Welcome to your next remote learning lesson on designing competitive games.
Today's lesson is called "Games: Can You Create a Competitive Game Aiming to Control the Ball?
" My name's Ms. Hacking and I'm really looking forward to being your teacher today.
So for this lesson, you are going to need some equipment.
So you'll need a ball that bounces.
So this could be a big ball like a netball or a basketball, or it could be something a bit smaller like a tennis ball.
You're going to need a timer, which you could use a smart device or a phone for.
You're going to need an implement to bounce a ball with.
So something maybe like a book that you can bounce the ball with or maybe something else like a tennis racket or a bat.
You may need a wall or a partner.
And you're going to need some markers so things like books or cushions could be used as markers.
And you might need your optional own equipment.
So when it comes to designing your own target game, you might want to add in more equipment that you want to use to create your game.
So by the end of today's lesson, I'm hoping that we can all create a competitive game to develop ball control skills that can be replicated by others.
So today's keywords are skill.
A skill is competence and finesse in carrying out an action.
Control is to keep possession of the ball by using appropriate force, timing, and body position so you can move, change direction, or perform a skill without losing a ball.
And dribble means moving with the ball while keeping it close and under control with your hands or feet.
So those are today's key words.
Before we start today's lesson, it's important that we perform our warmup.
So for our warmup today, I'd like you to show what you know about dribbling accurately.
So using your hands, dribble the ball as many times as you can with your right hand without losing control.
Repeat with your left hand, repeat then with your feet, and then repeat again but now move while you're dribbling without knocking into anything in your room.
Challenge yourself to beat your best score and try to dribble for the full minute without losing control.
There is a video showing next that may help you if you're a little bit unsure on how to perform the warmup.
So today's lesson is split into two parts.
In the first part of today's lesson, you're going to be looking at controlling a ball in different ways.
And in the second part of today's lesson, you're going to be creating a competitive game.
Let's get started.
So there are different ways you can control a ball so that you maintain possession.
Can you think of any ways to control a ball?
So you might have said, throwing, rolling, kicking, dribbling with hands, feet, or an implement.
So to control the ball effectively, it means we should keep the ball close enough to maintain possession, use the appropriate amount of force, and be able to change speed and direction without losing control.
So to accurately throw the ball, use an underarm throw, stand with your opposite foot forward, keep your eyes on the target and follow through with your hand after releasing the ball and move the ball from low to high.
Jun's mentioned that we use underarm throws for shorter, more accurate throws, especially if we're throwing inside the house as we don't want to hit anything or damage anything in the house.
So to accurately kick the ball or rolled up socks, you can stand with your non-kicking foot next to the ball, look at where you want the ball to go, and swing your kicking foot to hit the middle of the ball.
Keep your eyes on the ball as you kick it, as it might not go straight if you look up before you finish, follow through with your leg to help the ball go straight.
So particularly if you're aiming the ball to be accurately hit towards a target, it's important that you follow through with your leg in a direction where you want the ball to go.
So to roll the ball with accurate technique, get low by bending your knees, swing your arms straight and low like a pendulum swing, use a gentle controlled push with your fingertips, and keep your eyes on the target.
Point your hands and body towards the target so the ball rolls straight.
So that's important when you're aiming to roll the ball accurately.
Okay, now it's your turn for a check.
Can you show me a way in which you could control a ball when aiming towards a target?
So you might have demonstrated throwing, particularly under arm throwing, kicking the ball, or rolling the ball towards a target.
So well done if you demonstrated any or all of those three.
So another way in which we can control the ball is by dribbling.
So to accurately dribble a ball with your hands, use your fingertips, not your palm to push the ball down, keep the ball close to your body, push the ball with controlled, even force, and keep your head up to keep an awareness of space and others.
Now that one's particularly important if you're dribbling inside the house so that you are aware of any furniture so that you are not going to crash into anything or damage anything in the house.
