Hi there.

Welcome to your remote learning lesson of PE.

Today's lesson is part of the Introduction to Target Games unit and today's lesson is called Accuracy: Can you strike a star?

Now, my name's Miss Hacking and I'm really excited to be your PE teacher today.

So for this lesson, you will need an object to throw.

This could be a small ball or a rolled up pair of socks.

You will need six targets.

Now this could be your soft toys, it could be shoes, it could be books, basically anything that you can put to stand still or put still so that you can aim your ball towards them.

You are also going to need two smaller targets.

Now this could be some tins or some small toys and you're going to need something to time you.

So this might be good to ask someone else in your house if they can use their phone or a stopwatch to be able to time you.

By the end of today's lesson, I'm hoping that we can all throw underarm accurately and be able to keep your score correctly.

So today's keywords, we are going to do my turn, your turn.

My turn, "fairness," your turn.

Well done.

So fairness is when we play by the rules throughout the game.

You might have heard that word before or you might have played other types of games like board games or cards, or maybe some other games at school where you've had to show fairness and play by the rules.

Our second keyword, my turn, "accuracy," your turn.

Well done.

Accuracy is how close you get to the target when you throw or aim.

Really important for today's lesson.

And our final word, my turn, "tactic," your turn.

A tactic is a clever plan or idea to help you perform well.

I'm sure we're going to be using lots of tactics in today's lesson.

So I think it's time we get moving.

So we always start our PE lessons with a warmup to prepare our body for exercise.

And today's warmup, you're going to show what you know about throwing accurately.

So you're going to throw and catch an object as many times as you can without dropping it.

You could use a ball, a beanbag, or rolled up socks.

Your aim is to throw your object just above your head.

And following this, there will be a video to show you what is meant if you're unsure about how to do this warmup.

When you're doing a warmup, challenge yourself by beating your previous score.

So if you get five the first time, try and get at least six the second time you have a go.

And try and do as many throws and catches as you can in 30 seconds.

Could you change how you throw your object?

Those are things to think about when you are having a go at the warmup.

Watch this video now to give you some ideas and then have a go trying to beat your score.

Okay, well done for warming your body up.

I'm hoping you're ready for the lesson now.

Our lesson today is split into two parts.

In our first part, we're going to be looking at throwing for accuracy, and in the second part of today's lesson, we are going to be thinking about accuracy tactics.

Are you ready to start?

I am.

Let's go.

Lucas and Alex are discussing different types of throw.

Now, Alex has asked, "What type of throw is best to use if trying to be accurate over a short distance when aiming at a target?

" Do you know the answer to that?

Which throw should we use if we are just doing over a short distance?

Maybe Lucas can help us.

Lucas has said, "It's either underarm or overarm.

I think it's underarm.

" And Lucas is right.

It is underarm.

If we are inside the house and doing a short distance throw, we want to use our underarm throw.

Okay, now it's time for a check.

Have you been listening?

Which throw is best to use for accuracy over a short distance?

Is it A: a bounce throw?

Is it B: an underarm throw?

Is it C: an overarm throw?

Or is it D: a shoulder throw?

What do you think?

Okay, well done if you said B, an underarm throw.

When we are inside the house or doing a short distance throw, for accuracy, we want to use an underarm throw.

Well done if you got that correct.

So an effective underarm throw has five steps.

The first step is put one foot forward.

The second step is hold the object with the opposite hand.

So we can see in the video that the person has stepped forward with their left foot and they are throwing with their opposite hand, their right hand.

Swing your arm back low to high just like we can see in the video.

Look towards what you are aiming for.

Head is up straight, looking forwards, and judge when to release.

So you should release it when the ball is in front of your body.

Now try it with your other hand.

Can you practice without a ball or object to throw?

So let's have a practice first of all, without an object in our hand, just making sure our technique looks really good.

Here's an example of someone throwing it with their opposite hand.

Can you have a go at that too?

That might be a little bit more challenging.

Okay, now it's time for another check.

Which foot should you step forward with when doing an underarm throw?

Is it A: the opposite to throwing arm?

Is it B: the same as a throwing arm?

Or is it C: both feet?

Which do you think?

Well done if you said A.

You should step forward with the opposite foot to your throwing arm.

So if you're throwing with your right foot, you should step forward with your left leg.

If you're thrown with your left hand, you should step forward with your right leg.

Well done if you got that right.

