Hello.

Thank you for joining me for your Design & Technology lesson.

My name is Mrs. Conway, and I will be guiding you through your learning today.

So today's learning outcome is I can create a clear plan to make a moving animal.

And these are our keywords.

We have action plan, evaluate, feedback, and adapt.

I'll go through each one of these in a little bit more detail as we work through the lesson together.

So the first thing we're going to look at then are action plans.

The local Science Museum are creating a new display called "Products that use air." The exhibition will help primary school pupils explore how air can be used to make things move.

They have invited local schools to design pneumatic, moving air, animal toys to use in the interactive display.

A moving animal toy uses air to move one or more of its parts.

Now a simple pneumatic, or moving air, system is used to make it work.

And here we have an example of a simple pneumatic system.

And this is just using a bottle, some plastic tubing, and a balloon at the end of it.

Now when the bottle is pressed, the air is pressed or forced down that tubing, into the balloon, and the balloon expands.

And we can use that to make a moving animal toy, because as the balloon expands, it pushes the jaws of the moving animal open.

Now this is Izzy's design specification for a moving crocodile toy.

And she broke this down into different headings.

She had product, function, which is what the product should do, user, which is who will use the product, performance, which is how it will work, materials, which is what it is made from, and appearance, which is what it will look like.

And she's made some statements next to each of these headings to create her design specification, which is almost like her intent, what the product needs to do or needs to have.

So under product, she has said it's going to be a moving animal, a crocodile specifically.

For function, she has said that it will show how air can make something move.

The user is going to be primary school pupil.

Performance, she has said the balloon would inflate, lifting the top jaw.

Materials, she suggested large cardboard egg box, plastic tubing, plastic bottle, and balloon.

And for the appearance, she has described that it will be painted green with added eyes and teeth.

So she's made some really clear needs and wants with her design specification there.

Now to make a moving animal toy, we need to write an action plan as well.

An action plan details the steps we need to take to make the product.

And this will include how the main structure of the toy will be made, which pneumatic system will be used, and how the product will be finished.

Okay, quick check on understanding action plans then.

What does an action plan contain? Is it a, product research, b, the user requirements, or c, steps needed to make a product? Pause the video here.

Just take a moment to think about your answer.

And the correct answer? It was c.

So an action plan contains steps needed to make a product.

Well done if you got that right.

So the first thing we said needed to be considered for an action plan is how the main structure of the toy will be made.

Now, part of this you need to consider, what will you use to create the shape of your animal? And how will you shape it? So, for example, small recycled cardboard boxes, such as egg boxes or tissue boxes, can work really well for this.

Now Izzy sets out the steps to shape the main body of her crocodile moving toy.

So she's going to get an egg box, carefully cut the lid off along the join, and then reattach the lid on the shorter edge.

Then she needs to consider what pneumatic system will be used.

You need to think about this too.

Which pneumatic system are you using? And I've given you three there to remind yourself of different possible pneumatic systems that could be used.

You've got the single pneumatic system, which has a balloon at the end of it.

And as the balloon is filled with gas, then it inflates.

You've also got the option of using syringes instead.

You've got two options with syringes here.

You've got the syringe with a single syringe at the other end or you've got the syringe with two syringes, or double syringes, at the other end using a Y connector.

You also want to consider which parts will you need to make it and where will it be placed in the main body.

Now Izzy writes down which system she will use and where it will go.

She's going to assemble a bottle and balloon system.

So that was the first option of what I just showed you.

And the bottle will be outside the main body.

That's the main body of the crocodile.

And the balloon will be embedded, which means inside the egg box or mouth.

And the last thing you need to consider then is how the product will be finished.

So things that you need to consider here.

Do any additional or extra parts need to be added, such as teeth, eyes, a tail, all the bits that make it fun and make it really look like the animal you're intending it to be? What color will the final product be? And what will you use to add the color? Will it be things like paint or tissue paper? Izzy sets out the steps to finish her moving animal toy.

So she has said make and attach 10 card teeth to the top and bottom jaw.

Very important.

You can't have a crocodile without nice, sharp teeth.

Make and attach two card eyes to the top of the head section.

And paint the whole body green.

Now Izzy is trying to remember what the word embed means.

Which one's correct? Is it a, cut off, b, stick on, or c, fit inside? Pause the video here.

Just take a moment to think about your answer to help Izzy here.

And the correct answer? It was to fit inside, which was c.

So the word embed means to fit inside.

Well done if you got that right.

It's going to be up to you now to have a go at a task.

I'd like you to write an action plan for your own moving animal design.

Now you need to think carefully about each of the following tasks.

The first one, how the main structure of the toy will be made, which pneumatic system will you use, and how the product will be finished.

Once you've thought carefully about each of those, I'd then like you to write down the steps needed for each of the three tasks.

It's time to for you to have a go at this now, so pause the video here and good luck.

Okay, how did you get on? By having a really clear action plan, that's going to make it a lot easier for when you come to make your own product.

Think of it as a bit like following a recipe when you're cooking at home.

So let's have a look at Izzy's example just for you to compare yours to, and you can double check that you've got all the detail that you need.

So Izzy said that she's going to get a large egg box, carefully cut the lid off along the join, reattach the lid on the short edge using a cardboard hinge.

She's also said she's going to assemble a bottle and balloon pneumatic system.

And then for the finishing of the product, she said she's going to make and attach 10 card teeth to the top and bottom jaw, make and attach two card eyes to the top of the head section, and paint the whole body green.

You will have different answers to Izzy's, but hopefully you've got a really clear action plan of how you're going to make your product.

So next, we're now going to look at choosing tools and materials.

So as well as thinking about the steps needed to make a product, it is useful to make a list of the equipment, tools, and materials you will need.

