Hi, everyone.
I'm Mrs. Courts.
And I'm very pleased to join you for today's lesson on adding finishing touches to playground structures.
This is part of the Freestanding Structures: Playgrounds unit.
In our lesson today, our lesson outcome is, I can complete a mock-up of a playground structure.
Our lesson has four new keywords today.
I'll say them first, and then you repeat them after me.
Are you ready? Super.
Features, features.
Features make up the structure, the form, or appearance of something.
Effects, effects.
Super.
Effects make designs eye-catching.
Appearance, appearance.
Super.
Appearance is what something looks like.
And our final keyword is texture, texture.
Super.
Texture is what something feels like.
In our lesson today of adding finishing touches to playground structures, we have two parts, two learning cycles.
And our first part is adding detail.
Throughout the making process, designers check their product works, they check their design meets their design specification, and they will check their playground looks appealing and matches their design.
Once a new playground's been made, the designer will follow the designs and ideas to finish them.
Andeep says, "Decorating your final product will make it more attractive to others." That's a very good point, Andeep.
Well done.
So which playground do you prefer, the playground that is not finished or the playground that is finished? You may wish to share your ideas with someone near you.
Well done.
So playground structures are often different.
Have a look at these pictures.
You can see they're all different colours, shapes, sizes, they all do different things, lots of different ideas and designs going on there.
Designers often use the similar features for playgrounds, but also have some unique features within them.
Steps, climbing nets, climbing walls, and wobbly bridges or animals.
Some features you might see in a playground include binoculars, soft flooring, slides, which could be wavy, straight, or curved, and tunnels.
So designers finish their playground structures to make them attractive, eye-catching, and exciting.
But they also add finishing features to make them safer and more usable.
Steps, for example, help people to reach a slide or a platform.
Soft flooring reduces the chance of injury if somebody falls, that's falling between different pieces of equipment to it could be falling from equipment.
And climbing nets, they create more challenging routes to climb and increase sense of adventure.
Again, making them more safer for different age groups.
Materials have different appearances, and you might choose to use different materials in your mock-up playground.
"Appearance is what something looks like," says Jacob.
A material could be dull, it could be shiny, it could be colourful.
Therefore, we are ready for our first check for understanding now.
So I hope you're listening really carefully.
So what does appearance mean? Is it A, what's something tastes like, B, what something smells like, or C, what something looks like? Pause the video now and have a little think.
Welcome back.
So what does appearance mean? That's brilliant.
It means what something looks like.
Well done, everyone.
So materials can have different textures.
Do you remember what the word texture means? Super.
So you might choose to use different textures in your mock-up playground.
And Jacob says, "Texture is what something feels like." Did you get it right? Brilliant.
So material could feel bumpy, crinkly, rough, smooth, or silky.
And again, these are just some different textures.
We are ready for our next check for understanding now.
And I hope you're listening really, really carefully.
Super.
So what does texture mean? Is it A, what something feels like, B, what something smells like, or C, what something looks like? Pause video now and have a little think.
Welcome back.
So what does texture mean? That's right.
Well done.
What something feels like.
We're ready for task A now.
So I'd like you to show your friends your playground sketch model.
Explore a range of materials you could use to finish your playground mock-up, and share your ideas with your friends.
This is a discussion activity, so you could also discuss what special features your playground will have.
Pause video now and join me when you're ready.
Welcome back.
So the children in Oak class had another look at their sketch models.
Have you had a look at yours? Did you have a discussion? Super.
Well, Izzy said, "I'm going to use different textures for the swing seat.
The ropes could be made from pipe cleaners twisted together." And Laura said, "I'm make a telescope for the top of the slide, which is a shell structure.
I might use some different materials to decorate it and give it different appearances." Well done, everyone, and well done for all of your hard work too.
We are ready for the next part of our lesson now, which is adding finishing touches.
After choosing and adding the features to your structure, you then need to decide on the finishing touches.
Jacob said, "Appearance is what something looks like." Well done, Jacob.
Andeep says, "Decorating your final product will make it more attractive to others." So cladding can be used to cover frame structures.
And cladding are pieces of cut material which hide the structures underneath.
And different materials can be used to clad the playground structures.
