Key learning points

  1. Regular practice of a range of phonic rules supports pronunciation skills.
  2. The Leitner System is a powerful tool for learning vocabulary effectively.
  3. Future intentions can be expressed using 'werden', modal, and other verbs like 'vorhaben' and 'planen' plus infinitive.
  4. Verbs like 'vorhaben', 'planen' and 'es ist' plus adjective need a comma and then 'zu' before the second verb.
  5. 'Werden' and modal verbs like 'wollen', 'können', 'dürfen' and 'müssen' do not need 'zu' before the second verb.

Keywords

  • Zu - preposition meaning 'to', used before the infinitive in most two-verb structures

Common misconception

'Zu', meaning 'to', is always needed as part of two-verb infinitive structures, e.g., 'Ich hoffe, mehr in die Schule zu lernen.'.

'Werden' and modal verbs do not need 'zu' before the second verb: 'Ich werde mehr in der Schule lernen'. Other verbs that do not require 'zu' include 'helfen', 'lassen' and 'mögen'.
