Hello, my name is Miss Wroth.

Today we're going to be looking at a lesson called Love, living together, marriage, and civil partnership.

This fits into the lesson unit Healthy relationships: How can we live in harmony? Now, in this lesson, we're going to be talking about things that might make you feel worried or upset.

For example, we are going to be talking about why two adults might decide to end their relationship or get a divorce.

So for this lesson, it is recommended that you have an adult with you before you continue watching.

Today's lesson outcome is I can explain why people choose to maintain relationships, live together, or get married.

Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together.

Laura says we should listen to others, and that means not interrupting when somebody else is speaking.

Andeep says we should respect privacy, and that means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, we don't go and repeat it to others outside of this lesson.

Jacob says "No judgement ," and that means if somebody does decide to share their own story or experience that we don't judge them because of it.

And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation," and that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout.

All of these ground rules are here to keep everyone safe in the lesson.

Here are today's keywords.

We have marriage and civil partnership.

Marriage is a legal commitment between two people who choose to spend their lives together.

Civil partnership is a legal relationship between two people, like marriage, that gives them similar rights.

Here is the lesson's outline, and we're going to begin with How can a romantic couple commit to each other? Romantic couples can choose to commit to each other in various ways.

When a couple commits to each other, it means that they are making a promise to support, respect, and care for each other in good and bad times.

Some couples commit to each other by choosing to live together.

One person might move in with their partner, or they might choose to find a new home and move in together.

Some romantic couples commit to each other by deciding to stay together for a long time.

They might decide to get married or have a civil partnership.

Time for a check for understanding.

How might a couple commit to each other? Is it A, by living together; B, by getting a pet; or C, by getting married or having a civil partnership? Hmm.

How might a couple commit to each other? Pause this video so you can think about your answer.

Well done if you said A and C.

A couple can commit to each other by living together or by getting married or having a civil partnership.

Marriage is a traditional ceremony where two people commit to each other in front of friends and family.

After the ceremony, the couple are legally recognised as partners, and they often celebrate with a party or a special gathering.

Marriages can be religious if the couple choose for it to be.

For example, a Christian couple can get married in a church, where a priest or minister will lead the ceremony.

However, not all marriages are religious.

These are called civil ceremonies.

Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? A marriage ceremony is always a religious occasion.

Hmm.

Pause this video so you can think about your answer.

Well done if you said false.

Marriage ceremonies can either be religious or civil, depending on the couple's choice.

A civil partnership is a legal promise of commitment between two people that does not involve a traditional ceremony.

Couples who form a civil partnership have the same legal rights as a couple who have married.

For example, if one partner dies, the other partner has the right to inherit their money, property, and belongings, unless the partner has said differently in their will.

If one partner becomes ill, the other partner has the right to make important decisions about their health.

And if the couple have children, they both have the right to make decisions about their children.

Time for a check for understanding.

Fill in the missing word in this sentence.

Couples who form a civil partnership have the same rights as a couple who have married.

Hmm.

What could that missing word be? Pause this video so you can think about your answer.

Well done if you said legal.

Couples who form a civil partnership have the same legal rights as a couple who have married.

Time for a task now.

First, create a mind map of the different ways a romantic couple can commit to each other.

Then, write a sentence to explain what it means when a couple commits to each other.

Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

Your mind map could look like this.

How can a romantic couple commit to each other? By having a civil partnership, by choosing to live together, or by choosing to get married.

And your sentence could include, when a couple commits to each other, it means that they are making a promise to support, respect, and care for each other in good and bad times.

Well done if your answers were similar to mine.

We're now going to move on to the second part of our lesson, Who can get married or have a civil partnership? In the UK, couples can get married or form a civil partnership once they are 18 years old.

People can fall in love with any gender.

This means it is legal in the UK for people of any gender to get married or form a civil partnership.

Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? A marriage must be between a man and a woman.

Hmm.

Pause this video so you can think about your answer.

Well done if you said false.

Now I would like you to spend a little moment thinking about why this statement is false.

Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.

This statement is false because in the UK, marriage is legally allowed between two people of any gender.

However, if a same-sex couple want to get married in a religious ceremony, for example, a church, they might need to get permission from the religious organisation first.

Sometimes a religious organisation will agree to marry or to bless the couple.

Some religious organisations will not hold marriage ceremonies for a same-sex couple.

A couple cannot marry or form a civil partnership if they are already married or are in a civil partnership with someone else.

This is illegal in the UK.

They will need to get a divorce, which means to end their marriage, or end their civil partnership before committing to someone new.

Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? A couple cannot marry or have a civil partnership if they are already married or are in a civil partnership with someone else.

Hmm.

Pause this video so you can think about your answer.

Well done if you said true.

Time for a task now.

Read each scenario and explain if these people can get married or enter into a civil partnership in the UK.

The first scenario says, "We're both 25 and want to get married." The second scenario says, "I'm 16 and want to marry my 17-year-old partner." The third scenario says, "We're both over 18, in love, and we're the same gender." And the final scenario says, "I'm already married, but I want to marry someone else too." Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

For the first scenario, you could have said: these people can get married because they're both adults, so it is legal in the UK.

For the second scenario, you could have said: these people can't get married, because in the UK they must both be at least 18 years old.

For the third scenario, you could have said: these people can get married or have a civil partnership because both options are open to all couples, regardless of gender.

And the final scenario, you could have said: this person can't get married because being married to more than one person at the same time is illegal In the UK, they would need to get divorced first.

Well done if your answers are similar to mine.

We're now going to move on to the third and the final part of our lesson, What happens if a couple struggle to get on? Some couples will stay together for a long time.

Sometimes a couple will struggle to get on.

This could be for many reasons, such as they have different ideas or feelings, or they have problems that they can't fix together.

Sometimes a couple might talk about their problems to try and resolve their issues and stay together.

They might also seek support from a trusted friend, family member, or a professional, such as a counsellor, to help them work through their problems. Time for a check for understanding.

How might a couple try to fix their problems? Is it A, talk about their problems to try and resolve their issues; B, seek support from a trusted friend, family member, or professional; or C, seek support from children to help fix their problems? Hmm.

How might a couple try to fix their problems? Pause this video so you can have some time to think about your answer.

Well done if you said A and B.

A couple talk about their problems to try and resolve their issues, or they might seek support from a trusted friend, family member, or professional, like a counsellor.

Despite trying to work through problems, some couples will decide to separate, divorce, or end their civil partnership.

It is important to know that it is never the child's fault if their parents or carers separate, divorce, or end their civil partnership.

When a couple separate, divorces, or ends their civil partnership, they might decide to live apart, not talk to each other for a while, or remain friends.

This can look different for different couples and not every couple will experience the same thing.

Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? The process of ending a marriage is called divorce.

Hmm.

Pause this video so you can think about your answer.

Well done if you said true.

Time for a task now.

Tell your partner three things a couple might do if they struggle to get on.

Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

Your answer could include: the couple might talk about their problems and try to resolve their issues as a couple; they might seek support from a trusted friend, family member, or professional; or they might decide to separate, divorce, or end their civil partnership.

Well done if your answers were similar to mine.

This brings us to the end of our lesson.

Thank you for joining me today.

Here is a summary of everything that we've covered in today's lesson.
