Hello, my name is Ms. Wroth.
Today we're going to be looking at the lesson called Helping Others to Feel Welcome at School.
This fits into the lesson unit Communities: Who Is in My Community? So let's get ready to begin.
Let's get our eyes ready to look, our ears ready to listen, and our brains ready to do some thinking.
Today's lesson outcome is I can describe how to make our school welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together.
And we have some friends here to help us.
Laura says we should listen to others.
And that means we're not going to talk or interrupt when somebody else is speaking.
Andeep says we should respect privacy.
And that means if somebody decides to share a story or talk about their own experience, that we're not going to repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, "No judgments." And that means if somebody does decide to share a story or talk about their own experience, that we're not going to judge them or make comments because of it.
And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation." And that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout the lesson.
All of these ground rules are here to keep everyone safe in today's lesson.
Here are today's keywords.
I will read them first to you and then you can repeat them after me.
Are you ready? Inclusive.
Welcome.
Celebrate.
Well done.
Inclusive means making everyone feel welcome and part of the group no matter who they are.
To welcome someone is to happily invite them in and make them feel comfortable and as if they belong.
And celebrate means to praise someone for who they are or something they have done.
Let's see if we can spot these keywords throughout today's lesson.
Here is the lesson's outline.
And we're going to begin with why is including people a good thing? Including people is a good thing for lots of reasons.
For example, it helps everyone feel happy and cared for.
This man says, "No one likes to feel left out.
It can make us sad, lonely, or frustrated." Laura says, "when my friends include me in their games at lunchtime, I feel happy and know that my friends care about me." Andeep says, "I feel included and happy when my friends ask me questions about my weekend." Time for a check for understanding.
How does feeling included make people feel? Is it a, lonely, b, happy, or c, cared for? Hmm, how does feeling included make people feel? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said b and c.
Including other people can make them feel happy and cared for.
Including others helps people to make friends, like Lucas, Alex, and Laura.
Laura says, "When Alex invited me to sit next to him at lunchtime, it made me feel included and we became friends." Jacob says, "When I joined my new school, everyone made me feel included.
This helped me to make new friends." And Andeep says, "I felt worried about joining an after school club at my school, but everyone included me in their games and I made lots of new friends." Okay, time for a check for understanding.
Fill in the missing word in this sentence.
Including others helps people to.
Hmm, what could those missing words be? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said that the missing words were make and friends.
Including others helps people to make friends.
When we include others, we can have more fun, like Jacob and Laura.
Jacob says, "Laura always includes me in her games, and we have so much fun together." We can also learn new things from other people when we include them.
Laura says, "We all have different ideas, interests, and skills." Skills are things that we're good at.
And Jacob says, "When we include other people, we can discover new things." This is Mariam, Jeff, and Adam.
They're working together in a classroom.
Jeff says, "I love working with Adam at school.
He has so many brilliant ideas." Adam says, "I love being a partner with Mariam.
She solves problems in ways that I didn't think of myself." Okay, time for a check for understanding.
True or false.
We can learn new things from other people when we include them.
Put your hands on your head if you think it's true or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.
Hmm, we can learn new things from other people when we include them.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said true.
Time for a task now.
Mateo thinks including people is a bad thing.
Tell your partner two reasons why Mateo is wrong.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answer could include: Mateo is wrong because including other people helps them to feel happy and cared for.
Including other people helps them to make friends.
We can have more fun when we include others.
And when we include other people, we can learn new things from them.
Well done if your answer looks similar to mine.
We're now going to move on to the second and the final part of our lesson, how can we make everyone feel welcome? There are lots of ways that we can make others feel welcome and included.
Ms. Walsh says, "How do you make others feel welcome at your school?" Have a little think to yourself.
To make others feel welcome, we should listen to them when they're talking and use kind words and kind hands.
We should ask them questions to find out more about them.
And we should invite them to play with us.
Time for a check for understanding.
How can we welcome others? Is it a, by asking them questions, b, by ignoring them, or c, by inviting them to play with us? Hmm, how can we welcome others? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said a and c.
Some of the ways that we can welcome others is by asking them questions to find out more about them and by inviting them to play with us in our games.
