Key learning points

  1. Many French nouns end in -ation and -ion and have a verb in the same family. Add ation/ion to the stem of the verb.
  2. Around 33% of English words originate from French due to the Norman conquest.
  3. Many -ir verbs in the present follow the pattern of sortir: remove -(t)ir and add: -s, -s, -t, -ons, -ez, -ent.
  4. Many -ir verbs in the present follow the pattern of choisir: remove -ir and add -is, -is, -it, -issons, -issez, -issent.
  5. Some -ir verbs in the present follow the pattern of venir. The stem is vien(n) in all but the nous and vous forms.
