Hello, my name is Mrs. Wroth.
Today we're going to be looking at the lesson called All Emotions are Important.
This fits into the lesson unit Emotions, How Can We Manage Challenges? In this lesson, we are going to be talking about why all emotions are important and why our emotions might change.
So, let's get ready to begin.
Today's lesson outcome is, I can explain why all emotions are important and why emotions can change.
Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together.
Laura says we should listen to others, and that means we are not going to interrupt when somebody else is speaking.
Andeep says we should respect privacy.
And that means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, that we are not going to repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, no judgments.
And that means if somebody does decide to share a story or their own experience, that we're not going to make comments or judge them because of it.
And Izzy says, choose your level of participation.
and that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout the lesson.
All of these ground rules are here to keep everyone safe in today's lesson.
Here are today's key words.
We have emotions, important, and experience.
So emotions are the feelings we have inside, like happiness, sadness, or anger.
Important means something that matters a lot.
And experience means the things that happen to us and how they make us feel.
Let's see if we can spot these key words throughout today's lesson.
Here is the lesson's outline, and we are going to begin with, why do we have different emotions? Emotions are a part of being human.
Emotions are important because they help us understand ourselves better, figure out how a situation or place makes us feel.
They help us make decisions and connect with others.
Time for a check for understanding.
Why are emotions important? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay, well done for having a go.
You should have said, emotions are important because they help us understand ourselves better, figure out how a situation makes us feel, make decisions, and connect with others.
It is desirable to be happy because it shows that things are going well.
Happiness helps us enjoy life and feel good about ourselves and experiences.
Can you think of any other desirable emotions? Have a little think to yourself.
Other desirable emotions include feeling confident, proud, and excited.
Josiah says, feeling confident tells me that I have a positive mindset and that I am able to handle a situation or try something new.
Although sadness can be an uncomfortable feeling, it is still important.
Sadness tells us that we need something, such as support, rest, or time to feel better.
Time for a check for understanding.
Fill in the missing words in this sentence.
Sadness tells us that we need something such as, rest or to feel better.
Hmm, what are those missing words in that sentence? Pause the video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay, well done if you said support and time.
Sadness tells us we need something such as support, rest, or time to feel better.
Anger is important because it tells us when something feels unfair or when we don't feel safe.
It can give us the energy to speak up, set boundaries, or protect ourselves.
Anxiety is important because it shows us what we care about.
When we feel anxious, it often means something matters to us and it can help us prepare or make careful decisions.
Time for a check for understanding.
Why is anxiety important? Is it A, because it tells us when something feels unfair, B, because it shows us what we care about, or C, it tells us that we are enjoying something? Hmm.
Why is anxiety important? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done If you said B, anxiety is important because it shows us what we care about.
Time for a task now.
Tell your partner why it is important to experience each emotion, happiness, sadness, anger, and anxiety.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Okay, well done for having a go.
your answers could include, happiness is important because it helps us enjoy life and feel good about ourselves and our experiences.
Sadness is important because it tells us that we need something, such as support, rest, or time to feel better.
Anger is important because it tells us when we feel something is unfair and when we don't feel safe.
It can give us the energy to speak up, set boundaries, or protect ourselves.
And anxiety is important because it shows us what we care about.
When we feel anxious, it often means something matters to us and it can help us prepare or make careful decisions.
Well done if your answers were similar to mine.
We're now going to move on to the second part of our lesson.
Are my emotions the same as yours? We all feel the same types of emotions, but we might fill them at different times.
Izzy says, I felt anxious before I started the new school year.
I was worried that I was going to find the work too tricky.
Lucas says, I'm different to Izzy.
I felt excited when I moved up the school year.
However, I felt anxious when I found out we were going on a school trip because I wasn't sure what it would be like.
People can have different emotional reactions to the same situation.
Laura says, I feel frustrated when people don't want to play the same game with me at lunchtime.
Andeep says, I'm different to Laura.
I feel curious and excited when my friends want to play a different game to the one I suggest.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false, people have the same emotional reactions to the same situation? Hmm, give me a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down.
If you think it's false.
People have the same emotional reactions to this same situation, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said false.
So this statement is false because everyone is different.
People can have different emotional reactions to this same situation.
Our past experiences and personalities affect how we feel.
Someone who has had a negative experience before might feel more anxious or upset in a situation or someone else might feel fine, especially if they haven't had a negative experience.
Alex says, I'm quite shy.
In the past, I have struggled to make new friends, so I find joining new clubs challenging.
Aisha says, I'm more outgoing, so I haven't struggled with making friends before.
This means I find joining new clubs easier than Alex.
Even if our emotions aren't exactly the same, we can still try to understand and care about how others are feeling.
