Hello, my name's Ms. Ramalli, and welcome to today's RE lesson, which forms part of our unit on Jesus.
"How did He speak truth to power?" Today's lesson focuses on interpreting teachings on wealth today.
Okay, let's start today's lesson.
Today's lesson outcome is I can explain Jesus' teachings on wealth and how Christians put this into action.
To help guide us through today's lesson, there are four key words, campaign, debt, justice, and wealth.
Campaign is a series of planned actions carried out in order to reach a particular goal.
Debt is something you owe to someone else, usually money that you need to pay back.
Justice, to be treated fairly and with dignity by all people, including those in power.
And wealth is the money, possessions, resources, and opportunities a person has.
Today's lesson on interpreting teachings on wealth today takes two parts.
We're going to start by exploring what was Jesus' attitude towards wealth and move on to consider what do these teachings mean for Christians today? Aisha explains what we mean by theology in religious education.
Theologians are interested in stories, texts, and traditions.
We can better understand people's worldviews by examining what the deeper meaning of these stories, texts, and traditions are.
We can also look at the difference they make to people today.
In this lesson, we will be using the tools of theology to better understand how different Christians interpret Jesus' teachings on wealth.
Jacob wants to know more about the meaning of wealth and Christian attitudes towards it.
He speaks to Fergus who has a Christian worldview and attends an Anglican church.
Lucas asks, "What does wealth mean? and who influences your attitude towards it, Fergus?" Fergus replies, "Wealth is the money, possessions, resources, and opportunities a person has.
My attitude towards wealth is influenced by the teachings of Jesus." Let's check your understanding of the meaning wealth.
So what is the meaning of wealth? A, to be treated fairly and with dignity by all people, including those in power, B, something you owe to someone else, usually money that you need to pay back, or C, the money, possessions, resources, and opportunities a person has.
Pause the video and press play when you're ready to see the correct answer.
Well done if you selected C as the correct answer.
The meaning of wealth is the money, possessions, resources, and opportunities a person has.
Lucas asked Fergus, "What does Jesus teach about wealth?" Fergus replies, "Wealth is also one of the most common themes of Jesus' teachings.
Jesus taught a well-known parable called 'The Rich Man and Lazarus.
' This parable demonstrates Jesus' attitudes towards wealth." This is a picture illustrating the parable of "The Rich Man and Lazarus." I would like to look at this picture in more detail and answer the questions, what different things can you see in the picture and what do you think might be happening? Pause the video here and press play when you're ready to reflect on your answers.
Welcome back everybody.
Fantastic discussions.
So perhaps you identified different things in the picture as you have different people, you have some animals, so you might see the dogs there.
You can see that there's food on the table, and that some people in the picture are dressed quite grandly.
Perhaps you noticed in the background that there was some musicians playing, so perhaps that indicates what you think might be happening.
So perhaps you identified that there is some kind of feast or a party, but did you notice here the man on the right-hand side at the bottom of the image? This man is not dressed the same as the other people.
What do you think might be happening there? Well, let's take a look.
Lucas asks, "What does a parable of 'The Rich Man and Lazarus' teach christians, Fergus." Fergus replies, "A rich man lived in luxury.
Lazarus was a man living in poverty.
He sat outside the rich man's home hoping for scraps of food, but the rich man always ignored him." So this is a picture of Lazarus, and it shows him living in poverty and waiting for food, but being ignored.
Were you able to identify Lazarus in that illustration? Well done if you could.
Which person in the picture do you think might represent the rich man? So perhaps you identify that it is the man sat on the far left-hand side of the table in what looks like to be very fancy clothing.
Let's pause and complete a check for understanding.
In the parable, who ignored Lazarus? A, Jesus, B, the rich man, or C, the poor man.
Pause a video and press play when you're ready to see the correct answer, Well done if you selected B as the correct answer.
In the parable, it is the rich man who ignores Lazarus.
Lucas asks, "What happened to the rich man and Lazarus, Fergus?" Lucas asks, "What happened to the rich man and Lazarus, Fergus?" Fergus said, "when they both died, Lazarus was comforted in heaven while the rich man ended up in a place of suffering.
The rich man asked for help, but it was too late." Lucas asks, "Why did Jesus teach the parable of 'The Rich Man and Lazarus,' Fergus?" Fergus replies, "One reason Jesus told this parable is to show that how we treat others, especially those in need, matters more than how much wealth we have.
One message is that wealth isn't bad, but being selfish and ignoring those who need help is wrong." True or false, in the parable of 'The Rich Man and Lazarus' Jesus taught that wealth is bad.
Pause the video and press play when you're ready to check your answer.
Well done if you said that statement is false.
Why is that statement false? The parable does not teach that wealth is bad, but being selfish and ignoring those who need help is wrong.
Jesus told this parable to show that how we treat others, especially those in need, matters more than how much wealth we have.
Lucas asks, "What other teachings does the parable have, Fergus?" Fergus replies, "Another teaching of the parable is to show the importance of justice.
Justice means to be treated fairly with dignity by all people, including those in power.
Jesus wanted his followers to see that every person deserves justice.
Every person matters, no matter how poor or unnoticed they are." Okay, let's check your understanding of the meaning of the word justice.
Is it A, to be treated fairly and with dignity by all people, including those in power, or B, a series of planned actions carried out in order to reach a particular goal, or is the meaning of justice C, something you owe to someone else, usually money, that you need to pay back? Pause a video and press play when you're ready to see the correct answer.
