Hi, I'm Ms. Kumar, and I'm really pleased that you've chosen to learn with me today.

Today's lesson is called Online Gambling, and it's taken from my unit Media Influence: How Can I Look After Myself? There might be some parts of today's lesson that you find upsetting or uncomfortable.

We strongly recommend that you do this lesson with a trusted adult.

If at any point you do find the lesson upsetting or uncomfortable, please pause the video and speak to a trusted adult.

The outcome for today's lesson is, "I can describe the rules around online gambling, explain why people gamble, and explain how to access support for an online gambling addiction." Before we begin any learning, let's just remind ourselves of those all important ground rules.

Laura reminds us that we must listen to others.

It is okay to disagree with each other, but we must make sure that we listen properly before we make any assumptions or before we decide how to respond.

And if and when we do disagree, please make sure that we do that respectfully by challenging the statement and not the person.

Andeep reminds us that it's important to respect each other's privacy.

It's okay to discuss examples, but please try not to use names, descriptions, or any other detail that could give away the identity of other people, or even yourself.

Izzy reminds us to choose our own level of participation.

Everyone has the right to choose whether or not they want to answer a question or join in a discussion.

We should never make anyone feel put on the spot.

And finally, Jacob explains that we should not judge one another.

We can explore beliefs and misunderstandings about a topic, but this should be a safe space to do that without any fear of being judged.

Throughout the lesson today, you'll notice that there are some words in bold black font.

These are keywords.

Let's take a quick look at today's keywords and their definitions.

Gamble.

in this context, yo gamble is to bet money with the hope of winning more.

Legal.

Legal is when something is within the law.

Illegal.

Illegal is when something is against the law.

Addiction.

Addiction is a loss of control over doing, taking, or using something, even when it is harmful.

And debt.

Debt is money owed to someone else.

Today's lesson is split into three parts.

Let's start with part one.

What are the rules around gambling? Before we look at the rules around gambling, we need to understand what gambling actually is.

Let's have a look at a few examples together.

Andeep and Izzy are playing a card game.

Andeep looks at his cards and he feels confident that he will win.

Andeep says to Izzy, "I bet you two pounds that I can win this game." Now, Izzy is also feeling quite confident in her cards, so she replies, "I'll take that bet.

My cards are pretty good too." By Andeep saying, "I bet you two pounds I can win this game," Andy has gambled.

He's gambled because he's bet money on the chance that he will win.

If Andeep wins the game, Izzy will have to give him two pounds.

On the other hand, if Andeep loses the game, he will have to give Izzy two pounds.

Gambling is when someone plays a game with the chance that they will win money.

Sam gives us another example.

"I bet that I can win this game of chess against my friend." This is another example of gambling.

Gambling is also when someone might place a bet by risking a sum of money on the outcome of an unpredictable event, such as a game, a race, or a competition.

For example, Jacob says, "I bet Oak Academy can win the school football league." Time for our first check for understanding.

True or false: placing a bet is always a risk.

Feel free to pause the video, have a little think, and then just press play when you're ready to move on.

How did you get on? The answer is true.

Well done if you got that correct.

There are lots of different ways in which someone might gamble.

People could gamble or place a bet in different ways, such as playing a game in a casino or online, buying a lottery ticket or a scratch card from a shop or online, placing a bet in a betting shop or online, or playing a slot machine in a bar, casino, or online.

A betting shop is a place where people can wager or bet money on sports or other event outcomes, like horse racing or football matches.

There are also virtual betting shops.

That's betting shops online.

You can only enter a betting shop if you are over the age of 18, and that includes online betting shops.

Betting shops will let people place a bet on almost anything, from the outcome of an election right through to the time of a baby being born.

Gambling might also take place inside a casino.

A casino is a place of entertainment where people can play games of chance, such as poker or roulette, in the hope that they will win money.

There are also casinos online or virtual casinos.

You can only enter a casino if you are over the age of 18 years, and that includes online casinos.

Casinos are often seen as places of fun and entertainment.

However, it's important to remember that the owners want to draw people in so that they will spend and bet their money, so they're deliberately designed to be that way.

Nowadays, some bars and restaurants might have slot machines that you can put money into to play games to try and win money back.

There are also slot machines found online.

You can only use betting machines, such as slot machines, in person or online if you are over the age of 18 years old.

These games will often have loud noises or bright lights to attract people to use them.

However, they're not the same as arcade games, which people pay just to play and have fun.

Lottery tickets and scratch cards are also a form of gambling.

They can be bought in most supermarkets, and can also be bought online.

You can only buy a lottery ticket or scratch card in person or online if you are over the age of 18 years.

These tickets or scratch cards are also a game of risk.

The numbers that crop up or the money that can be won are never guaranteed.

Not all games of risk are legally considered gambling.

Sam says, "I sometimes buy player packs when I play games online.

They give me a random set of rewards or items that I might use in the game.

It can be exciting because I don't know what I'm going to get, but they can also be really frustrating when I don't get what I want.

This is why buying player packs is risky." Loot boxes or player packs are virtual packs that can be bought as part of an online game.

