Hi, I'm Ms. Lowe, and I'm your RSHE teacher for today.

Thank you so much for choosing to complete your learning with me.

Today's lesson is all about the joys of the online world.

So in today's lesson, we're thinking all about the things that we do online, the things that bring us joy.

And by the end of today's lesson, you're going to be able to describe your favourite things to do online.

Every RSHE lesson should begin with a set of ground rules.

This ensures that every conversation had in RSHE is respectful and we're all able to learn effectively.

So Laura is reminding us that in RSHE, we should listen to others.

It's okay to disagree with each other, but we should listen properly before making assumptions or deciding how to respond.

And when disagreeing, we challenge the statement and not the person.

Andeep is reminding us to respect privacy.

We can discuss examples, but we don't use names or descriptions that can identify anyone, including ourselves.

Izzy is reminding us to choose a level of participation that suits us.

Everyone has the right to choose not to answer a question or to join in a discussion, but we never put anyone on the spot.

And finally, Jacob is reminding us that in RSHE, there is no judgement.

We can explore beliefs and misunderstandings about a topic without the fear of being judged.

So let's have a look at our keywords for today's lesson.

First, we have opportunity, and this is the chance to try something new that could lead to good things.

And then we have positive, something good, exciting, or joyful.

And here is a look at what we're gonna be covering together in this lesson.

So we're gonna begin by asking the question, what are people's favourite things to do online? So online spaces can be fantastic.

They can be really fun, really exciting.

They can provide us with entertainment and opportunity.

There are so many different things that we can do online.

And the things that people enjoy doing online can be just as diverse as the hobbies and interests that they have offline as well.

So we have Aisha here who is saying that "online spaces allow us to share the hobbies and interests that we have in the real world with others," which is a really fantastic point.

The things that we like doing in real life, whether that is going for a run, whether that is creating art, making music, we are able to use online platforms and online spaces to share these hobbies and passions with other people.

So people might enjoy doing different things in the online world.

The way that people use the internet and the things that people find joy in online will be very, very different.

So Lucas here is saying that when he's online, he enjoys playing games with his friends.

Sofia says that she likes to watch films and TV.

Laura says that she uses online spaces to learn new skills.

And finally, Andeep says that he enjoys connecting with loved ones.

And that is just a really small sample of some of the things that people can do online.

Now, let's pause here and let's check our understanding about what we've just learned.

So true or false? Everyone enjoys online spaces in the same way.

I want you to pause the video here and have a think about your answer.

Really well done if you said false.

Now, let's have a think about why that's false.

Well, everyone likes different things, and people may enjoy doing different things online.

Like we said before, the hobbies and interests that people have online will be just as diverse as the hobbies and interests that they have in real life.

Some people really enjoy being creative online.

Sam is saying that she uses her computer software to create art and animations, and it allows her to make some really cool stuff.

Whereas Jun is saying that he uses apps and websites that allow him to make music, and he shares the things that he makes with his friends.

So the internet is a great space to try and be creative, to have a go at making new things or to share our creativity with others.

Now, online spaces are also full of opportunity, and some people really enjoy seeking out those opportunities online that are available to them.

People also enjoy embracing the opportunity to learn new online skills which can help them for future opportunities.

So David here is saying that in the future, he wants to be a coder.

"It's exciting to see all the different opportunities advertised on job websites, and I'm looking forward to starting to do an online coding course soon." Some people enjoy using online spaces to learn new things.

So Aisha here is saying that she enjoys watching video tutorials for new hobbies, like painting, crochet, and clay modelling.

It's so great that you can learn so much from others online.

Alex is saying that in the summer, very luckily, he is going to Italy with his family, and he's been using a language app to learn some words and phrases that he can use while he's there.

Now, let's pause here and let's check our understanding.

So, Sam says, "I've been using the internet to watch tutorials on some new animation software.

I really enjoy animated films and would love the opportunity to have a job in animation one day." Based on what Sam has said there, how has Sam used online spaces? You're gonna pause the video and have a think about your answer.

So, Sam has been using the internet to learn and explore opportunities similar to her hobbies and interests.

Now, some people like to use online spaces in order to find communities.

Megan here says that she is part of an online network run by young carers.

She was invited to join by her social worker.

It is great to connect with people who live in her community and have the same experiences as her.

Our favourite things to do online can be for entertainment.

They could be for fun.

They could be for learning or future opportunities and connections.

If we use the internet as part of a balanced life and we use it alongside things like face-to-face socialising, exercising, and managing our responsibilities, our lives can be full of joy.

Let's check our understanding again here.

So true or false? People only like to do things online that revolve around entertainment.

I want you to pause the video here.

Well done if you said false.

Let's have a think about why that's false.

Well, everyone's favourite things to do are different.

People's favourite things to do online might include entertainment.

They might include connecting with others, learning, or future opportunities.

Now we're gonna put what we've learned into practise.

So what I would like for you to do is to make a list of what some people's favourite things to do online might be.

And I would like you to include the following things in your answer: differences, hobbies and creativity, entertainment, connection, and opportunities.

So you're gonna pause the video here and write that list, and then we'll have a look at what you might have said in a moment.

Great work there.

So you were asked to make a list of what some people's favourite things to do online might be.

You might have said: People enjoy doing different things online.

Some people enjoy sharing their creativity with others or learning new hobbies.

Some people enjoy using the internet for entertainment and fun.

Some people enjoy connecting with others, whether that is through online communities or connecting with friends and family.

Some people use the internet for opportunities.

This could be for job opportunities or opportunities to learn new things.

Big well done if you mentioned any of those things in your lists.

Now what I would like for you to do is to write an example for each point on your list, and I've done one for you here as an example.

So you might have said that some people enjoy connecting with others, whether that's through online communities or connecting with friends and family.