Now this will help you to get everything you need before you start to make the product and will save time.

It's all about being organized.

Now, why is it important to think about the things you need before you start making? I'd like you to pick two possible answers.

So is it a, so no one else can use them, b, to have everything ready, or c, to save time? Remember, you're picking two answers here.

Okay, pause the video here to have a little think.

And the correct answers? To have everything ready and to save time.

Well done if you've got those right.

Now Izzy reviewed the steps in her action plan and thought about the things she would need for each part.

She separated them into two lists, materials and tools and equipment.

Let's have a look at materials.

She has suggested she's going to need an egg box, some thin card, the plastic bottle, plastic tubing, balloon, paint, and PVA glue.

For tools and equipment, she said she will need scissors, sticky tape, paint brushes and pots, and felt tip pens.

Now she came up with those lists by reviewing her action plan, looking back over the action plan and picking out what she might need.

Another quick check then.

True or false.

A list of tools and equipment is part of an action plan.

Is that true or false? Pause the video here to take a moment to think about your answer.

And the correct answer? It is true.

So a list of tools and equipment is part of an action plan.

Steps to follow and a list of tools and equipment are all part of the action plan.

Okay, it's gonna be up to you to have a go at another task.

I'd like you to think through the steps on your action plan, the one that you wrote as your first task.

I'd like you to write down the materials, tools, and equipment you will need to complete your product.

And I'd like you to separate them into two lists, just like I did before, materials and tools and equipment.

Add the lists to your action plan.

Okay, it's gonna be up to you now then, so pause the video here to have a go at this task.

Right, how did you get on creating that list of your materials and tools and equipment? Hopefully you were able to work it all out by looking over your action plan and the steps of your action plan that you already have created.

So under materials, Izzy wrote egg box, thin card, plastic bottle, plastic tubing, balloon, paint, and PVA glue.

And under tools and equipment, she wrote scissors, sticky tape, paint brushes and pots, and felt tip pens.

And she's explained here, "This will help me get everything I need for my product." Absolutely.

And that's the purpose of this list, to be nice and organized, to get everything you need before you start, and to save time.

Have a little look at your list.

Just double check you've got everything you need.

Just compare your list to Izzy.

She you may have thought of something that you might need that you haven't thought of.

So lastly then we're going to look at evaluating an action plan.

Now, evaluation is an important part of designing.

It's a chance to think carefully about how a product is made.

And evaluations are often done at the end of the design process.

But it is a good idea to evaluate your action plan before you make your product as well.

This makes it easier to adapt and to change things.

Okay, quick true or false for you.

Evaluations help to check action plans will create the expected product.

Is that true or is it false? Pause the video here just to think about your answer.

The correct answer was true.

Absolutely, by thinking through the steps and resources needed to make a product, we can check it will have everything it needs to work as expected.

Well done if you've got that right.

Now, Izzy asked Andeep to check her action plan using her design specification.

So here, she has the list of materials and tools and equipment she will need to make her product.

And Andeep has just helped her out here.

"I think you could be more specific about the size or color of some of the materials." This is some really great feedback from Andeep.

And actually, yes, she could be a little bit more specific because there might be specific colors or sizes that she does need.

Izzy then thought about Andeep's feedback and adapted her action plan.

So you can see on her action plan of list of materials, she's now explained that it's a large egg box that she needs and that it's actually 300 millimeters of plastic tubing that she needs.

She's also said specifically she wants a red balloon.

And that's probably so that it looks a bit like a tongue for the crocodile.

And also, she wants specifically green paint.

And she's just explained, "This will help me get exactly the right materials." Absolutely.

Okay, quick check then on the word adapt.

What does the word adapt mean? Is it a, to make small changes, b, to start all over again, or c, to get resources together? Pause the video here just to take a moment to think about your answer.

The answer then was to make small changes.

So to adapt something is to make small changes to it.

Andeep's just explained here, "Sometimes small changes can make a product better.

You don't need to start the whole design again." Absolutely.

Okay, over to you then for your last few tasks.

I'd like you to swap your action plans with a partner, just like Izzy and Andeep did.

Use their design specification to evaluate their design.

Have they included everything they will need to do? And have they listed all the tools they will need? Have they included enough detail in there? I'd then like you to give feedback to your partner.

The second part of this task then is I'd like you to then think about the feedback you received, just like Izzy did.

Are there any changes you will need to make to your action plan? And if there are, adapt your plan if needed.

Okay, pause the video here to have a go at these last tasks.

Okay, how did you get on? Now Andeep evaluated Izzy's action plan and gave her feedback, and we've already seen that.

So he suggested that she thought more about the details of the color and size of her materials.

And she added more detail in by being more specific to the size of the egg box, the amount of plastic tubing, the color of the balloon, and the color of the paint that she needed.

So Izzy adapted her action plan to add in more detail.

Were you able to adapt your action plan based on the feedback from your partner? Hopefully you've got all the detail you need in there.

Now at this point in the lesson, you should have a really clear action plan that includes the steps of how you're going to make your product, all the materials and tools and equipment you're going to need, and you've adapted that list or that action plan to include any missing detail or information that you may need based on your feedback from your partner.

This is going to give you a really great start in the making of your product and going to help you keep nice and organized.

Okay, let's summarize today's lesson then.

Today we've been looking at planning a pneumatic system.

Now an action plan contains the steps to complete the project.

An action plan contains a list of materials the project will need.

An action plan also contains a list of tools that will be required.

And an action plan may change and adapt during the project.

Well done for all of your hard work today.

Hopefully you've got a really clear action plan and you are ready to make your toy.

Thank you for joining me.

And I will see you soon.
