Hello, my name is Miss Wroth.
Today we are going to be looking at the lesson: Keeping our bodies clean and healthy.
This fits into the lesson unit: Staying safe and healthy: How do I avoid getting ill? For this lesson, it's recommended that you have an adult present with you, so please make sure they're with you before you continue watching this video.
Right.
Let's get ready to begin.
Today's lesson outcome is: I can explain different ways to keep my body clean and healthy and why this is important.
Let's begin at taking a look at our ground rules together.
Laura says we should listen to others.
Andeep says we should respect privacy, and that means if somebody decides to share their own story or experience, that we don't go and repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, no judgments, and that means if somebody does decide to share their own story or experience, that we don't judge them because of it.
And Izzy reminds us that we can choose our level of participation, and that means we can decide if we simply just want to listen or if we want to share something throughout the lesson.
These ground rules make sure that we are all safe in today's lesson.
Here are today's keywords: germs, soap, disease, weight, and plaque.
Germs are tiny living things that can make us ill.
Soap is something we use to clean our body and kill germs. Disease is when germs get inside your body and make you feel sick.
Weight means how heavy something is; we can measure it using scales or feel it when we lift things.
And plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth and can cause cavities.
Let's see if we can spot any of these keywords throughout today's lesson.
Here is the lesson's outline, and we're going to begin with: Why do we need to look after our bodies? Our bodies are amazing at looking after us.
They help us get to places we want to go, and they help us to do what we want to do.
We need to look after our bodies so that we are less likely to get sick.
Germs are tiny living things that live all around us.
They can be found on surfaces, on our bodies, and in the air.
Regularly washing with soap helps to get rid of germs. Some germs can make us sick if they enter our body.
Germs can enter our body if we breathe them in through the air or if there are germs on our bodies which we don't get rid of.
Some diseases are spread by germs on our hands.
Our hands can pick up germs when we touch other people, touch objects and surfaces, or when we go to the toilet.
Time for a check for understanding.
What is the missing word? Some diseases are spread by on our hands, in the air and on surfaces.
Hmm, what is the missing word in this sentence? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said germs. Some diseases are spread by germs on our hands, in the air and on surfaces.
As well as keeping clean, our body needs food to be able to look after us properly.
Food gives our body the nutrients and energy it needs to be able to function at its best.
Doctor Elsie says, "What we eat, how much we eat and our genetics, what we inherit from our biological parents, all influence our weight.
A healthy weight is different for everyone, but it's important to have a balanced diet so that we are a healthy weight." We should all try to have a healthy weight and be proud of our amazing bodies and what they can do.
Dr.
Elsie says, "If we are worried about our weight or lose weight very quickly, it's important to let a trusted adult know." Losing weight quickly can be a sign of illness, so it can be helpful to know what is normal for our body so that if we experience a sudden change, we can tell a trusted adult.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false: Losing weight is always a good thing? You can give me a thumbs up if you think it's true, or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
Hmm.
Losing weight is always a good thing.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said false, losing weight quickly can be a sign of illness.
Being very thin can be dangerous, so it's important that we are a healthy weight for our body.
And remember, a healthy weight is different for everyone.
Time for a task now.
Give two reasons why we need to look after our bodies.
In your answer, try to use the following words: disease and weight.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
You might have said: We need to look after our bodies because if we don't, we can get ill.
Some diseases can be spread by germs on our hands, and if these get into our body, this can make us unwell.
We also need to look after our bodies so that they can perform at their best.
This means maintaining a healthy weight.
If we don't eat enough of a balanced diet, this can be dangerous and make us unwell.
We are now going to move on to the second part of our lesson: How can we keep our bodies clean? When we keep our bodies clean, it helps to keep them healthy.
We need to keep our hands clean by: washing our hands for 20 seconds with warm, soapy water, always washing our hands before eating and after going to the toilet, and using hand sanitizer if we don't have access to soap and water.
We also need to clean the rest of our body by regularly having a shower or bath.
Washing our whole body with warm water and soap keeps us clean and kills germs. It's especially important to wash underneath your arms between your legs and your feet.
We should also keep our bodies clean if we get a cut or a graze.
Germs can get into our bodies through a cut or graze, so we need to clean them and sometimes use a plaster.
If we get a cut or graze, we can ask a trusted adult to help us clean it with an antiseptic wipe.
This helps to get rid of any germs. Plasters are helpful because they can stop germs from getting into our cut or graze.
This helps our body to stay clean and healthy.
Sometimes a cut or graze won't need a plaster, but we should still do our best to keep it clean.
Our body will try to heal the cuts or graze itself by forming a protective scab.
Time for a check for understanding.
What kills germs? Is it A: water, B: soap, or C: plasters? Hmm.
What kills germs? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said B.
Soap kills germs. To stay clean and healthy, we need to keep our mouth and teeth clean too.
Dentist Haru says, "Plaque, which is a layer of bacteria, can form on our teeth and cause cavities.
Cavities are small holes in our teeth, which can become painful.
We can prevent cavities and get rid of plaque by brushing our teeth twice a day." To get rid of plaque to keep our mouth and teeth healthy, we need to brush our teeth twice a day for two minutes.
We should use a small amount of toothpaste when we brush our teeth and brush each part of our mouth for 30 seconds each.
Dentist Haru says, "Try not to rinse after brushing so that the toothpaste can protect your teeth for longer." Time for a check for understanding.
How often should we brush our teeth and how long should we spend doing it? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
We should brush our teeth twice a day for two minutes each time.
We should spend 30 seconds cleaning each part of the mouth.
Well done if your answer was similar to mine.
Time for a task now.
Give at least one answer to each pupil's question.
Andeep asks, "How do I clean my body and kill germs?" And Laura asks, "How do I prevent cavities in my mouth?" Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
To answer Andeep's question, you might have said: We can clean our bodies by washing our hands with soap and water, and by regularly having a shower or a bath.
When we use soap, this kills germs, which could cause us to become ill.
Well done if your answer was similar to mine.
And to answer Laura's question, you might have said: We can prevent cavities and keep our mouth clean by getting rid of plaque.
We can get rid of plaque by brushing our teeth twice a day for two minutes each time.
We should spend 30 seconds brushing each part of our mouth and use a small amount of toothpaste.
Well done if your answer was similar to mine.
This brings us to the end of our lesson.
Thank you for joining with me today.
Here is a summary of everything that we've covered in today's lesson.

We should tell a trusted adult if we lose weight quickly or if our body changes suddenly.
We can keep our bodies clean and kill germs by washing them with water and soap.
If we get a cut or graze, it should be cleaned with an antiseptic wipe, and we may need a plaster to protect it.
We need to get rid of plaque on our teeth by brushing.
We should brush our teeth for two minutes, twice a day.
This keeps our mouth healthy.
Here is a slide with different places that you can get support.
We have the NHS website where the NHS gives advice about health and prevention, including how to access services.
We also have the British Red Cross, which is a volunteer-led organisation which offers support for people, including with First Aid.
