Hello, my name is Mrs. Clinton and I'm so pleased that you've joined me today for our lesson.

I'm here to help us with everything we're learning today.

Today's lesson is called The Story of Christmas, and it's from the unit Jesus: Why is he so important to Christians? And we'll be thinking about how we can explain why Jesus's birth stories are special to Christians.

Sometimes learning can be challenging and hard, but don't worry, that's why I'm here, and together, we're going to do all our learning today really well.

In our lesson today we have some key words.

Let's have a look at them now.

Let's do I say, you say.

So I'm going to say the word and then I want you to say it back to me.

So let's do our first word.

Nativity.

I say nativity, you say.

I say nativity, you say.

I say nativity, you say.

Well done.

Nativity refers to the birth stories of Jesus.

I say good news, you say.

I say good news, you say.

Good news is someone or something that's positive, encouraging, or and up lifting.

I say Jesus, you say.

I say Jesus, you say.

Jesus is seen by Christians as God's son and the person they follow as an example.

And our final word today, Bethlehem.

I say Bethlehem, you say.

Bethlehem.

Well done.

And Bethlehem is a small town in Palestine where Jesus was born.

We've got two learning cycles today.

The first one is what story is told by Christians at Jesus' birth? And the second one, what do Christians learn from the Nativity story? So let's get on with our first learning cycle.

What story is told by Christians at Jesus's birth? Aisha explains why stories are used in religious education.

She says, "Stories can help us understand different worldviews.

In religious education, we listen to important stories and think about the deeper meanings of these stories to different people.

We can also look at the difference the stories make to people today." So in this lesson, we'll be using the Nativity story to better understand Christian worldviews about the birth of Jesus.

This is Sophia and she has a Christian worldview.

She attends an Anglican church with her family.

Now, Sophia tells us, "Christmas is a very special time for my family.

We get to celebrate Jesus' birth through telling the Nativity story as this story is good news." Shall we hear this special story? "Mary was a young woman.

It had been arranged by her family that she would very soon marry a man called Joseph.

One day whilst at home, an angel appeared to Mary and Said, 'Good news.

God is sending someone special into the world.

He will be a great king.

His name will be Jesus.

And guess what? God wants you to be his mom.

' Later, an angel visited Joseph.

'Good news.

God is sending someone special into the world.

He will rescue everyone from the wrong things they have done.

He'll be God's own son.

But guess what? God wants you to marry Mary as your wife and raise the child Jesus as your own.

' Now the rulers of their country wanted to count how many Israelites there were living there and ordered everyone to return to their hometown.

Joseph said to Mary, 'Bad news.

We need to take a trip all the way to Bethlehem and with the baby due soon, I hope it will all be okay.

' 'Bad news,' said the innkeeper, shaking his head.

We don't have any rooms left in Bethlehem at the moment.

We're so full with people coming back here.

But as your wife is very near to having your baby, I can let you stay with my animals if you haven't got anywhere else to go.

'" True or false? The innkeeper allowed Joseph and Mary to stay in his inn.

Is that true or false? You might like to talk to the person next to you or think for yourself which is the right answer.

Pause the video and when you have got your answer, come back.

Welcome back.

Shall we have a look and see what the answer is? The innkeeper allowed Joseph and Mary to stay in his inn.

Is that true or false? It's false.

And why? The innkeeper had no room in his inn for Joseph and Mary to stay, but he did allow them to stay with his animals.

Well done if you got that right.

Let's hear some more from our story.

"'Good news,' smiled Joseph, handing Mary the baby.

'It's a boy.

Just as the angel told us.

God's own son.

We will call him Jesus, which means "God saves."' 'Good news,' called the angel to the shepherds on the hills outside Bethlehem.

'God has sent someone special into the world.

He is the someone you've been waiting for.

Go now to Bethlehem and you can see the saviour of the world for yourself.

' He's just a baby now, wrapped warmly and lying in a manger in Bethlehem, but one day he will save everyone.

' Then, the night sky was filled with a choir of angels, all singing praises to God.

The shepherds went to Bethlehem and searched for the baby lying in a manger, and were very excited when they found him.

Mary and Joseph stored up this visit.

It proved to them that their baby Jesus was indeed special.

He was the Saviour of the world." I have a question for you.

Which of these images shows an image of Jesus? Is it A, B, or C? Have a think and share your answer with a partner.

You might like to pause this video while you have your discussion.

Welcome back.

Shall we see what the correct answer was? Which of these images show an image of Jesus? And it was: B.

Very well done if you got that right.

I'm very proud of you.

Now I have a task for you to do.

