A vector can be used to describe a translation.

Translation is a transformation in which every point of a shape moves the same distance in the same direction.

If one shape can fit exactly on top of another using rotation, reflection or translation, then the shapes are congruent.

A vertex is the point where two or more line segments meet. The plural is vertices.

In this unit, pupils explore the effects of different transformations and whether the transformed shape is congruent or similar to the original shape. This is built on in the future unit where pupils formalise the criteria for determining congruence in triangles and study rotational symmetry

The vector $${-3 \choose 7}$$ shows the translation {{ }} by 3 units and up by 7 units.

$${4 \choose 3}$$ is an example of {{ }} notation.  This type of notation can be used to describe a translation.

Which of the following shows a translation by $${-2 \choose 3}$$?

Has a translation taken place? $$A(3,4) \mapsto A^{\prime}(5,7) $$, $$B(5,8) \mapsto B^{\prime}(7,11) $$ and $$C(0,5) \mapsto C^{\prime}(2,7) $$?
