Hi everyone, I'm Mrs Corse.

I'm very excited to join you for today's lesson on car properties and uses, this part of the wheels and axles, vehicles unit.

Our lesson outcome for today is I can describe the properties of card and talk about the use of card in packaging.

We have four new keywords for today's lesson.

I'll say them first and then you repeat them after me.

Are you ready? Super, material, material, brilliant, material is what an object is made from.

Properties, properties, super.

Properties is a word to describe what a material is like.

Sustainable, sustainable.

Sustainable means using things in a way that doesn't use them up or harm the environment so there's more for the future.

And our final word is corrugated, corrugated.

Corrugated is a type of card with wavy layers for strength.

Well done.

We have two parts to our lesson today and in our first learning cycle, we're going to learn about the properties of card.

A material is what an object is made from and designers choose the best material to work for their project.

And this is usually based on Lucas says, "What does a designer want to make? What does the design need to do?" And finally, "Which is the best material to complete the task?" Have a look at these objects.

What material is each object made from? Spoon, the bin.

Clothing and toilet roll tubes.

Well, the spoon, you're right, it's made from wood, wood.

The bin is made from plastic, well done.

And the clothing is made from fabric and the toilet roll tubes are made from cardboard.

Well done, we're ready for our first check for understanding, are you sitting comfortably? Brilliant.

A material is A, what an object is made from.

B, what an object does or C, what noise an object makes.

What is a material? So material is what an object is made from.

What an object does or what noise an object makes? Pause video and have a little think.

Welcome back.

So a material is, you're right, well done.

It's what an object is made from.

Sometimes designers use more than one material or the same material in different ways to make a product.

The material needs to suit the way a product will be used.

For example, have a look at these chairs.

The fabric and metal chairs are good for comfort.

The wooden chairs are good for indoors and can be easy cleaned.

You might have them around your table.

And then metal chairs and plastic chairs are both good for outdoor use.

Vehicles are made from lots of different materials too, and designers choose the right material for the job.

Lucas says "Some toy cars are made from plastic so they're light for small children and so they can be cleaned easily." Well done Lucas.

He says, "Most real cars are made from metal so they're strong and they protect the people inside if they're in an accident." And finally says, "A model car made in school or at home might be made from cardboard, which is easy to cut and fold during construction." What great ideas Lucas, well done.

Card is a good material for a project in school or at home.

Card and paper can be made from trees and from recycled paper and card.

You might recycle paper and card at home or in school.

Cutting down trees damages the environment and destroys habitats.

A habitat is the place when an animal or a plant lives.

Trees can be replanted but they take a very long time to grow back.

Cardboard and paper are both sustainable.

Can you say that word sustainable? Sustainable.

Brilliant, so cardboard and paper are both sustainable and if something's sustainable, it means it can be used in a way that doesn't use it up or harm the environment so there's more for the future.

Recycling cards makes it a sustainable material.

Recycling means to collect a material and change it into something new instead of throwing it away.

We are ready for our next check for understanding.

Are you sitting beautifully? Super, cardboard and paper can come from, is it A, hay, B, trees or C, recycled paper and card? Be a little bit and think carefully about your answers.

Cardboard and paper can come from hay, trees or recycled paper and card.

Pause video now and have a little think.

Welcome back.

So cardboard and paper can come from trees.

Well done, and did you guess the other one? Brilliant, recycled paper and card, well done.

Card is made of lots of layers of paper and these are some of the properties of card.

Card is thicker and stronger than paper.

It's not too expensive, it holds its shape.

It is easy to decorate.

It doesn't tear as easily as paper.

It is recyclable.

It is sustainable and it is easy to get.

So these are some of the properties of card.

Luca says, "Cardboard is a great material for making all types of objects." Izzy said, "I do not agree because cardboard goes soggy when it is wet." Who do you agree with? Have a little think, that's right.

When card gets wet it goes soggy, well done Izzy.

However, it is a good material for lots of things because of its other properties.

Every material is suited for different things.

Well done Lucas and Izzy.

If we compare paper and card, we can see quite a few similarities and differences.

Card is thicker, paper is thinner.

Card does not tear as easily, but paper does tear easily.

Card holds its shape, but paper bends and creases more easily and card is stronger and paper is weaker.

However, both card and paper are sustainable and recyclable materials.

They both come from trees and be made from recycled paper and card products.

They're both easy to get and they are both not too expensive, although card is a little bit more expensive.

They are both easy to decorate and they are both easy to join.

Overall card is a much better and harder wearing material than paper.

It is a good choice for craft and design projects.

Lucas says "Card is the same as paper." Izzy said "Card and paper are different." Who do you agree with? Card and paper are made from trees and recyclable card and paper.

However, they have some similar and some different properties and this means they can be used for different purposes.

We are now ready for our first task, task A.

And I'd like you to talk about the properties of card and which properties are missing.

Have a look at the table and the table has some missing properties.

What are they? The table says that card is not too expensive.

Easy to decorate, easy to get, sustainable and does not tear as easily as paper.