And then you might have put as an example, "I'm part of an online youth reading group run by my local library." Now, you may not have a personal example for every single one of these, but try and think of an example that somebody might have for each point that you made in your list.

So let's have a look now at what you might have written down as examples.

So your first point in your list was about creativity or learning new hobbies.

And you might have said that somebody might learn how to juggle by following videos online.

Some people enjoy using the internet for entertainment and fun.

You might have said, "My favourite thing to do online is play video games." Your next point on the list was some people use the internet for opportunities.

This could be for job opportunities or the opportunity to learn new things.

And an example for this might be that you like to listen to historical podcasts online.

The next thing was people enjoy doing different things online.

You might have said as an example for this, "I like to research facts about my favourite animals online, but my brother likes to use the internet for online shopping." And we're moving on now to the second part of our lesson where we're asking the question, how can the internet be a positive place? So depending on how we use the internet, it can be a really positive and constructive thing in our lives.

Online spaces are chock-full of opportunities that can better our lives and the lives of other people.

One of the ways that the internet can be a positive place is through the fact that it gives us access to so much information.

The internet is like a giant library at our fingertips, and anything that we want to know about is easily accessible online.

And this can be really positive because it can help us to develop our knowledge of the world around us and to deepen our interests.

The next way that the internet can be a positive place is through connection.

So the internet allows us to connect with others, and this can be a really positive thing 'cause it can allow us to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones who may not live close to us.

It's also a positive way that we can connect with meaningful communities.

Like we saw before, Megan is part of a young carers community, so that is a really positive force in her life because she is able to connect with others who share similar experiences to her.

Now we're gonna pause and we're gonna check our understanding.

So what I want for you to do is to complete the sentence with the missing words.

Depending on blank, we use the internet, it can be a blank thing in our lives, for example, it can provide us with a way to connect with meaningful communities.

So you're gonna pause the video and tell me what those missing words are.

Really well done.

So, your sentence should look like this: Depending on how we use the internet, it can be a positive thing in our lives.

For example, it can provide us with a way to connect with meaningful communities.

Another way the internet can be really positive is through opportunities.

So the internet is full of opportunities.

That could be to learn new things.

It could be to find a job.

It could even be for further education.

And this is really positive because it allows people to find meaningful opportunities that they enjoy and really better their lives.

It can also enable people to find jobs and education opportunities regardless of location because they can work remotely.

Next is education.

So the internet, again, is full of learning opportunities that can help us to better ourselves.

Whether that is revision tools that we have online that we can use for exams, whether that's podcasts that we can listen to that can teach us about an area of the world that we're interested in, or whether it's a video tutorial telling us how we can learn a new hobby, the internet is full of opportunities to learn.

Like I said, it could be a hobby, a new skill, or even a language.

And it's really positive because it can enrich our lives and help us to develop confidence.

Next is raising awareness.

So the internet can allow people to raise awareness for causes that they are passionate about.

And this can be really positive because it can bring attention to important matters.

And it can also encourage other people to get involved too.

Next, we have self-expression.

The internet allows us to share our passions and our interests with others and gives us the ability to express ourselves.

As you can see here on the left, we have Aisha, and she has done a wonderful life drawing of some fruit, and she has taken a picture of it to share with others online.

And it's really positive because it can give space and a voice to our ideas and our creations.

Now, although the internet can be a really positive place, and we said before, it's positive depending on how we use it, and because of that, we can encounter worrying or frightening things online.

However, if we ever do witness or encounter something online that worries or upsets us, we can block and report the accounts and speak to a trusted adult who can help us to keep safe online.

Now, let's pause here and let's check our understanding.

Which of the following is not a positive of the internet? We've got people can connect with loved ones, people can avoid socialising with others in real life, and people can express their creativity with others.

So you're gonna pause the video here and tell me which one of them is not a positive of the internet.

Really well done if you said B.

If somebody is using the internet as a way to avoid socialising with others in real life, we would say this is not a balanced way to use the internet or it's not a positive way to use the internet.

Remember we said before that the internet can be a really positive force in our lives if we use it as part of a balanced lifestyle.

Next, let's do a true or false? So the internet only exists for fun.

You're gonna pause here and think about your answer.

Really well done if you said false, but why is that false? Well, although online spaces can be fun, exciting, or engaging, it also provides us with opportunities to learn, raise awareness, express ourselves, and connect with others.

Now we're gonna put what we've learned into practise.

So around this image, I would like for you to label five positives of the internet.

So pause the video and label your image now.

Great work.

Let's have a look at what you might have said.

So you were asked around the image to label five positives of the internet, and you might have written: It can help us to develop our knowledge of the world around us.

It can connect people with meaningful communities.

It can help people to find work or education opportunities regardless of their location.

It can enrich our lives and help us to develop confidence.

And it can raise awareness for important causes and encourage others to do the same.

Now, to end today's lesson, we're gonna have a look at a summary of what we've learned.

So the internet can be a really fun place and can provide us with lots of opportunities.

People enjoy the online world in different ways.

Some people enjoy learning online and developing themselves, while others enjoy connecting with others.

The internet has lots of different opportunities.

It can help people to find meaningful work and education, spread awareness for causes, or learn more about new hobbies and interests.

It is important to remember that if we see something worrying or upsetting online, we should always tell a trusted adult.

Now, if you ever have any concerns around your own online lives, there are some places that you can go to to access support.

First, we have Childline, which is a website and phone line which is able to offer confidential advice and support.

And then finally, CEOP, which helps protect children from online abuse and exploitation.

And I would like to end today's lesson by saying a big well done for all your fantastic work that you've done.

It's been a pleasure to teach you today, and I can't wait to see you in another RSHE lesson soon.
