Hi there!

Welcome to your next remote learning lesson on games making.

Today's lesson is called Games: Can you Roll a Ball with Accuracy and Adjust your Tactics?

My name's Miss Hacking, and I'm really looking forward to being your teacher today.

So for this lesson, we're going to need some equipment.

The first and most important thing you're going to need is an object to throw, which could be a softball or maybe a rolled up pair of socks if you don't have a ball with you right now.

You're going to need six targets, which could be toys or empty bottles or cans, for example.

You might need a pen and paper to write down your score, or you could put do this on a tablet or a smartphone, and you are going to create your own game as well.

So you might need to pick some of your own equipment to help make your target game more interesting.

So by the end of today's lesson, I'm hoping that we can all roll a ball at a target and adjust your tactics based on different scenarios that you come across.

So our keywords include technique, which is a method we use to perform a task; pendulum, which is the swinging of your arm straight back and forth, and strategies which are plans for achieving success.

Before we start today's lesson, it's important that we warm our bodies up so we are ready for exercise.

So for today's warmup, I'd like you to show what you know about rolling accurately.

So you're going to place a cushion in the center of the space, roll a ball or rolled up socks towards the cushion.

And every time you hit the cushion, move to a different starting point in the room so you're not always starting from the same place.

Challenge yourself to hit the cushion a certain number of times in one minute and try to hit the cushion from further away.

Could you use your other hand to roll the objects so you're not always using the same hand to roll the object?

Maybe try and use the other hand too.

There is a video showing now of how you complete this warmup.

So you might want to watch the video, then pause so that you can warm yourself up.

Okay, today's lesson is split into two parts.

In the first part of today's lesson, you're going to be looking at rolling the ball accurately.

And in the second part of today's lesson, you're going to be creating your own game rolling at targets.

Let's get started.

So today Jacob is working by himself and Aisha is working with her friend Sophia.

They are working on rolling accurately using either a softball or rolled up socks.

To roll the ball with accurate technique, get low by bending your knees.

If possible, try and get your knees all the way down to the ground.

Swing your arms straight and low like a pendulum swing.

Use a gentle controlled push with fingertips.

Keep your eyes up on the target that you're aiming for and point your hands and body towards a target so the ball rolls straight.

So it's important that when you have completed your pendulum swing that your arm, your hand, and your body are facing towards a target just so the ball rolls straight.

So, let's have a quick check then.

Can you show me the correct rolling technique?

So I'm hoping that you showed me a rolling technique by getting low and bending your knees, swinging your arm straight and low like a pendulum swing, using a gentle controlled push with your fingertips.

Your eyes were up at the target and you pointed your hands and body towards the target so that your ball rolled straight.

So I'm hoping that is what you demonstrated.

Well done if you did.

So Aisha and Sophia are playing a game of Skittles.

They have made a triangle with six targets and marked a starting line with a piece of string.

They both have two turns to knock down as many targets as they can.

After their turn, they put the targets back where they started to be ready for their partner.

So they're trying to knock down as many Skittles as they can taking it in turns.

Aisha said that my strategy is to aim for the middle target and roll the ball quite hard to hopefully knock more down.

Whereas Sophia said, my strategy is to adjust the angle of the swing by starting at a different position on the line so I can hit more targets down from the side.

I wonder what your strategy would be in this game of Skittles.

So they both have 10 turns to knock over the Skittles.

They write down how many they knock over in each turn.

Here are their scores.

So you can see in different turns they knock over different amounts.

But overall, Aisha knocked over 28 and Sophia knocked over 24.

So actually Aisha knocked over more and she would've won the game.

Okay, a quick check then.

How could you adjust your swing to enable more accuracy and control to hit more targets?

Would it be A, you would adjust the angle of the swing; would it be B, you would adjust the speed of the swing; or would it be C, you would adjust the height of the swing?

What do you think to enable more accuracy and control to hit more targets?

Well done if you said A.

By adjusting the angle of the swing like Sophia did as her tactics in the Skittles game, you would be able to accurately hit more targets.

So well done if you said A.

So Jacob is also playing Skittles.

He's playing against himself to try and beat his previous score.

Each time he resets his Skittles, he gets two rolls.

He has 10 turns to try and knock over as many Skittles as possible.

And like Sophia and Aisha, he counts his total.

After each turn, Jacob stands the skittles up and rolls again.