They are deliberately made to look exciting so that they attract the attention of gamers.

They are a risk because a player does not know what they're going to get until they've paid and opened a pack.

In some countries, it's illegal for someone under the age of 18 years old to purchase them.

In the UK, it is legal, that means it's within the law, for under 18s to purchase these player packs, but they are considered deceptive or set out to trick people because they encourage young people to spend their money on a chance of winning.

Time for another check for understanding.

From what age is gambling legal from? Is it A, 16 years old, is it B, 18 years old or is it C, 21 years old? Feel free to pause the video, have a little think, and then press play when you're ready to move on.

How did you get on? The answer is B, 18 years old.

Well done if you got that correct.

That brings us to the first task for today's lesson, task A.

Which of these activities would be considered illegal, that means against the law, for someone under the age of 18 years in the UK? Use a tick if you think it is illegal and use a cross if you think that it's legal.

These are the statements, using slot machines online, playing a game like poker or roulette, online betting money when playing a game with friends in real life, betting money on who wins a football match, buying a scratch card or lottery ticket, buying player packs to access the next level in a game, playing a game like poker or roulette at a casino, playing an arcade game, or asking a parent or carer to buy you a loot box in a game.

Feel free to pause the video, carry out the task, and when you're ready to look at the answers together, just press play.

How did you get on? Let's take a look at the answers together now.

All of the statements with ticks next to them show you any of the activities that are illegal unless the person is 18 years or older.

Using slot machines online, playing a game like poker or roulette online, betting money on who wins a football match, buying a scratch card or lottery ticket, and playing a game like poker or roulette at a casino.

All of the statements with crosses, however, are not illegal and that can be done by anyone of any age.

Playing an arcade game, betting money when playing a game with friends in real life, buying player packs to access the next level in a game, and asking a parent or carer to buy you a loot box in a game.

Well done if you got those answers correct.

That brings us to the second part of today's lesson, why do people gamble online? The element of risk in all types of gambling can seem exciting for some people.

This is because when the chances of winning are really low or the odds seem to be against you winning, it can feel really good if you do.

Risk is the possibility of something bad happening, but this also means that there is a possibility of something good happening too.

However, losing can also feel really bad, especially if someone has lost money or an item as a result of a bet.

People might choose to gamble for a variety of reasons.

For some people, it's the excitement.

The chance of winning something is exciting.

For some people, it's the money.

Winning a significant amount of money could maybe change someone's financial situation.

Some people might see it as entertainment.

Maybe it's a way that they choose to socialise with friends.

People may also gamble because of peer influence or peer pressure.

If everyone around them is gambling, then maybe it seems like a normal activity to do.

Some people believe that gambling involves skill.

They believe that they might have the skill to control the outcome of a game if they're particularly good at it.

And for other people, perhaps it's escapism.

People might gamble to distract themselves from other everyday worries or concerns.

Time for another check for understanding.

Which of these are reasons that someone might gamble? Is it A, to win money, B, for excitement, or C, for entertainment? Feel free to pause the video, have a little think, and then just press play when you're ready to move on.

How did you get on? The answers are all of them, A, B, and C.

People might choose to gamble to win money, for excitement, or for entertainment purposes.

Well done if you got that correct.

All types of gambling that can be done in person can be done online too.

However, online gambling is seen as being particularly risky because sites are always available 24 hours a day, which means that people can play any time of the day or night.

Online games are also often played individually, that means alone, so some people are more likely to take risks because there's no one with them to advise them against it.

Players can also feel distanced from the money that they are betting because the money is virtual and accessed instantly.

Playing offline with real, physical money might highlight what's at risk more clearly.

Online gambling sites will try to persuade people to play for longer by offering credit, which is free turns or free money.

This can encourage people to play more as they'll often receive this at the point where they might be ready to leave the game.

Not all gambling sites are regulated, that means legitimate.

This can increase the risk of fraud or unfair gains, and it means that people are also more likely to lose.

Time for another check for understanding.

True or false: offering free credit online encourages people to gamble for longer.

Feel free to pause the video, have a little think, and then just press play when you're ready to move on.

How did you get on? The answer is true.

Well done if you got that correct.

That brings us to the second task for today's lesson, task B.

Give two or three reasons to explain how online sites encourage people to gamble online.

Feel free to pause the video, carry out this task, and when you're ready to look at the answers, just press play.

How did you get on on? Let's have a look at some possible answers together.

Your answers may have included the following.

Online gambling sites encourage people to gamble online by offering free credit or vouchers to persuade people to stay online and gamble for longer.

Online gambling sites use virtual money, which can distance people from the real amount of money that they're gambling with.

And online gambling sites are available any time of the day so people can play for longer periods of time.

Well done if your answers were along those lines.

That brings us to the third and final part of today's lesson, what are the risks of online gambling? There are many risks involved with gambling, whether it's online or in person.

One of the biggest risks, however, is that it can become an addiction.

The word addiction is made up of two parts.

The word addict comes from the Latin word addicere, which means bound to or to devote yourself to.

