Hello, my name is Ms. Rose.
Today, we're going to be looking at the lesson, online comparisons.
This fits into the lesson unit, our online lives, how do I thrive online? Now, in this lesson, we're going to be talking about some things that might make us feel anxious when we go online.
So for any point you feel uncomfortable or worried, it's important that you stop the video and find your trusted adult to speak to.
Okay, let's get ready to begin.
Today's lesson outcome is, I can explain why things online can affect our mental health.
Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together.
Laura says, "We should listen to others." Jacob says, "No judgement ." And that means, if somebody decides to share their own experience or a story that we don't judge them because of it.
Andeep says, "We should respect privacy." And that means, if somebody does decide to share their own experience or story, that we don't go and repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation." And that means, you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to say something throughout.
Here are some of today's keywords, social media, social media is websites and apps used to share words and images with other people.
Compare, compare means to look at how similar or different we are to someone else.
And here are the rest of today's keywords.
Influencer, an influencer is an online celebrity who is famous or trying to get famous.
And anxious.
Anxious means feeling worried, nervous, or unsure about something that might happen like before a test or speaking in front of people.
The feeling can also be felt in your body.
Okay, let's see if we can spot any of these keywords in today's lesson.
Here is the lessons outline, and we're going to begin with are the things we see on social media realistic? Many people use social media.
Social media can be accessed on websites and apps to share words and images with other people.
Not everything on social media is realistic.
Some things can appear very differently on social media compared to how they are actually in real life.
Some people on social media might edit their photos and videos, only share the best parts of their lives, exaggerate or lie, or use fake photos and videos.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false, everything on social media is realistic.
Hmm, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done, if you said false.

Some people may edit their photos and videos or exaggerate or lie about something they have done.
Some people edit their photos and videos on social media to make them look better.
They might add filters to change colours, whiten their teeth, change their body shape, or blur their spots.
In many cases, people who edit photos or videos online may feel insecure about the way they look or are worried about how they are seen by others.
Holly says, "Sometimes, I put a filter on my photos when I post on social media, it makes me feel more confident about the way I look." Time for a check for understanding.
True or false, people on social media never edit their photos? Hmm, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done, if you said false.
Some people edit their photos and videos on social media to make themselves look better.
They might add filters to change colours, blur their spots, or whiten their teeth.
Some people only share the best part of their lives on social media to make their posts seem more interesting or exciting.
For example, somebody's gone on holiday, and this is the reality of the beach that they went to.
However, on social media, they've cropped the picture and they've posted having the best holiday.
Some people exaggerate or lie on social media to gain more attention, or to appear as though they have a perfect life.
For example, this person has posted on social media a picture of their desk with the caption, "Feeling super organised," but in reality, this is what they're thinking, "I'm actually feeling overwhelmed, and I haven't done any of my homework yet." Digital devices are getting much better at creating fake images and videos.
Some people share fake images or videos on social media for different reasons.
They might want to spread information that isn't true.
Advertise something, gain more attention and followers.
Time for a check for understanding.
How might someone make their life appear more interesting on social media than it actually is? Hmm, is it A, lie or exaggerate about something? B, post unedited photos and videos? C, only share the best part of their lives? Or D, post fake photos and videos? Hmm, how might someone make their life appear more interesting on social media than it actually is? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done, if you said A, C, and D.
Somebody might make their life appear more interesting on social media by lying or exaggerating about something, by only sharing the best parts of their lives or by posting fake photos and videos.
Time for a task now, look at this social media post.
Write down three reasons why this social media post might not be realistic.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answers could include, skygirl019 might have lied or exaggerated about the amount of presents they received.
They might have used a fake photo, or they might only be sharing their best part of their birthday.
Well done, if your answers were similar.
We're now going to move on to the second part of our lesson.
Are the lives of influencers as good as they look? An influencer is an online celebrity who is famous or trying to get famous by posting on social media.
There are many different types of influencers, lifestyle, sports, food, gaming, beauty, and fashion.
Some influencers post online as a hobby.
For others, it is a job.
Online influencers typically post a lot on social media, engage with their followers by interacting with them.
Have a large number of followers or post content that makes them appear a certain way.
Time for a check for understanding.
What does an online influencer do? Is it A, post lots of photos and videos on social media? B, decide who gets to be famous on social media? Or C, post content that makes them appear a certain way? Hmm, what does an online influencer do? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done, if you said A and C.
An online influencer normally posts lots of photos and videos on social media, and they might post content that makes them appear a certain way.
Some influencers are not always honest online, they might post content that makes them appear to have a perfect or exciting life.
For example, in reality, this person's at home online shopping, but on their social media account, they've posted this picture with the caption, "Perfect day, shopping, lunch, and cinema." Just like everyone in life, online influencers can have a bad day.
However, some online influencers choose to only share the good parts of their lives.
This can trick us into believing that they have a perfect life.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false, some influencers choose to only share the best parts of their lives on social media.
Hmm, true or false? Pause this video so you can have so thinking time.
