Hello, my name is Ms. Wroth.

Today we're going to be looking at the lesson, called "The things We Need to Feel Safe and Happy." This fits into the lesson unit "Communities, who is in my community?" So let's get ready to begin.

Let's get our eyes ready to look.

Our ears ready to listen, and our brain's ready to do some thinking.

Today's lesson outcome is I can describe the different things people need to feel safe and happy.

Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together, and we have some friends here to help us.

Laura says we should listen to others, and that means we are not going to talk or interrupt when somebody else is speaking.

Andeep says we should respect privacy.

And that means if somebody decides to share a story or talk about their own experience, that we are not going to repeat it to others outside of this lesson.

Jacob says, no judgement.

And that means if somebody does decide to share a story or talk about their experience, we are not going to judge them or make comments because of it.

And Izzy says, choose your level of participation, and that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout the lesson.

All of these ground rules are here to keep everyone safe In today's lesson.

Here are today's key words.

I will read them first to you and then you can repeat them after me.

Are you ready? Needs.

Different.

Respect.

Well done, needs are the important things we must have to live and grow.

Like food, water, a home, love and care.

Different means not the same as something else.

And respect means treating others kindly and valuing their feelings, ideas and boundaries.

For example, listening carefully and being polite even if you disagree.

Let's see if we can spot these keywords throughout today's lesson.

Here is the lessons outline, and we are going to begin with, what are needs? Hmm, What do plants need to grow tall, strong, and healthy? Have a little think to yourself.

Plants need water, light, soil, air, love and care from the gardener.

Food like plant food or fertiliser.

A pot or somewhere to live and warmth from the sun.

Ms. Walsh says, "Just like plants, people have things they need too! Needs are the things we must have to be safe and healthy.

And we all have the same basic needs." Our basic needs include food and water to keep our bodies healthy.

A safe place to sleep and live.

Clothes to keep us warm.

And feeling cared for and loved by friends and family.

Time for a check for understanding.

Using the pictures on your screen now, tell your partner two basic needs.

Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.

Well done if you said, feeling cared for and loved by friends and family and a safe place to sleep and live.

Our needs are different to the things we want.

Ms. Welsh says, "Things we want are things we like or wish for, but we don't need them to survive.

For example, the latest toys or games, we call these things wants." Okay time for a check for understanding.

Who is correct? Laura says, Things like holidays and the latest trainers are needs because they make us happy.

And Andeep says, "Things like holidays.

All the latest trainers are wants.

Because although they make us happy, we don't need them to survive." Hmm.

Who is correct? Laura or Andeep? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.

Well done if you said Andeep was correct.

Things like holidays or the latest trainers are wants because although they make us happy, we don't need them to survive.

Sometimes we don't always get what we want, and that's as long as we still feel safe.

Izzy says, "I really wanted to go to the new theme park at the weekend, but my parents said no.

I felt annoyed at first, but I know that what matters the most is that I feel safe and loved at home." Okay, time for a check for understanding.

True or false? It's okay if we don't always get what we want, especially if it means we still feel safe.

Hmm.

Put your hands on your head if you think it's true.

Or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.

Hmm, it's okay if we don't always get what we want, especially if it means we still feel safe.

Is that true or false? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.

Well done if you said true.

Okay, time for a task now.

First, I would like you to explain to your partner what needs are.

Then I would like you to explain to your partner what wants are.

And finally, I would like you to draw and label a picture of two basic needs.

Pause this video so you can have some time to do the tasks, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

So the first part of the task, I wanted you to explain to your partner what needs are.

And your answer could include, needs are the things we must have to be safe and healthy.

For the second part of the task, I wanted you to explain to your partner what wants are.

And your answer could include, wants our things we would like to have but that we don't need.

Well done if your answers were similar to mine and for the final part of the task, I wanted you to draw and label a picture of two basic needs.

And your pictures and labels could look like this.

Food and water to keep our bodies healthy and a safe place to sleep and live.

Or your pictures and labels could look like this.

Clothes to keep us warm and feeling cared for or loved by friends and family.

Well done if your answers look similar to mine We're now going to move on to the second and final part of our lesson.

Does everyone have the same needs? Ms. Walsh says, different people will need different things to help them do their best at school.

These needs are different to our basic needs.

