Key learning points

  1. The perfect tense is formed by combining part of 'avoir' or 'être' (the auxiliary verb) and a past participle.
  2. Verbs like 'prendre' and 'entendre' in the present also form their past participles in the same way: pris, entendu.
  3. Verbs like choisir, partir, venir in the present also form their past participles in the same way: choisi, parti, venu.
  4. Verbs like 'traduire' and 'écrire' form their past participles in the same way: traduit, écrit.
  5. Some common irregular verbs and their past participles are: avoir (eu), faire (fait), boire (bu).

Keywords

  • Perfect tense - a verb tense that describes completed actions in the past e.g. 'I said', 'she played'

  • Past participle - verb form that forms the perfect tense, together with the auxiliary verb

Common misconception

There are only three types of regular verbs and they form their past participles in the same way.

There are distinct groups of 'ir' and 're' verbs which form their past participles differently from the regular pattern (-i, -u). Students will find it beneficial to learn these verbs together as a group.
