Hello, my name is Ms. Rose.
Today we're going to be looking at the lesson called Healthy Romantic Relationships.
This fits into the lesson unit, Healthy Relationships: How Can We Live in Harmony? Now, in this lesson, we are going to be talking about healthy romantic relationships, and this might make you feel a little bit uncomfortable, so it's recommended that you have an adult with you before you continue watching the video.
Today's lesson outcome is I can describe the features of a healthy romantic relationship.
Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together.
Laura says we should listen to others, and that means not interrupting when somebody else is speaking.
Andeep says we should respect privacy, and that means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, that we don't go and repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, no judgement , and that means if somebody does decide to share their own story or experience, that we don't judge them because of it.
And Izzy says, choose your level of participation, and that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout.
All of these ground rules are here to keep everyone safe in today's lesson.
Here are some of today's key words.
We have relationship, romantic, partner and respect.
Relationship means the connection between people.
Romantic means the connection between people who are in love or find each other attractive.
Partner means a person who is in a long-term romantic relationship and respect means treating others kindly and valuing their feelings, ideas and boundaries.
For example, listening carefully and being polite even if you disagree.
And we have one more key word here, which is disrespected.
Disrespected means when a person isn't treated kindly, their feelings and ideas aren't valued or their boundaries aren't considered.
Let's see if we can spot these keywords throughout today's lesson.
Here is the lesson's outline, and we're going to begin with what does a healthy relationship look like? In life, we form many different relationships with other people.
Some people choose to form romantic relationships.
A romantic relationship is when people feel attracted to each other and sometimes are in love.
Good partners in a romantic relationship will be loving, kind and caring toward each other.
This means they will care about each other's feelings and listen to their opinions.
Even when they disagree.
They will make each other feel liked, loved and respected.
Time for a check for understanding.
Think of three things a good partner should be in a healthy romantic relationship.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done for having a go.
You could have said, loving, kind, caring, respectful and a good listener.
Healthy romantic relationships should make both partners happy.
Good partners should not make each other feel scared, nervous, disrespected or unsafe.
They should make each other feel supported and calm.
Both partners should treat each other with respect.
This means not interrupting when the other person is talking, not pressuring them to do things that they don't want to do.
Being gentle and kind even during arguments, not controlling or bossing their partner around or telling them what to do and respecting each other's boundaries.
Time for a check for understanding.
How can partners show respect to each other? Is it A, by being gentle and kind even during arguments? B, by pressuring them to do things that they don't want to do, or C, by not interrupting when their partner is talking? Hmm.
How can partners show respect to each other? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said A and C.
Partners can show respect to each other by being gentle and kind even during arguments and by not interrupting when their partner is talking.
Partners in healthy romantic relationships spend time apart from each other.
They spend time with their friends, their families and they have their own hobbies.
This young man says, I enjoy rock climbing with my friends and watching films at the cinema.
His partner says, I like to go swimming with my sister and play games on my tablets at home.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false.
Partners should spend all their time with each other.
Hmm.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer and then we'll go through the answer together.
Well done if you said false.
Now I want you to have a little think about why this statement is false.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
This statement is false because partners in healthy romantic relationships spend time apart from each other.
It's important to spend time with friends, family or doing hobbies.
Time for a task now.
Read each scenario and decide which relationships are healthy or unhealthy.
Then explain your decision to your partner.
And there are multiple scenarios on the following slides, so make sure that you get to read them all.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
The first scenario says, Riya wants to spend all their time with Emily and gets annoyed when she hangs out with her friends.
Riya says it's she loves her and thinks that Emily's friends aren't very nice, so your answer should be this relationship is unhealthy.
Riya is trying to control who Emily spends time with and this is disrespectful.
Well done if your answer is similar to mine.
The second scenario says, Leo often talks to Ava about his worries.
She listens to him and suggests strategies to help him manage his feelings.
And you should have said, this relationship is healthy.
Leo feels safe and comfortable to talk about his worries to Ava.
She listens attentively and responds in a way that shows that she cares about his feelings.
The first scenario says, Kasper and Hijira are in different sports teams. They take it in turns to watch each other play after school or at the weekends, and you should have said, this relationship is healthy.
Kasper and Hijira are showing neutral respect for each other's hobbies, even though they are different.
Well done if your answer was similar to mine.
The fourth scenario says, Jackson has some birthday money saved up and wants to buy a new phone.
Mo tells him that if he loved him, he would have used that money on something that they could do together.
And you should have said this relationship is unhealthy.
Mo is trying to control Jackson by making him feel guilty for wanting to spend his own money on something he wants.
Well done if your answer was similar to mine.
And the final scenario says, Harry tries to communicate his feelings with Belle when he feels upset about something she has done.
Belle responds by saying, if Harry wasn't so sensitive, there wouldn't be a problem, and you should have said This relationship is unhealthy because Belle is dismissing Harry's feelings instead of listening and trying to understand, she's blaming Harry for being too sensitive and is avoiding responsibility for her actions.
Well done if your answer was similar to mine.
We're now going to move on to the second and the final part of our lesson.
How can people keep a relationship healthy? There are different things partners can do to keep their relationship healthy.
It's important to communicate honestly about your thoughts, feelings and boundaries.
Jacob reminds us that a boundary is an imaginary line that separates what you will allow and what you won't allow.
This young man says, I told my partner that I prefer to talk about my feelings in a quiet environment rather than in front of other people.
This young lady says, I respect my partner's boundaries.
If I see my partner upset, I will wait until we get home to ask him how he's feeling.
It is also important for both partners to be able to express their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgement.
This means listening carefully and not making the other person feel bad about themselves.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false.
Communicating our thoughts, feelings and boundaries to a partner can keep a relationship healthy.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said true, people can keep a relationship healthy by accepting and appreciating their partner's interests and differences.
Every person is unique and it's important that their partner allows them to be themselves without fear of judgement.
People can keep a relationship healthy by encouraging and supporting each other's dreams and ambitions.
This young man says, my partner and I really want to do well in our GCSE exams next year.
This young lady says, so we support and encourage each other by revising at the library together after school.
Time for a check for understanding.
Fill in the missing words in this sentence.
People can keep a relationship healthy by and their partner's interests and differences.
What could those missing words be? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer? Well done if you said, accepting and appreciating.
People can keep a relationship healthy by accepting and appreciating their partner's interests and differences.
If a relationship becomes unhappy, a couple may decide to break up.
Sometimes couples will seek support and trusted adults to improve their relationship, for example, a counsellor.
However, if someone is feeling unsafe or disrespected in the relationship, it's important to leave the relationship.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false.
Couples should stay in a relationship no matter what.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Well done if you said false.
Now I want you to think about why this statement is false.
Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.
Bravo for having a go.
This statement is false because if a relationship is not making both partners happy, it's always okay to break up.
It's especially important to leave a relationship if you feel unsafe or disrespected.
Time for a task now.
Read the scenario and write three pieces of advice you would give this person.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answer could include, it's important that you communicate your thoughts, feelings and boundaries with Zara.
When Zara expresses her feelings, you should listen carefully to understand her perspectives to show that you care, you should try to accept and appreciate each other's differences.
You can do this by encouraging and supporting each other's hobbies, dreams and ambitions.
And finally, you could speak to a trusted adult to help you navigate the things that you are unsure of.
However, it's okay to break up if you're feeling unhappy in the relationship.
Well done if your answer was similar to mine.
This brings us to the end of our lesson.
Thank you for joining me today.