Ms. Walsh says, "When all of our needs are met, including our basic needs, we can enjoy our time at school." Andeep says, "After each task, during a lesson, I need to go for a movement break.

This helps me to remember the information I have learned and helps me to concentrate better in the next lesson." Jacob says, "I'm different to Andeep.

I don't need movement breaks.

However, I do need a quiet classroom as this helps me to concentrate better on my learning." Robyn says, "To do my best at school, I need my own working station and a visual timetable to show me what I'm doing throughout the day.

This helps me to feel safe, calm, and ready to learn!" Aisha says, "I need to pray at certain times during the day.

This helps me feel calm and connected to my family's beliefs." And Sophia says, "I need to use my cochlear implants to help me hear clearly.

This helps me join in with lessons and talk with my friends." Okay, time for a check for understanding.

Fill in the missing words in this sentence.

Different will need different to help them do their best at school.

Hmm.

What could those missing words be? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.

Well, then if you said up the missing words where people and things.

Different people will need different things to help them do their best at school.

We should listen to and respect what people need.

Ms. Welsh says, "This means we should be kind, fair, and thoughtful to others.

We can help make our classroom and school a place where everyone's needs are respected.

At home, our families help respect our needs too, and we can help respect theirs." Ms. Welsh continues to say, "I know that Andeep needs to move around after each activity to help him remember what he learned and focus better.

I listen and respect his needs by letting him have movement breaks between our classroom activities." Andeep says, "Thank you, Ms. Walsh for respecting my needs." Laura says, "I know that Jacob needs a quiet classroom to concentrate better at school.

I listen to and respect his needs by making sure I talk quietly during lessons." Jacob says, "Thank you, Laura, for respecting my needs." Jacob says, "I know that Robyn needs her own working station and visual timetable.

I listen to and respect her needs by not putting my things on her working station and by not touching her visual timetable." Robyn says, "thank you, Jacob, for respecting my needs." Time for a check for understanding.

We should A, listen to what people need.

B, respect what people need.

Or C, ignore what people need.

Hmm.

Which of those is the correct answer? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.

Well done if you said A and B, we should listen to what people need and respect what people need.

Time for a task now.

We're going to read the two scenarios together, and then I would like you to highlight what each person needs.

Yaz says, "I need to sit near the front of the class so that I can see and hear properly." Max says, "I need people to give me space and not touch me, as this can make me feel uncomfortable." So for the first part of the task, I would like you to highlight what each person needs.

Pause this video so you can have some time to do the first part of the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

Your answers should look like this.

You should have highlighted in Yaz's example, sit near the front of the class as this is what she needs.

And in Max's example, you should have highlighted, people to give me space and not touch me.

And this is what he needs.

Well done if you got that correct.

For the second part of the task, I would like you to tell your partner how Ms. Walsh would listen to and respect Yaz's needs.

Yaz says, "I need to sit near the front of the class so that I can see and hear properly." So how could Ms. Walsh listen to and respect Yaz's needs? Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go, your answer could look like this.

Ms. Walsh would listen to and respect Yaz's needs by letting her sit near the front of the class in different lessons.

She could also ask Yaz if there were certain places in the classroom that would work best to help her with her learning.

Well done if your answer is similar to mine.

And for the final part of the task, I would like you to tell your partner how you would listen to and respect Max's needs.

Max says, "I need people to give me space and not touch me, as this can make me feel uncomfortable." So how would you listen to and respect Max's needs? Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

Your answer could look like this.

I would listen to and respect Max's needs by giving him space and not touching him.

Instead, I could smile or wave to show him that I like being his friend.

Well done if your answer looked similar to mine.

This brings us to the end of our lesson, and I've had a wonderful time with you today.

Here is a summary of everything that we've covered in today's lesson.

Needs are the things that we must have to be safe and healthy.

Basic needs include food and water, a safe place to live and sleep and feeling loved and cared for.

Our needs are different to the things we want.

Sometimes we don't always get what we want, and that's okay as long as we feel safe.

Different people will need different things to help them do their best at school.

When all of our needs are met, including our basic needs, we can enjoy our time at school and at home.

We should listen to and respect other people's needs.

Here is a slide of different places that you can get support.

We have the NHS website.

Where the NHS provides advice about health and prevention, including how to access services.

And we have the Childline, which is a website and phone line, which is able to offer confidential advice and support.
