<v ->Hi there,</v> welcome to your next remote learning lesson on "An introduction to target games.
" Today's lesson is called "Accuracy: Can you throw accurately with increasingly difficult challenges?
" Now, my name's Ms. Hacking and I'm really looking forward to being your teacher today.
So for this lesson, you are going to need some equipment.
You're going to need an object to throw, which could be a ball or a rolled up pair of socks, for example.
You're also going to need six targets.
Now, your six targets could be something like your soft toys, shoes, or books.
So you might want to pause the video now to go get all the equipment you need for today's lesson.
By the end of today's lesson, I'm hoping that we can vary the power that you apply to your throws in order to accurately strike targets at varying distances.
Let's have a go at today's keywords.
We'll do my turn, your turn.
My turn, accuracy, your turn.
So accuracy is how close you get to the target when you throw or aim.
And next keyword, my turn, throw, your turn.
So throw means using your hands to send the ball through the air to a specific target area.
And our final keyword, my turn, concentration, your turn.
So concentration is the ability to focus your attention on a task, activity, or goal while ignoring any other distractions going on.
So I wonder how well your concentration is doing today.
Before we start today's lesson, it's really important that we perform our warmup, and in today's warmup you're going to show what you know about throwing accurately.
You're going to set up a range of targets in spaces around the room using cuddly toys, books, or cushions, or something else that you might have around.
Move around these with a ball or rolled up socks in your hand, and every 10 seconds try and hit one of the targets by throwing accurately.
Challenge yourself to hit all the targets at least once.
And try and hit the targets when you're not so close to them.
Could you change how you throw your object?
Now there is a video showing now of how to perform the warmup, so maybe watch the video, then pause, and have a go at warming yourself up.
So today's lesson is split into two parts.
In the first part of today's lesson, you're going to be throwing accurately over a short distance.
And in the second part of today's lesson, you're going to be throwing accurately but over a longer distance.
Are you ready to start?
Let's get going.
So, Sofia and Jacob are working on their accuracy by throwing over a short distance.
To accurately throw the ball, we use an underarm throw.
You stand with the opposite foot forward.
So if you're holding the ball with your right hand, for example, you want to step forward with your left foot.
And if you're holding your ball with your left hand, you want to step forward with your right foot, the opposite foot.
You always keep your eyes on the target that you're aiming for and follow through with your hand after releasing the ball, just like on the video you can see.
Jacob's reminded us that underarm throws are used for shorter, more accurate throws, especially inside the house.
Okay, let's have a quick go at a check then.
True or false?
It's best to use an overarm throw for short distances inside the house.
Is that true or false?
Well done if you said false, but can you tell me why?
So underarm throws are used for the shorter, more accurate throws, especially inside the house.
So underarm throws are used for shorter throws, overarm throws would be used for longer throws, maybe outside the house.
Sofia said, "The targets we're aiming at are very close.
What amount of power do you think we should use?
" So if the targets are really close.
Jacob said, "If the target is close, we only need to throw gently.
Using a small amount of power helps us aim better and hit the target.
" So if you are aiming for a target that is quite close by, you don't need too much power in your throw.
To throw underarm with only a little bit of power, use a very small backswing, moving your throwing arm back only a tiny bit.
So we don't need to swing all the way back, we only need a little backswing if we're doing with a little bit of power.
Keep your throwing arm relaxed.
So we don't need to be really extended, we can have a nice, gently relaxed throwing arm.
You take a small step, so with the opposite foot you would take a small step, not a big one.
And you'd move your arm slowly, not too fast.
And you'd aim by pointing your non-throwing hand at the target and then throw gently.
So that's if you are aiming at a target that is close by.
Always remember to concentrate and look at the target throughout because that will help your accuracy too.
Okay, let's have a go at a quick check.
To throw over a shorter distance with less power, what should you do?
Would it be A, take a big backswing?
Would it be B, swing your arms really fast?
Would it be C, take a big step?
Or would it be D, take a little backswing?
What do you think, to throw over a shorter distance with less power?
Well done if you said D.
D, take a little backswing would mean that you would throw with less power.
Whereas if you took a big backswing, you swung your arms really fast or you took a big step, you might end up adding more power and that would be better for a longer distance throw as opposed to a short distance throw.
Okay, now it's your turn to have a go at the first task of today's lesson.
You're going to place four targets using cushions or teddies a short distance away from you.
Put another object down to show where you start.
Throw a ball or some rolled up socks at the targets and see how many you can hit in three minutes.
If you hit a target, move it to another spot close by.
And when you finish, try again and see if you can beat your score.
There is a video showing now of how to complete this task if you're a little bit unsure.
So watch the video, then pause and have a go at completing the task with some really accurate underarm throws.
I bet you'll be really good.
Move, successfully throwing towards targets that are at different distances requires varying levels of power.
And Sofia said that "I used less power as I was throwing over a short distance.
" And if you were throwing over a short distance too, I'm hoping that you remembered to use less power.
Think, apply more or less power to a throw based on the distance of the target requires concentration.
And Sofia said that "I applied less power to my throws as the targets were close by.
" And I hope you did too, that you used concentration to think, "My targets are quite close by, so I'm not going to use a lot of power.
" Connect, fairness enables us to keep the score and play by the rules, and Jacob said that "I was honest and only counted the times my ball hit the target, so I knew the score I was trying to beat the second time.
" And I hope you were honest with your score-keeping too.
Okay, let's move on to the second part of today's lesson, throwing accurately over a longer distance.
