well done, a design specification.
Well done, everyone.
We're ready for our next check for understanding now.
And this is a true or false question.
A design specification is something that describes what a project has to do.
Is that true or false? Pause the video now and have a little think.
Welcome back.
So, true or false? A design specification is something that describes what a product has to do is true.
Well done.
Why is it true? Why? That's right.
A design specification helps the designer to think about the user's needs and purpose.
Well done, everyone.
We're ready for our first task now, Task A.
And I'd like you to write a design specification.
Now, you might write this all together as a class, or by yourselves.
So think about who will use your puppet.
And this is the users of your puppet.
What will your puppet be used for, for the purpose of your puppet? And what does your puppet need? So the needs of your puppet.
Pause video now, and join me when you've completed Task A.
Welcome back, everyone.
So did you manage to write your design specification? Brilliant.
Well, in this design specification, the children wrote it as a class, and they decided who will use your puppets? Well the children said, "The children in Reception and Nursery will use the puppets, the hand puppets to tell stories." What will your puppet be used for? And they said, "It'll be used in a show, and the puppet will be in the story." And finally, what does your puppet need? And they said, "The puppet needs to fit on a hand, be strong, and joined well." Well done, everyone, for creating your design specifications.
We're ready for our next part of our lesson now, creating ideas and choosing a final design.
After creating a design specification, designers often make sketches to share their design ideas.
The sketch is a quick drawing, usually done with pencil and paper.
When designers have a new design idea, they draw sketches to show what they're thinking and imagining.
Jacob says, "My idea is to make a hand puppet which will be a character in a story that I've written.
The story is about a farm." That's a lovely idea, Jacob.
We are ready for our next check for standing now.
Hope you are listening carefully.
So designers share their ideas and imagination through drawings, pictures, or sketches.
A, drawings, B, pictures, or C, sketches? Pause the video now, and have a little think.
Welcome back.
So designers share their ideas and imagination through sketches.
Well done.
To sketch, you'll need a worksheet, paper, or a sketchbook.
You'll need a pencil and a rubber.
You might also choose to use colouring pencils and a ruler, depending on what you're drawing.
Designers think about the outline, the outside of the shape, that their puppet will be.
They might decide to make a triangle shape.
Can you draw a triangle with your finger? Maybe it's got three sides.
One, two, three.
Well done.
They might choose to make a square.
Again, four sides.
Draw it with your finger.
Or they might use this curved shape.
There's many other shapes they might use too.
But the curved shapes goes curved around the top, and it's got a flat bottom to their shape.
And that means that we know where to put our hand for our hand puppet.
Well done.
So choose one of these shapes for your puppet.
Have a little think.
And it'll make the template easier later on if you use one of these shapes.
The designer will think about what type of hand puppet they'll be designing and making.
Will it be a person, an animal, or a magical creature? It depends on the purpose of your hand puppet.
Which puppet will you choose to design? Have a little think.
The designer will create a few sketches, just like these ones.
Alex says, "These are my sketches.
Do you like them? Have a little think about which hand puppets you like.
What will you sketch?" After the designer has created a few sketches, they then choose the one that best meets their specification.
Alex says, "I have put a yellow star next to my chosen design." Designers think about how they'll join their materials.
They might use PVA glue, staples, or a needle and thread.
The designer will also choose their materials.
And Alex says, "A material is what something is made from." That's a very good point, Alex.
Well done.
So soft felt is a good fabric for hand puppets.
We're ready for our next check for understanding now, and this is a true or false question.
Designers think about the materials and joining techniques after they finished their design.
So designers think about their materials and joining techniques after they have finished their design.
Is this true or false? Pause video now and have a little think.
Welcome back.
<v ->So designers think about their materials</v> and joining techniques after they finished their design is true.
Why? That's right.
Designers think about what their puppet will look like, the materials they'll use, and how they'll join the materials together during the design process.
Well done.
We are ready for our next task now, Task B.
And I you like to listen really carefully, because there's a few steps to follow.
First, using the templates on the worksheet, sketch two or three design ideas, then share your designs with your friends.
Think about which joining techniques you might use.
And finally, choose the design idea which best matches your design specification, and put a star next to your chosen idea, your chosen design.
Pause the video now and complete Task B.
Welcome back.
So did you manage to sketch two or three design ideas, and share your designs with your friends, thinking about joining techniques, and then putting us down next to your final chosen design? Well done, everyone.
Well, these are Alex's sketches.
He chose a rabbit, so he could share a story about rabbits with his friends in Reception.
Alex said, "I could use cotton wool on my puppet to make it look fluffy too." That's a really good idea, Alex.
And you've even remembered to put your star next to the rabbit design, and you've coloured them in.
Well done.
Well done, everybody.
We've reached the end of our lesson for this day on sketching ideas, and I hope you've had a lot of fun.
I wonder if you can show me a thumbs up if you feel you've met these learning points.
The design specification requires us to make a puppet to use in a puppet show.
Brilliant.
A range of ideas can be drawn before deciding which one to choose to make.
While done.
Sketching, using pencils on paper, is a way to present our ideas.
Brilliant.
And talking about ideas help designers to choose a final design.
Well done.
Well, thank you for all of your hard work today, and I'll see you soon.
