Hello, everybody.
It's Miss Panchal here.
I'm so excited that you've decided to join me on the next Science lesson.
So we are going to be learning all about different materials and how they can be recycled.
Now we've got lots of learning to do today.
So have you got your thinking cap on? I'm going to put mine on.
Have you put yours on? Well done, everybody.
Let's get started with the lesson today.
So the outcome for our lesson today is I can name and group different materials that can be recycled.
Now some of you might already know a little bit about recycling because you might do it at home or at school, but we're going to learn all about it today.
So we're going to practice saying some keywords that we're going to use in our lesson today.
So I'm going to say the word and I would like you to say it back to me.
My turn, object.
Your turn.
Super job, everybody.
My turn, material.
Your turn.
Wow.
Well done.
My turn, recycle.
Your turn.
Super job.
My turn, sort.
Your turn.
Fantastic job, everyone.
My turn, group.
Your turn.
Wow, everybody.
I'm so impressed with your practicing of keywords.
You've done such an amazing job.
Well done, everyone.
So we're first going to learn a little bit about materials for recycling and then we are going to have a go at sorting objects for recycling.
So let's get started with the first part of today's lesson.
So I would like you to look at these objects.
Do you know what they are? So put your thinking hats on for me and have a look really closely at these objects.
Do you know what they are? Have you seen them before? Maybe have you used one before? Can you tell me? Well done, everyone.
So you've got clown toys, bucket and spade, and a magnifying glass.
Hands up, who's used a bucket in spade before? Maybe in the sand or maybe you've even been lucky enough to go to the beach.
I know, I definitely have.
Well done, everyone.
Do you know what materials they are made from? So we've got clown toys, bucket and spade, and a magnifying glass.
Do you know what materials they are made from? Can you tell me? Wow, everybody, well done.
So these clown toys are made from wood.
This bucket and spade are made from plastic and the magnifying glass is made from glass, metal and wood.
So the magnifying glass is made up of three different materials.
Well done, everyone.
Let's do a check of our learning.
Different objects are made from different, A, plastic, B, materials, C, colors.
Have a little think with your talk partner.
Well done, everybody.
The answer is B, materials.
Well done, everyone.
So some materials can be recycled.
What does this mean? So pause the video here and I would like you to talk in small groups.
What does the word recycled mean? Have a think.
Super job, everyone.
Well done.
So recycling is when we collect and sort our rubbish instead of throwing it away.
These items then get changed into something new for us to use.
An object that are not recycled can end up in a landfill, which is where the rubbish is put into a large hole in the ground.
Now, not all objects and materials can be recycled.
For example, sometimes the lids of pots and other packaging that we have might not be able to be recycled.
For example, some drinking straws as well may not be able to be recycled, but companies now are trying really hard to make sure that all of the materials they use can be recycled so that we are helping our planet and these can be changed and into new things for us to use.
So not all of our rubbish can be recycled.
Some of it can, but not all of it.
So Jun says, "At home we recycle our plastic objects like bottles and pots by putting them into our recycling bin." And Laura says, "At school we recycle all of our scrap paper.
It can be made into new paper and be used again." Do you recycle anything at home or at school instead of throwing it away? Have a little think.
Do you do any recycling? Well done, everybody.
It's really important that everyone does as much recycling as possible to really help our planet.
Let's do a check of our learning.
Choose the correct sentence about recycling.
A, all materials can be recycled.
B, some materials can be recycled.
C, no materials can be recycled.
Have a think back to the learning we've just done.
Which one do you think is correct? Super job, everybody.
Well done.
The answer is B, some materials can be recycled.
So I said earlier that some materials can and some materials cannot.
Which material are these objects made from? Look really closely.
You've got bottles and jars.
Can you tell me what material they're made from? Well done, the answer is glass.
Do you know if glass can be recycled? Glass is a material that can be recycled.
It can be melted down and made into new glass bottles and jars.
So glass is definitely something that can be recycled.
Well done, everyone.
Which material are these objects made from? We've got lots of magazines and letters there.
So which material are these objects made from? Can you tell me? Well done, they are made from paper.
Now do you know if paper can be recycled? Hands up for yes, or hands up for no.
Well done, so paper is a material that can be recycled.
It can be recycled at paper mills where they remove any ink, staples, and glue.
And it can be made into many different objects including cards and cardboard.
So sometimes when you buy a birthday card may be on the back, it might say that it's been made from recycled paper.
So maybe next time you're in a shop have a look at a card or cardboard.
Does it say that it's come from recycled paper? Have a look.
So my next question to you is, which material are these objects made from? So we've got lots of bottles and yogurt pots here.
Which material are these objects made from? Can you tell me? Well done, everybody.
They're all made from plastic.
Now do you know if plastic can be recycled? Hands up for yes.
Hands up for no.
Excellent, so plastic is a material that can be recycled.
The plastic is cleaned and then either shredded or melted, and it can be shaped into new objects such as flower pots, bottles and plastic bags.
So just like how paper can be made into lots of new things, so can plastic.
Well done, everyone.
Now which material are these objects made from? Look really closely at the board.
Can you tell me? Well done, everybody.
The material is wood.
Do you know if wood can be recycled? Give me a thumbs up for yes, wood can be recycled? Or give me a thumbs down for no, wood cannot be recycled.
Well done, everyone.
So wood is a material that can be recycled.
It can be recycled at your local recycling center.
It is shredded into different sized pieces and can be used to make objects like new furniture or wood chipping.
So we can see on the screen there that it can be shredded, that means it's lots of small different sizes.
So some bits of small, some bits of big, and they can be used to make lots of different objects.
Well done, everyone.