Okay, another check for you now.

Which of the following is not a step for an underarm throw?

Is it A: swing your arm back?

Is it B: look at what you're aiming for?

Or is it C: always release the object when your hand is high?

Which do you think is not a step for an underarm throw?

Well done if you said C, always release the object when your hand is high.

In an underarm throw, we release the object when our hand is low, not when our hand is high because that would be an overarm throw.

So well done if you got that right.

Today, Alex is practicing alone at home, whereas Lucas is playing against his brother.

Alex says, "I'm going to play fairly on my own and be honest if the ball hits the target.

" He's not going to cheat, he's going to be honest, which shows that he's going to play fairly.

Lucas has said, "I'm going to play fairly by taking turns and playing kindly with my brother.

" That's really nice and really fair to take it in turns when you are playing with someone else.

I wonder if you are going to be playing on your own today at home or whether you've got someone else at home that you are going to play this game with?

Okay, now it's your turn to have a go at the throwing for accuracy challenge task.

So for this, you're going to need an object to throw, which could be a ball or a rolled up pair of socks.

You're going to need five targets.

Now the targets could be soft toys, shoes or books, and you're going to need a stopwatch or timer.

So what I'd like you to do is place five targets, which are the stars in front of you.

You might want to look at the diagram here to help you.

You're going to place a starting marker two steps back.

Throw your object towards the stars, and every time you hit a star, you remove the star that you hit.

Can you hit all five stars?

Now that's the challenge to see if you can hit all five stars when you're stood at the starting marker.

Use a stopwatch or timer.

What's the quickest time you can remove all your stars in?

So if you have a go the first time and maybe it takes you four minutes to get rid of all the stars, that's great, but then have a go again and see if you can do it a little bit quicker the second time.

I think you're going to be fantastic at this and I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on.

There's a video showing someone having a go at this task if you are unsure how to complete it.

So you might want to watch the video before pausing this and having a go at the challenge yourself.

Good luck.

Okay, let's reflect upon our task.

Did you perform an underarm throw accurately?

I bet you did.

Now Lucas has said, "I tried to follow the five steps concentrating on where I released the object.

" So he worked really hard to perform his underarm throw accurately.

What happened to your tactics and your success when you started timing yourself?

Lucas said, "The quicker I went, the harder it was to hit all the targets.

" I wonder if you noticed this difference when you were trying to be quicker the second time or third time you practiced this game?

Sometimes being quicker isn't always better.

It doesn't mean that we always hit the targets.

So it's up to you to decide the speed at which you are aiming your ball or socks accurately.

Did you keep trying your best even if you found it hard?

Now Lucas said, "I found it tricky at first, but I didn't give up" And I hope you didn't give up too.

Maybe you didn't hit them every time and that's okay, but if you missed it, then maybe you picked up your ball again and had another go because that's showing really good resilience and not giving up.

So well done if you did that.

Did you play fairly and only take a star when you hit it?

Lucas said, "There were lots of times the objects were close to the stars, but I only took a star when it was a direct hit.

I tried to play fairly.

" And I hope you did too.

Whether you were playing on your own or with someone else, I hope you were really honest about whether your ball or rolled up socks hit the target.

So well done if you showed fairness in that way.

Okay, now we're onto the second part of today's lesson.

In this part of today's lesson, we're going to look at accuracy tactics.

So a tactic is a clever idea that can help you perform well or beat an opponent.

In this game, you'll have to think about your tactics when choosing which stars or targets to aim at.

Alex said, "I'm going to aim for the closest targets first.

" So I wonder if you are going to have the same tactics as Alex?

It is always important to keep trying your best even if you find it hard, as this will lead to success.

Playing fairly and by the rules ensures that you can keep your score correctly.

Alex has said that "Even if I miss the targets, I'm going to keep trying my best because this will help me succeed.

" And he's right.

So even if you miss your targets, please don't give up.

Please keep trying because you will improve your underarm throws the more you practice.

Okay, now it's time for a check.

Were you listening?

What is a tactic?

Is it A: A game?

Is it B: a rule?

Is it C: a clever plan or idea?

What do you think?

What is a tactic?

Well done if you said C.

A tactic is a clever plan or idea and these usually help us win at games and help us have more success.

So well done if you got that correct.

Okay, another check for you.

Why is it important to always try your best?

Is it A: to succeed?

Is it B: to always win?

Or is it C: to never win?