Jacob said that my strategy is to ensure my technique is effective by keeping the ball low to the ground and bending my knees.

I will need to throw with enough power to knock more Skittles over in one go.

Yeah, so it's important that we're accurate, but it's also important that we're throwing with enough power so that the Skittles or the objects that we are using do roll over.

Aisha said to be able to knock the targets over, you might need to use a bit more power than normal.

And to add more power, you need to think about swinging your arm back a little bit further, stepping forward with a bigger step and moving your arm faster when you roll.

So if like Jacob, you wanted to add more power, these are the things you need to do to your roll.

And Sophia's mentioned that if we're inside, we must be careful not to roll too fast or hard, which could knock other things over.

Yeah, we do need to be mindful of our surroundings and make sure that we are being safe when we're rolling on the floor.

All the children wanted to play again.

Sophia and Aisha are challenging themselves to roll the ball accurately with their non-dominant hand this time.

Jacob also wants a more challenging game.

He wants to achieve a higher total score than last time.

He's going to change his strategy and use different angles to roll the ball and knock more targets over.

So they've both decided that they want to make it a bit harder for themselves.

So now it's your turn to have a go at the game.

If you are playing today with a partner or someone else, you are going to do this version.

Make a triangle with six targets, one at the front, then two with three at the back.

Targets can be toys or empty cans or plastic bottles.

Take two turns each to knock over as many targets as possible.

After your two turns, pick up the targets and put them back where they started.

Write down how many targets you knocked over in each turn.

After 10 turns, add up your total score.

Repeat the game changing your strategy to try and find more success.

So that's if you are with a partner.

Now, if you're on your own, you're going to play solo Skittles.

So again, you're going to make a triangle with six targets, one at the front, then two with three at the back.

Targets can be toys or empty cans or plastic bottles.

Roll the ball and count how many rolls it takes to knock over the targets.

When they're all knocked over, stand the targets up and start again.

Try to knock them all over using fewer rolls than before.

So again, each turn, write down how many you knock over and see if you can improve your score each time.

Now there is a video showing now of how to perform this game if you're a little bit unsure, but if you know what you're doing, you can pause the video, set up your Skittles and enjoy rolling accurately.

Okay, let's reflect then on task A.

So move: a smooth pendulum swing and a low body position improves accuracy.

And Aisha said that I perform my rolls with low body position getting down close to the floor so I was able to aim more accurately.

Now I hope you did too, that you used an accurate, smooth pendulum swing and that your body was low to the floor.

Adjusting your swing will modify power and angle to control distance and accuracy.

So Jacob said the second time I play Skittles, I rolled the ball from different angles, which helped me be more successful at knocking over the Skittles.

Now I wonder if adjusting your swing and the angle of your swing helps you to be more successful too.

And connect: challenging yourself or others to a repeat performance raises levels of competition.

And Jacob said that I repeated my game as I wanted to improve my score the second time.

And I hope you did too.

I hope you played it more than once so that you tried to beat your score or your partner's score.

Okay, time to move on to the second part of today's lesson.

We're going to be creating our own game rolling at targets.

So Aisha, Sofia and Jacob have now decided that they want to create their own target game.

The focus is still to work on accurately rolling the ball.

So Sophia and Aisha have decided that their game is going to have targets worth different amounts of points, including some targets that mean you lose points.

So not all the targets are good.

They're going to have obstacles that they have to roll around to make it harder.

So it's not just.

.

.

To hit them, they have to roll around targets, that sounds quite interesting.

And they finish the game when someone gets to 10 points.

And Sofia has mentioned that to be successful in our game, we need to use strategy to gain advantage over the other person.

And it sounds like they will because they'll need to think about which obstacles are going to go around and which obstacles they're going to try and avoid because they don't want to lose points.

So there's definitely going to have to be some strategy there.

And Jacobs has decided that his game is going to use objects that he has to roll the ball into, like balls or cushion tunnels or shoe boxes.

Sounds fun.

He also is going to play it with his non-dominant hand, so he might find it easy, for example, rolling the ball with his right hand.

So he's gonna challenge himself to use his other hand, his left hand for example.

And the game is going to be progressed by every time he completes a round he's going to play again, but rolling from a further distance away.

So he's thought about how he's going to adapt it to make it harder each round.

That sounds really challenging and great at improving his rolling.

Jacob's also said that I must remember to use a low and smooth pendulum swing to improve accuracy.

