Hello musicians, it's me again, Mrs. Steele, and I'm so excited we're going to be learning together again today.
In today's lesson, we're going to be learning about singing together to celebrate.
But before we start with our celebrating, there are a few listening examples that don't feature in today's video, so please take a moment before we begin to find those listening examples now.
There's a teacher guidance slide at the beginning of the slide deck to help you with this.
Are you ready? Let's get celebrating.
By the end of today's lesson, you will understand that singing can be a powerful way for communities to celebrate and to improve well-being.
Here are the keywords that we'll need in our learning today.
Unison, the same tune sung or played at the same time.
Lyrics, the words of a song.
Community, our important word in this unit, a group of people who are connected because they have things or places in common, for example, a school community.
And round, a song structure where multiple groups sing the same melody, but start at different times.
We know that it's important to warm up before every music lesson.
This whole class singing game helps us to connect to our class community, and it helps us to warm up our voices and our bodies.
It's called "Hot Potato." First, watch the video to remember how to play the game if you need to.
Then play together as an ensemble.
As you are sitting in your circle to play, remember to make eye contact with your ensemble, listen to each other and work as a team.
Here comes the video for "Hot Potato," then press pause to play it in your class community.

We're going to start by learning about singing in a crowd to motivate and celebrate.
Singing together is a meaningful way for us to feel connected to our communities.
When we sing together, we can feel a sense of togetherness and belonging.
Singing can be particularly powerful in a large crowd.
I wonder if you've ever sung in a large crowd.
Sam here likes to sing in a crowd when she watches her favorite football team.
Sports fans often sing together to motivate and celebrate their team.
When people sing the same tune at the same time, it's called, singing in unison.
Izzy's done that before.
She says, "Singing in unison can make us feel united and powerful.
In a big crowd many voices come together as one.
All of our voices can be heard and are stronger together." Fans of England Women's national football team, the Lionesses sing together as a community.
They sing in unison altogether to celebrate victories and express joy to demonstrate their support and motivate the team to play well, and it helps them to create a shared identity as Lioness supporters.
I wonder if any of you support a particular sports team and if you've ever sung together as a community of fans.
It's time to find your first listening example.
It's a song that Lioness supporters particularly like to sing, and it's called "Proud," by Heather Small.
Listen carefully to the lyrics.
As you listen, think about this question, why do you think fans chose this song to motivate their team? Press pause now to find this listening example.
Hi again, as you were listening, did you think about our question? Why do you think Lioness supporters might have adopted this song to motivate their team? Ella Toone, a midfielder for the Lionesses, had her own ideas about that.
She said, "That one really sticks out.
The words are really fitting before you step out onto the pitch.
You pull the England top on and you're proud." Some songs sung at football matches can have many layers of meaning.
A good example of this is the Welsh song, "Yma o Hyd," by Dafydd Iwan.
The composer wanted to write a song that would champion and celebrate the survival of the Welsh language and culture.
The Welsh words which translate into English as, "I'm still here, in spite of everyone and everything, I'm still here," express pride and resilience within the Welsh community.
"Yma o Hyd" was written 40 years ago, but it's often still sung by Wales national football team supporters.
It's time to find your next listening example.
It's a new version of the song that was recorded for Wales for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
It features the composer, Dafydd Iwan, singing with over 30,000 Wales supporters at a match in Cardiff.
As you listen, can you hear the moment where his solo voice is joined by a huge crowd of football fans all singing in unison? That must have been a really powerful moment to experience.
Press pause to find your listening example of "Yma o Hyd" recorded for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Perhaps the most special thing about singing in a large crowd is that it can create powerful emotions, both in the people singing and the people listening.
Speaking about his performance with the Wales fans, who are known as the Red Wall, Iwan said, "I get emotional singing certain songs, especially this one, 'Yma o Hyd.
' The atmosphere and sound made it all the more special.
The Red Wall was like one big choir singing it to me." Have you ever sung in a large crowd, perhaps at a sporting event or a concert? Imagine you're singing in unison with thousands of people to celebrate your favorite sports team.
How does it make you feel? Press pause now to share your ideas about this, and you could share any experiences you have of singing in a large crowd.
Here are some of our Oak friends ideas.
Aisha says, "Singing in a big crowd makes me feel excited and full of energy.
It's amazing to be part of such a big sound." And Jacob says, "Singing in a crowd makes him feel strong and proud.
It's a powerful way to show that I believe in my team." Sometimes sports fans adopt songs to sing as part of their community, like "Proud" or "Yma o Hyd," but sometimes new songs are written especially for sports fans to sing together as a community.
An example of this is in 2023 a brand new song was composed to motivate the England Women's football team, the Lionesses and their fans ahead of the World Cup.
And all the proceeds from that song went to charities that champion women's sport.
I wonder if you've heard the song before? Did you know it? It's called "Call Me A Lioness," by Hope FC, and it's the next listening example that you need to find.
Have a listen and feel the pulse and tap your knees to the beat.
Then listen a second time, this time joining in with the chorus.
As you join in, think about how you want your voices to sound, to capture the emotion of the song.
Can you make your voices sound full of joy, full of hope and full of pride for your team? Press pause now to find and listen to "Call Me A Lioness." Hello again.

Let's move on to learning about singing together for improved well-being.
One of the very special things about singing is that we can use songs to express our happiness, and the act of singing can make us feel happy too.
There's a famous quote that says, "I sing because I'm happy and I'm happy because I sing." There are many reasons why singing can feel joyful.
Here are some of our Oak friends ideas.
Aisha reminds us that it encourages deep breathing and makes us to feel calm.
Alex says, "When we sing together, we feel connected, and we can express our feelings." And singing is a whole body activity.
That's right, Lucas.
It can really contribute to good well-being.
And finally, Sam is telling us that singing releases feel-good chemicals in our brains, which can boost our mood.
That's very true.
It's a bit magic really.
There's time to squeeze in a quick check-in with our learning.
Which of the following are reasons that singing can help us to feel good? A, singing releases feel-good chemicals in the brain that can boost our mood.
B, singing can help us to feel connected to our community.
And C, singing encourages deep breathing, which can help us to feel calm.
Press pause to decide which of those reasons are reasons that singing can help us to feel good.
Hello again, what did you decide was your answer? I tried to trick you really.
Well done if you spotted that all three are just some of the reasons that singing can feel joyful.
I wonder what songs make you feel joyful and happy when you sing them, and where you like to sing them.
Lucas has an example.
He says, "I love to sing 'This Little Light Of Mine.
' It makes me feel peaceful when we sing it in assembly." Your challenge now is to choose a song that you love to sing as a class, or in your whole school community and sing it together.
As you're singing, think about what makes this particular song special, and how does it make you feel when you sing it.
You could create a recording to share with another class in your school.
Press pause now to decide and sing a song that you love in your class, or whole school community.

But before you go, let's take a moment to think about everything we've been learning together.
We know that when we sing together, we can feel a sense of connectedness and belonging in our communities.
And we've learned about how singing in unison is an important part of sports fans celebrating victories, motivating their team and creating a shared identity.
And we've thought about how singing in a crowd can feel powerful and emotional for the listener and the participant.
And we've learned that people use singing to express joy and to feel joy, because singing releases feel-good chemicals in the brain and can help us to feel calm and happy.
I hope this lesson has made you feel calm and happy, it has me, and I'm looking forward to seeing you again soon for another one.
Bye musicians, see you soon.