But what are the three missing properties? Pause the video now and complete task A.

Welcome back.

Well by now you should have had to look at the table.

Did you notice the three missing properties? Brilliant.

Jun spoke to his friends and decided that he knew what the three missing properties were.

He thought they were thicker and stronger than paper, holds its shape and recyclable.

Are they the three properties that you got? Well done.

We are now ready for our second learning cycle and this is using card in packaging.

To make a vehicle with wheels and axles, it is as important to choose the right material for the chassis, the wheels, the axle and axle holders.

Can you see the diagram where it shows you the chassis, the axle holder, the axle and the wheel, well done.

Cardboard is a sustainable material.

It can be easily decorated and have card, paper and other materials easily joined to it to create different effects or parts of the vehicle.

Packaging is usually made from cardboard.

You might have noticed some packaging at home, cereal boxes and other items. Jun says, what might you find in these cardboard boxes? That's a good question, Jun, I wonder.

Can you spot any clues? That's right, one says heavy.

I wonder what's heavy that could go in a cardboard box.

Large items like fridge freezers, washing machines and televisions are usually stored and transported, that means taken from one place to another in large, thick cardboard boxes.

Cardboard packaging is good because it, Jun says, can be stiff and strong.

Easily decorated, protects the items inside and is sustainable and recyclable.

Well done Jun.

Protect means to look after something.

Cardboard packaging can be made from different types of cardboard.

There's corrugated card, thinner card and thicker card.

This is corrugated card.

And Jun says, "What is corrugated card?" Have a little look at the picture.

Can you spot anything unusual, anything different? Well, corrugated card is lightweight and strong.

It is usually used as protection for objects during transportation.

Remember that's when they're taken from one place to another.

This is corrugated card.

And Jun says, "What are the layers?" Well, the layers are paper on either side and a fluted layer of card in the middle.

It has wavy or honeycomb layer in the centre, which is known as this fluted layer.

Sometimes the corrugated cards can be rolled in one direction easier than the other direction.

This is because of the ripples on it.

And it can also have the fluting on show.

Jun says "It can sometimes be rolled into a cylinder, a bit like the shade for glue stick." Jun said, "It is very ripley, can I decorate that?" Oh, that's a good question Jun, could you see the ripples on the picture? It can be decorated but often looks like it has ridges travelling through underneath.

You can add a smooth piece of card or paper to the outside to decorate it.

This is thin cardboard.

And Jun said "Thin cardboard can be shaped into tubes or folded easily." Thinner means it has less height or depth to it.

And thin cardboard is usually found in cereal boxes, toilet roll tubes and food packaging.

You might have spotted this in your recycling containers at home or in school.

Thin card is ideal for projects and Jun said "Thin card is easy to find, easy to decorate and good for finishing projects." Well done Jun.

It is easy to cut with scissors and shape to use within projects and it's easy to join using a range of tapes and glues alongside staples, paperclips and split pins.

However, this is thick cardboard and Jun says, "I can see that it is thicker than the other piece of card." Thicker cardboard can be used on and packaging and card comes in different thicknesses just like sizes.

Jun says, "That does look very hard to cut with scissors." Oh, I think you might be right Jun.

Cutting and shaping the card can be a problem if the card is too thick and sometimes scissors will not go through.

Multiple layers of card can be used to create this thicker card.

Designers always focus on the shape of the packaging and think about what the packaging is needed for and some shapes are stronger than others.

This cardboard tube is very strong if you push on either end of it, but if you push in the sides of the cardboard tube, it will collapse in, fold or it could crease.

Designers also think about the size of the packaging to choose the best card for their use.

And the bigger the piece of the card, the stronger the card will need to be.

We are ready for our final task now, task B.

And I'd like you to first of all explore a range of card packaging.

Use the squeeze and squash test to see what happens.

Does the cardboard bend, does it crease or tear? And what type of packaging card is used? And then part two, I'd like you to find an example of each type of card.

Which do you prefer and why? Remember our thicker card, our thinner card, and our corrugated card.

Pause the video now and join me when you've completed task B.

Welcome back.

Well, by now you should have had lots of fun exploring a range of card packaging and using the squeeze and squash test, you could also found lots of different types of cards.

Did you manage to find any corrugated card? Brilliant.

Well Lucas tested a range of recycled cardboard packaging, Lucas said "Quite a lot of packaging was thin pieces of card.

And when squeezed, the card creased on each side of the flat rectangular panel." Lucas was able to find examples of each type of card.

"I found an example of each one." He says, "I really like the corrugated card because it felt different and fascinating the way you could roll it in one way but not the other." Very good Lucas, well done.

Well, I hope you've all had lots of fun exploring card.

We've reached the end of our lesson for today and I wonder if you can show me a thumbs up to show me if you've met these learning points.

Card comes from trees and can be sustainable if carefully sourced.

Well done, card can be used for many products because of its properties.

Well done, and different types of cardboard are used for different reasons.

Brilliant, well thank you for joining me today and I hope you've had lots of fun.

See you soon, bye.