And he does, especially if he's rolling from further away.

Okay, now it's your turn to have a go at the check.

What rules might you include in a rolling target game to make it more fun?

Have a think.

So you might have said that you'd have targets that are worth different points.

You might have said that there'd be different distance targets, so maybe you'd have to roll some from further away.

You might say that you'd play with your non-dominant hand to make it a bit harder and more challenging.

You might put obstacles down to roll round or you might have the opportunity to eliminate an opponent's targets as well.

So these are all examples of ways that we could make a game more fun.

Jacob said that I like to repeat my game as the more I practice the more accurate I become.

It gives me satisfaction to be more consistent in my rolling technique.

And that's good and I hope you do too.

The fact that the more you practice in today's lesson, the more you practice at rolling, and the more accurate you will also become.

Okay, let's have a go at another check.

Why can it be useful to repeat a game having played it once?

Is it A, so the game lasts longer and fills up more time?

Is it B, repeating a game makes it harder every time?

Or is it C, it helps to practice skills so you can improve accuracy, consistency?

What do you think?

Well done if you said C.

It's useful to repeat a game having played it once because it helps you to practice the skills so that you can improve accuracy and consistency.

So well done if you said C.

Okay, now it's your turn for task B.

And in this task you are going to create your own target game that involves rolling from different distances and positions.

You should plan how the game will work, including where the targets will be placed and how players will score points.

You need to make sure the area that you are using is safe with plenty of space and that there are no objects nearby that can be broken or cause harm.

Now you can be as creative as you want and make your game as fun as you wish with the different rules.

There is an example next of a game that someone is demonstrating, but I think you will be able to creatively come up with your own version of a rolling target game.

So have fun.

Okay, let's reflect on task B then.

So move: a smooth pendulum swing and low body position improves accuracy.

And Jacob said that in my own game, I continue to use a low pendulum swing when rolling the ball to help increase my accuracy.

And I hope you did too.

I hope that was the focus of your game was to ensure that your rolling technique was really accurate through that smooth pendulum.

Think adjusting your swing will modify power and angle to control distance and accuracy.

And Aisha said that modifying my power was a strategy I used to accurately roll at targets over different distances.

So I'm hoping that you were able to adjust your swing or modify your power to enable your game to take place effectively and for you to be successful at your game.

Feel: satisfaction comes from being able to predict and achieve consistent results.

And Jacob says, as I repeated my game, I gained satisfaction from being more consistent with my roll in technique.

And I hope you felt like you have become more consistent with your rolling technique too.

The more you practice throughout the lesson of the different games, I'm hoping that you have gained that satisfaction and been more consistent with your accuracy.

And finally, connect: challenging yourself or others to repeat performance raises levels of competition.

And I just said that I repeated my game as I wanted to improve my score the second time and to beat Sophia.

So, were you able to challenge yourself to practice and keep repeating the game so that you really improved and that maybe you beat your own personal best score or you beat an opponent?

Well done if you managed to do that.

Okay, so before we finish today's lesson, we do need to complete our cool down.

So for our cool down, I'd like you to start at one side of the room.

Roll your ball or pair of socks to the other side of the room without hitting anything.

Gently move using big lunges to collect the ball or rolled up socks and roll it back to the starting position.

Repeat this three times.

And whilst you're moving and rolling a ball within the space, think about how you were successful when using an accurate roll.

Which actions were more controlled?

And what could you do between now and the next lesson to practice your skills further?

You might wish to pause a video now so that you're able to complete your cool down.

And that leaves us just enough time to summarize today's key learning points of the lesson.

So move: a smooth pendulum swing and low body position improves accuracy.

So well done if you throughout the lesson use that smooth pendulum swing and you also had that low body position as you were getting down towards your roll.

Think: adjusting your swing will modify power and angle to control distance and accuracy.

So again, were you able to modify your power and the angle of your swing to ensure that you were more accurate?

Feel: satisfaction comes from being able to predict and achieve consistent results.

And again, the more you practiced, the more consistent you should have become.

So hopefully you'll have found that quite satisfying.

And connect: challenging yourself or others to a repeat performance raises levels of competition.

So again, consistently practicing improving your technique and becoming better at your game meant that you were able to raise a level of competition either against yourself or your opponent today.

Now, I really enjoyed being your teacher today, and I hope you've had a fun lesson too.

I look forward to seeing you again soon.
