Hi there, welcome to your next remote learning lesson on dance development.
Today's lesson is called Dance: Can You Accurately Replicate a Movement Sequence?
My name's Miss Hacking, and I'm really looking forward to being your teacher today.
And by the end of today's lesson, I'm hoping that we can accurately replicate a taught movement phrase and modify the rhythm to suit different music or styles.
Our keywords today, our first keyword is replicate.
Replicate means to copy, reproduce, or recreate something as accurately as possible.
Our second keyword is movement phrase, which is a short sequence of connected movements that express an idea, emotion, or story.
And our final keyword today is rhythm.
Rhythm is a repeated pattern of movement or sound.
Before we start today's lesson, it's important that we warm our bodies up.
So for our warmup today, we are going to show what you know about performing actions with control.
I'd like you to move around the room to music.
You can move however you would like to.
Try and move to the beat of the music, so you can select any music you want, but trying to move to the beat of that music.
Every 30 seconds, move around the room in a different way, so keep changing the way in which you move around the room.
Can you challenge yourself to move in time with the beat of the drum of the song?
And can you move within the room at different levels?
Can you try it high, medium, and low?
If you're not sure how to do this warmup or like some ideas, there's a video next to show you how you might do the warmup, but it is open to interpretation, and you can move however you want to move.
So you might want to pause a video now so that you can warm yourself up.
Okay, today's lesson is split into two parts.
In the first part, you're going to accurately replicate a movement sequence.
And in the second part of today's lesson, you're going to modify the rhythm to suit different music.
Let's get started.
To replicate something means to copy, reproduce, or recreate something as accurately as possible.
And Jun said, "So if I performed a movement and you copied it, that would be replicating it.
" Izzy said, "Yes.

Izzy said, "Yes, often movement phrases work in counts over eight.

" So this time it's going to be a little bit more tricky because it's going to be movement phrases are a sequence of movements together.
So not just one movement we're trying to replicate, but a sequence of movements.

Sometimes replicating movement phrases can be tricky, so it does require concentration and self-determination.
Izzy said, "I want to practice it a few times to ensure I perform most successfully and keep improving.
" Yes, sometimes if we just copy it once, it might not be our best performance.
So it's always useful to practice our movement phrases a couple of times at least to make sure that we're really performing it as best we can.

What you're going to do is watch the person on the screen performing a movement phrase.
You're going to begin by carefully observing a full sequence from start to finish.
Note their timing, speed, levels, and body position.
You're going to replicate the movement phrase by copying each action as accurately as you can.
Try to match the performer's control, dynamics, and rhythm.
After completing the phrase once, repeat the entire sequence at least twice, aiming to improve your precision and confidence each time.
Focus on performing a phrase smoothly from beginning to end.

And Jun said that, "I repeated the replicated movement phrase to ensure I improved.
" And I bet you did too.
I bet you didn't just practice it once.
You maybe repeated it two or three or even more times so that you were really precise and accurate with the quality of your performance.

Okay, now it's time to move on to the second part of today's lesson.
We're going to modify the rhythm to suit different music.
The rhythm is a repeated pattern of movement or sound.
And Jun's asked, "Shall we try replicating movement phrases but to different rhythms of music?
" Izzy said, "Yes, that sounds fun, though it will require self-determination and practice to make sure we're in time with the rhythm of the music because it might change.
" So that's important, so we've got to use our ears and listen really carefully to the rhythm of the music to make sure that we are in time.

I wonder if you can now practice a movement phrase in time with the rhythm of this music.
(upbeat music) Okay, how did the rhythm and timing compare to the first time you practiced it without the music?

Was it slower?
Now I've got another piece of music that I'd like you to practice a movement phrase in time with.
And I wonder if you notice any difference between the first piece of music and the second piece of music and how you move.
Maybe you change the timing or you change the rhythm of that movement phrase.
(upbeat music) As we like to count in counts of eight, it is helpful to find the beat by counting one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight because our movement phrase was in a group of eight, so well done if you did that.
What were the differences between the different pieces of music in how we performed our movement phrase?
Was one slightly faster, one slightly slower?
Did we want to express our movements a bit more with different types of music?
It's really interesting how we can modify our dance to suit different styles and different types of music.
So just have a think now.
Or if you're with someone else, can you discuss or think about, how does a rhythm of your dance change from the first piece of music to the second piece of music?

Okay, now it's your turn for the second task of today's lesson.
You're going to modify the rhythm to suit different music.
So what you're going to do is using a movement phrase you've replicated in task A.
You're going to perform a sequence to three different songs of your choice.
You can pick any songs that you wish.
Start by listening carefully to the first song and noticing its speed, beat, and timing.
Adjust your movement so they match the rhythm of the music.
For example, move slowly to a slow song or move quickly to a fast song.
Repeat the movement phrase with each of your three chosen songs.
Practice in changing the rhythm of your dance to suit the timing of the music.

So you might want to watch the video, then pause so that you can try performing your movement phrase to three different pieces of music of your choice.

If you used three different pieces of music, your dance, your movement phrase of dance would've looked slightly different with each one because you were responding to the music and how their movement phrases would change dependent on the music.
