Hello, my name's Ms. Ramalli, and welcome to today's RE lesson.
In today's lesson, which forms part of our unit, "Jesus: how did he speak truth to power?", we are going to be exploring, interpreting the Good Samaritan today.
Okay, let's start today's lesson.
Today's lesson outcome is, I can explain how the Good Samaritan parable influences some Christians to stand up against injustice.
To help with our understanding in today's lesson, there are three key words: compassion, injustice, and parable.
Compassion means showing care and concern for the suffering of others.
Injustice means a lack of fairness.
And parable is a short story that usually has a deeper meaning.
Today's lesson on interpreting the Good Samaritan today takes two parts.
So we are going to begin by exploring the question, who was Oscar Romero and why is he important? Moving on, to consider how is one church influenced by Romero? Aisha explains what we mean by theology in religious education.
Aisha says, "Theologians are interested in stories, texts, and traditions.
We can better understand people's worldviews by examining what the deeper meaning of these stories, texts, and traditions are.
We can also look at the difference they make to people today." In this lesson, we will be using the tools of theology to better understand how the Good Samaritan parable influences many Christians today.
Let's pause and check your understanding.
Select two ways theologians might better understand people's worldviews.
A, by studying important religious texts, B, by interpreting the meanings of important stories, or C, by making assumptions about a particular worldview.
Remember, for this check for understanding, you need to select two answers.
Pause the video and press Play when you are ready to see the correct answers.
Well done if you selected A and B.
Two ways theologians might better understand people's worldviews is by studying important religious texts and by interpreting the meanings of important stories.
On your screen, you can see a painting, and what we are going to do now is explore the meaning of this painting.
So first of all, have a look at the painting and think about what can you see in the painting.
Think about these questions.
Why is the man dressed white and why does he have a gold halo? Who is the man holding? Can you find the helicopters? What do you like most about the painting? And how does this make you feel? With your partner or in a small group, discuss these questions.
Pause the video here and press Play when you are ready to reflect on your answers.
Welcome back, everybody.
Fantastic discussions.
Well done.
So now we're going to explore what we can see in this painting.
Well, this man in the painting is Oscar Romero, and he was a Roman Catholic priest.
He's painted here on an icon which can be found in a church in Bristol.
We can see he's special as he has been painted in white and has a gold halo.
The artist is telling those looking at the icon that he is important.
Who was able to see the helicopters in the painting? Fantastic, well done.
So in the background of the icon, there are government helicopters flying around, dropping explosions on people unjustly.
Oscar Romero is holding a child as he stood up for the vulnerable and tried to protect them from the government.
Well done if you were able to spot and understand some of the symbols in this icon.
Danielle has a Christian worldview and attends a Roman Catholic church.
Jacob wants to investigate how Oscar Romero was influenced by the Good Samaritan parable.
Jacob asks, "Danielle, do you know anything about Oscar Romero?" Danielle replies, "Yes! I learnt about him when studying A-Level religious studies at school.
He was inspired from the Good Samaritan parable to be compassionate and live for the poor." Jacob says, "Where in the world did Oscar Romero live?" Danielle replies, "In El Salvador in Central America.
He lived there over 40 years ago now.
This is where El Salvador is." So here you can see El Salvador is located in Central America.
Let's look a bit closer to see where El Salvador is.
So here you can see some neighbouring countries, Cuba, Belize, and Jamaica, and the location of El Salvador.
Oscar Romero was a Catholic priest who became the Archbishop of San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador.
During his time, the government treated people in his country unfairly.
He followed the example of the Good Samaritan parable and worked hard to help people who were suffering.
True or false? Oscar Romero was born in Belize, Central America.
Pause the video here and press Play when you're ready to check your answer.
Well done if you said that statement is false.
Oscar Romero was born in El Salvador, Central America.
Danielle explains more about Oscar Romero.
"During the time of Oscar Romero, El Salvador was a country where many people were treated unfairly.
The rich and powerful people had most of the money and land.
Whilst many poor families struggled to survive due to a lack of good jobs, homes, or enough food." Jacob asks, "What was it like living in El Salvador?" Danielle tells us, "There was a lot of injustice and violence.
The government didn't listen to the people who were asking for change.
When people tried to fight against injustice, they were often hurt, disappeared, or were killed by the government." Anyhow, how did Oscar Romero help people who were suffering? Danielle says, "Oscar Romero spoke out for the poor and tried to make the country a safer, fairer place for everyone even though this was dangerous.
