Hello, my name is Ms. Wroth.
Today we are going to be looking at the lesson called, "Feeling down and lonely." This fits into the lesson unit, "Emotions: How can we add to our emotions toolkit?" Now in this lesson, we are going to be talking about different things that might make people feel down and lonely.
However, we're also going to be looking at a range of strategies that we can use to help us feel better if we are feeling down and lonely.
So make sure you are ready, and then we can continue with the lesson.
Today's lesson outcome is, I can explain what it's like to feel down and lonely, and what might make me feel that way.
Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together.
And we have some friends here from Oak National Academy here to help us.
Laura says we should listen to others, and that means we are not going to interrupt or talk when somebody else is speaking.
Andeep says we should respect privacy, and that means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, we are not going to repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
Jacob says no judgement , and that means if somebody does decide to share a story or their own experience, that we're not going to make comments or judge them because of it.
And Izzy says choose your level of participation, and that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout the lesson.
All of these ground rules are here to keep everyone safe throughout today's lesson.
Here are today's keywords.
We have sad and lonely.
Sad means a feeling of being unhappy without joy, and lonely means sadness from feeling like you are alone or that you don't belong.
Let's keep an eye out for these keywords throughout today's lesson.
Here is the lesson's outline, and we are going to begin with, what does it mean to feel down? Sadness is when we feel unhappy.
Feeling down is a bit like being sad.
It can feel like a heavy cloud is hanging over us, making everything seem a little bit harder or less enjoyable than usual.
Sometimes when people are down, they might cry or want to cry.
They might have a lump in their throat or watery eyes.
They might want to be alone and be by themselves.
And they might not want to do anything.
Time for a check for understanding.
When people are down, they might, A, smile or laugh, B, cry or want to cry, or C, want to be alone or not want to do anything.
Hmm.
When people are down, they might.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said B and C.
When people are down, they might cry or want to cry, or they might want to be alone and not want to do anything.
It's okay to feel sad or down.
All emotions are important, as they can tell us information about ourselves and the world around us.
Being sad or down lets us know that we are missing something or that we need something.
Okay, time for a check for understanding.
True or false? Feeling sad or down is a bad thing.
Hmm.
Give me a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
Feeling sad or down is a bad thing.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay, well done if you said false.
Now I would like you to have a little think to yourself about why this statement is false.
Hmm.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay.
So this statement is false because it's okay to feel sad or down.
All emotions are important.
They can tell us information about ourselves and the world around us.
Josiah says, "When I feel down, I know that I need a hug from a friend." And Amara says, "When I feel down, I know that I need someone to listen to my feelings." Sophia says, "When I feel down, I know that I need some quiet time alone." And Jack says, "When I feel down, I know that I need to speak to a trusted adult to help me feel better." So for different people, they might need different things when they're feeling down.
Okay, let's see if you can remember in this check for understanding.
What did Josiah say he needs when he feels down? Pause this video so you can think about your answer.
Okay, well done if you remembered.
Josiah said he needs a hug from a friend when he feels down.
Okay.
What did Sophia say she needs when she feels down? Can you remember? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you remembered that Sophia needs quiet time alone when she feels down.
Okay.
Time for a task now.
First, I would like you to label the different things people might feel or do when they are down around the image of Josiah and Amara.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Okay, well done for having a go.
Your labels can look like this.
They might cry or want to cry.
They might want to be alone.
And they might not want to do anything.
And feeling down tells us that we are missing something or that we need something.
Okay, so for the second part of the task, I would like you to write a list of things that people might need when they feel down.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Okay, well done for having a go.
Your list could look this.
A hug from a friend, someone to listen to their feelings, quiet time alone, talk to a trusted adult, and to do something they enjoy.
Well done if your list looks similar to mine.
We are now going to move on to the second and the final part of our lesson.
What can make people feel down? Different things make different people feel down.
For some people, big changes can make them feel down.
Big changes might include, starting a new school or a new club, moving house or moving to a new area, or a family member or friend moving away to a new place.
For some people, feeling worried for a long time can make them feel down.
We might feel worried about something happening at school or at home.
When we're not sure how to manage our worries, it can lead us to feeling down.
Time for a check for understanding.
What things can make people feel down? Is it A, big changes, like moving new house or starting a new school, B, feeling excited about something, or C, feeling worried for a long time? Hmm.
What things can make people feel down? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay, well done if you said A and C.
Big changes like starting a new school and feeling worried for a long time can make people feel bad.
People who are lonely can often feel down.
When someone feels lonely, they might feel like they don't have anyone to talk to or spend time with, and they might be feeling excluded from their friends.
Loneliness can also make people feel left out, like they don't belong, which can lead them to feeling down.
Okay, time for a check for understanding.
Why can feeling lonely make people feel down? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay.
When someone feels lonely, they might feel left out or like they don't belong, which can lead to feeling down.
Well done if your answer was similar to mine.
There are different things we can do to feel better if we feel down.
For example, one strategy might include writing our feelings down in a journal or in a diary.
Another strategy can include doing something we enjoy, like reading a book or playing a game.
And a third strategy can be to exercise.
We can exercise at home or at the park with our family, or at school during PE lessons and lunchtime.
Josiah says, "Playing board games with my brother always cheers me up when I feel down." Me too, Josiah, because I love board games.
And Amara says, "When I feel down, writing about my feelings helps me to feel better." Sometimes we might need support from a trusted adult, especially if we feel down for a long time.
Our trusted adults include, parents and carers, and teachers and school staff.
Time for a check for understanding.
Tell your partner two things we can do to feel better if we feel down.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay.
Well done if you said some of the following, we can write our feelings down in a journal or a diary.
We can do something we enjoy, like read a book or play a game.
We can exercise at the park, at school, or at home.
And we can talk to a trusted adult, especially if we've been feeling down for a long time.
Okay, time for a task now.
For the first part of your task, I would like you to tell your partner three reasons why someone might feel down.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Okay, well done for having a go.
Your answers could include, big changes like starting a new school or moving house can make us feel down.
Feeling worried for a long time can also make us feel down.
We might not know how to manage our worries.
And people who are lonely can often feel down.
They might feel like they don't have anyone to talk to or spend time with.
Well done if your answer was similar to mine.
Now for the second part of your task, I would like you to draw and label three things that we can do if we are feeling down.
Think back to those strategies that we spoke about earlier in the lesson.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Okay.
Your pictures and labels could look like this.
We could write our feelings down in a journal or a diary.
We can do something we enjoy, like play a game or read a book.
We could exercise at the park, school, or at home.
And we could talk to a trusted adult like our parents, carers, teachers, and school staff.
Well done if your pictures and labels looks similar to mine.
This brings us to the end of our lesson, and I've had a wonderful time with you today.
Thank you for joining me.