Here's an example, here's a frame structure.
And by cutting each piece out and making cladding, we can cover over the frame structure.
In this case, card has been used.
To cut these pieces of card to the right sizes, we can mark out sections of card for the cladding using a ruler.
So, first, hold the ruler in place, then put the pencil on the card at the zero mark on the ruler.
And then we need to draw a line to the measurement that you need.
And finally, when you've done that, continue to draw around the shape using the lines and measuring before you cut it out and you've created each piece of cladding.
Don't forget to start at the edge of the paper, and this will help to reduce waste.
And the above example is to show measuring and marking out.
So to cut cards and other materials, we use scissors, and they are a tool.
So we need to remember to hold them carefully, sit down when cutting, and finally, only to cut the cards and suitable materials for our project.
So to use scissors, we need to cut carefully.
And if we're cutting out of shape, we can cut carefully along the lines, remembering to stop at the end of each line.
We need to hold the paper in one hand, the scissors in the other, take our time, and to cut carefully.
When we've cut a line, we shouldn't see the cut marks.
When we cut around a curve, again, remember to turn the paper, not the scissors.
It'll make it safer and easier for you.
Turn the paper, not the scissors.
So we're ready for our next check for understanding now.
So which tools do you need to measure and mark out materials, A, B, or C? Pause the video now and have a little think.
Welcome back.
So which tools do we need to measure and mark out materials is B.
Well done.
So to make a cardboard spring, you could fold card.
So, first, get a long strip of cards and fold the end, then turn the card over and fold the end the other way, and then turn the card back over and fold the folded end the other way again, and keep going back, forwards, back, forwards, folding each time, and then you'll end up with your spring.
A pipe cleaner can also be used to create a spring.
So wind it around a pencil, remove it carefully, and you will have a spring.
When we join together different materials, it's important to think about our joining techniques.
Paint and masking tape work well together.
Paint and sticky tape do not work well together.
Laura said, "Remember, masking tape can be painted.
However, paint does not work on sticky tape." There are lots of different ways that we can add detail to our playground structure and to make it look more appealing to the user.
Small stones might be used for small walls.
Paint could be used to add patterns or create colourful play equipment.
And tissue or brown paper could be rolled, scrunched, folded to add texture to the playground structures.
Other materials that give different effects include cards, which could be coloured, metallic, glossy, or mirrored, sequins or glitter shapes, felt, fabric, or ribbon, pom-poms, pipe cleaners, straws and lolly sticks, bubble wrap, cellophane, and foils.
Additionally, you could use the paints, the glitter paints, the felt pens.
Andeep said, "Remember, you can cut, shape, fold, and roll materials to give your playground a different appearance." Here is some cutting, some shaping, some folding, and some creased tissue paper.
We are ready for task B now.
And I'd like you to use a range of materials to finish your playground.
Remember to make it unique and attractive to others.
Remember to use a range of materials and show different textures, and give different appearances.
And finally, think carefully about the right joining techniques to use.
Pause video now.
Have lots of fun finishing off your playground stretches.
Welcome back.
Well, I hope you've had lots and lots of fun finishing your playgrounds.
Brilliant.
Have you managed to share it with somebody? Super.
Well, the children in our class finished their mock-up playgrounds, and they enjoyed adding all the extra features.
They used different joining techniques, and some were able to fold, shape, and scrunch paper to create different effects too.
Have you finished your mock-up playgrounds? Did you add any extra features? And what is your favourite part of your mock-up playgrounds? You may wish to pause the video now for a few minutes and have a little think.
Super.
We've reached the end of our lesson today on adding finishing touches to playground structures.
I wonder if you'd show me a thumbs up if you feel you've met these learning points along the way.
Super.
So a mock-up is a model that is useful for trying out ideas.
Excellent.
A mock-up shows key design features.
Brilliant.
A mock-up uses card techniques, which create different effects and appearances.
Brilliant.
Different materials with different textures and appearance can be used to create different effects.
Super.
And finishing touches help the user to use the play equipment, but also help the user to find the play equipment appealing.
Brilliant.
Well, thank you for all of your hard work.
And I hope you've had lots and lots of fun.
And I'll see you soon.
Bye.