He believed in showing compassion and helping others, just like Jesus did.
This made him a hero to many people." True or false? During the time of Oscar Romero, people in El Salvador were treated fairly.
Pause the video and press Play when you're ready to see the correct answer.
Well done if you said that statement is false.
During the time of Oscar Romero, El Salvador was a country where people were treated unfairly.
The rich and powerful people had most of the money and land.
Tragically, in 1980, Oscar Romero was shot dead because he spoke truth to power.
He criticised the government.
Oscar Romero was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1981 for his work on peace, justice, and human rights.
He was made a saint by the Catholic church and inspires many Catholics to protest against unjust power.
This is Niamh and she has a Christian worldview.
She occasionally attends a Roman Catholic church.
Niamh says, "At the church I go to, there is the Oscar Romero icon that you looked at earlier.
He's important to me as he stood up against injustice, even when it was difficult.
He taught that showing compassion means helping those who are suffering and don't have a voice.
This is how Jesus wants us to behave and to follow the example of the Good Samaritan." Let's pause and check you've understood what you have just heard.
How might Oscar Romero influence Christians today? Choose two correct answers.
A, by encouraging them to show compassion to all.
B, by encouraging them to stand up against injustice, or C, by encouraging them to stand up for injustice.
Remember, you're looking to choose two correct answers.
Pause the video and then press Play when you are ready to check your answers.
Well done if you said the correct answers are A and B.
Oscar Romero might influence Christians today by encouraging them to show compassion to all and by encouraging them to stand up against injustice.
In Central America, Christians often decorate crosses with bright colours and symbols to express an idea or feeling.
What you are going to do now for the practise task is you're going to decorate a cross.
You're going to use colours and symbols inspired from the story of Oscar Romero, and here is an example to show you on the screen.
Good luck, everyone, completing the practise task.
Pause the video and then press Play when you are ready to check your work.
Welcome back, everyone.
Fantastic work.
Well done.
So your drawing might have looked something like this.
So you can then say, I've drawn an image of Oscar Romero and added a cross above him because he was a Christian.
Then I added some images of the sun to symbolise light and hope.
So that's one way that you might have completed your cross inspired by Oscar Romero.
Fantastic work, everyone.
Well done.
So now we are going to move on to the second part of today's lesson by interpreting the Good Samaritan today by answering the question, how is one church influenced by Romero? Jacob wants to investigate how Christians today might be influenced by the Good Samaritan parable and the life of Oscar Romero.
He's looking at a case study of a church in Bristol.
He's going to interview Niamh, whose family attend the church.
Jacob asks Niamh, "How would you describe your family background and worldview?" Niamh replies, "My family originally came from Ireland to live in Bristol.
They started attending Saint Nicholas of Tolentino Catholic Church.
My grandparents still worship there.
I would say I had a Catholic worldview, but I don't go to church very often.
I'm very inspired by the work they do for justice." "Tell me about St.
Nicholas of Tolentino Church.
What is it like?" Niamh replies, "St.
Nick's is a Catholic church right in the middle of the city of Bristol.
Now it has a congregation of people with roots from all over the world.
Over 60 languages are spoken there.
The mission of the church is to focus on justice and compassion for the poorest in society." Okay, let's check you've understood what we've just heard.
What is the mission of St.
Nicholas of Tolentino Church? A, to speak 60 languages, B, to focus on justice for all, or C, to focus on justice for the poorest in society.
Pause the video here and then press Play when you are ready to check your answer.
Okay, well done to those people that said C is the correct answer, the mission of St.
Nicholas of Tolentino Church is to focus on justice for the poorest in society.
This banner hangs in St.
Nick's.
What does it say? What might the words mean? Pause the video here, and with your partner, or in a small group, discuss those two questions.
Press Play when you are ready to reflect on your answers.
Welcome back, everybody.
Some more fantastic discussions.
Well done.
Well, Niamh explains the image for us.
"This message hangs in the church so everyone can see it as they come in.
St.
Nick's believes that they must be on the side of people at the edge of society; and that refers to people that are forgotten and invisible.
There is a lot of injustice in the world, but St.
Nick's welcomes everyone." Jacob asks, "Does St.
Nick's connect this with the Good Samaritan parable?" Niamh replies, "I interpret the Good Samaritan parable to mean that we should not walk on by if we see someone in distress.
St.
