Hello, my name is Miss Roath.
Today we're going to be looking at the lesson called "Managing Conflicts in Healthy Ways".
This fits into the lesson unit Emotions.
How can I manage my emotions? Now, in this lesson, we are going to be talking about the different ways that ways can manage conflicts with other people.
So let's get ready to begin.
Today's lesson outcome is I can describe how to handle conflict in a positive way.
Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together, and we have some friends here to help us.
Laura says, we should listen to others, and that means we are not going to talk or interrupt and somebody else is speaking.
Andeep says we should respect privacy, and that means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, that we're not going to repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, no judgement , and that means if somebody does decide to share a story or their own experience, that we're not going to make comments or judge them because of it.
And Izzy says, choose your level of participation, and that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout today's lesson.
All of these ground rules are here to keep everyone safe in the lesson.
Here are today's key words.
We have conflict, disagree, frustrating and calm.
Conflict means when people don't agree about something and have different ideas about what should happen.
Disagree means to have a different opinion from someone else.
Frustrating means something that makes you feel a little annoyed or upset.
And calm means feeling peaceful and relaxed with no big emotions.
Let's see if we can spot any of these keywords throughout today's lesson.
Here is the lessons outline, and we're going to begin with, what is conflict? Conflict is when people disagree or argue with each other.
They might be hurt by what someone said or did, or they might want different things to each other.
It's time for a check for understanding.
Fill in the missing words in this sentence.
Conflict is when people or with each other.
What could those missing words be? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said disagree and argue, conflict is when people disagree or argue with each other.
Everyone experiences conflict.
It can happen between friends, family or classmates.
Andeep says, "I had a conflict with my brother because he wouldn't share the game console with me." And Laura says, "I had a conflict with my mom because I didn't want to go to bed when she told me to." Time for a check for understanding, which of the below is an example of a conflict? We both felt frustrated." Zoe said, "My sister and I agreed to do some painting together.
We had a great time." Which of the below is an example of a conflict? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said Ethan.
It's okay to have conflicts.
However, it is important that we handle conflicts in a healthy way so that our relationships can stay strong and respectful.
Time for a check for understanding, true or false? It's okay to have conflicts with other people.
Give me a thumbs up if you think it's true.
Or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
It's okay to have conflicts with other people, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said true.
Time for a task now, fill in the missing words in the sentences to explain what conflict is.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go, your answers should look like this.
Conflict is when people don't agree about something and have different ideas about what should happen.
Everyone experiences conflict.
It can happen between friends, family or classmates.
It's okay to have conflicts, however, it's important that we handle them in a healthy way.
Well done if you've got those answers correct, we are now going to move on to the second part of our lesson.
How does conflict feel? Conflicts can feel frustrating or upsetting, especially when you argue or disagree with someone that you care about.
Conflicts can make people feel worried.
They might dislike arguing, or feel uncertain about how the person feels or what might happen next.
Time for a check for understanding.
How might people feel if they have a conflict with someone else? Is it A frustrated, B, calm or C, worried? How might people feel if they have a conflict with someone else? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A, frustrated and C, worried.
Conflicts can make people feel confused.
They might not know what to say or do to fix the problem.
Some people might experience sensations in their body or on their skin when dealing with conflicts.
For example, their heart might beat faster if they feel worried.
They might get a tight feeling in their tummy if they feel angry.
Time for a check for understanding.
What sensations might someone experience when dealing with a conflict? Is it A, a calm feeling in their tummy? B, a faster heartbeat, or C, a tight feeling in their tummy? What sensations might someone experience when dealing with a conflict? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said B and C, someone might experience a faster heartbeat or a tight feeling in their tummy when dealing with a conflict.
Time for a task now, create a mind map of different emotions people might feel when dealing with conflicts.
Include two sensations someone might experience.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your mind map should look like this.
How might conflict feel? Frustrating, confusing, upsetting and worrying, and someone might experience sensations like a faster heartbeat or a tight feeling in their tummy.
Well done if your mind map looks similar to mine.
We are now going to move on to the third and the final parts of the lesson.
How can I handle conflict in healthy ways? There are different things we can do to handle conflicts in a healthy way.
First, we should take deep breaths to calm ourselves down.
We can breathe in through our nose and out through our mouths.
When we feel angry or upset, calming down first helps us to think clearly and avoid making things worse.
Then we should listen carefully to the other person.
This helps us to understand their point of view so that we can find a solution to the problem together.
Time for a check for understanding.
Why is it important to calm ourselves down before handling a conflict? Is it A, so we can avoid making things worse? B, so we can think clearly, or C, so we can win the argument? Why is it important to calm ourselves down before handling a conflict? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A and B, it's important to calm ourselves down before handling a conflict so we can avoid making things worse, and so that we can think clearly.
We should also use kind and respectful words to explain how we feel.
Instead of shouting or blaming the other person, share your feelings and tell them what you'd like to see happen using a calm voice.
We should take responsibility for our actions.
This means saying, sorry.
If we have hurt someone's feelings, we can also speak to a trusted adult if we need help resolving conflicts.
Trusted adults can help us explain our feelings and opinions in calm and respectful ways.
Trusted adults include parents, carers, teachers and school staff.
Here are some examples of different things you can say to help you handle a conflict healthily.
I felt upset when, I didn't know that you felt angry.
Thank you for telling me.
What can we do to make this fair and let's try to sort this out together.
Sometimes we might need some time and space before we can handle a conflict.
However, it's important to talk about our conflict when we're feeling calm so that we can find a solution to the problem.
Time for a check for understanding who has handled conflict in a healthy way? Lola says, "I had a conflict with my friend at lunchtime, I was angry and stormed off.
I didn't listen to their point of view." Mason says "I had a conflict with my brother.
I took some deep breaths to calm myself down and I said sorry for hurting his feelings." Who has handled conflict in a healthy way? Lola or Mason? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said Mason.
Mason took some deep breaths to calm himself down and then he apologised for hurting his brother's feelings.
Being able to disagree with others is important, and it's not a bad thing.
We do not have to agree on everything, but being able to have a conversation about different opinions helps us to understand each other.
When we listen to others, we can learn something new and it helps to build stronger relationships.
Time for a check for understanding, true or false? We should never disagree with anyone.
Give me a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
We should never disagree with anyone, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said false.
Now I would like you to have a little moment to yourself to think about why this statement is false.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
This statement is false because being able to disagree with others is important.
We do not have to agree on everything, but being able to have a conversation about different opinions helps us understand each other.
Time for a task now, create a poster with three different ways we can handle a conflict healthily.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your poster could look like this.
How to handle conflicts in a healthy way.
We should take deep breaths to calm ourselves down.
We should listen carefully to the other person so we can understand their point of view.
We should use kind and respectful words to explain how we feel.
For example, we could say, I felt angry when, well done if your poster looks similar to mine.
This brings us to the end of our lesson, and I've had a wonderful time with you today.
Here is a summary of everything that we've covered.
Conflicts can happen when people disagree or argue with each other.
Conflicts can be frustrating, upsetting and confusing.
Everyone experiences conflicts.
However, it's important that we handle them in a healthy way.
