Hello, my name is Miss Willow, and I'm going to be your teacher for today's lesson.

Today's lesson is called "Recognising When to Report Harmful Online Content," and it fits into the unit, "Our Online Lives: How Do I Report and Find Support for Things I See Online?" During this lesson, we're going to be talking a little bit about discrimination, peer pressure, and bullying.

So for this lesson, we recommend that you have an adult with you for the duration of this lesson.

If at any point you do feel worried or uncomfortable, it's really important that you close the screen and that you go and speak to a trusted adult.

Okay, let's make a start.

By the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to describe how to identify harmful or inappropriate online content, and explain when it is necessary to report it to protect yourself and others.

Before we get started with today's lesson, we need to go over some ground rules.

These help to make sure that everyone feels safe and comfortable throughout today's lesson.

Laura says that, "We need to listen to others.

It's okay to disagree with each other, but we should listen properly before making assumptions or deciding how to respond.

When we disagree with someone else, it's important to challenge the statement that they've said, and not the person themselves." Andeep says that, "We should respect each other's privacy.

It's okay to discuss examples, but we shouldn't use any names or descriptions that could identify anyone including ourselves.

Instead, if we want to share a story or an experience, we can refer to someone as my friend.

This means that we're not giving away any identifying information, and we still get to share our story too." Izzy says that, "We can choose our level of participation.

It's important to remember that everyone has the right to choose not to answer a question or to join in with discussion.

We should never put anyone on the spot, as this can make someone feel uncomfortable." And finally, it's important to remember, as Jacob says that, "We shouldn't have any judgement.

We can explore our beliefs and any misunderstandings about a topic without fear of being judged." We are now going to have a look at the keywords for today's lesson.

These are gonna pop up quite a few times in today's lesson, so it's important that we know what each of these words mean.

First of all, we have inappropriate content.

This is online material that's offensive, harmful, or unsuitable for certain audiences.

Next, we have harmful content.

This is online material that may cause distress, fear, or encourage dangerous behaviour.

And finally, our last keyword is the word, report.

This means to inform a platform or trusted adult about harmful or inappropriate content.

As we go through today's lesson, keep an eye out for these keywords and when you spot them, see if you can remember what they mean.

Today's lesson is split into two learning cycles.

Our first learning cycle is called what types of online content are harmful? And our second learning cycle is called how do I know when to report something? Let's make a start on our first learning cycle.

What types of online content are harmful? Ms. Walsh says that, "We all spend time online watching videos, messaging friends, or using social media, but not everything that we see online is safe.

Sometimes we might see inappropriate content or harmful content." Jack asks a really good question, "What does harmful content and inappropriate content actually mean?" Maybe you are thinking this question too.

Ms. Walsh tells us that, "Harmful content and inappropriate content is anything online that might hurt someone either emotionally or physically.

It can include bullying, hate speech, or it might encourage dangerous behaviour." Examples of harmful content or inappropriate content, can include promoting violence or crime, racist or sexist comments, graphic violence, cyber bullying, this means bullying online, sexual or explicit material not suitable for your age.

And finally, fake news or dangerous misinformation.

All of these are examples of harmful content or inappropriate content.

Jack says, "Sometimes I see really upsetting videos, but they aren't taken down." Ms. Walsh says, "That's why it's so important that we all know what to do when we see harmful content or inappropriate content online.

If no one reports it, it might stay online and spread causing further harm." What can we do if we encounter harmful content or inappropriate content online? We can report the content or the sender to the online platform for violating guidelines.

We can tell a trusted adult.

This could be a parent carer, a teacher at school, or another adult that we know offline that we trust to keep us safe.

We could also block the sender if someone has sent us something harmful or inappropriate.

If we feel confident and we know the sender personally, maybe they're a friend or a family member, we can tell them that we don't like these types of content and that they shouldn't share them.

He could also tell a trusted adult about what he has seen." For your paragraph, explaining what action Jack should take and why, your answer might have included something like this.

"Jack should report the meme to the platform and speak to a trusted adult about what's happened.

Sharing violent content about real life tragedies is harmful and it can upset others.

By reporting it, Jack helps stop this kind of content from spreading, and shows that it's not acceptable to make jokes about serious events.

By the end of this learning cycle, you'll be able to answer the question, how do I know when to report something? Ms. Walsh says, "Sometimes it can be hard to know when to report something.

Not every mean comment needs reporting, but some things definitely do." Sophia says, "What if I'm not sure?" Maybe lots of you are thinking the same thing too.

Ms. Walsh says that, "If something online makes you or someone else feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or scared, trust your instincts and report it." You can ask yourself, is it making someone feel scared or unsafe? Does it encourage dangerous behaviour? Would you want a trusted adult to see you looking at this content? Would you want a young child to see this content, maybe someone in primary school? If the answer is yes to any of these, this suggests that it's time to report what you've seen.

Sophia asks a really good question, "What if an inappropriate comment or video online is meant as a joke?" Ms. Walsh says that, "Jokes can still be harmful, and this is really important to remember.

If someone is being hurt by it or it spreads hate or fear, it needs reporting.

This helps to keep everyone safe." If we don't report harmful content, it can keep hurting others.

Sophia says, "But isn't reporting, just another word for snitching?" Ms. Walsh says, "No, reporting is a form of helping others.

If someone was being bullied in school, we'd want to help them by being active bystanders.

It's the same online." Reporting can help to protect yourself from seeing harmful content or inappropriate content again.

It can protect others who might be targeted next or might come across the distressing content next.

It helps the platform remove dangerous or age inappropriate content, and it can create a safer, kinder online community, and this is really important for keeping everyone safe and happy online.

Remember, if you aren't sure how to report harmful content or comments online, you can always ask a trusted adult to help you.

Even if you do know how to report things online, you should still talk to your trusted adult about what you've seen as they can help you to process this.

Seeing inappropriate or harmful content online, can be really upsetting, so it's important to seek support.

Sophia says, "I saw a post spreading lies about a specific group of people.

I wasn't sure what to do." Ms. Walsh says, "That kind of post can cause real harm in the offline world as it's a form of discrimination.

People are posting mean messages about the way the person looks.

Faith feels uncomfortable, and she isn't sure what to do." Question number one, explain in one paragraph why it's important that Faith reports what she saw, even though it wasn't on her own device or account.

And number two, explain in one paragraph what Faith should do if she doesn't know how to report the comments to the social media platform.

This is your last practise task.

You're doing a fantastic job, so keep us up, and we'll go through the answers in a few minutes.