So to accurately dribble the ball with your feet, you want to use small controlled touches with the inside and outside of your foot.
Keep the ball close to your feet, keep your head up to stay aware of space and others, and adjust the strength of each touch to keep control.
So ideally, you want the ball to remain close to your feet so that you are keeping control and possession of the ball.
So therefore you need to adapt the strength of each touch to make sure that you're not kicking it too hard so that the ball travels too far away from you.
So to accurately dribble a ball with an implement, whether that's a racket, a bat, or a book, you would use a relaxed but control grip to maintain consistent contact with the ball.
You adjust the force and angle applied through the implement to control the speed and direction.
Keep the ball within a controllable distance so you don't want it too far away from you, you want it nice and close.
And keep your head up to remain aware of space, opponents, and targets.
However, with that you do need to keep an eye on the ball as well.
So if you're stood still, concentrate on the ball.
But if you are moving around the space, do keep your head up so that you're not going to crash into anything.
Okay, quick check then.
Where should your head be facing when dribbling a ball with your hands, feet, or an implement?
Would it be A, the floor?
B, the ball?
Or C looking up?
What do you think?
Yeah, well done if you said C.
When dribbling the ball, your head should be looking up just so that you aren't going to crash into anything in your space.
So well done if you said that.
Okay, now it's time for you to have a go at task A.
So for task A, if you're working with a partner, you're going to stand opposite each other.
You're going to see how many consecutive throws you can complete accurately without losing control of the ball.
Once completed, repeat the challenge using accurate kicks then rolls.
And then to develop your dribbling skills, take turns running out to your partner while maintaining control of the ball.
Complete the task dribbling with your hands, then your feet, and finally using an implement.
Which challenge did you score the highest?
And if you're working by yourself, you're going to see how many consecutive throws you can complete against the wall without losing control of the ball.
Once completed, repeat the challenge using accurate kicks, then rolls.
And then to develop dribbling skills, run out to the marker whilst maintaining control of the ball, return to your starting position without losing control and complete the tasks dribbling with your hands then your feet, and finally using an implement.
Again, which challenge did you score the highest?
There is a video showing now of a few of the examples of the task that you can complete if you're a bit unsure on how to do it, but I think you'll be really good at this activity.
Okay, let's reflect on our first task then.
Were we able to keep the ball close enough to maintain possession using the right amount of force because that supports ball control?
And Lucas said that I kept ball control and didn't drop or lose possession when throwing with a partner, though I was less controlled when using my feet.
Now I wonder which bits you were better at, you were more controlled at.
Was it using your hands or your feet?
Was it dribbling or was it throwing?
Which bit were you more controlled at do you think?
Think, choosing the right ball skills and adapting them to different challenges requires concentration.
And Sofia said that I practice different ball skills, adapting them to the ability of my partner.
Now you have practiced, if you did all of the tasks, you practiced different ball skills and I wonder whether you found some easier or harder or you were able to complete them all or whether you worked with your partner or whether you worked against a wall.
Feel, overcoming challenges while maintaining control builds confidence and determination.
And Lucas said that I used determination to beat my best consecutive rally kicking the ball against a wall, under control.
So yes, that did show determination and I wonder if you showed any determination when you completed the task.
And finally connect, imagining how actions would affect others in a game and adjusting the ball skills creates opportunities.
Sofia said that as I was working with a partner to get the highest rally, I adjusted my ball skills to make it easier for them to control.
So again, she was kind to her partner because she was trying to get the highest rally.
If she was playing a different game where she was trying to beat her partner, maybe she wouldn't have been as kind.
So it is thinking about adjusting your actions or imagining how you would adjust your actions depending on the game you were playing.
Okay, we're now moving on to the second part of today's lesson where we're going to be creating a competitive game.
So Laura, Andeep, and Izzy want to make their own competitive target game, continuing to work on controlling the ball.
What target games could you base your game on?
So we might have played target games before or seen target games on TV.
So do you think you know any target games that you could base your game on?