The suffix, the I-O-N, means action or a condition.

If you have an addiction, it means that you are no longer in control of what you are doing, taking, or using to the point where it could become harmful to you.

A gambling addiction, for example, playing online scratch cards, would mean that someone is unable to stop themselves from playing or from buying another scratch card, even if they've already lost lots of money.

Gambling can become a cycle.

It starts when a player places a bet.

If the player gets lucky and wins, they'll find winning exciting.

When they win, it will release dopamine, or a feel-good chemical inside the brain, and that rush of dopamine can become addictive.

If a player then goes on to lose, they might think that they'll definitely win next time.

In fact, online games often make people lose just enough so that each time they lose, they think they can win their money back if they try again, and so the cycle continues on and on.

Time for another check for understanding.

True or false: having an online gambling addiction means that you no longer have control over what you are doing, to the point where it could be harmful.

Feel free to pause the video, have a little think, and then just press play when you're ready to move on.

How did you get on? The answer is true.

Well done if you got that correct.

Players with gambling addictions can lose large amounts of money.

"The house always wins." This phrase is often used to describe the advantage that gambling or betting sites have over players.

It means that players will generally lose.

Gambling sites will give players small wins to keep them engaged, but winning consistently time after time is very unlikely.

Players might try to win back what they've lost, and the risk here is that it could result in further losses.

People can become addicted to the thrill of online gambling and they might find that they're unable to stop.

This can cause harm in many different areas of someone's life.

Financially, people might take on debt in order to fund their gambling habits.

They might risk property in bets.

They might borrow money or take on a loan in order to pay off any money that they owe in gambling debt.

Relationships can suffer.

They might find that they're spending less time with friends or family.

They might start to lie to people about their situation.

It could also cause conflict with family members.

Gambling can also impact health.

The person that's gambling might find that they're becoming anxious or depressed about the situation.

They might be losing sleep.

They could also have feelings of guilt or shame.

And socially, people might stop spending time with people in a social way or become antisocial.

People might find that they're missing school or work because of the constant need to be online.

It could also impact their concentration so that academic or work performance becomes poor.

If someone is worried about their online gambling habits, they can find support by speaking to a trusted adult, such as a parent, carer or teacher.

They could speak to an addiction support charity.

They could delete all gambling apps from their digital devices.

They could set limits on gambling apps so that the app closes and locks after a specific amount of time.

They could also request a self-exclusion from a site.

This is being banned from the site for a set period of time.

Time for another check for understanding.

Which of the following are potential consequences of an online gambling addiction? Is it A, taking on debt, B, lying to people, or C, becoming anxious or depressed? Feel free to pause the video, have a little think, and then just press play when you're ready to move on.

How did you get on? The answers are all of them, A, B, and C.

Taking on debt, lying to people, becoming anxious or depressed are all potential consequences of an online gambling addiction.

Well done if you got that correct.

That brings us to the third and final task of today's lesson, task C.

Read the following article and write one paragraph explaining the consequences of online gambling.

"Recent surveys have suggested that an increasing number of young people are gambling online.

Although there are many laws in place to prevent under 18s from gambling online, many are still able to gamble or trade in online games.

Many of the young people surveyed expressed concern about these actions, including being worried that they were starting to spend too much time thinking about online gambling and being less interested in spending time with friends or family.

Some of them also suggested that they have spent more money than they are comfortable with on items such as loot boxes, and that they have lied to family about where they have spent their money." Feel free to pause the video, carry out the task, and then press play when you're ready to look at some answers.

How did you get on? Let's take a look at a possible answer together.

Your one paragraph explaining the consequences of online gambling may have looked like this: "The article outlines a number of consequences of online gambling, for example, the risk that young people are spending too much time online gambling, and that, as a result, they are spending less time with friends and family.

The article also details that online gambling can have significant financial consequences, including young people spending more money on items such as loot boxes and then lying to their family about the amount of money spent.

Well done if your answers were along those lines.

That brings us to the end of today's lesson.

Before we finish, let's take a quick look at today's lesson summary.

Gambling is when someone plays a game with the chance that they can win money or places a bet on the outcome of something.

It's illegal for under 18s to gamble.

Someone can gamble or place a bet in different ways.

For example, in a betting shop or casino, by buying a scratch card or lottery ticket.

or by playing a slot machine.

All of these methods can also be done online.

Gambling can become an addiction.

It can impact someone's relationships, finances, social situations, and their physical and mental health.

There are many ways to support someone with an online gambling addiction, including setting self exclusions and time limits.

Seeking support from a medical professional or an addiction charity is also very important in tackling addiction.

This was a tricky and hard-hitting lesson.

However, you've worked incredibly well and I hope that you have taken away some helpful advice.

If anything in this lesson has upset or worried you, please make sure that you talk to a trusted adult.

Together with your trusted adult, you can find more support at the following websites: Childline, a website and phone line which is able to offer confidential advice and support; CEOP.

CEOP helps protect children from online abuse and exploitation; Internet Matters.

Internet Matters, teaches children and parents how to stay safe and happy online while using the internet.