Sofia and Jacob now want to challenge themselves by throwing accurately over a longer distance.
So now their targets are a bit further away.
Sofia said, "For this activity, I'm going to work in my garden because there is a bit more space.
" And Jacob said that "I'm going to continue to work in my house, but I'm going to be very careful when throwing things over a longer distance.
" So if you are staying in your house to do this task, make sure that you're really careful not to hit anything or break anything in your house.
Jacob said, "Because I'm working inside the house, I'm going to continue to use an underarm throw but over the longer distance.
This is so that I can keep the ball or socks under control and I'm less likely to hit something I shouldn't.
" So that's really sensible, so well done, Jacob, for being sensible.
Jacob said that "I will use the same technique for my underarm throw as before, but I will add more power to the throw by swinging my arm back a little bit further, by stepping forward with a bigger step this time, moving my arm faster when I throw, and pushing the ball forward strongly with my hand, using my whole body and not just my arm.
" So stepping forward and using his whole body will help him throw over a longer distance and get a bit more power.
Okay, now it's your turn for a check.
How could we add more power to a throw?
Would it be A, taking a smaller step?
Would it be B, swinging your arm back more?
Would it be C, to just use your wrist?
Or would it be D, swinging your arm back slower?
Which one would add more power to a throw?
Well done if you said B, swinging your arm back further or more would generate more power for you to throw a longer distance, so well done if you said that.
Sofia said that "because I'm working outside the house, I have lots of space in my garden and I'm going to use an overarm throw over a longer distance.
Overarm throws are often better over a longer distance because they help the ball to travel further with more power.
" So, to accurately throw an overarm throw, point your non-throwing hand at the target, look at the target before you throw, bring your throwing arm back, step forward with the opposite foot and release the ball, but this time you're releasing the ball above the shoulder.
So that's how you do an accurate overarm throw if you're outside of the house.
Okay, quick check then.
When performing an overarm throw, you should step forward with your opposite foot.
Is that true or is that false?
Well done if you said that's true.
Can you tell me why?
Yes, well done if you said that this helps to balance your body when throwing and increases your power and accuracy.
So stepping forward with your opposite foot is important in both the overarm throw and the underarm throw, so well done if you got that right.
So it's important, whether you're working indoors with an underarm throw or outdoors with an overarm throw, that you include more power than you used earlier in the lesson.
So remember to add more power by swinging your arm back a little bit further, stepping forward with a bigger step this time, move your arm faster when you throw, push the ball forward strongly with your hand, and use your whole body, not just your arm.
So that leads us onto our next task of the lesson, our Task B.
For this task, you're going to set up six targets.
Two that are close, two at the middle, and two further away, just like Jacob's done on his diagram.
Your aim is to hit all of the targets.
Remember to change the power of your throw depending on how far away the target is.
So the targets that are closer, you would need less power.
The targets that are further away, you would need more power.
Once you hit a target, you can remove it from the playing area, and time how long it takes you to hit all the targets, then try again and see if you can beat your score.
So you're trying to remove all the targets by throwing accurately with the right amount of power.
There's a video demonstrating this game next if you're a little bit unsure, so watch the video and then pause and complete the task.
Okay, let's reflect on our second task of the lesson.
Move, successfully throwing towards targets that's at different distances requires varying levels of power.
And Sofia said that "I used more power when aiming for the targets further away.
" And I hope you did too, I hope you varied the power depending on which target you were aiming for.
So the ones close by, you maybe used a little bit of power, and the ones further away, you used more power.
Think, apply more or less power to a throw based on the distance of the target requires concentration.
And Sofia said that "I applied more power to a throw that was aiming at a target further away.
" So I hope you used your concentration to make sure that you were using the right amount of power depending on which target you were aiming for.
Feel, successfully throwing towards targets that are further away requires self-belief to keep trying.
And Jacob said that "I showed self-belief by attempting to hit the targets further away.
" Yes, because that's harder to hit, the targets further away, so you did need a bit of self-belief to make sure that you were able to keep going and have a go at hitting the targets that were further away.
Connect, fairness enables us to keep the score and play by the rules, and Jacob said that "I was honest and only counted the times my ball hit the target so I could try and do it quicker the second time around.
" And I hope you were honest at keeping your score and you only removed the target from the game when you hit the target, so well done if you demonstrated honesty and fairness today and played by the rules.
So we're nearly at the end of today's lesson, but before we finish we are going to need to do a cool down.
So for the cool down, I'd like you to create a target in your space, collect your ball or socks and hold them as you walk slowly around all the space.
Every five seconds, stop still and perform an underarm throw and see how close you can get it to your target.
Whilst you're moving slowly within the space, think about how you were successful when using an accurate throw.
Which actions were more controlled?
And what could you do between now and the next lesson to practice your skills further?
Pause the video now so that you can complete your cool down.
And finally, we're going to summarize today's key learning points.
Move, successfully throwing towards targets that are at different distances requires varying levels of power.
Think, apply more or less power to a throw based on the distance of the target requires concentration.
Feel, successfully throwing towards targets that are further away requires self-belief to keep trying even if we miss a target the first time.
And connect, fairness enables us to keep the score and play by the rules.
And I hope that you were really honest with your scoring and you only played the game to the correct rules, so well done if you did that.
Now, I hope you've had lots of fun practicing your different types of throwing over different distances in today's lesson.
I really enjoyed being your teacher and I hope to see you again soon.