Now let's move on to the next one.
Which material are these objects made from? Look really closely.
I'm sure you've seen some of these in your everyday.
Well done.
They are made from metal.
So we've got lots of metal cans here.
Now do you know if metal can be recycled? Tell your talk partner.
Super job, everyone.
Metal is a material that can be recycled.
It is cut and melted and can be made into objects such as bicycles and tins.
So these metal cans, it can be made into lots and different objects.
Well done, everyone.
So let's do a check of our learning.
Glass, paper, plastic, wood and metal can often be? So it is changed into something new for us to use.
So what's that missing word? Is it A, recycled.
B, taken to landfill.
C, littered.
Which do you think is fits into the missing gap? Well done, everyone.
The answer is A, recycled.
So glass, paper, plastic, wood and metal can often be recycled so it is changed into something new for us to use.
Well done, everybody.
You've shown me you have a really good understanding of recycling.
So let's move on to the first task.
So I would like you to sort these objects into groups of different materials ready for recycling.
So let's talk through the different objects.
We've got letters, a chair, a tin, a bag, a stick, a jar, a bottle, envelopes, a can, and a perfume bottle.
So let's recap on the different materials.
We've got paper, wood, metal, plastic and glass.
So I would like you to sort the into groups of different materials ready for recycling.
So maybe you want to ask an adult to print this page out for you.
You can cut out the different objects and then sort them.
Maybe you can work in small groups and work together to complete the task.
Have a go and we'll talk through the answers really soon.
Off you go.
Super job, everyone.
Well done.
You worked so hard on that task.
I know it was a little bit tricky to sort the objects, but you did such a great job.
So the task was to sort the objects into groups of different materials ready for recycling.
So in paper we should have had letters and envelopes, in wood we had chair and stick.
In the metal group we had tin and a can.
And in the plastic group we had a bottle and a bag.
And in the glass group we had a jar and perfume bottle.
Did you sort your objects into these groups? Well done for completing the task.
You all worked really, really hard.
So now let's move on to the second part of our lesson today.
And we are going to be sorting objects for recycling.
Are you ready? So Lucas is sorting through his rubbish to check what can be recycled.
He decides to group each object by the material it is made from.
So we've got a picture of some bins here and the bins are for glass, metal and plastic.
And Lucas says, "When we sort and group things, we use classification skills." So Lucas sorts them by putting all the glass objects into one group and all of the metal objects into another group.
Lucas says, "Which other materials could I recycle?" Can you tell me? Well done, everybody.
Let's do a check of our learning.
Lucas is sorting his plastic and his paper rubbish.
Which objects would go in the plastic box? A, bottle.
B, envelopes.
C, yogurt pots.
Have a little think with your talk partner.
Well done, everyone.
We can actually put the bottle and the yogurt pot both in the plastic box.
Now we can't put the envelopes in the plastic box 'cause the envelopes are made of paper.
Well done, everyone.
Andeep has joined his school's Green Team.
He is talking about recycling with his friends.
Sam says, "Recycling is important because you get to keep more things." And Alex says, "Recycling is important because it means you can throw more away." Do you agree with Sam and Alex? Why do you think it is important to recycle? Pause the video here and have a discussion in a small group.
Do you agree with Sam and Alex? Or do you think something a little bit different? And why do you think it's important that we recycle? Well done, everyone, for having a great go at that discussion.
So Andeep says, "It is important to recycle because it reduces waste and this helps the planet." When we throw things away in our rubbish bins, this gets collected and taken to a place called a tip or landfill.
Recycling means that objects can be made into something new for us to use again.
Let's do a quick check of our learning.
The children are talking about why recycling is important.
Aisha says, "Recycling is important because it makes more waste." Jacob says, "Recycling is important because we need less rubbish bins." And Sofia says, "Recycling is important because it makes less waste." Who do you agree with? Aisha, Jacob or Sofia? What do you think? Well done, everybody.
The answer is Sofia.
So recycling is important because it makes less waste.
Super job, everybody.
Well done.
So we're going to move on to the next task.
Sofia's older sister says she can't be bothered to recycle her rubbish.
What could you say to her to change her mind? So Sofia's sister said, "Recycling is just too difficult.
I haven't got time to sort my rubbish and put it into different bins." What could you say to change her mind? Maybe you can write down your ideas of what you could say to Sofia's sister or you can record yourself giving some advice to Sofia's sister.
Or you could actually talk to your talk partner.
Have a go at the task and we'll go through an example answer really soon.
Well done, everybody.
So you may have said, "Recycling materials like wood is important because it means that less trees will be cut down, which is good for the planet." And remember when we cut down trees that ruins our planet, but also it harms a lot of animals and destroys their habitats, animals but actually it destroys lots of plants as well.
You may have said, "You should recycle otherwise your rubbish will end up in landfill, which is really bad for the planet." Did you say something similar or did you say something different? Well done, everyone.
It's really important that we all try our best to recycle every single thing that we can because it's important that we help protect our planet and keep it as wonderful as it is.
Now, we've come towards the end of today's lesson now, so let's do a summary of our learning.
Different objects can be made from different materials.
And some materials such as glass, paper, plastic, wood, and metal can often be recycled and used again.
Objects can be sorted into different materials by observing and comparing.
And recycling is important because it reduces waste and this helps the planet.
Now I think everyone deserves a pat on the back for that all of that learning you've done today.
I'm so impressed with all of your suggestions and all of the work you have done today.
Some of the tasks were really tricky, but you gave it a fantastic go and I'm so impressed.
Have a great rest of the day and I'm sure I'll see you very soon in the next lesson.
Bye-bye, everybody.