Ms. Walsh says, "We should all try to make our school more inclusive.
Sometimes, this means making changes to our school to allow someone to get involved and feel included.
When school is inclusive, everyone can join in and do their best." Lucas says, "I use a wheelchair to move around.
My friends make playtimes inclusive for me by playing games that I can join in, such as basketball or hide and seek.
Alex says, "I wear glasses.
My teacher makes the classroom inclusive for me by letting me sit at the front of the carpet.
This means I can see the board clearly, just like everyone else." Sofia says, "I wear a cochlear implant to help with my hearing.
My friends make school inclusive for me by making sure they look at me when they are talking.
This helps me to understand them better." Time for a check for understanding.
Bill broke his arm at the weekend.
Tell your partner one thing his friends could do to make school more inclusive for him.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done for having a go.
You might have said: his friends could carry his bags or books for him, play different games that don't involve running, where he could hurt his arm even more, and ask him if he needs any help.
Some people incorrectly think we should only include people who are our best friends.
Ms. Walsh says, "It's okay to have best friends and it's okay to like some people more than others.
However, we should still work together to create inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome and can be a part of what's going on." Okay, time for a check for understanding.
True or false.
We should only include people who are our best friends.
Hmm, put your hands on your head if you think that's true or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.
We should only include people who are our best friends.
Hmm, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay, well done if you said false.
Now I would like you to have a little think to yourself and think about why this statement is false.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay, so this statement is false because it's important to include everyone so that they can feel welcome and be a part of what's going on.
To make our school more inclusive and welcoming, we should also celebrate everyone in our school.
This means noticing and valuing what makes each person special.
We can celebrate our different talents, cultures, languages, and ideas.
Ms. Walsh says, "Culture means the way of life for a group of people, including foods, language, music, and celebrations.
Alex says, "At school, we had a special Languages Celebration Day.
We celebrated all the languages that are spoken in our school, and this made lots of people feel included.
That sounds like great fun, Alex.
And Sofia says, "Every Friday, we have a special Celebration Assembly.
Different children are celebrated for their hard work during the week.
And this helps everyone feel special and important." Okay, time for a check for understanding.
Why is it important to celebrate other people? Is it a, so we can become popular at school, b, so people can feel special and important, or c, so we can get presents for working hard.
Hmm, why is it important to celebrate other people? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said b.
It's important to celebrate other people so that they can feel special and important.
Time for a task now.
First, I would like you to draw and label two pictures to show how we can make everyone feel welcome at school.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your pictures and labels can look like this.
We can welcome others by listening to them.
We can welcome others by using kind words and kind hands.
Or your pictures and labels could look like this.
We can welcome others by asking questions to find out more about them.
And we can welcome others by inviting them to play with us.
Well done if your answers are similar to mine.
For the second part of the task, with your partner, I would like you to come up with one idea that your school or classroom could do to celebrate pupils and make them feel welcome.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the possible answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your ideas could be something like this.
We could have a culture day where everyone brings in food from their family or show something special from their culture.
My friend could bring samosas and I could bring my nan's cookies.
This would celebrate all of our different families and welcome everyone to share what makes them special.
What a great idea.
Or your idea could be something like this.
Our class could make a Kindness Tree on the wall where we write notes about when someone was kind or helpful, like if someone helped you with your reading or shared their pencils.
This would be inclusive because everyone can write notes and everyone gets celebrated for being kind.
This brings us to the end of our lesson.
And I've had a wonderful time with you today.
Here is a summary of everything that we've covered in today's lesson.
Including people is a good thing for lots of reasons.
Including others helps everyone feel happy and cared for, and it helps people to make friends.
To make others feel included and welcome, we should listen to them, be kind, ask questions, and invite them to play with us.
Sometimes we need to make changes to our school or classrooms so that people can join in.
We should celebrate everyone at our school.
And we can celebrate our different talents, cultures, languages, and ideas.
This helps everyone to feel special and important.
Here is a slide of different places that you can get support.
We have the NHS websites, where the NHS provides advice about health and prevention, including how to access services.
We also have the Childline, which is a websites and phone line which is able to offer confidential advice and support.