Nick's refuse to walk on by.
We will raise our voices against injustice and treat people with compassion." Okay, let's pause and check our understanding.
How does Niamh interpret the Good Samaritan parable? You need to choose two correct answers.
A, that we should refuse to walk on by, B, that we should raise our voices against injustice, or C, that we should help people who have been attacked.
Remember, you're looking for two correct answers.
Pause the video and press Play when you are ready to see the correct answers.
And well done if you selected A and B as the correct answers.
This cross hangs on the wall of St.
Nick's.
What can you see here in the picture? What do you think it might be made from, and why do you think it might be on the wall of St.
Nick's? So again, what I would like you to do is pause the video and either in a group or with your partner, discuss those three questions.
Press Play when you are ready to reflect on your answers.
Welcome back, everyone.
Fantastic discussions.
So Niamh explains the image for us.
"This cross is made from a boat carrying refugees that was shipwrecked near Greece.
At the time of Jesus, Samaritans were seen as unclean and on the edges of society.
At St.
Nick's, we believe that refugees are treated unfairly and need compassion.
So we help raise money and provide food and clothing to refugees in Bristol." True or false? The congregation of St.
Nick's have a cross made of wood to remind them that refugees must be stopped.
Pause the video and then press Play when you're ready to check the answer.
Okay, well done if you said that statement is false.
Why is that statement false? Well, the congregation of St.
Nick's have a cross made from a boat to remind them that refugees need compassion and help.
These are both found in St.
Nick's Church.
What can you see in these photographs, and can you connect them together? Pause the video here and discuss what you can see in these photographs and see if you can connect the two photographs together.
Press Play when you are ready to check your answers.
Okay, welcome back, everybody.
So let's see what you can see in the photographs and whether or not you are able to connect the two photographs.
Well, St.
Nick's has an icon of Oscar Romero in the church, and the Paschal candle, which is lit at Easter, also has an image of Oscar Romero.
Well done if you are able to spot that connection.
Jacob asked Niamh, "Niamh, why is Oscar Romero so important to the congregation at St.
Nick's?" Niamh says, "Oscar Romero spoke truth to power.
He stood up against the injustice of the government of El Salvador.
At St.
Nick's, we aim to live out his example.
We stand up for the poorest and most vulnerable people in our society, like refugees.
We will not walk on by." Niamh tells us, "The candle has people who influence us on it.
All of them remind us that, as Christians, we follow Jesus and stand up for the poor, even if this is unpopular or it means others might disagree.
Like Oscar Romero, we aim to be lights in the world for others." So now we are going to pause and we are gonna complete a practise task.
Here are three images from St.
Nick's Church in Bristol.
What connections can you make between them to the Good Samaritan parable and Oscar Romero? How does the congregation bring light to others through their work? Okay, so what you're going to do is write a paragraph showing a connection with the image or images to the Good Samaritan parable and Oscar Romero, and then write a second paragraph explaining how the congregation at St.
Nick's brings light to others through their work.
Good luck completing the practise task.
Pause the video here and press Play when you're ready to check your answers.
Okay, welcome back, everybody.
So in your answer, you might have said something similar to this.
The cross made from a shipwrecked boat reminds a congregation to care for refugees.
It connects to the parable of the Good Samaritan, as in Jesus's time, Samaritans were on the edge of society like refugees today.
You may also have said something similar to this.
So the church has a banner with the words, "We will keep the doors of mercy open." Now, this shows how they try to welcome everyone and speak up against injustice.
It connects with Oscar Romero because he spoke up against injustice, and the church has a Paschal candle with an image of Oscar Romero on it.
Fantastic.
Well done on all of your hard work completing the practise task today.
So that brings us to the end of today's lesson on interpreting the Good Samaritan today and a summary of our key learning points.
The Good Samaritan parable influences many Christians to act with compassion.
Oscar Romero followed the example and teachings of Jesus and worked hard to help people in El Salvador, who were suffering.
Oscar Romero spoke truth to power.
He stood up against the injustice of the government of El Salvador.
Oscar Romero acted with compassion and tried to make El Salvador a safer, fairer place for everyone.
Some Christians are influenced to campaign and speak up for people that are facing injustice, and one example is St.
Nick's Church in Bristol, which focuses on justice and compassion for the poorest in society.
Fantastic.
Well done on all of your hard work.
Thank you very much for joining me in today's RE lesson.
Goodbye.