Could you write what you think Joseph is saying to Mary at the birth of Jesus in the speech bubble? Use the picture to help you.

You might like to do this on your own, or you might like to work in a small group or with a partner.

Whilst you do that, pause the video and then come back when you've done the task.

Welcome back.

I wonder how you got on.

Well, you can see this speech bubble.

We've got Joseph saying, "Mary, God's promise to us is true! We have a son called Jesus who's God's son and he will save people." Well done if you had something similar to that.

That's excellent work.

We are going to go on to learning cycle two now.

What do Christians learn from the Nativity story? Let's listen to more of the Nativity story.

"A long time ago, a long way away from Bethlehem, some very clever people were studying the stars.

They discovered a very exciting promise written in ancient books and in the stars: Someone was coming, someone extra special, a new king.

Then, the very clever people packed their bags and rode off and followed the special star in search of the very special king.

After a very long journey taking many years, the clever people were nearly at the end of their journey.

They had travelled across mountains and hills, rivers and seas, following the special star until they finally reached Bethlehem.

This is where their books and their special star they had followed told them the new king would be born.

They searched all of Bethlehem looking for the new king.

And when they found the house where Joseph, Mary, and Jesus lived, they bowed down to the young boy, Jesus, the new king.

Then they offered him their gifts of glimmering gold, fragrant frankincense, a mysterious myrrh to the new king.

Mary treasured the visit and the gifts the clever people brought for her new son." I have a question for you.

The clever people visited Jesus when he was A, a baby, B, a young boy, or C, a grownup man.

Have a conversation with the person next to you and pause this video while you do that and come back to me when you've thought about your answer.

Welcome back.

Shall we see what the answer was? The clever people visited Jesus when he was a young boy.

Yes, it took them many years after they first saw the star, a bit like the shepherds on the night of Jesus' birth.

But they took all those years to reach Bethlehem.

So Jesus had grown up a little bit and was a young boy.

Sophia explains how Christians might understand the gift of gold.

She says, "When Jesus was born, it was normal for people to give the gift of gold to a new king.

So when the clever people gave Jesus the gift of gold, they were saying Jesus was a king." David has a Christian worldview.

He attends an Anglican church too, just like Sophia.

David explains how Christians might understand the gift of frankincense.

"The clever people gave the gift of frankincense to Jesus because it was sweet smelling." Mm.

"And it's a symbol for connecting humans with God.

This is what Jesus would do in his life, He would connect people with God." So Jesus has had two special gifts so far, one, gold, about being a king, and two, frankincense, about connecting people with God.

Now there's another gift.

Can you remember what it was? Yes.

Here we are.

Danielle has a Christian world view and attends a Catholic church.

Danielle explains how Christians might understand the gift of myrrh.

The clever people gave myrrh as a present.

It's a heavy perfume that was used when people died.

It was a sign that Jesus would die and that his death would be important.

I have a question for you.

Which of these gift boxes has a special gift for Jesus inside of it? Is it A, B, or C? Have a talk to the person next to you and you might like to pause this video to let you do that.

Welcome back.

Shall we see what the answer was? Which of these gift boxes has special gift for Jesus in it? And it is B.

Well done if you got that.

Now I have a task for you.

Use one of the sentence starters below to explain what Christians might learn from the Nativity story in your own words.

You could use as your sentence starter, "Christians learn through the Nativity story that Jesus.

." or, "The clever people gave the young boy the gift of.

." "This gift showed that Jesus was.

." Pause this video to give you some time to write your answer or talk about your answer with a partner or maybe work in a small group.

Welcome back.

Now, I asked you to use one of the sentence starters to explain what Christians might learn from the Nativity story using your own words.

So your answer might have looked like this.

"Christians learned through the Nativity story that Jesus was the son of God.

He had an amazing birth, a very special birth, and he had lots of special people come to visit him." Or you could have used the second sentence starter, "The clever people gave the young boy the gift of gold.

This gift showed that Jesus was the new king." Well done if your answer looked like either of these two.

I'm very proud of your thinking and your understanding about what Christians learn from the Nativity story.

So let's look at what we've learned today about the story of Christmas.

Well, the Christmas story is known as the Nativity story and it's a good news story.

The angel Gabriel appeared to tell Mary she would give birth to a baby boy called Jesus and he would be God's son.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem and shepherds attended his birth and clever people from the East visited him sometime later.

The story of Christmas helps many Christians to understand who Jesus is.

Well, thank you for being with me.

I hope you've enjoyed our lesson.

I've really enjoyed looking at the Nativity story and thinking about its meanings.

I'm going to say goodbye now, but I hope to see you again soon.

Goodbye.