Well done, if you said true.
Online influencers often have a team that help them to create content for their social media.
The team can edit the content to make their influencer look more attractive, happy, and energetic than they are in reality.
Some influencers work in collaboration with companies to advertise or sell a product.
This means companies can tell their influencer what to say and post on their social media.
When an influencer collaborates with a company, they may be gifted products like clothes, makeup, or games.
Some online influencers are not always honest about whether they have bought these products or if they have been gifted.
This can make us feel like we need to buy more things to keep up with trends.
Time for a check for understanding.
What happens when an online influencer works in collaboration with a company? Is it A, they can be told what to say and post? B, they get to post what they like? Or C, they might get gifted products? Hmm, what happens when an online influencer works in collaboration with a company? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Time for a task now.
Laura is talking about online influencers.
She says, "Online influencers always appear to have such exciting lives." Tell your partner three reasons why the lives of online influencers might not always be as exciting as they appear.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Some online influencers work in collaboration with companies that may tell them what to say or post online, and some online influencers have a team behind them that can edit their content to make their lives seem more exciting.
For example, they might edit their photos and videos to make them seem more attractive, happy, or energetic.
Well done, if your answers were similar to mine.
We're now going to move on to the third and final part of the lesson.
Is it healthy to compare ourselves to others? It can be hard not to compare ourselves to others online.
However, this can negatively impact our mental health, for example, we might start to feel less confident or anxious about what others think.
It's important to remember that not everything we see online and on social media is realistic.
If we feel upset by what we see on social media, we should always speak to a trusted adult.
Seeing unrealistic posts on social media can change our expectations on how we should look or what our lives should look like or be like.
For example, jaden12 has posted this picture on his social media, but it's an edited photo.
Alex says, "His skin looks so smooth in this photo, why is my skin so spotty in comparison?" When we compare ourselves to others online, it can also make us feel anxious or feel pressured to change something about ourselves.
Alex says, "I need to find a way to get rid of my spots, maybe I should buy a new spot cream, or maybe I should edit my photos." Time for a check for understanding.
True or false, comparing ourselves to others on social media is healthy.
Hmm, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done, if you said false.
When we compare ourselves to others on social media, particularly when we see unrealistic content, we might start to feel anxious or feel pressured to change something about ourselves.
Some people who often compare themselves to others may feel pressured to post unrealistic content to make them look better.
They see unrealistic content on social media, this makes them feel less confident and feel pressured to edit photos or change something about themselves.
And then this leads to them posting unrealistic content of themselves.
If we spend too much time comparing ourselves to others on social media, over time, we can start to feel negative and insecure about ourselves.
For example, when we're scrolling on social media, we might think to ourselves, "Oh, they have lots of nice clothes.
Their hair is so long and shiny.
My clothes are horrible and I hate my hair." Time for a check for understanding.
What can happen, if we compare ourselves to others online? Is it A, we can learn how to get more followers? B, we might start to feel anxious or negative? Or C, we might feel pressured to change ourselves? Hmm, what can happen, if we compare ourselves to others online? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done, if you said B and C.
If we compare ourselves to others online, we might start to feel anxious or negative and we might feel pressured to change ourselves.
There are different things we can do.
Instead of comparing ourselves to others on social media, we can come offline and do something we enjoy.
Think of things we like about ourselves, or ask friends or family to share what they like about us.
And we can remind ourselves that not everything we see on social media is realistic.
Jacob says, "It's important to remember that there is no such thing as a perfect life.
Many things we see on social media are unrealistic and have been edited to look better." Izzy says, "Always tell a trusted adult if you're starting to feel anxious, pressured, or negative when using social media." Time for a check for understanding.
What could we do instead of comparing ourselves to others in social media? Is it A, think of things we like about ourselves? B, think of ways we can make ourselves look better? Or C, come offline and do something we enjoy? Hmm, what could we do instead of comparing ourselves to others on social media? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done, if you said A and C.
Instead of comparing ourselves to others on social media, we can think of things we like about ourselves and we can come offline and do something we enjoy.
Time for a task now.
Laura has been comparing herself to others on social media, she says, "I wish my dad took me to the best salon, my hair looks so horrible right now." Write down two to three things Laura could do instead of comparing herself to others on social media.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answers could include, Laura should come offline and do something she enjoys.
She could think of things she likes about herself or ask her friends and families to share what they like about her.
And she should remind herself that not everything she sees on social media is realistic.
Well done, if your answers were similar to mine.
This brings us to the end of our lesson.
And here is a summary of everything that we've covered today.
Some people share unrealistic content on social media, for example, they might only choose to share the best parts of their lives or edit their photos and videos.
Some online influencers have a team behind them that can make them appear more attractive, happy, or energetic than they normally are.
We should remember that influencers content is not always realistic.
Comparing ourselves to other people online can negatively impact our mental health.
For example, we might feel pressured to change the way we look or may feel anxious.
We must always tell a trusted adult if we start to feel anxious or pressured when using social media.
