Hello, my name is Ms. Wroth.
Today we're going to be looking at the lesson group chats.
This fits into the lesson unit, Our online lives: how do I thrive online? Now for this lesson, it's required for you to have an adult present, so please make sure they're with you before you press play.
Right, let's get ready to begin.
Today's lesson outcome is, I can identify the risks of group chats.
Let's begin by taking on a cause I have a ground rules together.
Laura says, "We should listen to others." Jacob says, "No judgement ." And that means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, that we don't judge them because of it.
Andeep says, "We should respect privacy." And that means if somebody does decide to share their own story or their experience, that we don't go and repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation." And that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout.
Here are today's key words.
Group chat.
A group chat is an online conversation between multiple people.
Online stranger, is someone we don't know offline.
And socialise.
Socialise means to hang or chat with someone that we know.
Let's see if we can spot any of these keywords throughout the lesson.
This is today's lessons outline, and we are going to begin with what happens in group chats.
A group chat is an online conversation between multiple people.
Group chats can be created on messaging apps and gaming streams. Group chats can be a great way for people to socialise with friends and family.
They allow us to send messages, photos, and videos to multiple people, like friends or family members at once.
Time for a check for understanding.

Well done if you said b, socialise.
Group chats can be a way for people to socialise with friends and family.
As we get older, group chats may become a more common way to socialise with others.
Group chats can be used in lots of different ways.
David says, "I use group chats to organise events like birthdays or meetups." And Jack says, "My family have a group chat so we can tell each other what time we'll be home from school or work." Many adults use group chats at work to share information and keep each other up to date about what tasks need to be done.
Izzy's dad says, "I run my own business and let my employees know what needs to be done each morning on the group chat." Time for a check for understanding.
What can group chats be useful for? Is it a, organising events, b, playing games, or c, sharing information.

Well done if you said a and c, group chats can be useful for organising events and sharing information.
Time for a task now.
Label the image with different things we can do in group chats.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we'll go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answers could include, socialise with friends and family, send photos and videos, organise events, and share information.
Well done if your answers were similar to mine.
We're now going to move on to the second part of our lesson.
Why can group chats be risky? Although group chats can be fun and exciting, they can also be risky.
This means we need to think carefully about how to stay safe in group chats and understand what to do if something goes wrong.
Group chats can be risky because you can be added to one without your permission.
We can also be added to group chats by people we do not know.
Group chats with online strangers can be dangerous.
You may receive a message, photo, or video that makes you feel uncomfortable or worried.
For example, this person has been added to a group chat by somebody they don't know and they've received a message to say, "Hey, I'm just a mate.
Have you got any pics?" However, we can change our safety settings so that we cannot be added to group chats by people who we do not know.
A trusted adult can help us with this.
We can also leave group chats that we don't want to be in at any time.
Time for a check for understanding, true or false? Group chats can be risky because without the correct safety setting, you can be added to one without your permission.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said true.
Sometimes an online stranger in a group chat might try to get you to talk to them in a private chat where no one can see the messages they send you.
For example, skibidi19 has just said, "Hey, what are you up to? You wanna message on a different chat more private." Online strangers might ask for personal information or pressure you to do something you don't want to do in a private chat.
skibidi19 has just said, "This chat is much better.
Can you send me a pic of yourself?" Jack says, "Private chats with online strangers are more dangerous because they can send you messages that other people can't see." David says, "If an online stranger asks you to move to a private chat, tell a trusted adult straight away.
You don't have to do what they say, and it's always okay to block them or leave the group chat." Time for a check for understanding.
Why might an online stranger want to speak to you on a private chat rather than a group chat? Is it a, because they don't know anyone else on the group chat, b, because they don't want other people to see their messages to you or see, or c, because they want to get to know you better and be your friend.
Why might an online stranger want to speak to you on a private chat rather than a group? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said b, an online stranger might want to speak to you on a private chat rather than a group chat because they don't want other people to see their messages to you.
We cannot trust everyone in group chats even if we are added by someone we know.
Some people use group chats to send unkind messages about others.
They might use the group chats to forward photos and videos of other people with without their consent.
This can happen in group chats with online strangers and with people we know in person.
It is important to think carefully about what we choose to share on group chats.
Anything said on a group chat can easily be screenshotted and forwarded to other people.
Izzy says, "If you see a message from someone in a group chat that is unkind or rude, you must tell a trusted adult." Jacob says, "It's important not to join in with the unkind behaviour or share the unkind or rude message with anyone else." Time for a check for understanding, true or false? Group chats with people we know are always safe to be in.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said false.
Group chats with people we know can still be risky.
The people we know may use group chats to send unkind messages about others or share photos and videos without their consent.
Time for a task now.
Andeep is talking about group chats.
Write down three reasons why Andeep wrong.
Andeep says, "Group chats are always fun and safe to use." Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answer could include, group chats can be risky because you can be added to one without your permission if you haven't turned on the correct safety settings.
Group chats can be risky because an online stranger might try to get you to speak on a private chat and ask you for personal information or pressure you to do something.
And group chats can be risky because people can send unkind or rude messages about others.
Well done if you said something similar.
We are now going to move on to the third and final part of our lesson.
What group chats should you avoid? There are different types of group chats we should avoid.
Group chats with online strangers, group chats that share inappropriate content and group chats that pressure us to do something.
We should avoid group chats with online strangers.
It's important to always tell a trusted adult.
If an online stranger has added us to a group chat.
Trusted adults can help us leave the group chat and block the online stranger.
Time for a check for understanding.
What can trusted adults help us do if we get added to a group chat by an online stranger.
Is it's a, block the online stranger, b, write a message to the online stranger, or c, leave the group chat.
What can trusted adults help us do if we get added to a group chat by an online stranger? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said a and c.
Our trusted adult can help us by blocking the stranger and leaving the group chats.
We should avoid group chats that share inappropriate content.
Inappropriate content means the messages, photos, or videos that are being shared are upsetting or rude.
We should avoid group chats that pressure us to do something.
Some people on these types of group chats might make you feel guilty for not doing as they say.
For example, in this group chat somebody has said, "Everyone send this video around." They've also said, "If you don't, we will kick you out of this chat." Group chats on gaming streams can be safe to use if we are careful.
This means not sharing personal information, only messaging people we know in person and coming offline and telling a trusted adult if we see something that worries us.
Time for a check for understanding.
Which group chats should we avoid? Is it a, group chats and gaming streams, b, group chats that share inappropriate content, or c, group chats that pressure us to do something.
Which group chats should we avoid? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said b and c, we should avoid group chats that share inappropriate content and group chats that pressure us to do something.
Time for a task now.
With a partner decide for each group chat if you would avoid it or not and why.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task and then we will go through the answers together.
Okay, so for the first group chat, your answer could include, I would avoid this group chat because the person is trying to pressure someone into sharing personal information which is not safe.
For the second group chat, your answer could include, this group chat seems safe to be in and I would avoid it as the person is simply sharing information about their party.
And for the final group chat, your answer could include, I would avoid this group chat because the people in this group chat are sending inappropriate and unkind messages about someone else.
Well done if your answers were similar to mine.
So this brings us to the end of our lesson, and here is a summary of everything that we've covered today.
Group chats can be a great way to socialise with friends and family.
However, some group chats can be more risky.
For example, group chats with online strangers.
We can change our safety settings so that only people we know can add us to group chats.
We can also leave group chats that we don't want to be in at any time.
We should avoid group chats that pressure us to do something or that share inappropriate content.