You might have said tennis, squash, golf, battleships, or boules as examples of target games.
Laura and Andeep have decided that their game is going to be a bit like tennis.
So there'll be markers representing a net and their aim is to hit, throw, or kick it over the net.
The ball can bounce once.
The ball has to land inside the court they have marked out.
Their game will be played outside.
And Laura has said I need to concentrate to choose the right ball skills and adapt them to outwit Andeep.
So if they're playing sort of like kick tennis, throw tennis, it might be that Laura's kick is really powerful and that she can hit it right to the back line, the baseline of the court and helps her to outwit her opponent of Andeep.
Okay, quick question then, quick check.
What sports could you base your target game on using a ball?
You might have said any of the following, tennis, squash, golf, battleships, or boules, or you might have thought of one of your own examples of a target game.
So well done if you said any of those.
So Izzy has decided that her competitive game is going to involve getting a ball successfully around an obstacle course.
She would have different obstacles.
At different obstacles, she'll control the ball in a different way.
She will time herself completing the course and then repeat it to try and beat her time.
So Izzy's still being competitive even though she's playing by herself because she's trying to beat her original time.
She said that I need to use determination to beat my previous personal best time of this course.
And she does, especially when she's playing by herself.
She definitely needs to show determination to motivate herself to beat her personal best time.
Okay, quick question then.
When trying to beat your personal best, what should you demonstrate?
Would it be A, empathy to others?
Would it be B, you should give up as it's pretty hard?
Or would it be C, determination?
What do you think?
Yeah, well done if you said determination to try and beat your personal best, so the score that you've got the best at so far would require a lot of determination.
So well done if you got that right.
Okay, so now it's your turn to have a go at task B.
And in this activity you are going to be asked to create your own game that focuses on ball control using different ball skills.
So you should plan how the game will work, including how players will score points, how many times you can touch it, and if the ball is allowed to bounce, make sure the area you are using is safe with plenty of space and that there are no objects nearby that could be broken or cause harm.
So this gives you the opportunity to be as creative as you like, to make your game as interesting and as fun as possible as long as you are focusing on ball control using the different ball skills.
There is an example of a game that you could do if you're a bit unsure in the video next, but I bet you can be really creative in order to make your game really fun for yourself.
Okay, let's reflect on task B then.
So move, keeping the ball close enough to maintain possession and using the right amount of force supports ball control.
And Izzy said that when dribbling the ball on my obstacle course, I kept the ball close enough to enable that I maintain possession.
And I hope you did too.
So whatever game you created, I hope that you were able to control the ball really accurately.
Think, choosing the right ball skills and adapting them to different challenges requires concentration.
And Izzy said that depending on the obstacles, I adapted my ball skills to enable a more effective way around the obstacle.
So maybe you did that too.
So maybe you adapted the skill you were using in order to either outwit an opponent If you were playing with someone, or in order to gain a better advantage in the game that you created.
So well done if you did that.
Feel, overcoming challenges whilst maintaining control builds confidence and determination.
And Laura said that I kicked and threw the ball over the net into space using determination to try and beat Andeep.
And again, whether you were trying to beat your personal best or whether you were trying to outwit an opponent, you needed to demonstrate determination and confidence to be able to beat them.
Connect, imagining how actions would affect others in a game and adjust ball skills creates opportunities.
And Laura said that I use various ball skills, adjusting them to make it harder for Andeep to control the ball.
Okay, that leaves us just enough time left to cool down before the end of today's lesson.
So for our cool down, I'd like you to place a target such as a cushion or a ball in the middle of the space.
You're going to move around the space, dribbling the ball with either your hands, feet, or an implement.
Every 20 seconds, stop wherever you are and aim to send the ball towards a target with an accurate and gentle throw, hit, kick, or roll.
Whilst you're moving slowly within the space, think about how you were successful when using an accurate ball skill, which actions were more controlled, and what could you do between now and the next lesson to practice your skills further.
