Hello, everyone.
It's me again, Mrs. Steele, and I've got another music lesson for us to explore together today.
Today's lesson is called Creating an ostinato to help us to keep in time.
By the end of today's lesson, you will be able to create a rhythmic ostinato to help us to keep in time together.
Here are the keywords we'll need in our learning today.
There are quite a few.
Pulse: the regular, steady heartbeat of the music.
Beat: the playing or showing of the steady pulse, like the ticking of a clock.
Rhythm: the pattern of sounds that we play and sing.
Ostinato: a repeated musical pattern.
And finally, texture: the combination of different layers of sounds.
We know how important it is to warm up at the start of every music lesson.
Warming up using movement helps us to feel the pulse so that we can make music together, in time.
It's lots of fun too.

Let's begin by playing an ostinato to a strong beat.
We can sing sea shanties and other working songs together.
We've been doing a lot of that in this unit.
These songs have a steady pulse that's often sounded as a strong beat, and we know that playing the steady pulse as a strong beat can help us to play and sing in time together.
We can also play an ostinato to help us sing and play in time.
Remember that an ostinato is a repeated musical pattern.
We can already play an ostinato for "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?" This ostinato sounds like this: What shall we do? (hands clapping rhythm) What shall we do? What shall we do? Listen to "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?" and join in with our ostinato.
Tap your knees and whisper the lyrics in time.
Remember to feel the pulse and listen to the steady beat.
Here comes the music.
Join in and tap the ostinato.

Each ostinato is a layer of sound like the layers in this delicious cake here.
We can combine these layers of sound and play them at the same time.
Combining layers of sound is called texture.
It's time for a check-in with our learning so far.
True or false? Combining layers of sound is called ostinato.
Show me a thumb up if you think that's true or a thumb down if you think that's false.
Here comes the answer.
That's false.
Well done if you knew that.
Texture is combining layers of sound and ostinato is a repeated musical pattern.
We can use an ostinato to create one layer of sound.
It's time for another big musical challenge now.
Let's split into two teams to create texture by playing ostinato 2 and ostinato 3 at the same time in "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?" Team A, you are going to play ostinato 2 on claves and Team B are going to play ostinato 3 on the drums. Whisper the lyrics and listen to the strong drumbeat to help you to play your ostinato in time.
Remember to play your instruments softly so you can have open ears and hear how everything fits together.
Let's take a look at the slide that you might need to complete this challenge.
Here it is.
Team A are going to play this ostinato on claves.
Hoo-ray up-she-rises.
(hands clapping) And Team B are going to play this ostinato on their drums. "Earl-eye in-the-morn-ing." (hands clapping) Remember to whisper those words and play your instruments softly so you can hear how everything fits together as you play.
This challenge may take a lot of practice.
Playing two ostinati at the same time is quite tricky.
Press pause now to organize yourselves into your two teams, A and B.
And meet me back here for the music.
Are you ready, Team A and Team B? Here comes, "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?" Play your ostinato.
(piano plays jaunty sea shanty) ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ Earlye in the morning ♪ ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ (drum thudding) ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Earlye in the morning ♪ ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ Earlye in the morning ♪ ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Earlye in the morning ♪ Hello again.
How did you get on? Were your team successful? I wonder how you know.
Here are two of our Oak teams. This is how they got on.
The first team says, "We whispered the lyrics as we tapped the rhythm of our ostinato." Well done if you did that in your team too.
And our second Oak team says, "We listened to the strong drumbeat to help us to play in time." That's a great strategy to be successful too.
Now let's move on to creating a rhythmic ostinato.
We know that the sea shanty, "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?" has a steady pulse that's sounded as a strong beat.
In this song, we can feel the pulse and sound the beat by counting one, two, three, four.
Practice sounding the beat in "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor? Feel the pulse and tap your knees.
And as you tap, whisper, "One, two, three, four." Here comes the music.
(piano plays jaunty sea shanty) ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ Earlye in the morning ♪ (drum thudding) ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Earlye in the morning ♪ ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ What shall we do with the drunken sailor ♪ ♪ Earlye in the morning ♪ ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Hooray and up she rises ♪ ♪ Earlye in the morning ♪ Jun has created his own ostinato to add to "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?" It sounds like this: Sea shan-ty sea, shh.
(hands clapping) Sea shan-ty sea, shh Sea shan-ty sea, shh.
And Jun's gone one step further and notated his ostinato.
He's written it down like this.
Sea shan-ty sea, shh.
(hands clapping) Each rhythm Jun has chosen fits neatly into a beat.
You can see the numbers of the beats, 1, 2, 3, 4 along the top there.
Jun says, "We can read my ostinato from left to right.
We can sound the beat in this song by counting 'One, two, three, four'." And you did that just then.
"Each box in the grid is one beat.
We can chant the rhythm of my ostinato over the beat." Sea shan-ty sea, shh.
(hands clapping) Sea shan-ty sea, shh.
Sea shan-ty sea, shh.
Now it's your turn to try playing Jun's ostinato.
There are two ways we can whisper the rhythm to help us keep in time.
The first one we already know.
It sounds like this.
Sea shan-ty sea, shh.
The second way is like this.
Ta, ta-di ta, shh.
Choose one of these ways and practice clapping the rhythm as you whisper.
Sea shan-ty sea, shh, or, ta, ta-di ta, shh.
Press pause to practice that now.
Sofia is also a composer and she's composed a different ostinato.
It sounds like this.
Shan-ty shan-ty sea shan-ty.
(hands clapping) Shan-ty shan-ty sea shan-ty.
Sofia has notated her ostinato too, like this.
Shan-ty, shan-ty, sea shan-ty.
Just like Jen's ostinato, each rhythm Sofia has chosen fits neatly into a beat.
And you can see the numbers of the beats, 1, 2, 3, 4 along the top.
Try playing Sofia's ostinato now.
Choose which way you'd like to chant the rhythm and tap it as you whisper.
Press pause to try that where you are.
It's your turn to be a composer now and create your own ostinato for "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?" To do that, complete the grid using any combination of the choices below.
You can choose from: ta, or sea, ta-di, or shan-ty (hands clapping) or shh, which is which is always shh.
As long as you fill up each box of the grid with one of those choices, you'll create a brilliant ostinato.
Remember to practice chanting and clapping it.
Press pause now and you could work in a group or all together to create your own ostinato.
I'll see you soon.
Hello, composers.
Now we're going to split into teams to perform.
Let's combine three layers of sound to create texture.
Team A are going to whisper and clap the ostinato you've just composed.
Team B is going to sing and Team C is going to play a steady drumbeat, an important job because it will help keep everybody in time together.
Press pause now to organize yourselves into your three teams and meet me back here for the music.

Lucas says, "In Team A, I whispered the words to help me play the ostinato accurately." Well done if you did that too.
And Aisha says, "In Team B, I listened to the drumbeat to help me to sing in time." That's a fantastic idea too.
We've reached the end of our lesson together today, so let's take a moment to think about everything we know.
We know that an ostinato is a repeated musical pattern and we know that playing an ostinato to a strong beat can help us to sing and play in time together, just as you just did.
We know that we can create our own rhythmic ostinato to help us to keep in time together and we can combine different layers of sound to create texture, for example, we can play different ostinati at the same time.
And you did that today too.
What great musical learning, everyone.
I'm looking forward to seeing you again soon for another music lesson.
Bye-bye.