This is called empathy and it helps us to build kind and supportive relationships with others.
Aisha says, don't worry, Alex, I will stick with you at guitar club after school.
We can make new friends together.
Thanks, Aisha.
That makes me feel more comfortable, says Alex.
Time for a check for understanding.
How can we show empathy to others? Is it's A, by trying to understand how others feel? B, by ignoring how others feel, or C, by caring about how others feel? Hmm.
How can we show empathy to others? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said A and C.
We can show empathy to others by trying to understand how they might feel and by caring about how others feel.
Time for a task now.
Fill in the missing words in the paragraph to show your understanding about how people experience emotions differently.
You can use the word bank below to help you.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your paragraph should look like this.
We all feel the same types of emotions, but we might feel them at different times.
People can have different emotional reactions to this same situation.
Our past experiences and personalities affect how we feel.
Even if our emotions aren't exactly the same, we can still try to understand and care about how others are feeling.
Well done if you got those words correct.
And these words were not used from the word bank, bodies, same, and events.
We're now going to move on to the third and the final parts of our lesson.
Do our emotions change over time? Our emotions can change as we grow and learn.
What makes us upset or happy when we're younger might be different when we're older because we understand things in new ways.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false, our emotions can change as we grow and learn? Give me a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
Hmm.
Our emotions can change as we grow and learn, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay, well done if you said true.
There are many things that can affect how we feel, which means we can't be happy all the time.
For instance, our emotions can change depending on what we are doing, how tired we are, or how hungry we are.
Time for a check for understanding.
What can affect our emotions.
Is it A, how tired we are, B, how hungry we are or C, what we are doing? Hmm.
What can affect our emotions? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said all of them.
How tired we are, how hungry we are, and what we are doing can all affect our emotions.
Learning about emotions helps us to manage them better.
As we get older and understand ourselves more, we often find new ways to deal with our feelings and we can learn to share our feelings in kind and clear ways.
To help us manage our emotions we can, do mindfulness activities such as yoga or busy hands activities, which helps us focus on our hands rather than what's happening around us.
Busy hand activities include playing with Play-Doh or slime, writing, colouring, or knitting.
We can exercise regularly.
Talk to a trusted adult at home or school or talk to a friend.
Spend time outside in the garden or at the park.
Take some deep breaths.
(breathes deeply) And write down or draw our feelings.
Time for a check for understanding.
List two to three ways we can manage our emotions.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Okay, you might have said, do mindfulness activities like yoga, do busy hand activities like playing with Play-Doh or slime, exercise regularly, talk to a trusted adult or friend, spend time outside, take some deep breaths, and write down or draw our feelings.
Well done if your answer was similar to mine.
Time for a task now.
We're going to read the statements together and then I would like you to tick the statements that are true and cross the statements that are false.
So let's read the statements.
The first one says, our emotions stay the same throughout the day.
The second statement says, our emotions can change as we grow and learn.
The third statement says, there are many things that can affect how we feel, which means we cannot be happy all the time.
And the fourth statement says, what makes us upset or happy when we're younger will be the same when we're older.
So your task is to tick the statements that are true and cross the statements that are false.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we'll go through the answers together.
Okay, well done for having a go.
So for this first statement, you should have crossed it because our emotions do not stay the same throughout the day.
We might feel lots of different emotions in one day.
The second statement you should have ticked, this is true, our emotions can change as we grow and learn because we learn about the world around us and see things in a different way.
The third statement you should have ticked as well.
There are many things that can affect how we feel, such as how tired we are, how hungry we are, which means we cannot be happy all the time.
And the last statement you should have crossed.
What makes us happy or upset when we're younger will not always be the same when we are older.
Well done if you got those correct.
Time for the second part of our task now.
I would like you to rewrite the false statements so that they are correct.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Okay.
So your correct statements could look like this.
Our emotions can change many times during the day, and the second statement should be changed to look like this.
What makes us upset or happy might be different when we're older than when we're younger.
Well done if you've got those correct.
This brings us to the end of our lesson.
Here is a summary of everything that we've covered today.
Emotions are important because they help us understand ourselves better and figure out how a situation makes us feel.
We all feel the same types of emotions, but we might feel them at different times.
People can also have different emotional reactions to the same situation.
Even if our emotions aren't exactly the same, we can still try to understand and care about how others are feeling.
Our emotions change all the time.
For example, depending on what we are doing, how tired we are, or how hungry we feel.
And our emotions can also change as we grow and learn.
Here's a slide with different places that you can get support.
We have the NHS websites where the NHS provides advice about health and prevention, including how to access services.
And we also have the child line, which is a website and phone line which is able to offer confidential advice and support.