Well done If you said the correct meaning of the word justice is A, to be treated fairly and with dignity by all people, including those in power.
Fergus explains how Jesus spoke truth to power through the parable of 'The Rich Man and Lazarus.
' Fergus tells us Jesus spoke truth to power through the parable of the rich man and Lazarus by challenging the beliefs and behaviours of the wealthy religious leaders of his time.
Many of them saw wealth as a blessing from God and believe people living in poverty were less important.
Fergus explains more, "In this parable, Jesus challenged that idea.
The rich man who seemed blessed in life ends up suffering while the poor man, Lazarus, is comforted in heaven.
By telling this parable, Jesus boldly challenged those in power who were greedy, proud, and uncaring.
He made it clear that God cares deeply about justice, mercy, and how we treat the vulnerable, not about wealth or power in society." True or false.
in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, Jesus taught that God cares about justice.
Pause a video and press play when you're ready to check your answer.
Well done if you said this statement is true.
Why is this statement true? Well, in the parable of "The Rich Man and Lazarus," Jesus makes it clear that God cares deeply about justice, mercy, and how we treat the vulnerable.
So now we're gonna pause and complete our first practise task.
Use this image to explain Jesus' attitude towards wealth.
Include these key words in your answer, the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, wealth, selfish, and justice.
Good luck completing the practise task.
Pause the video here and then press play when you're ready to check your answers.
Welcome back, everybody.
So let's check your answers for the first practise task.
Your answer could include these following points.
in the parable of "The Rich Man and Lazarus," Jesus teaches that wealth is not the most important thing in life.
The rich man was selfish.
He had lots of wealth, but he didn't care about helping Lazarus, a poor man who was suffering right outside his door.
After they died, the rich man was punished and Lazarus was rewarded.
Jesus was showing that God cares about justice.
Jesus taught people to be kind, share what they have, and help others in need.
Being rich isn't wrong, but being selfish and ignoring others is.
Well done on completing the first practise task.
So now we're gonna move on to the second part of our lesson on interpreting teachers on wealth today by considering what do these teachings mean for Christians today.
Lucas wants to investigate how Christians today might be influenced by Jesus' attitude towards wealth.
He's going to interview three people who have a Christian worldview, Niamh, who attends a Roman Catholic church, Asher, who attends a free church, and Brother Sam, an Anglican Monk.
Lucas asks Niamh, "How did Jesus' teachings on wealth influence you?" Niamh replies, "The teachings on wealth influence me to buy Fairtrade products.
Fairtrade is an organisation that ensures farmers and workers in developing countries receive a fair price for their goods and better working conditions.

To identify Fairtrade products, Look for the Fairtrade mark on packaging.
True or False.
Fairtrade ensures farmers and workers in developing countries receive a fair price for their goods.
Pause the video and then press plate when you're Ready to check your answer.
Well done if you said That statement is true.
Fairtrade is an organisation that ensures farmers and workers in developing countries receive a fair price for their goods and better working conditions.
It sets minimum prices, ensuring farmers can cover costs and improve living standards.
Niamh explains more about how Jesus' teachings on wealth influence her.
Niamh tells us, "One way that I'm influenced is by being involved in the Jubilee 2025 campaign.
This is a global movement that my church is involved in.
The campaign calls for the cancellation of debt, particularly debt owed by low income countries.
Debt is something owed to someone else, usually money, that you need to pay back.
Pope Francis called for a Jubilee Year of hope in 2025.
Lucas asked Niamh, "Niamh, how are you involved in the campaign? What do you do? Niamh replies, "I'm engaged in charitable work such as helping those living in poverty.
I also support projects aimed at promoting social justice.
I've also written to my local MP to make him aware of the Jubilee campaign and raise awareness of debt relief." True or false, the Jubilee 2025 campaign calls for the increase of debt owed by low and middle income countries.
Pause a video and press play when you're ready to see the correct answer.
Well done if you said that statement is false.

Here Lucas speaks to Brother Sam, "How did Jesus' teachings on wealth influence you, Brother Sam?" He replies, "As a Christian monk, I choose not to own property or money.
Instead, I live simply and share everything with others.
This lifestyle helps me to stay focused on helping people, especially those in need.
I believe this helps me grow closer to God and follow Jesus' example.
Lucas asks Asher, "Asher, how did Jesus' teachings on wealth influence you?" Asher responds.
"I volunteer at my church on a Thursday evening." My church offers free money management classes run by experts from the organisation, Christians Against Poverty.
It helps members of my community seek free debt advice and support with budgeting money.
I volunteer by welcoming people on arrival and supplying hot drinks and biscuits.
Okay, let's pause and complete a check for understanding.
Which organisations offers free advice for anyone living with debt? A, Friends of the Earth, B, Christians Against Poverty, or C, Fairtrade.
Pause the video and press play when you're ready to see the correct answer.
Well done if you selected B as a correct answer.
The organisation which offers free advice for anyone living with debt is Christians Against Poverty.
So now we are going to pause and complete our second and final practise task.
I would like you to use these pictures and sentence starters as a prompt to write about how Jesus' teachings on wealth influence Christians.
So you're going to start by saying, "Organisations or charities that support Justice for Wealth are," "Examples of their work are," and "Many Christians follow Jesus' teachings on wealth by.
." Good luck completing the practise task.
Pause the video here and press play when you're ready to check your answers.
Okay, welcome back, everybody.
Time to check your answers.
So you might have written the following points, organisations or charities that support justice for wealth are Fairtrade and Christians Against Poverty.