What do you think?

Well done if you said A, to succeed.

It's important to always try your best so you have more chance of succeeding.

Well done.

Okay, now it's your turn to have a go at the second task of today's lesson.

For this task, you're going to need one extra target, which could be a soft toy, a shoe or a book.

This game is called the Planets and Stars game.

So the first thing you're going to do is place an object that's a different shape or color in the middle of your five stars, and this is known as the planet.

You have five throws to score as many points as possible.

Each time a star is hit, leave it in one place and score one point.

If the planet is hit, you don't score any points.

So you are really trying not to hit the planet but to only hit the stars.

How many points can you score with five throws?

Here is an example of how you can set it up.

Remember, you're trying not to hit the planet in the middle but trying to hit any of the stars on the outside.

So remember, you don't remove the stars if you hit the stars, but you have five goes to hit as many stars as you can.

Once you have completed that part of the task, you are going to move on to the second part of this task.

So with this one, you need two extra, smaller stars, which could be tins or small toys.

So this time the planet and stars game has superstars.

So I'd like you to add in two more stars known as superstars.

These stars should be smaller and they're worth two points, not just one point like normal stars because they're superstars, they're worth two points.

You can have five throws to score as many points as you can.

Which stars will you aim for?

The normal stars, the superstars?

But remember, you're trying not to hit the planet.

How can you think tactically to score maximum points?

Can you keep your score fairly?

So remember, I don't want to hear about you cheating.

It's only if your ball or socks hit the stars or superstars that you get the points.

You might want to set up your game just like this.

Purple are the normal stars.

Pink is a planet that you don't want to hit and green are the superstars that are worth the two points.

There is a video now showing you the part A and part B games so that you can have a watch to make sure you know the rules.

Once you've watched the videos, press pause and have a go at this game.

See how many points you can score with five throws.

Good luck.

Okay, let's reflect on our second task.

Did you use an accurate underarm throw in this task?

Alex said, "I was accurate because I used a low to high swing with my arm and put my opposite foot forwards.

" Did you?

Did you use a low to high swing and were you accurately able to do an underarm throw to hit any of the stars or superstars?

Did you think tactically about which star to aim for?

Alex said, "I aimed for the nearest star first, then worked my way around.

" That's a really good tactic to do.

Did you do that one or did you choose a different tactic?

Maybe when we added the superstars, you perhaps aimed at them because they were worth more points.

Did you keep trying, even if you found it hard at first?

Alex said, "Even when I missed the stars, I kept trying my best.

" And I really hope you did too.

It doesn't matter if you miss because you can just have another go.

So I hope you kept trying to make sure you tried to hit the stars.

And did you play by the rules fairly and keep your score correctly?

Alex has said, "When I played against my sister, we kept each other's score.

" Now that's a really nice and fair way to do it, to make sure that you're being honest with the scoring.

Now, whether you were with someone at home or on your own, I hope that you were honest about when your ball hit the stars or superstars.

Well done if you showed fairness with that.

Okay, we are nearly at the end of today's lesson, but before we finish, it's really important that we work together to do a cool down.

For this cool down, I would like you to move around the space slowly.

Using your ball or socks, every five seconds, stop still and throw the ball up as high as your head, then catch it.

While you are doing this, you might want to reflect on today's lesson.

Whilst you are moving slowly into the space, think about how you were successful when using an accurate underarm throw.

Which stars did you aim for and why?

And I'm going to set you a little commitment challenge as well.

What could you do between now and the next lesson to practice your skills further?

What do you think you could do?

So to summarize today's lesson, you were asked to show an accurate underarm throw, performing it with the opposite foot forward to the throwing arm and a low to high swing.

Now, did you do that?

You had lots of practice too, so I'm sure you did.

You were asked to think.

Tactics are decisions that you make to ensure that you can score maximum points.

Now, particularly in those last games, did you use your tactical thinking and your brain to think about how you were going to score lots of points.

Connect: keeping the score correctly shows fairness.

So did you keep your own score correctly or keep someone else's score correctly?

Because if you did, you showed fairness.

And did you try your best, even if it was hard?

Because this will lead to success and enable you to enjoy the activity.

I bet you did and you didn't give up, even when you maybe missed one of the stars, you kept going.

I think you've worked really, really well in today's lesson and I hope you've had some fun along the way.

I've really enjoyed being your teacher today and I'm really looking forward to our next lesson together.
